— Ace The media does love bashing on religions they don't like. Especially when they see an opportunity to alienate Christian voters from a social conservative's campaign.
hile Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.
Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.
Romney's great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she "used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow" over her own husband's multiple marriages.
Hmmm... maybe a reason to vote against Romney?
Well, perhaps. And yet the media doesn't seem as interested in another candidate's closer proximity to a polygamist ancestor.
We have discovered that his father was not just a deeply flawed individual but an abusive bigamist and an egomaniac, whose life was ruined not by racism or corruption but his own weaknesses.And, devastatingly, the testimony has come from Mr Obama's own relatives and family friends.
By the way, Obama's dad was already married when he married Obama's mom, then left them to marry a third woman, making him not a bigamist but a polygamist. (Or, at least, a trigamist.)
Well, you know-- the sins of the father shouldn't be visited upon the son and all that.
The sins of the great-grandfather, on the other hand -- well, the apple doesn't fall far from the generational-spanning tree, now does it?

I wonder if all the Mormon-bashing the MSM are doing re: Romney will ultimately fail.
Maybe either people'll hear about Mormons enough that they'll accept Mormonism as OK (either by research, or people they know, or just osmosis), or they'll be so sick of hearing about it that it won't mean anything anymore. (If the *worst* thing that's said about Romney is that he's a Mormon, well, that's not too bad, right?)
Kind of a reverse of gay-worshipping causing people to become more strident in their rejection. (I don't think most people object to homosexuality per se, just in-your-face flamboyance, face-shoving-in-ness, and accusations of bigotry.)
Also, Harry Reid's a Mormon. So there's (obviously) hypocracy goin' on.

I've been reading turtledove and now tearing through the online library of eric flint, before I go and inundate myself with long overdue fiction I've been ignoring for a while (thanks to politics.)
So if it's latin (original roman) it fits that it might have worked it's way into turtledove and flints work.
however, I thought that the depiction I recall (I swear I read something like that recently) was based on the heinleinian "grok" thing.
Basicaly saying, how great is the beast, when in the end it is the small creatures who feed off of them. Seems more budhist in nature of depiction.

So, my great grandpa married a child. Probably anyhow, I didn't bother to do any real research here, but I think I'd have to cop to the claim... somewhere in the past 250 years anyhow, there is likely a charge of what would be called pedophilia today. Almost certainly.

Both grandparent groups more than 5 children.
I'm one of more than 50 first cousins (might be more than 60, hard to keep track of all of them, my family is so large, I don't know how many FIRST COUSINS! I have)
I'm a bastard, in certain circles of my family I'm barely even considered.
Mayflower had nothing to do with my family, at least not the respectable part. in 1890 odd, my great aunt (my grandfathers sister) was born in a covered wagon as my mothers family was migrating EAST! My grandfather Was a drunken loser, a loving one, but he couldn't offer a damn thing to his wife or his children.
His family was the one that was moving east in the 1890's, he too was born in a covered wagon, because the small house in southern illinois wasn't built yet. (I assume covered waggon, he was born in a wagon, my great aunt goldie (that bitch wouldn't die) told me that there was no house to speak of until the 20's.
A small portion of my family is so bastardized that all we have is my great grandfathers last name to remind us. His name was "holloway" which indicates either a valley farmer (not likely) or a tavern/inn/hostel/hotel owner in a narrow pass of greater britain. And that great grandfather found his way west of the mississippi early enough to create my grandfather.
I don't know about geneology, but geography, and geographical migration dictates that ONE portion (the BAD poartion apparently) predates the civil war.
I don't know, but really, because I don't know?

I am a christian and would vote for mitt romney in a heart beat I have not a problem voting for mitt.
I would vote for a catholic mormon and Jew and any religion it would not bother me at all,if obama thinks this is going to sway the christian vote he is wrong. alot of us christians would vote for mitt.

From a purely biological perspective, polygamy makes perfect sense if you're trying to populate your social group--especially if you're of the strongest stock. That's what I keep telling my wife about bringing in a Russian bride.
