— Ace Just saw this at Hot Air and I figured I would copy it, minus Ed's atrocious film selections.
I'm going to try to avoid the obvious ones.. with the exception of two of my all-time favorites. I'd like to avoid them, but I can't. Have to give them their props.
The Thing. Is tension fear, per se? Not sure. One of the most well-made, tensest horror movies in history. As longtime readers may know, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Not just horror movies, any movie.
Murder on the Orient Express. Here's the thing: I like horror movies, but they almost never actually scare me. Murder mysteries, on the other hand, do give me a high creep factor at times. Maybe it's because they don't have the distancing effect of a supernatural premise: They're just about human beings, who can, and frequently do, kill other human beings.
There's something about this one in particular -- the creepy score, the hazy flashbacks, the awful circumstances of the murder-before-the-murder (that is, the long-ago murder of the Lindbergh baby, here called the "Armstrong baby," which is giving me shivers just as I type this).
Great movie, a cast so full of 70s era stars it's not funny (Sean Connery, Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, on and on and on and on...). And creepy.
Couple of other murder-movies with a high creep factor: the superior and underrated Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper film Murder by Decree (very effective creepy replay of the Ripper murders), and forgotten 70's gem The Last of Sheila.
Halloween III. Yes, Halloween III. I like Halloween, but it's very overrated, and there's no point mentioning it, is there? It's not like you don't know about it.
But Halloween III is a very interesting (if very flawed) little jaunt. Seems that John Carpenter intended to retire the Michael Myers boogeyman after Halloween II, and thought from that point on he would simply make a new Halloween movie every Halloween, but with a new story unconnected to the original.
Well, this was his first attempt, and it was so badly rejected by fans he gave up this interesting idea altogether.
But I think fans rejected it chiefly because it wasn't a Michael Myers slasher pic, which they had been expecting. Instead it's a hybrid detective-horror picture (with some light action overtones) about the fusion of black magic (druidic) and high technology.
The acting is kinda crappy, production values low, and the whole middle act is very overpadded (really, this is an hour's worth of story at best stretched to 100 minutes), but I still love this movie. I'm one of the thirty people on the planet who does. Give it a chance, maybe we can get the numbers up to 50.
And for all of those of you who are dieheard anti-Irish bigots, and wonder "Why don't they make movies about how creepy, conspiratorial, and demonically evil the Irish are?," well, buddy, do I have the movie for you.
Carrie. The treatment of Carrie by the mean girls is so awful it rises to the level of horror. Which makes that vengeance ending... um, satisfying, in a very wrong way.
Dawn of the Dead (remake). I swear by this movie, one of the best-written, best-acted, best-directed horror movies of all time. Honestly, it's not really the scariest movie; it's sort of a comedy-action movie which just happens to feature zombies. But it's outstanding.
Dementia 13. Francis Ford Coppolla's directing debut (I think), producing this nasty little flick for Roger Corman.
Is it good? Oh, it's reasonably good. But what makes this movie stand out is that it has one of the creepiest creep-music scores I've ever heard.
Oh, it's just the sort of typical deedle-deedle, deedle-deedle creepy harpsicord type stuff. But really well done. You can hear it at about the four minute mark here, as you watch the opening credits.
And Four More: Which were never actually made. The four fake-movie trailers from Grindhouse. Strong, Strong Hard-R Content Warning but very funny.
Seriously: Content Warning.
Oooohhh... Fright Night, yes! "You gotta have faith for that to work on me."
Not really scary, but pretty much the best vampire movie ever made. "The Rules" of vampires here should be industry standard.
Oh, a New One: I can't give this movie a big recommendation, but it's new, and it's free on Fear.net, which is a free horror channel that many cable stations have.
Midnight Meat Train, padding Clive Barker's very brief short story into a 100+ minute film.
What's good? The acting, the writing, the fairly impressive production values.
What's bad? The gore, which is always so ludicrously over-the-top the net effect is comedy rather than horror.
And it does, yes, wear out its welcome as it pads out this very short story into a full feature.
But I liked the characters and gay shit of this nature. Bradley Cooper (the asshole rival in Wedding Crashers) gets to play the hero, Leslie Bibb his girlfriend. (Some quality side-boobage here.) Vinnie Jones plays the Big Bad.
I don't really like the oh-so-cliched ending, which is the sort of ending short stories always have, but whatev's, I put it on late night expecting to fall asleep ten minutes in and stayed up till three o'clock to finish it. That says something, I guess.
Best Horror Trailer: Dead Career Sketch mentioned Phantasm.
The movie is... meh. At best. (What is up with that puppet bee? Did they just make that up on the day of shooting?)
But the trailer... This scared the shit out of me as a kid.

It sucks brutally. I thought so the first time I saw it, then forgot about it, then read you raving about it at some point and bought it for eight dollars, then watched it again and remembered how much it utterly sucked. Good first 10 minutes, good last 10 minutes, root canal for the 70 in between. Every last character is an unlikeable douchebag.

Have never watched the Exorcist. Devil movies scare the hell out of me. Slashers and serial killers and people who grab you in a deserted parking lot at night - IOW, realistic horror themes - eh. Don't get me at all. Possession and voodoo and weird omnipotent freaks who can do impossible things to people? Yep. I fra-reke out.

1 Fright Night!
That one was good, though almost a comedy. When I was 7 my mom took us to see Wes Craven's first feature: "Last House on the Left" at a drive-in. For some reason that one stuck with me for a long time. Seemed plausible, given that it was the early '70s, and what the two girls had to endure was pretty horrific. One of the first grindcore movies made. Of course Craven totally screwed up the ending with that idiotic kazoo/slapstick thing. Yes, I know why he did it, but it just didn't work.
Loved the tagline though: "Just keep telling yourself 'It's only a movie'" or something like that.

For some reason, The Grudge scared the bejebus out of me. Of course, I was pregnant at the time, so that may have had something to do with it. But the idea that Japanese poltergeists actually follow you around...at least western poltergeists lose interest when you cross running water.
Oh, and if you want to laugh your ass off, check out Kung Fu from Beyond the Grave. Kung fu, zombies, Dracula. What's not to love?

Carnival of Souls is extremely creepy, for an early 60s film. The original Saltair Pavilion is one scary building.

The original The Haunting is the best scary movie ever.
And pretty much any Obama campaign commercial.
Yeah. I like the old shit, but, sorry, silly gore puppets and threats of being vivisected just nauseate me, they don't scare me. Horror works best for me when it's about being overwhelmed, not butchered.

The Day After scared the shit out of me. I knew that if that film had any effect on voters that would lead to "nuclear freezes" or disarmament. Soviets would have been in Europe the next afternoon.
I got a copy of that recently and watched it...hadn't seen it since high school...it had a big impact at the time, but jebus, looking at it now...pretty damned manipulative of the TV people...can you say agenda? That was the beginning of the 'tail wagging the dog'...look where we are at now...bastards.

Im trying to think what the last horror flick I watched was the most scary.
Now I get freaked out by lots of guts and shit when watching the movie, but after wards your allways telling your self that its fake and that it was just too much gore. And thrillers like alien are all gravy too getting you to jump the hell out of your seat but I think for sure that my most terrifying movie that I have ever watched was candyman. Number one, im the fuck allergic to bees, number two it had that whole creepy talk to the mirror thing going on, and it happened to play around that critical age where you watch a movie and it totally drastically changes your world view sort of deal. I think thats what sealed deal: Im the fuck alaregic to bees, I was 9 or some shit, and it had creepy mirror talk. So offically still in my fragile mind Terrifuckifying.

And don't forget the original Nightmare on Elm Street, before Freddie sold out and franchise became a parody of itself.
Yeah, that was a good one. One thing that I liked about it was that the girl wasn't a helpless victim - she was smart and wokred out a plan to get rid of Freddie.
Oh and a bit of trivia - this was Johnny Depp's first film role.

That piece of shit scared you? It scarred me. See Allah's review of the Dawn of the Dead remake? That's not even half of how much I hated Event Horizon.
I always wanted to meet the guy who made that movie and asked him what the hell happened? Was it budget cuts? What did he want the movie to be because no one could have set out to make that piece of shit.

Dawn of the Dead (new one) scared the fuck outta me. I had trouble sleeping for a few nights. And I used to sleep with my bedroom door open to the rest of the apartment.. no longer... I don't wanna wake up to a zombie child ( or Obama voter) just waiting for me to awake before feedin on my tiny brain.
I also close the door from the bathroom to the bedroom cuz of IT. Never saw the movie but the book really fucked with my head while listening to the faucet drip in the bathroom while trying to fall asleep.
Event Horizon almost pegs the creepy-o-meter . Same with Prince of Darkness.

#2 System shock #2 OMG This game was brutal!!! Not only did they give you bat hearing but it was the creapiest game I had played in a long time.

Ooh, first a disclaimer...I am a scary movie chicken...BIG chicken. But, some kinds I like. Not slashers, but thrillers for sure. And absolutely no hookey-pookey-spookey devil movies - nope not me. My husband would have to go check for every single scary noice I imagined for months on end.
But, for thrillers -
We LOVE to watch Deep Blue Sea - the shark movie with LL Cool J, can watch it over and over. How about that parrot? It's got tension and laughs - best combo for me!
Event Horizon - yes, us too!
And I remember years and years ago we went and saw Manhunter - it was a Michael Mann film ( of Miami Vice and such) and had William Peterson in it (Grissom on CSI), I remember being scared on the ride home from Jacksonville that night!
Oh, and is the big alligator movie that is like a funny satire movie - is that Lake Placid? Add that one!

I would have to add "They Live". Not quite a horror movie, but it is cheesey and has a line from Roddy Piper that would make Bruce Campbell proud.
And the world's longest, pointless fight scene! Or he could have put on the goddamn sunglasses.

All of us Gen Xers--those devil child movies of the 60s and 70s (Rosemary's Baby, Exorcist, Don't Look Now, The Omen, The Shining (kind of)) depicted how alienated how parents were from us. Ergo, Nirvana.

church-going catholics, if they're currently supporting obama, are much more likely to switch to mccain
team obama knows this, so they'll be working this weekend to suppress this crucial vote:
Priests for Life is warning that James Salt and Chris Korzen from the pro-Obama organization Catholics United sent a blast email on Thursday offering instructions on how to prevent pro-life Catholics from distributing electoral guides near Catholic parishes around the country. source
doing literature drops at catholic churches on saturday evening (usually around 5pm) could be VERY EFFECTIVE for the amount of effort and expense required
ACE: I STRONGLY SUGGEST literature drops at catholic churches during every mass (hit the parking lots) and handing out literature after every mass
mass times are typically:

several times sunday morning

For me the scariest movie will always be The Changeling, with George C. Scott.
It's got great atmosphere. A terrific mystery. Inanimate objects coming to life. A terrifying seance. A ghost child's voice on tape. Grief. Betrayal. Revenge.
This movie freaks me out every time I see it. It's not gross or gory, but chilling.

I'm a big fan of the tales from the crypt movies, especially the second one with Dennis Miller.
I'm not a fan of the movies.

It's one of those movies where you have no idea where it's going, which adds to the creepiness. You have no idea what's going on. "
If you are talking about the one with Christian Bale I agree completely. Awesome movie that messes with your head. I read that in order to lose all that weight all he ate was like an apple a day with some water. Anyone that has seen this knows what I mean by him losing weight.

Ooops! I forgot to add (this a true story) Red Dawn. I was an 18/19 yr new mom and my husband and I went to see it. I guess bc we were young and impressionable - it really gave us both pause. Made us realize that freedom could be taken away, things we weren't naturally otherwise prone to think about at that time in our lives. We got copies for our sons a few yrs ago, bc we wanted them to have that same impression. It is a family fav.

It gets a lot of crap because it wasn't about Michael Myers, but (a) I have a lot of respect for the fact that the filmmakers were trying to be a little more ambitious with the franchise, hoping to turn it into something larger than Michael Myers, and (b) let's be honest, the Michael Myers films pretty much suck ass. Halloween is pretty good (and holds up okay), but pretty much all of the Michael Myers sequels are mediocre at best and downright awful at worst.
Nonetheless, even though I'll always defend Halloween III against unfair criticism, it's not very good. For one thing, it's plot makes zero sense.
Still, it's got some good creepy imagery (the woman with insects crawling out of her disfigured face) and the female lead, Stacey Nelkin, was cute and sexy. Hawt!

130 I put the trailer up for phatasm in the post... the trailer is the stuff of nightmares.
anyone who was a kid then had nightmares about that freaky acid-trip scary trailer.
The ending really messed me up. It appears to have all been a dream and the kid goes upstairs to pack up his things and...no, I've said too much.
I liked the little sci-fi twist to it as well.
"Aliens," while technically a sci-fi action feature, had some truly scary scenes...if you're claustrophobic that is. For that matter "Alien" also had a high creepiness factor to it.
Two more from the '70's:
"The Brood," which HBO seemed to play every 4 hours for a year (not terrifying but supremely creepy) and "It's Alive," wherein mom gives birth to "something" which immediately slaughters everyone in the delivery room (except mom). The rest of the movie is spent trying to hunt Junior down as he slaughters his way across a city.
I agree with a previous comment about "Demon Seed." Yep, it looks a little dated, as do all '70's dystopian movies, but it was still pretty good, and very original. Hopefully my Dell doesn't try and knock me up with its spawn anytime soon.

Exorcist III - highly underrated
Agree completely, 3 of the best "BOO!" Scenes in film.
Same with arachnophobia, but Arachnophobia only had 2 boo scenes.
But Excorcist the original is creepy through and through, especially if you were raised catholic.
"Rosemary's Baby."
Someone Mentioned "The alive" or "It's alive," there were sequals, I don't know which was the first, but the one where muppets that look like the guys from "goolies" are slaughtering everyone.
Actually, all the Alives were good.
SCARIEST movie I ever saw is "When a Stranger Calls," The original has 40 minutes of the most intense suspense there is, and the finale is almost as intense. I have stories about a bunch of young bad ass marines watching it.
Can't think of too many really scary movies off the top of my head.
and none of them had been releast in the last ten years.

I have to correct myself, "The Ring" was more than a bit creepy.
My brother just got his new house up and running, and I was doing some electrical and general construction work for him, and I was wondering where the hell my bro went.
My bro, is my BIG bro, he's older than me, and he's bigger than me physicaly.
I'm done with all the work I would do that day, so I go up to shower and change, and I see my brother in his "computer room" at the time, and he's staring at the screen, he doesn't even great me when I say "hi."
I go into the gest room, I get my clothes before I take a shower, and I say to my brother, who is staring at his computer monitor, "BRO!" so I get his attention.
"WHAT THE FUCK! Oh, Nevermind, ALL COOL! never mind, seen this? FUCK, no, cool, just cool!"
The power of "The ring," is that it's easy to fall into the world and to allow suspense to build.
Too much horror is halfassed gorified, and lame.
I suggest you all watch "When a Stranger Calls" THE ORIGINAL! without reading any reviews.
CREAPY CREEPY KREEPY!!!

I always watch one cheesy 70's horror movie on Halloween. Last year it was Evil Dead, the year before, The Fog... tonight... The Car. I hadn't realized how closely the car Bender changes into in the Futurama episode "The Honking" was based on this cheesy movie.
Also, both versions of Amityville Horror suck.

Scary comes in two varieties. Scary fun, like a rollercoaster ride, and scary scary, which is scary but not fun. Then there's just plain scary.
Scary: Alien, Dagon, The Haunting (original), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original), Night of the Living Dead (original), The Resurrected.
Scary fun: CHUD, Event Horizon, Resident Evil (the first), Return of the Living Dead (original), [others].
Scary Scary: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original), [others]
Scary stupid: Friday the 13th (any).

For me the scariest movie will always be The Changeling, with George C. Scott.
x10. Absolutely the best classic gothic ghost story movie ever made. Scared the bejesus out of me.
Others: Ghost Story, The Wolfman, Poltergeist, and a 70's-era movie I once saw on late night TV, the name of which escapes me, about a sorority house with a psycho killer hiding in the attic. He keeps calling the girls, but no one realizes that he's calling from inside the house. Totally creeped me out.
Posted by: TiredWench at October 31, 2008 10:59 PM (Kx1hM)
Clive Barker's "Candyman"
The poster alone -- a human eye up very close, with a bee hovering a wingspan away -- is enough to creep you out. No real "scares" here, that's not what it aims for -- but it's a very effective movie at being steadily unnerving. They aren't out so much to make you scream as to make you want to push away.
David Chronenberg's "The Dead Zone"
Again, not so much after making you wet your pants, as much to make you feel really really creeped out. Good performances all around from Walken, Adams, and Sheen, as well as a good supporting cast.
