Governor Strickand Defends Mere Suspension of Jones-Kelley as "Appropriate"
— Ace

She made a "mistake," you see.

Should Gov. Ted Strickland fire the state agency director who authorized an improper search of private records?

An inspector general report found Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Sservices Director Helen Jones-Kelley authorized an improper search of confidential records of Joe the Plumber -- the Ohio resident turned political celebrity. Strickland suspended the director without pay for four weeks, but Republicans are calling for her firing.

Jones-Kelley serves at the discretion of the governor, and according to state policy:

"using resources to violate or attempt to circumvent confidentiality procedures is strictly prohibited." Doing so "may be cause for termination."

Jones-Kelley said in a written statement through her attorney that her only intent in authorizing the information searches was to fulfill the agency's fiduciary responsibilities to Ohio's families.

But Friday, Strickland gave his reasoning for not firing Jones-Kelley, saying she made a mistake, and the punishment he settled on was appropriate.

"I felt one month without pay, which will deprive her of nearly $12,000, was a pretty severe sanction," Strickland said. "But I did not feel this good person who has served the public admirably for so many years should be tossed aside because she made a mistake."

Two other workers, who also made "mistakes" in digging up dirt on a political rival, were similarly given slaps on the wrist.

Deputy Director Doug Thompson got a four week unpaid suspension; Assistant Director Fred Williams a two week suspension.

Thanks to William A.

Heh, you actually think I watch the local news or read the Pain Squealer (except for the sports and sudoku)?  This will be a big nothing in Cuyahoga county, Toledo and Youngstown.  Hard to say how it will play elsewhere since I'm sure Clodumbus and other urban areas have quite a large Donk contingent, along with rats, cockroaches and STDs.  The southern part of the state is pretty conservative (Strickland is a strange anomoly) so it probably won't sit well with them, particularly if the state's shitty economy stays in the toilet.  I wouldn't be surprised if the twitch is tossed in a couple years since Ahia swings back and forth between Ds and Rs as each disgraces themselves.  Taft, the Repub before,.was pretty fucking bad but the donks kept nominating total shit and the stench of cocksucker Celeste and his carpet munching ex-wife lingered for a long time.

18 Joe told Megyn today that he was suing, but I think he said that state law limits him to $250,000 in damages.

Still would be a nice payday, and I don't see any way that he could lose with any halfway decent jury. Maybe he should sue each person/agency that snooped on him individually.

Helen Jones-Kelley didn't "make a mistake," as Gov. Ted Strickland insists. SHE WILLFULLY BROKE THE LAW ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. She (1) campaigned for Obama from her public office, and (2) used her public office to persecute politic enemies. SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED!

If Gov. Strickland doesn't understand the law, both he and his appointments need to be drummed out of political office.

Joe the Plumber for Governor!

22 Democrats are "good people" (tm). They make mistakes. Republicans are fascist thugs. They break the law with the intent to end freedom. Once you learn the basics, the news will not seem so baffling.

Two comments:

1.) First, I don't know if political considerations come into play here--if Strickland is trying to limit damage to the Democratic brand, or if he just doesn't like Joe the Plumber because he is a conservative, and God forbid a conservartive gather the scalp of a liberal governement employee--or if Strickland figures this is actually the appropriate Solomonic sanction that is needed from a Governor who would be vigilant about abuses of authority. Like I said, I don't know. What I do know is that it is obvious that Strickland is not personally outraged by this. Upset, or unhappy--sure, maybe. But not outraged. It would be interesting to see what he has got outraged about in the past, and who he has called for firing (if anybody). That could help resolve my above question.

2.) Regardless of Strickland's feeling on the issue, this mere cockleshell of a reprimand confirms me in my belief that this new world we live in of a "nation of men, not laws" has a curious operating paradigm: If it is a Republican in power, any potential abuse of authority, however tenuous the charge may be at first, will be investigated quickly, fully and completely, with full and strident denunciations given wide play, that anything that comes close to actually being an abuse of power will be dealt with to the fullest extent possible, with the harshest penalites called for, and with the timing done in such a way as to do the most political damage (Scooter Libby, Alberto Gonzalez).

If it is a Democrat, the issue will be investigated only upon delivery of firm proof, after first having every exculpatory explanation given and accepted. It will be dealt with with a minimum of fuss or exposure. When the guilt is positively established, all mitigating circumstances will be considered, and mercy quick to be given. Penalties will be light, and redemption quick.

It may take a while, but eventually conservatives will come to realize as I am starting to realize that with the press universally aligned against them, the educational establishment overtaken, and the governmental bureacracies staffed mainly with those who vote Democratic, that they are d***ed fools to trust in this current system for guarantees of their dignity or liberties, for to liberals the flow of justice only goes one way--theirs.

29 Some vandal had been skipping from one building to another at night, pressing his naked buttocks, groin or both on windows. Store owners, church workers and school janitors have had to wash lotion and petroleum jelly off the windows he selects. What's worse? Butt or groin? And I wouldn't clean the windows after he touched them. Yech.

The One and Jack Murtha both won elections in a state where they implicitly or explicitly called the voters of said state mouth-breathing racists.  The reality train left the station a long time ago for many in our nation.

The double standard democrat way has become so common an occurance as to render it's every new incident a non-event.

I have no idea when or if the nation as a whole is capable of pulling itself out of the abyss.

There are about 120 public employees in Ohio that makes $120k+ across the various state agencies. There are literally thousands who make 80-100k. That doesn't even count the lifers who get merit and step/COLA increases who have been there forever. There are secretaries in various state agencies that are making close to 90k.

It's absolute bullshit. The public employees union in Ohio needs to be broken and people fired.

I really hope the blogosphere is this pumped up about the issue in 2010 when Governor Ted Strickland and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner are up for re-election. The Ohio Republican Party is in bad shape and needs serious financial support.

I don't see any way that he could lose with any halfway decent jury.

Ohio + Halfway decent jury = DOES NOT COMPUTE

You only get somewhat sane and decent jurries in Ohio when the case doesn't matter to anyone in the state government, like the one I sat on with one guy sueing another for bills associated with whiplash.  If the judge, prosecutor, or mayor on up wants to make a point or knows anyone associated with the case, you get bumkis.

Ohio Dem Politics as usual.  Practically the entire Dem org in Cuyahoga (Cleveland area) County under "investigation" for corruption of one thing or another, JTP in Columbus and elsewhere (Toledo AND Cuyahoga County "looked") A disgraced attny general and his cohorts (the one thing that was done RIGHT-after much kicking and screaming) and who knows what other little secrets are floating out there, it's usually reported below the fold or on pg 2b.  There was a bigger uproar over "Coingate" during the Taft years.

I weep for my once proud Ohio

I'll feel better this afternoon when OSU STOMPS THE CRAP out of that team from "up north"  For all his faults our Gov.Strickland is MUCH beter than their Gov.Granholm. And we are in slightly better shape then they are.
