GOP Convention Speakers List- No Clues On VP
— DrewM

All the major players are already slotted so it's either a wild card or there's no correlation between having a scheduled speaking slot and being the VP. My guess is it's the latter.

The one person I think W3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUr">this list does eliminate is Rudy. He's now scheduled to be the Keynote Speaker on Tuesday.

Monday: Lieberman, Schwarzenegger, The Dark Lord and Master Cheney, Laura Bush and then the President.

Tuesday: Rudy, Huckabee, Ridge, Palin, and a bunch of others including Teh Fred.

Wednesday: Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, Romney, Cindy McCain, Bobby Jindal, and the VP nominee.

Thursday: Tim Pawlenty, Charlie Crist, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, and of course John McCain.

Does that leave anyone who has been floated as a possible VP choice?

Actually Rob Portman isn't on the list and as commenter "pistolero" points out neither is Eric Cantor. That might just be because it's a partial list and the Star Trib doesn't take a couple of Congressmen seriously or it might be something else.

The list is from the GOP convention website and it doesn't include either of those two, so who knows. Remember, the announcement is supposed to be made in Ohio, a week from Friday. Portman represented southern Ohio in Congress.

1 Please let the VP be Palin.

2 How the hell did Schwarzenegger get an invite.  That guys is as much a Republican as Obama is.  What the hell am I thinking, our own nominee is barely a Republican.

3 Ron Paul !

Thursday: Tim Pawlenty, Charlie Crist, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, and of course John McCain

Looks like Thursday is the best night to be violently ill and spend the evening crouching over the toilet.

7 I still think all this game playing is b.s.  Is any of it making anyone more enthusiastic?

>>Monday: Lieberman, Schwarzenegger, The Dark Lord and Master Cheney, Laura Bush and then the President.

Drew,

We do not utter the Dark Lord's name. He should always be alluded to as 'The Dark Lord that shall not be named'

9 It cant be Romney he speaks the same day as the VP nominee??? So that rules him it...I think.

10 Where is Karl Rove man....he isn't on that list!

I don't see Eric Cantor in that list.  Of course, I don't see Rush Limbaugh, either.  As if.

12 The Moron in me is pulling for Sarah Palin, but you haven't heard the name Duncan Hunter in a long time.

Palin would be a knock-out ticket combo supporting McCain providing him first rights as the Original Maverick POTUS with his brilliant complement of a leading woman VP. So long as she glorified the traditional VP role in Congress, I’d feel comfortable with her. Beyond that, she may not be the best should a tragedy place the VP into the Oval Office.

Of course, Fred’s my choice. He’d be the very best ever. He’d handle so many fronts magnificently; he has no failing weakness as our strong VP, AG, or Sec./State. He's the strongest Constitutional defender who is also McCain's friend, and I do hope that he agrees to do more than vet Justice nominees.

And Romney would stand his ground when confronted by adversaries, I would hope. McCain could have the politely distant relationship with Romney VP that Washington had with Adams if the personality lifestyle thing is really chafing. A POW survivor can endure the squeaky likes of Romney, though having survived torture already, may well choose to never subject himself to excessive discomfort. But it always helps to have the designated driver alongside for the most secure outcome: getting elected.

14 Powerline (Hinderocker) concludes that the schedule implies that Pawlenty will be VP, but I find that close to absurd--like they can't switch things around?  McCain stated he hasn't even picked the VP yet (as of this morning).

15 People not on the list: John Kasich (Ohio!!!) Bill Owens (former Colorado gov.) Mark Sanford (South Carolina gov.) Eric Cantor (Virginia congressman) Lindsey Graham (UGH!)

Posted by: Trubador at August 20, 2008 09:42 AM (MlrAE)

16 SEC Chairmand and ex-Rep. Chris Cox - touted, not on the speaker's list.

SARA PALIN!!!

It is both a base consolidating choice *and* a big play.

Get the feminine vote, steal the PUMA's from Obama's and show some steel going after corruption in politics.

Posted by: bcismar at August 20, 2008 09:55 AM (zhVlW)

18 Oh yeah, and I'm a Fred head too, but I don't think two old white guys is the right answer to battle the "Change for change sake and Hope it works out" senario of todays politics.

I think it could be Kasich.  He is going to be announcing his VP on the 29th in Ohio.  Kasich is a very good choice.  It looks like most of the front runners the MSM and everybody was talking about are not going to be the VP, they are mostlys peakers already. They could change things around a bit if it is one of them, but I doubt that.

I think McCain already knows who it is, even if he says he hasn't chosen yet, the list of speakers tells alot about who is not going to get it

I was hoping for Steele.  Also Fred of course, but I do not think that 2older men would be a good choice this election

Posted by: Stix at August 20, 2008 09:59 AM (BV+O5)

20 You can also add Rob Portman and Ken Blackwell (both from Ohio) to my list.

Posted by: Trubador at August 20, 2008 10:23 AM (MlrAE)

21 I'd never considered Blackwell, but what an excellent choice.

Posted by: pistolero at August 20, 2008 11:32 AM (QuCVu)

22 I would hate to lose Palin as our governor, but I agree with the comment that she would be good in the traditional role as VP...

23 Where is Karl Rove man....he isn't on that list!

No, he is. You just can't see him. He's that good.

Does that leave anyone who has been floated as a possible VP choice?

Yes.

Ron Paul.

29 You know who should pick Lieberman for Veep?

Obama, that's who.

Posted by: Bart: at August 20, 2008 01:15 PM (mr1eR)

30 Trent Lott!

Posted by: sandy burger at August 20, 2008 01:20 PM (VC56G)

31 I like your thinking, Bart.  Obama could pick Lieberman, and then McCain could counter him by picking Hillary.

As McCain said on SNL: That would be crazy.  Crazy exciting!

Posted by: sandy burger at August 20, 2008 01:23 PM (VC56G)

32 This guy:

btw, sandy, if that ever happened, I'll vote for Bob fucking Barr

Posted by: Bart: at August 20, 2008 01:25 PM (mr1eR)

33 Bear in mind, guys, that the schedule can be changed... It's not like they'd have to re-book the venue. And why Ahnuld, you ask? That's because he's a poli-celeb, and does draw donor $$$. Yeah, he's about as conservative as Liebermann, but he remains an (R) beachhead in CA, even if iit does sully conservatism.

Posted by: tmi3rd at August 20, 2008 01:30 PM (CwMWH)

34 The Fred Heads have to let it go.  I like Fred too, but "two old white guys with histories of cancer" is NOT a good ticket.

McCain needs to pick Sarah Palin.  She will thrill the base, esp. the pro-lifers - and she answers the drilling/oil seriousness quotient.  She also is a woman.  Duh.

Posted by: Thea at August 20, 2008 01:37 PM (N0hv7)

35 Meg Whitman?  WTF?  eBay's politics are plainly leftist.

Posted by: Purple Avenger at August 20, 2008 02:51 PM (6L459)

36 Again, Arnold for VP gives McCain a landslide.

Posted by: nikkolai at August 20, 2008 03:44 PM (bmxMJ)

37 Arnold can never be president. If McCain croaks, Peelosi is president.

In other words, your plan sucks. Arnold cannot be on the ticket. And Arnold sucks.

Posted by: Bart: at August 20, 2008 03:51 PM (mr1eR)

38 I've been wondering if McCain is making a feint to the Left on his VP pick to prompt Obama to pick a more extreme VP for his ticket, then, once Barry makes his announcement, McCain comes out with a slightly more-Right candidate.

Posted by: Stinky Esposito at August 20, 2008 03:56 PM (MMC8r)

39 nikkolai

Schwarzenegger is Constitutionally ineligible to be Vice-President...

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

And he sucks.

What does it mean that Lieberman is so promenent?

Don't knock Arnold.  The way he stuck up for Nixon cuts straight to the liberal's need for boogymen.

42 ''Where is Karl Rove man''............. in an undisclosed location, wearing a cloak of invisibility, sticking pins in little dolls? Too bad all the **Visible** GOP's are mad dog open borders amnesty shilling spineless senators i can't bear to look at so I'll be joining #6: ''Thursday: Tim Pawlenty, Charlie Crist, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, and of course John McCain Looks like Thursday is the best night to be violently ill and spend the evening crouching over the toilet.''

I'd love to go on Tuesday just to hear Fred speak.  I watched Red October last week just to hear Fred speak.  I'm gonna watch the Die Hard series this week to hear Fred speak.  I tossed my yard sign and car sticker but kept the buttons to remind me of what might have been.

The Fred Heads have to let it go.

No, I will not let it go.  Reagan proved age means nothing.  Voting for Obama cause he's black and Hillary cause she's a woman are as offensive as not pulling for anyone else cause they are old.

Fred forever!
