— Jack M. on Mars.
Mars is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, writes Jonathan Leake.
Who knew the Viking Landers were capable of so much pollution?
I'll tell you who: George W. Bush. You laugh, but when he was an oilman in the Texas deserts in the 1970's, he learned a thing or two about terraforming. After all, his plan always was to become the first President to drill on Mars, and he needs a favorable climate to do so.
(OK..I admit...I'm just trying to pre-empt the inevitable DU comments when this article gets out. If the lefties are gonna be loony, is it too much to ask that they put a little effort into it?)
Scientists from Nasa say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.
You don't say. In related news, I am announcing the formation of my new company, Ace of Spades Martian Carbon Offsets Trading, LLC. For the right price, I commit to you that neither Ace, LauraW, AndrewR, or I will ever set foot on Mars, thereby guaranteeing you the freedom to release all the carbon you like into the Martian Atmosphere.
What can I say? We care about Martian polar bears. And you should too.
The mechanism at work on Mars appears, however, to be different from that on Earth. One of the researchers, Lori Fenton, believes variations in radiation and temperature across the surface of the Red Planet are generating strong winds.
Hmmm...what could cause variations in radiation and temperature across an entire planet?
Could it be.....Satan?
Well, maybe. But I bet this is a more likely answer.
So step up and start your bidding today! Get your carbon offsets while they're...hot!

Besides, what could the sun possibly have to do with temperature? It's not like it's warmer where the sun shines more directly on the planet (i.e. the equator) and it's colder where it doesn't (i.e. the poles) or anything so obvious as that.

can you also come up with somekinda "martyr credit/offset" bond?
like... instead of committing suicide in a genocidal bomb attack, a martyr-wannabe could just buy a credit. something like this:
"if OBL and zawahiri don't have to commit suicide to go the heaven and get 72 raisins, then why should you! NOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO!
just buy a Martyr Credit!"
i'm sure GORE could work out all the details....

The average temperature on Mars has increased 1/2 degree C.
The average temperature on Earth has increased 1/2 degree C.
The power output of the Sun has increased 1/2 of 1 percent.
Hey, shit happens. Lynn and I were at the beach a few years ago, and Lynn says "Gosh, it's chilly. I wish the Sun was a bit warmer!" So impeach me, assholes.

OK, Ace has already got dibs on the Martian offset market.
How about the Martian tax and cap program. Yeah, libs are all about taxes. We could test a tax and cap program on Mars before trying it out here. I think David and Crowe would go for that. Make them interplanetary ambassabors of planetary warming or some such shit, put them in a shuttle with as many other loons as you could gather up, set the shuttle to auto pilot, then fire and forget, as they say. It would cut down on Gulfstream travel here!

Mike,
I see your point. Global climate change either way is bound to ruin somebody's day (of course it is also likely to make someone's day). However, the climate has been changing since before the beginning of recorded history. While that may suck on an individual scale, it is not going to be the end of the world. Furthermore, it is the point of this article that hyperventilating* about man made climate change is just that - hyperventilating. We can't do a damn thing about it one way or the other.
I think there is a very good case to be made that any climate change in our lifetime would be miniscule compared to the havoc that would be wrought if the marxists/environmentalist/neo-pagan dirt worshippers have their way. So why shouldn't we gloat when science rains on the marxist's parade?

Mike, there is considerable evidence that this is a cyclical thing that has occurred several times previously in the existence of our species. Our ability to mitigate the effects is immeasurably greater than any of the previous hot cycles. So I'm not especially worried.
Several centuries ago there was a period remembered as the Little Ice Age. James Burke noted in one of his documentaries that this period of very intense winters with the accompanying very short growing seasons for agriculture was also a period of great technological innovation among humans. Although there was considerable hardship, at the end of this period was when Europe began its ascent to dominating the globe thanks to the way Europeans were shaped by hardship. The descendents of those Europeans founded this nation. While much of Europe has decayed, the part that created the modern world is still alive here.
We can handle this and be the better for it.

OT, RANDOM THOUGHT, only cuz I think there are lawyers here.
while their MIGHT be a legal dictum defining the execution of a pardon as a co-equal action that makes the "crimininal" a willing participant in the pardon, and there-by (as matthews likes to reference) saying that anyone who accepts a pardon is acknowledging guilt.
Ummmmm, isn't the authority of "pardon" absolute? and in fact wasnt the establishment of pardon based on the authority of the Executive to acknowledge the overreach of the lesser (in this case) so that there ARE no Political prisoners?
"pardoning" does NOT require an acknowledgement of guilt (oh chris might use a court ruling as a reference, but the court has no authority over the fundamental executive right of pardon)
If you are pardoned, you are pardoned because the rules do NOT apply to you, at least at the time you perfored that act. I'm just saying.

Global warmists will reject any argument that the Sun is the cause of any warming for the simple reason that the Sun is beyond the jurisdiction of any law-making body. You can't tax the Sun, or sanction its activities, or issue it a subpoena to testify. A court can't grant an injunction against the Sun. See, if the global warmists admit the Sun has something to do with the temperature on Earth, the game is over.
And the game can never be over.

I don't know enough about the Sun to have a serious opinion, but if it is getting really f'n hot that could suck.
And that, sir, is precisely the attitude that allowed this global warming chicken-littlism to flourish.
I don't know dick about dick, but I know it's 7:30 and it's 68.8 degrees outside.
And I know at 5:30 it was 64.4 degrees.
That means in 2 hours the temperature has risen 4.4 degrees.
Now I have a computer model capable of extrapolation that shows that if the planet continues to warm at it's current rate, in 1 years time it will be 38,612 degrees farenheit.
Obviously that will boil the oceans and burn the atmosphere and is too hot to support life. The earth will be a gigantic ball of fire and molten metal and rock. In fact, we only have about a week to live. We are all soooooooo fucked.

Filty-rich liberals, be the property in a blue state or a red state.
Forcing YOU to make changes to "help reduce global warming" is a win-win-win-win-win for them. Their property is protected at taxpayer expense, they get to control the way your money is spent, preaching to you is ALWAYS fun, that feeling of superiority just can't be matched, and their lifestyle changes not. noe. whit.

I saw a show on the science channel the other day where they let the cat outta the bag. They showed that the little ice age coincided exactly with a prolonged period where there were almost no sunspots.
Now there are multitudes of sunspots (you can see an accumulation in a timelapse from 1970 to 2000).
So if no spots = cold, then lots of sunspots = ?
I bet that channel had 5 shows on manmade global hotness in the last week.

Dick Nixon - Actually, that portion of Revelation (among others) is disputed because numerous religious scholars debate whether that was meant to be literal or metaphorical.
The debate still rages because there are parts in Revelation which are literal interpretations while others are meant as clues of what is to come.
Many believe that God will in fact scorch men with extreme heat to torment them (this is during the Tribulation, which is after the Rapture) and show them what Hell shall be like if they do not use this last chance to return to God.
However, some people think that the Sun (since it is regarded as a great power) represents the Anti-Christ and his oppression that he will bring upon the people that remain upon earth after the Rapture.
I actually believe that it can be taken in either way for right now. We haven't seen the Tribulation or the Rapture come to pass yet, so it's hard to REALLY say for sure what God meant when he showed that vision to John the Revelator. Regardless though, I really don't want to be here when all that comes to pass, so i'm just gonna make sure my rapture ticket is punched when the train comes rollin' through.
Even so, Many Preachers claim we are living in the end times already, so if the Sun scorching men is meant as literal, then why shouldn't a warming cycle of the coming End be seen as a sign? The Sun has been shown to be burning hotter lately, so who knows really.
Posted by: Nth at April 30, 2007 08:01 AM (fdeNn)
could end badly with nothing anyone can do about it and I don't really
care either way."
The issue is not about the sun getting hotter, so don't worry. The weather is controlled largely by clouds, which are caused by the background radiation of the universe coliding with water molecules in the atmosphere, and either shade the earth from the sun or they don't, depending on sun spot activity. Sun spots are electromagnetic phenomena that blow solar particles out into the solar system, which force the background radiation that causes clouds away from the earth, and we have fewer clouds and the earth gets hotter. When sun spots are on the decline, the background radiation causes more clouds, and we have cooling.
The so-called little ice age was a period known by astronomers to have had very little sun-spot activity. The medieval warm period, which incidentally was much hotter than the current global average temperature, was a time when there was high sun-spot activity. In the past century, sun spots were on the rise up into the 1940's, when the earth's temperature was rising, it decreases over the next 40 years, and the earth's temperature decreased on into the 1970's. At that point, sun-spots started to rise again, and we had warming over the last 25 or so years. However, that activity is once again slacking off, and many climatologists, including the guy who invented the method for measuring global average temperature, believe that the temperature peaked in about 98, and is either holding steady or about to decline again.
Warming and cooling has been going on for millennia wihtout man's intervention. Of all the greenhouse gases, CO2 is a minor one, in the single digits percentage-wise among all greenhouse gases, and especially compared to water vapor, the most important greenhouse gas, which makes up about 85% of the total. Of all the CO2 in the atmosphere, the bulk of it comes from completely natural sources that have always produced it, and man is responsible for a tiny percentage, again, in the single digits, of all CO2. Also, CO2 fluctuations in the atmosphere trail warming and cooling by about 800 years, not the other way around as the alarmists would have us believe. Al Gore had to smooth out all the little ups and downs in his giant graph showing the relationship between CO2 and temperature. However, in doing so, he erased the fact that significant ups and downs in the temperature had no correlation in CO2 levels, but they did have a very strong relationship with sun spots.
The temperature has been on the rise from 1975 to the late 90's. Nobody disputes that. Likewise, CO2 is on the rise. That too is irrefutable. What is very easy to refute however, is that CO2 is the cause of the temperature. It was a theory that has been disproved solidly, but unfortunately it supports the need of neo-Marxists, a ready-made fan-base that Al Gore has successfully tapped into, for a platform to use to gain influence over the worlds developed countries, to resist global capitalism, globalization, and development in third-world countries.

The way I see it, it'll happen when it happens, so it's pointless to really worry about it.
But people do anyway. The vast majority of the Christian sects throughout the past have held that their generation or the next one was the last. They just didn't have a set story about it until John came about. It's always gotten heavier around the decade switches, and particularly prevalent at the two centenial switches.
If you believe in God, then you can't influence it because it is the will of God. If you believe in science, we're past the point of no return anyway according to the 'consensus' (which is yet another consistently wrong thing throughout the past).
Look for more apocalypse stuff leading up to December 2012; because that's when the SUPERSECRETAWESOMEACURRATE Myan callender stops.

I think that is a bit of an overstatement. Certainly there have been a lot of false predictions, especially during the middle ages when extra-Biblical superstition was really rampant. However, saying the "vast majority" of sects over the last two millenia were into date-setting is a bit of a stretch, although a frequently used "fact" brought up to discredit Christians.
Incidentally, John wrote Revelation in the 90's AD - about 60 years after the death of Christ. I don't see how generations could pass between the founding of Christianity and the writing of Revelation (unless you think Revelation was a forgery from a few centuries after).
The end times are discussed in the old testament. John brought new details to the table, but Daniel, Isaiah, Deuteronomy, and several other books dealt with the end times half a millenia before John's birth. In fact, it is the OT prophesies that are frequently used - correctly in my opinion - to say that these are the last days. For instance, the OT prophesies predicted the creation of a third state of Israel. If you are really interested in prophesy, I'm sure I can find some books for you.
