— Ace Olbermann insists his staff communicate with him via a mailbox outside his office?
Huh. It's good to be the king of bottom-dwelling partisan newscasts.
Allah drops a theory regarding the 1/2 Hour Comedy Hour there. He suggests that conservatives would like the show more if it were either funnier or more savage in cutting up liberals.
Or, of course, both at the same time, though I imagine that's a tricky thing to manage.
So it's a balancing act -- good-natured ribbing vs. savage attacks with less humor value but a whole lot of red-meat catharsis. If that's the case (and it just might be), it's hard to "objectively" pan the show, as it's attempting to find the sweet spot for a broad audience, and any particular person's idea of the sweet spot may be very different from the average.
Maybe that's the case. Though stuff like "B.O." magazine is neither funny nor a cutting attack.

Steward/Colbert/Olbermann will lose their appeal very fast if the Dems win 08 and retain both houses. Raging against the Republican machine is popular because the Republican's have power (not the houses anymore, but the Executive is a pretty potent office).
Between my side retaining power, and being able to rant like crazy, I will take power any day.

Once again, "Show For Rightist Morons Triumphs Over Show For Leftist Morons" isn't quite the most glorious victory ever. I can't believe anyone watches any of that idiocy.

The problem with assuming that Olberdouche and the others will go away if the Dhems take the White House in '08 is that delusional libs have been saying the same thing about Rush Limbaugh since 1988. In Limbaugh's case, the poorly thought out prediction was that, if a Republican were President, Limbaugh would have to go away because he wouldn't have anything to talk about, and if a Dhem were President, Limbaugh would also have to go away because the country would have finally rejected conservatism.
Either way, Limbaugh would have to go away. Reality, of course, intervenes every time, much to the collective chargrin of the leftards.
If that's any indicator, I'm afraid we're going to be stuck with Olberdouche permanently now that he's found his incoherent niche.

hmmm....
You know what the 1/2 Hour Comedy Hour needs?
Mark Russell doing musical riffs on the events of the day.
But being beaten with a pool cue half way through each number.
Which might require the services of a Mark Russell lookalike.
But they probably work cheap.

Granted I would love to stub the toe of the man who's running that laugh track, but other than that the 1/2 hour news hour only suffers (not because it's not funny) being corny. Extremely corny.
But then again....so was Norbit.
As for Glenn Beck. I just wish he would have dug in harder against Olbermann. Keith just reeks of douche-baggyness and someone needs to trash him quickly. Hopefully when Olbermann retaliates against Beck, Glenn won't hesitate to snap back like a doberman.

They need shows like "Ask Dick Cheneys Cock"
Or "Ride Boltons Mustache" and have celebrities ride a mechanical bull that has been made to look like Boltons glorious mustache.
Shit like that with cutting commentary on liberal hypocrisy. It needs to be more blue collar in its approach, less cute.

The trouble is that comedy is inherently anarchic and destructive. Conservatism, at its heart, is orderly and constructive. We can't just tear down. We're earnest at heart, however rude and cynical we may wish to appear. We care about things -- our country, the truth, freedom, and other foolish ideas liberals mock.
Comics can't care about things. Caring makes you unfunny. Once you care, you become the butt of the joke rather than the joker.
We should take pride in our unfunniness. The Universe is not funny at all.

Red Eye is the best show on TV period. IF you haven't seen it, record it and watch if for no other reason than to stare at Rachel Marsden's legs (I have no doubt they position her where they do for that very reason.)
With that said, there is a slight difference between Rush Limbaugh and KO. Limbaugh had a long run to build his popularity before having to face a Republican-run government. He was long-established before that hurdle. KO is a relative newcomer in that sense. He is still building a following. That makes it more difficult. Additionally, while Limbaugh speaks his mind and can be rough at times, KO is a bomb-thrower. Roughness and sarcasm almost always work. Bomb-throwing only works when you have a target to throw the bomb at.

Trimegistus, have you been taking those emerald tablets again? Humor relies on the existence of standards, and the humiliation of those who fail to meet them.
Walk across the room = not funny.
Fail saving throw vs. banana peel, fall on face and/or keister = comedy gold.

Yeah, but Limbaugh has talent, so it's akin to a comparison between Lebron James and Jon Koncak.

I mean, unless we tell you.

North Korea, our traditional ally since last Tuesday, wants to scrap its nukes for oil. This peaceful gesture should hold until Kim Jong Il falls off the wagon.

I pretty much stopped listening to Beck because of things like this.
From the May 11 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Glenn Beck Program:
BECK: All right, stop the music. I've got to talk. Stu, give me a topic, some butch topic I can talk about for a second, will you?
BURGUIERE: Blowing up Iran.
BECK: Blowing up Iran. I say we nuke the bastards. In fact, it doesn't have to be Iran, it can be everywhere, anyplace that disagrees with me.

The red meat-as-humor has never flown.
Getting partisian is usually the death of funny. You may disagree with these choices, but once upon a time Margaret Cho, Al Franken, Rosie O'Donnell and even (gawd I hate to admit this) Dennis Miller were funny.
Posted by: Gordon at February 28, 2007 11:46 AM (cVq/F)
I think we've already established that you lack a sense of humor. What I'm trying to get at is what the hell do you know about conservatives and what they like? You read a book or something?
Posted by: Dave in Texas at February 28, 2007 11:49 AM (pzen5)
As for Beck, it seems like he HAD to respond to Mr. Sportsreader-turned-prophet, so he was holding back--being gentlemanly. The funniest part was the "news" flashes scrolling on the screen... "This just in! Keith Olberman loves Keith Olberman."

Limbaugh had a long run to build his popularity before having to face a Republican-run government. He was long-established before that hurdle.
Not so! Limbaugh started doing political talkradio during the Reagan years, and his national program began in August 1988, right before George H.W. Bush became president. Now apparently his ratings increased during the Clinton years, but he was an established hit almost immediately out of the gate, a good four years before the Dhems took the White House in 1992.

When somebody does a comedy show that leans to the right instead of a right-wing political show with some jokes it will be successful. It's something Colbert and Stuart have figured out on the other side.
There's only so much audience for a redmeat show.

Bravo Glenn. Glenn's radio show often gets on my nerves... the 9/11 recap that he did this past year was just plain depressing. He sometimes departs the land of the entertaining, and seems to occasionally lose focus. He is far more effective on television, in my opinion.
Guys and gals, I remain very excited about the Half-Hour News Hour. There were a bunch of things that made me laugh my ass off, and I look forward to Sunday night's installment.
Conservative humor has been ineffective to this point because nobody's really tried it. Eric is dead on- Rush is entertainment with a fair amount of news to it. Its parallel on the left is... Stewart! Stewart frankly apes Rush so damned often it's frightening.
Miller might be able to host it, but he's too Letterman-esque in his sarcasm and bitterness. Whoever is going to come along as the eventual counter-Stewart has to have a delivery that is not that of the cabal of pundits. There are points where Beck occasionally approaches it, but he's a long way from it. This next host/hostess will necessarily need to be outside the box, and clearly very patient in building the foundation.
I would just about be willing to guarantee you that some of the producer folks read or have friends who read this blog. (I've recently begun doing some producing with my station, and I damn sight guarantee you that other producers read here.) If you can make constructive comments about how to make it better, I think you'll be surprised at how attentive they are.

I got a great idea for a funny conservative show; Keith Olbermann getting ass-buggered by a wolverine once a week. Your tastes may vary, but I think it would be comedy gold.
