With the compute power available at the time it was a dicey proposition. Today, with even an ordinary PC's micro being several times faster than the fastest big iron PCU's of that era, not so much. Missile guidance doesn't need any slow disk I/O and isn't bogged down by ponderous GUI interfaces. Its pretty much a sense/compute/correct cycle horse race.

As for Obama being tested, then backing away and calling it a victory, I see him as an appeaser who will surrender and frame it as 'taking America in a new direction.' The direction could be communism, sharia law, who knows what he has in mind.
