Lefties will accept it now because Obama's given it a new name: the United Nations Intercontinental Counter-Missile Response Network, or U.N.I.C.O.R.N.
Hope and Change!

Conservatives veiw SDI as a means to protect our country.
Liberals see SDI as a barganing chip to be dealt away for meaningless promises from crazy dictators.

Shooting missiles out of the sky with other missiles? Sheeya, right! If I've learned anything from the newspapers, it's that this is just a pipe dream of an insane wanna-be dictator.
Wait... just now getting my updated hymnal... Huh, it seems we've always been at war with Eastasia. Who knew?
Posted by: Cautiously Pessimistic at February 27, 2009 03:39 PM (ltwze)
Of course it was bullshit back then, and obviously bullshit now since we actually have a working anti-missile system. But it's only useful if you have the political courage to use it.
Posted by: Mætenloch at February 27, 2009 03:39 PM (BZALp)
So, now that we have a nifty missile defense shield, you don't suppose anyone would see that as reason to unilaterally disarm?
Posted by: krakatoa at February 27, 2009 03:40 PM (n4Su9)
Because Liberals assume we can all get along and the only real aggressors are Republicans and conservative religious people. I give it one year before we are tested and the Obama administration backs off and calls it a victory.

With the compute power available at the time it was a dicey proposition. Today, with even an ordinary PC's micro being several times faster than the fastest big iron PCU's of that era, not so much. Missile guidance doesn't need any slow disk I/O and isn't bogged down by ponderous GUI interfaces. Its pretty much a sense/compute/correct cycle horse race.

Some quotes:
I've come to believe that the Obama crowd is naive to the point of stupidity. They are very intelligent, mind you. They have more academic degrees than the faculty of Harvard. But intelligent people are often deeply stuck in their fix-the-world fantasies, which makes them idiot savants. (There's a reason why that's a French term --- Moliere wrote a comedy about it four centuries ago.)
Conclusion: These folks are arrogant and ignorant. Intelligent, yes, articulate, yes, and utterly persuasive to millions of suckers, yes.
But reality has a harsh way with fools.
But what worries me very much is that Obama is "putting at risk the future well-being of the country," as Broder writes. That means you and me and all the things we care about. And Obama is much too arrogant to change his mind.

Posted by: HolgerDanske at February 27, 2009 04:08 PM (nw+cE)
Oh yeah! Pluck a Nork dud out off the sky and give away all that sweet sweet telemetry. I bet Teh One is dumb enough to do it.
Arrogant and hubristic enough to do it, that's for sure. How...W of him.

Exactly.

Liberals don't acknowledge the existence of evil, and think they can negotiate with it.
As for Obama being tested, then backing away and calling it a victory, I see him as an appeaser who will surrender and frame it as 'taking America in a new direction.' The direction could be communism, sharia law, who knows what he has in mind.

Granted the processors in the mid 80's probably weren't quite up to the task, but it should have been clear that within a few Moore cycles they would be. As I recall the critics at the time claimed that the computations required were so complex that they would always be out of reach which is just asinine. Hell, my current toothbrush has a microprocessor faster than what the Apollo capsules used.

Dollars that have 'could have gone to health care and education and the poor'.
They never could grasp the concept that an ABM is like a fire truck. Granted you don't need them that often, but when you do need one, you better have one because nothing else is going to work.

No shit. It's remarkably Keynesian of them, for once. I'd like to think I don't have to explain that, but you seem surprised by someone's change of tune when the facts merit a change.
Hmm. Not that they've been all that Keynesian, actually. And, yes, not that there's been much nuance in the tune the Norks have been playing, either.
OK. You win.

The only "fact" that's changed is The One's in office.
That's not "Keynesian," that's bullshit.

Is there anything President Lightworker Candyman can't do? He takes a bellicose and unproven technology and mixes it with love and makes it defensive and ready to kick ass.

You mean it's been product placement all this time? You're right. We are morons. Or Ace is one smart Ewok.
I prefer the beaten-by-smart-Ewok version. Makes me feel less Biden-ish.

is holding the, well, in terms you may yet understand:
THEGODDAMNEDCIRCLEOFULTIMATEFUCKINGPOWERINTHEFUCKINGWORLD
as of...Well, as of, what/when? When wasn't the Oval Office the focus of power in the entire freakin' world? I'm pretty sure most sane people would not actually want to go back to pre-Jefferson days regarding that - even our pansy fairweather allies in the heart of..in the heart of, oh! That stupid, screwed up shithole that - twice! - attempted suicide within a mere 100 years.
I'm not sure where you're getting off, friend. I do hope you realize the size of the step you're taking, though.
Or, at the very least, I hope you get the gist of my criticism you so idiotically tried to respond to.
Posted by: amp at February 27, 2009 08:43 PM (h37S5)
Here's a test: North Korea threatens to nuke LA. Your response is:
A) "Now, that's not very productive."
B) "Kim Jong Il, if you try to drop anything more dangerous that a fruit basket on California, I will personally come over there, march into your fucking chateau, and skullfuck you to death with your fucking high-heel shoes."
C) Send 4 of our 13 Carrier Battle Groups to visit the area.
D) B and C

I was responding, asshole, to the notion that The One knew what the fuck was up with the oval office, as did his acolytes, when they were pissing on missile defense before.
So THE. FACTS. HAVEN'T. CHANGED.
Dipshit.

It does not change. Obama's always been favor of this. Just like he's always been in favor of withdrawing "all" the troops from Iraq, much in the same way I've always been a Red Wings fan, and a Phillies fan, etc.
