Gallup: McCain Picks Up 2, Now Trails by Six
— Ace

49-43. The eight-point lead Obama opened over the weekend and held on Monday was, I hope, just a blip.

1 And now will follow seventy people saying the only poll that matters is in November or whatever. And they might also say that polling on Saturday and Sunday is useless because the only ones home are toking up the devil-weed and watching Beavis and Butthead. And they might be right. But I still watch polls like a monkey with several severe learning disabilities.

2 Panic and hysteria aside, I don't think Obama's lead is a reflection of "hard" support.  True, Obama has his disciples, but I think most people just happened to flip their coin and it landed on "O" this week.

Perhaps recriminations and hoarding gold, guns, and ammunition are not the best approaches right now.  Keep pounding the press, sending your paper the FFMM videos to the papers, news shows and friends who may actually care.

Give money, volunteer to phone people.  McCain had the lead before.  He can get it again.

5 And for the first time in almost a month, McCain is now down 2 in the Real Clear/Battleground poll, so Obama is now up in ALL National tracking polls.  The (somewhat) good news, I think, was the Battleground state polls released by Ras yesterday.  It showed Mcain UP 1 in Ohio, DOWN 1 in Colo, TIE in Fla, and DOWN 3 in Virg.  (PA looks like it may be out of reach.) That shows that while McCain has suffered a slight dip, he is well within striking distance.  He can easily make that up.  It all starts with Palin on Thursday.

Wishfull thinking ahead....

I'm seeing all kinds of press on the coming disaster that the vp debate will be on Thursday.  How Palin has failed miserably in a couple of mock debates, the campaign hierachy is worried, even quoted as saying "what are we going to do?"  Here is the wishful thinking.  Is the campaign sandbagging O/Biden?  Is it possible that Palin comes out guns blazing and destroys Biden and rides to the rescue again?  She can't be as bad as we have seen, can she?  It may be one of the last game changers available, we are slowly running out of time.

Posted by: Judd at September 30, 2008 09:13 AM (BXHeE)

7 Palin is going to kick ass Thursday night.  I have no doubt about it.

Posted by: SueM at September 30, 2008 09:21 AM (YgYdr)

8 McCain picks up two... gee, that's better.

I guess I'll only slit one wrist and wait till Thursday night.

Someone get through to the McCain camp that in the final two debates, he cannot afford to look at Obama's undefended jaw and not throw a haymaker.

Oh, fuck, who am I kidding.  He can't merely fly over the exhaust port in the Death Star in an X-Wing.

Use the Force, John.

10 And don't forget the Bradley effect.  The press needs polls showing O! with a lead of at least 6 points or he's toast.  Remember that, and watch polling that keeps the delta at 6% or higher.

Posted by: Ken at September 30, 2008 09:28 AM (3rbzb)

Judd--

This is Campaigning 101: if you are at all worried about your candidate's performance in an upcoming debate, leak stories about how poor they are at debating.  Lower expectations at all costs.  This is one place where the Republicans can use the media's bias against them for their own purposes: they are itching to run as many "Palin is stupid" stories as they can get.  If she then performs competently, you get to crow about how she exceeded the media's expectations.

But I must admit I am a little worried since this will be her first time on a stage like this with her opponent right there.  She needs to come through or we are that much closer to all of our children being taught to sing paens to our Great Leader.

Scott,

I understand the expectations game.  My point is that they actually are not worried at all, but excited.

16 Good point PaRep.  It says the samples were changed on 9/29 to just Race and Age.  Do you think that is just an experiment, or are they switching to that for good?

This may sound silly, but I think just to send a message to Washington, those of the conservative persuasion should just vote straight Republican.

And speaking as a concerned Christian, might I say that this entire financial mess wouldn't have happened if Biblical principles had been followed?  What churches do Barney Frank and Chris Dodd attend anyway?  Trinity?

Posted by: Publicserf at September 30, 2008 09:46 AM (5BQAp)

20 I suspect the fanaticism of many of Obama's followers will wind up being a turn off for Reagan Democrats and independents.  I imagine some democrats say they support him just to avoid conflict with their righteously devoted friends

McCain/Palin was winning before this financial crisis. We need to get it behind us, fast. That McCain is within striking distance during a crisis like this means that we have at least an even chance of winning. IMHO McCain/Palin should:

1) go on the offensive on Obama's/Dems ties to the financial crisis, specifically their failure to properly regulate. Do not let them get away with the story that Republican free marketeers screwed the little guy to favor their Wall Street friends, when the truth is the exact opposite and we have it on C-Span. Today's ad was a good beginning.

2) tie the previous point to the McCain/Palin maverick reform image, pronto. And repeat.

3) irrespective of her debate performance, put Palin out there to fire up the base and reach out to white women. She's a great, great asset. She could read the phone book for all I care. Put her in ads, put her on talk radio, let her be herself. Let Palin talk reform. Let her talk about her Alaskan successes. Let her make the contrast between between on the one hand Obama and the Dems helping to create the financial crisis, and on the other hand McCain's efforts to regulate this mess before it happened and her record of reform in Alaskan politics.

We can win this.

24 Heh. I in fact do/did love Beavis and Butthead, and to a greater extent, Ren & Stimpy. I was only joshing those who make the same three or four statements when anyone posts a poll. I id forget to mention the vaunted BRADLEY effect however. BRADLEY EFFECT! Cell-phone polling! Registered/Likely! Sample-sizes! AAAAGH!

about this coming nightmare of a bailout.

Obama just became more palatable if he is elected.

His trillion dollar entitlement ideas and massive tax increases just became a no-go.

26 3) irrespective of her debate performance, put Palin out there to fire up the base and reach out to white women.

Is this happening? We were all fired up after her convention speech but have not seen any building on that foundation since then (maybe it is happening locally at the stump?), the original enthusiasm seems to be fading.
Here's hoping that what we all envision regarding Sarah will soon materialize. I am loosing a little faith.

27 Sigh, polls. Why can't you guys just give them a rest? Just ignore them til November at least? Is it so hard, is this some kind of compulsion, an addiction?

Look, unless Obama is up by 10 points or more there's no reason for even concern - the bias, bradley, and obama girl effects all push him up by that much at least. Even assuming the polls are of any value whatsoever.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 30, 2008 10:18 AM (0+Ggj)

28 hmmm, it's almost as if McCain's down because of the recent economic insanity and that he probably would have stayed on top if he had very quickly established that he had proposed changes to the Fannie Mae and that Democrats like Obama had opposed them.  It's almost as if the Obama campaign had done the exact opposite thing that McCain did by portraying the current crisis as McCain's fault.

In fact, judging these developments, it seems that McCain and his party maybe should have spoken the fuck up.

Posted by: joeindc44 at September 30, 2008 10:29 AM (QxSug)

29 Look
Regarding Palin:
There is a news embargo on her on all material that could remotely be considered positive for her. Biden is under a similar embargo, only preventing any negative material from being released.  That is why Biden is never in the news...everything he says is wrong.  Palin may do ok in the debates as long as she remembers to call Biden on his bullshit.
Remember Obama and Biden are walking gaffe machines.

I wish I shared your optimism.  I like Palin, thought she was the best pick for McCain, and continue to think so.

But those who think she'll change, chameleon-like, are letting their hopes cloud their judgment.  I watched the Gibson, Hannity and Couric interviews.  She had a few good moments.  Mostly, she was at times bad, at times absolutely horrible bordering on the embarassing.

Do you think she/the campaign did that deliberately?  Just to lower expectations?  Do you think that they thought it would be a good idea to give seriously bad, at times incoherent answers - just so that people would initially believe she is not up to the job only to "surprise" them later?  Were they hoping for the electorate to say after the debate, "Well, she's not as incompetent as I thought she was."  If Palin was so good at this, wouldn't it be wiser, and more beneficial, for he to display it at each interview/event, so that with each good performance the public would see that she really is that good and not a fluke?  Wouldn't the better public reaction be: "Wow, she really is good."

I am hoping for the best, but I do not expect a magical transformation of her abilities.

31 i am seeing mccain/palin signs going up all over the place here.....in yards and pastures that i know are democrats....
in the end...they won't vote for him. there aren't enough nuts to get him elected unless you count the biggest nut of all A.C.O.R.N....

32 #32....here in SC, I've been seeing a few more McCain/Palin bumperstickers here...where none were before.  I know McCain is taking a punch in the stomach for the economy meltdown, but my God...this should be his ace in the hole, for chrissakes!!  He needs to ditch this bipartisan crap and nail the Dems to the flipping wall and HARD.  The drive-bys aren't going to do it.  Apparently not many other politicians are going to do it.  I know he's a RINO at best, but if he truly wants to win this thing, he'd better get his act together and start cracking some Dem skulls over this.  To think they are using it against him is infuriating.  Lying bastards.

33 but I'm starting to hear things from my co-workers, friends, and such, that I wasn't hearing before..Palin jokes, Bush-caused-the-stock-market-crash, etc..not outright Obama worship, but enough Pub bashing to set off the alarms. 37 I'm pretty optimistic about McCain, but the Repubs are hampered by the fact that not one of them has during the credit crisis been willing to take a position and defend it beyond "we have to do something...anything," and "we really hate what we're doing but we'll do it to avoid the apocalypse."  The Dems postion which is false, is 'this is all the Repubs fault and we are forced to clean it up to avoid an Apocalypse the Repubs have created."  Why the Repiubs have decided to go fetal on this and at the same time call all those who support them and who are angry about the bail out misguided fools and worse, I don't know, but they have.  I understand the need for the bail out.  I don't understand the flaccid manner in which Repubs have treated the Dems on it and the over aggressie manner in whihc they have handled their own voters.  They're probably going to pay for hat.  How much it's going to cost them I don't know.  Maybe some one who knows can explain to me what the Repubs have been up to for the past twenty four hours so I'll understand it better..

Tilting at windmills, guys.

This bird is cooked.  Obama, short of some dead body, is not going to give up this lead.  I don't think Palin is going to make a difference, even if she does cream Biden, they have made her radioactive to the population.  My wife (straight down the middle, apolitical, working mom) was saying last night how Palin didn;t have the "pedigree" to be VP.  When asked what pedigree the O had, she moved to experience, when questioned on that, she moved to knowledge, when questioned on that, she moved to intelligence, and when questioned on that she responded with Harvard and he spoke well at the debate.  This is what it has come down to and I feel that my house is not unique.

I wish I could say better.

Perhaps looking down the pike, its better for the conservative cause not to be "in charge" when the real sh*tstorm comes through.  Midterms is were the focus should be.

Small silver lining, O thru 2012 does realy put a fork in Hillary.

Hoping I'm wrong.

This may sound silly, or even outlandish, but it seems to me that at first Obama was going to win big-time.  Then McCain picked Palin and he got a bounce.  Now the economy is having problems and Obama is ahead again.

For McCain to win this requires something besides McCain to influence the electorate.  Because McCain is as passive as a prisoner in a cell hoping to avoid another beating.

Either that, or I could try being better informed and keeping notes.  Or I could try volunteering for the proverbial worthy cause.  Naaaaah.
