Breaking at CNN now, no link.
Drudge has the statement:
I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle. So he's making an issue of the White House's Census power grab. Awesome. However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.
Obviously the President requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.
Also, since no one was formally appointed to his seat, he is still a senator from New Hampshire. Bonus.
Update - Top story at CNN? "Iraq's dogs poisoned, then gunned down." Way to stay on top of the game, guys.

Not just the Census, the Stimulus also. Finally, a politician that is behaving like an adult.
I would agree with him that the President deserves a team that is fully supportive of his initiatives, which is why no upstanding Republican should even consider serving under Obama.

Who the fuck wants to be Secretary of Commerce anyway? Especially when the only high profile part of the job, the Census, has been ripped out from under you anyway.
I'm wondering if the White House got spooked over the Constitutionality of the Census move and decided to push Gregg out and install a crony so they could leave it at Commerce?

Yahoo's headline only mentions the stimulus. That's how it will be spun, Republican obstruction of the stimulus, no mention of attempted politicizing the Census. Because you know politicizing parts of the government that are Presidential appointments is no longer a bad thing like it was when Bush was in office.

Gregg should never have teased about it, but thank God he didn't fully commit. I'm sure he looked over at Hillary and saw how she has essentially been disappeared and thought, "You know, I'm going to be made even less important than I am now. And the bonus? I'll get blamed for trade component of the economic collapse I have no authority to oversee. Do I really want to be the fig leaf for Obama and then run over by him and Rahm 'Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste' Emmanuel?"

At least in part, Obama nominated Gregg to make the Senate veto-proof. It's possible that Gregg's abstinence on the original Spendulus was part of the price.
The Republican leadership could not have convinced Gregg to return to vote on the reconciliation package unless his vote actually meant something. Doesn't that suggest that Specter, Collins, and Snow have returned to the fold?
The fact that Republicans were excluded from the reconciliation gives them cover. And the new bill is even farther from the Republican plan than before.
So a filibuster may be taking shape.

From Fox News; looks like a transscript.
Sen. Gregg stated, "I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.
As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President's proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.
Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Governor Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind."

He blew the whistle on Obama's Census Sneak before it could get entrenched. He's done it in a way where the media can't ignore his reasons, and must publicize the politicization of the Census. Except for resigning after the Census is already underway, what could he have really done as a cabinet member when the Pres wants it his way? This way they bust the gang before they're robbing the bank.

Nice to see a guy willing to step off the Titanic. Once Obama had made the power grab for the Census (and watch the truly strange census figures that will come out of the White House) the job of Secretary of Commerce --in V. P. John Nance Garner's words--wasn't worth a bucket of warm shit.
So good for you Senator Gregg--and a fairly classy turn down.
Now as for the Anointed One's power grab; let's just suppose that in 2000 or so, Karl Rove and Dubya had decided to move the Census Office and program into the White House. The douchebags in the MSM would still be howling like turpentined tomcats to this day. But when the Anointed One does it? Not a peep.

You know something is working when Dems point out how much it hurts Repubs and they shouldn't do it if they want a chance in 2010 or 2012. McCain had it right to point out Biden was the gift that kept giving and that's all that was said about the albatross around Dems neck.

Big deal. We thought we got rid of a RINO in the Senate only to have him come crawling back so he can cast his vote for amnesty that surely will be thrust upon us again
When they first announced the rumor about him going to Commerce I researched his record. While he is a squishy on abortion and eco-shit he is fairly conservative on everything else. He IS a fiscal conservative and that was the main reason that was sited for him turning it down. He had irreconcilable differences with the spendulous package.
He is nowhere near as liberal as the rest of the congressmen from that area and especially the terrible trio of traitors.

Barack Obama at the announcement of Gregg's nomination to Commerce (from Geraghty at NRO)
When the book is written about Judd Gregg, it will tell the story of a man with his own proud record of service on behalf of the American people. As a businessman, attorney, state executive councilor, congressman, governor in his own right, and now as a senator, he's seen from all angles what makes our economy work for communities, businesses, and families and what keeps it from working better. As former chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Judd has been involved in nearly every facet of public policy. And as Commerce Subcommittee chair on the Senate Appropriations Committee, he's already quite familiar with the department I've chosen him to lead.
Judd is famous or infamous, depending on your perspective on Capitol Hill for his strict fiscal discipline. It's not that he enjoys saying "no" although if it's directed at your bill you might feel that way it's that he shares my deep-seated commitment to guaranteeing that our children inherit a future they can afford.
Clearly, Judd and I don't agree on every issue most notably who should have won the election. (Laughter.) But we agree on the urgent need to get American businesses and families back on their feet. We see eye to eye on conducting the nation's business in a responsible, transparent, and accountable manner. And we know the only way to solve the great challenges of our time is to put aside stale ideology and petty partisanship, and embrace what works.
As one of the Republican Party's most respected voices and skillful negotiators, Judd is a master of reaching across the aisle to get things done.
Go ahead, Barry, try to throw him under the bus now.

Graham and McCain kinda hang around just inside the tent flap but never quite leave, and never quite give anyone enough excuse to boot them out.

>>Republicans Block Stimulus, Stock Market Turns Favor, Helping Only Rich White Men.
The Republicans, by their own hand, have been rendered impotent and ineffectual. They have become increasingly irrelevant in regard to setting a moral and honorable course for the nation. Falsely believing that they are dealing with estimable people of an opposite party they have failed to plumb the depths of the nastiness of the socialist heart. Despite the fact that Republicans have been able to observe the works and mark the words of the likes of Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Al Gore, Barney Frank, Joe Biden and those of George Cloony, Susan Sarandon, Leonardo Di Caprio, Michael Moore, and the other socialist lunatics of the entertainment industry and the congress they just never learn. They seem to be incapable of discerning the dark spirit of the socialist mind. If the actions of the aforementioned and of such groups as PETA, The Green Groups, and other socialist radical collectives have not educated them to the meanness, blackness and nastiness of the socialist psyche then there is no hope for them/us.

LOL at that one. I keep trying to remember what January 2001 was like. All I can really remember is a bunch of celebrities who had promised to move to France if George Bush won reneging, and the Clinton White House childishly stealing all the W keys off the keyboards.

I think.

I am having a great night. I am thrilled to Gregg back as my Senator. I am thrilled that he was very human, polite, Yankee, Republican, family oriented and respectful. He made a point several times sharing his process of independence, doing what he thinks is right and his style. He seemed to make a iron proof pitch to the people . Integrity makes you unable to serve Obama!
As luck would have it, he didn't follow the WH rules on when he was suppose to resign...he told them 2 days ago. They are saying they are surprised he told people today. When were the WH people wanting this to drop?
So much for transparency in BO's Badministration.

Were we all listening to the same Gregg speech? In the one I heard, he didn't sound so much like a Heroic Republican. There was a definite mention of "carrying the President's water" in the Senate. That had a considerable ick factor.
Carrying water is one thing, but in the Senate you have to grasp the hose it flows through. Lovingly. With a little fillip at the tip of the tongue.

Only species outside The Federation use "credits", and if you were gonna trade with one of those species, you just replicate some item they are willing to trade for and swap for some of their credits that you can use for other dealings.
100% profit. What Capitalist wouldn't groove on 100% profit??
Granted there are some "liberal" aspects to The Federation, but you wouldn't have to subscribe to them... Take your mini-reactor, replicator and transporter, haul your ass off to Bumfuck, Montana, build your log cabin, a la J.T.Kirk, and tell the rest of the world to piss off..

Analysis: Obscure post gives Obama big headache
WASHINGTON Quick, who headed the Commerce Department under President George W. Bush?
No disrespect to Carlos M. Gutierrez, but commerce secretary is not one of Washington's more glamorous jobs. It's overshadowed by first-tier Cabinet posts at Justice, State, Defense and Treasury. Scores of senators, House members, Supreme Court justices and White House aides would draw more attention at a Georgetown cocktail party or DuPont Circle restaurant.
Especially with Gregg, a down-the-line conservative Republican, Obama took a gamble by inviting a potential naysayer into his inner circle. If critics want to portray Obama as misguided or opportunistic, they won't get much help from Gregg.Obscure? Yes, I don't think anyone has ever heard of the Commerce Department. Gregg is a "down-the-line conservative"?

You know it was a good day when Andrew Sullivan is saying this:
It gets clearer. When Judd Gregg approached the Obama administration to see if he could be a part of it, he was assuming that his own party wasn't going to adopt a policy of total warfare against the newly elected president in a time of enormous economic peril. Between that moment and the current all-out ideological assault on Obama, his position became untenable. His recusal on the stimulus package provoked fury at home (check out the comments here) and dyspepsia among the GOP who are intent on responding to an open hand with a clenched fist.
I have to say even I am a little taken aback by the force of the Republican assault. Even in a downturn as swift and alarming as this one, even after an election that clearly favored one approach over another, even after the most conciliatory efforts by an incoming president in memory, these people have gone to war against the president. The president should stay cool. The rest of us should realize what motivates the GOP: the opportunism of selective ideology.

Sullivan has about five posts on how the GOP got to Gregg like Tony Soprano gets to witnesses. Earth to Andrew, if the GOP had that kind of pull they would go after Arlen Specter and the girls.
Why don't you accept the more obivous position that Gregg was really offended by this pork-u-lus and voted his conscience? You used to be a fiscal conservative Andrew, what the fuck happened?

I get ful of glee when an Obama cabinet choice has to step down for tax reasons. This one really cracked me up becuase he chose to step down.
I wish that Obama gets and manges to survive just 20% of the hate thrown at George W.Bush & Dick Cheney. Obama's giant ego would not be able to take the hate, instead of love and unicorns, etc.
I have always supported Bush/Cheney, it's too bad that Dick Cheney had no ambition to be president, he would have won! A real conservative with no fear of polls, would have been a win/win for the US.
Once Matthews, Olberman etc fall out of love with Obama, if it happens, Obama's ego will be broken. He's a one term president, I was too young to vote for Carter, and don't remember much but the gas lines my father had to sit through, wearing a sweater and he was a peanut farmer. This is not a surprise. Gregg is old school. A New Hampshire Republican who was a very good governor and understood that we are a bunch of cheap, self-reliant folks. He made the right decision.
New Hampshire has turned purple because of the migration of Mass-holes, who came over the border to enjoy the benefits of the "Live Cheap or Die" state (no sales tax and no state income tax) but then started whining about the lack of state services and elected the likes of Jean Shaheen the Tax Machine.
