First Excepts from Today's Gibson Interview of Palin; No "Gaffes" Noted, Except for the "Gaffe" of Being Pro-Military and Pro-Muscular Defense
— Ace

I'll quote some in a bit, just reading it now...

Palin defended a previous statement in which she reportedly characterized the war in Iraq as "task from God".

Gibson quoted her as saying: "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God."

But Palin said she was referencing a famous quote by Abraham Lincoln.

"I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that's a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God's side."

Incidentally, that's not spin, that's exactly what she said. The AP Dowdified her quote to take away the part about praying that we are on God's side to make it sound like she was simply saying "We're on God's side."

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God."

PALIN: You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln's words when he said -- first, he suggested never presume to know what God's will is, and I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words.

Not exact words, Gibson. She said (paraphrase) "Let us pray that our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." The AP cut off the beginning off that, and of course all the idiots in the MSM repeat it.

And then Gibson says, "Exact words."

Hot Air is on this of course. Here's AllahPundit on it, back when the AP began Dowdifying the quote:

" Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

Here’s what the AP turns it into:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a “task that is from God.”…

“Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God,” she said. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.”

Contact ABCNews immediately to demand a correction. This isn't an arguable mistake; it's a complete, provable mistake. And Gibson doubles down on "exact words."

Sorry, Gibson-- exact words means exact words. And if you're going to edit out key words and transform a statement from one meaning to another, that's not even close to "exact."

Greg Gutfied on Why They Hate Her: It's funny because it's true. [CJ]

Write Charlie Gibson: Ask him what "exact words" means, especially when the words are deliberately Dowdified in order to make Sarah Palin's explanation implausible.

With the censored words included, her explanation makes perfect sense-- in fact, it's pretty inarguable.

So ask them if "exact words" now means something else in the ABCNews stylebook.

He's trying to nail her on the "our leaders are sending them on a task that is from God" comment.

C'mon Charlie, the full quote was "Pray that our leaders are sending them on a task that is from God." Don't give me that "exact words" bullshit.

4 If that's representative of the interview, she did fine (shocking, I know). Unless they are holding out some gotcha questions, this should be good for another point or two in the polls.

5 She completely escaped the "Crusader trap" Gibson prepared for her. Amazing! (I would have certainly said something stupid if I had been asked the same thing.)

Obama's answer to that same question?

Obama: "Uh-uh-eh It is not something uh from my Muslim faith."

Gibson: "You mean, your Christian faith."

Posted by: oy at September 11, 2008 12:55 PM (KAuuY)

6 They should demand a retraction from Gibson on that one. Of course his real mistake was to rely on the AP reporting a quote accurately.

7 Look at the Neo-Con-Warmonger spin they are putting on this.

The banner headline at ABC New's site is: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY

Of course that appears to be predicated on this Q and A:

The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.

When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

So if a country becomes part of NATO and is then invaded we would be obligated to go to war? Wow this is breaking news stuff. I mean Article V of the NATO Treaty will only be 60 years old next year. Who knew this stuff?

Look at the hick Governor making shit up and getting us into a war!

8 Ace,

Um, sorry to have to break it to you and the Morons, but Barack Hussein Obama II is going to be the next POTUS.

No doubt.

Not even close.

William Jefferson Clinton today has called the race.

'Nuff said.

And no, I am not kidding.

The power of the MSM, Soros, the Left-Green-Pink-Blue-Brown and Islamist Axis is too strong to overcome.

Having said that, what is important now is to begin planning on what you are going to do come January 2009.

Higher taxes.

Less security.

Fairness Doctrine.

Just to name a few.

But to repeat, Barack Hussein Obama II is going to win the presidential election in November.

Word.

Just sayin'.

"Barack Obama today said:  'I suck cocks in hell.'  Film wish, at 11:00!"

Actual Quote from Mr. Obama:  "I really don't think, ahh, that, uhhh, you can really judge my campaign by, mmmmmm, how much money it sucks out of democratic donors.  I mean, y'know, ahhh, if, for instance, yrrrm, if you cock a pistol at the country, in the form of eight years of George Bush's, oooo, hellish policies, then, y'oh, ya, ummm, gotta get some money, n'stuff, from donors to help you, aaaaaaaaaahh, overturn that nightmare!"

16 The upside of this distortion and smear campaign is that it's going to win the election for McCain/Palin. After a couple of days the McCain camp should air commercials on each and every distortion by ABC. Average voters aren't as wonkish as we are, but they understand when Palin is treated unfairly, and many of them will vote accordingly.

42 I gotta say, I took the AP story at face value, and just assumed she was a little wacky, but I thought I could live with it.  (Reagan was a little wacky too)

However  (I guess I missed Allah's story) I was shocked when I just saw the real transcript.  That is nothing like the story, or the question as it was asked.

From a religious upbringing (and a religious upbringing in Alaska, none-the-less) I am very familiar with that type of prayer.  It's not claim of any kind, or an endorsement.  It was standard stuff  (every week) for the pastor to pray for wisdom and guidance for the leaders of the country.  It's an act of humility to a greater power, not an act of ego.

I am embarrassed that I ever bought the story, and I am appalled that ABC ran with it.

Perhaps, but these groups you just mentioned are also well aware that Clinton is not the candidate.  After seeing all of Obama's unforced errors that expose his true beliefs, as well as the continuing realization that he is such an empty suit that actual empty suits seem more qualified and intelligent, Clinton's supposed appeal to these groups ain't gonna mean much at all.

Combine that with the Clinton's desire to see Obama lose, paving the way for Hillary 2012! that no one, and I mean NO ONE, with even half a fucking brain believes that they are actually gonna campaign real hard at all.  In fact, I'm sure that Bill's racist gaffes and explosions of anger during his wife's run are gonna look normal compared to what we get if he goes stumping for Obama.

I'm happy that I don't have to tremble in fear of the Clintons' supposed voter magnetism as you seem to.  Anyone with a pulse is going to see any effort by Uh-bama to draft Bill & Hill into campaigning for him for what it is -- desperation.

Do you really think they are going to put any serious effort into campaigning for the man who slapped them in the face by not even vetting her for VP and hence has blocked them from returning to the White House?

I saw some tape of Hillary "stumping" for The One yesterday... she sounded downright robotic.  No passion, no energy, she just read the words like she was reading stock quotes.

Sorry, your fearmongering isn't having any effect.  I don't have blinders on about this election, but I do have faith.

My wife, a big Charlie fan from GMA days, was pretty pissed at him.  She's seen him do interviews of people he liked and thought that was the way he always was.  This was an eye-opener for her.  And I bet a lot of other women.

End result - Palin didn't do any harm to her image or the ticket.

96 I've seen MeTooThen around before. It's been a while back. But that doesn't make MTT's arguments any better.

Florida and Ohio will be very difficult to flip to Obama. McCain has polled over 50% in both of those states recently. And that means uncommitted voters must flip. That's a difficult task.

Colorado and New Mexico are possible. Colorado has a bunch of Californians who moved. And they're gumming up the works, for sure. Meanwhile NM is always close but McCain will have the advantage given the proximity of his home state.

That said, McCain can flip any number of states to offset Colorado's loss, if that happens. And I fully expect McCain to have a better than 50-50 shot as Obama continues to prove himself ineffectual in an actual political fight.

That said, the return key is really off putting. Seriously. You read like a jack ass when you type like that.

If WJC is committed to working for Obama don't come crying. It's great to be enthusiastic for Sarah Palin, but she's not running for president.

118 And your just fine math tells you that Clinton campaigning for Obama will deliver Indiana because, in the past, Clinton couldn't even win the state when he was actually heading the ticket? And this time, Indiana is different, how? (Must be that the blacks in Indianapolis didn't vote for Clinton back in '96, or else the flaming lefties who support Obama were in the tank for Perot back then....) And your just fine math tells you that _____ (fill in a number; you know, "do the math?") people will vote for Obama because Clinton tells them to, even though neither he nor Hillary is on the ticket? Anyway. There's really no math to do, yet. McCain's looking solid, but not safe, which is better than most of us thought he would be doing at this point. Obama's committing unforced error after unforced error, which is a good thing for our side. Bill Clinton's never had any coattails, so I'm not sure why he should be sprouting them now. Heck, when he took over in '92, he had a solid majority in both Houses of Congress, and most Governorships, and by the time he left, the Democrats were in the minority everywhere (well except for in Jim Jefford's brain.) So, I don't see where you find the magic. Just sayin'. Do the math. Whatever. But then, I'm a total dick, which should make somebody happy. Guess I'll go out and scout around a bit.

131 MeTooThen, do you really, seriously believe that the Clinton's are behind Obama?  If so, you are not looking at this realistically.  They have nothing to gain and everything to lose in terms of power and influence if Obama is elected.  Do you really believe the Clinton's suddenly became self-sacrificing for the good of their party or some ideology bigger than them?

Bill (William Jefferson, whatever), hates Obama--personally.  His associates have recently gone on record commenting how he is still seething over the race issue of the democratic primary.  And although Dick Morris' track record on political prognostication is pretty bad, I think he is in his element when he discusses the likely motives and trajectory that the Clinton's are going to take.  He called this one right after Hillary lost, and Bill and Hillary are doing exactly what he anticipated right up to the present.  Before the Clinton's can do damage, they have to be invited back into the house--at least in the minds of people like you.

Posted by: DCox at September 11, 2008 03:31 PM (2pT9a)

132 Without watching the interview yet, I withhold specific critique; however, consider the format of the interview and consider how she did.

The fact that she didn't blow it (from what I gather from the moron ensemble) is a testament to how well she did. No topic off limits. Qualitatively unlimited access for extended time from a "top" guy from the DNC MSM.

Contrast to Obama and others: Restricted access. Topics to be discussed known in advance. Very short intervals and certainly not enough for follow-up. For example O'Reilly had 30 minutes total with Obama, and Obama only agreed to do O'Reilly's interview so that he could blunt the post-RNC convention bounce and not because he wanted to face O'Reilly. His 300 advisors assuredly told him he had to do it.

All things considered, I don't have to watch Gibson's work at all to know already that Palin did great, that she could think on her feet and hold her own. At this point, McCain needs her more than she needs McCain, which explains why she has been touring side-by-side with McCain rather than by her lonesome.

Palinmania will continue whether Soros et al. flush more money down the toilet or not. Team McCain still has plenty of ammo it can continuously roll out that will impact ignorant voters.

Lovely.

I'm a Sarah Palin supporter, asshat.  But I thought it wouldn't do her cause, or ours,  any good to storm ABC's gate because of a supposedly bogus claim that Gibson didn't use an "exact quote" when it looks like he did.

If the video is bogus, all you have to do is prove it, because I'm sure it's the one that Gibson is going by.

>Don't be a dupe, Jack.  Read the post.

I did.  And then I made the effort to check it out for myself.  It appears that those *are* Sarah Palin's words, and *I* don't find very much to dislike about them.  Although I can see why some on the left might.

There's a lot of good reasons to hate the MSM,  and I'm no fan of Gibson, but he did his job here.  He used her exact words.  I don't think Ace would want to make a big deal out of this, if he knew those *were* her exact words, but I could be wrong about that.

146 Clamoring to ABC with a bogus claim doesn't seem very smart to me.

You go too far, Jack.  Its not a bogus claim as I just pointed out.  If Gibson was duped himself by an unfairly edited YouTube, it reflects equally poorly on him.  To base a gotcha question on something that he didn't have a complete video of is the height of bogusness.  It was just too good to check, I guess.

There are those who would say that Charlie Gibson is a spunk-gargling Obama-bot but I will refuse to make such a personal attack.

Posted by: toby928 at September 11, 2008 04:20 PM (evdj2)

147 Jack, you obviously didn't read the post.  Gibson cut off the bold stuff, which totally changes the meaning. "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

It's bogus to claim that Gibson misquoted her, or took her words out of context, etc.  He didn't.  And there are other copies of videos out there, of her entire speech before her church (they're out there and pretty easy to find), which suggest that those are her EXACT WORDS, so either they've *all* been edited, or she actually said them.

The burden of proof is yours.

Prove the video(s) have been edited and you have a story.

If you can't, you'll just make yourselves look foolish, and end up actually harming Palin, not helping her.

But it's your choice.

Jack, here's what she said:

"We should pray that our national leaders are sending them on a task from God."

Here's what they quoted (exact words according to Charlie Gibson):

"Our national leaders are sending them on a task from God."

That's a big difference. Chop those first few words off and a prayer becomes a declaration of fact. Much the same as "We should pray that the fight is over" is different from saying "The fight is over."

"I am happy to... go down... on a...  Negro." Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech" from the longer quote below:

*****************************

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.

************************

Eh, it's easy to fuck with speeches.

I was quite dismayed that you mis-characterized Gov. Palin's quote before her congregation. As you very clearly only provided part of her quote you either did this knowingly to have a 'gotcha' moment, or you used the AP quote without doing your own research. It was even more disappointing to see you stuck to that track even when she explained it to you. I think the likely answer is your research failed you. Because she's a social conservative and that's the worst possible person on earth. Add to that her popularity and charisma, and the fact that she very well may become president and the tooth gnashing is deafening.

Fiscal conservatives are annoying because they cut taxes and try to pare the government back but social conservatives appoint judges who won't do the bidding of the left, and that's all the power they have.

190 Good link to the Gut shooter. His intestinal fortrocity includes the following:

"To them, hating Sarah Palin is a symptom of larger bigotry against the rest of us, the normal. If they saw her at a party, they would wonder how she got in. She's the anti-Obama, the anti-New York Times, the anti-everything that Tim Robbins loves, which is why I love her — and you should too."

And it's true. They all hated Palin even before they knew there was a Palin to hate. Theyre sayin she's a smelly ol hog-ette in hose not cause of her stench is so bad but cause they hate her head to hocks. Theyre sayin she's filthy swine cause they aint had Sarah Shots. Theyve gone and registered probly 11 million or so illegals who don't even speak American and theyre feedin em all high protein Bridge to NowhereGate & TrooperGate & Ban BooksGate & Conflict-of-InterestGate & Expense-AccountGate & Screw-Due-ProcessGate & Forgot-to-Tell-Daughter-What-Boys-Like-To-DoGate & God knows what the shut the damn Gate all else - just so Spiffy Hans von Spavokodpiece & his voter fraud police have to put em all in jail before they get to steal this election.

Now this Gutty piece no mere spin. It's got that particularly rare clarity that even surpasses mere 'greatness' [Some liberal Dems might spell it "grateness", which also goes to the point.].

Folks, we're talking Babe Ruth pointing to right center in World Serious to punish the Chi Town Commies for not cutting his old buddy on their bench an equal share.

We're talking Butkus snorting flames to gain traction to get after YA Tittle.

We're talking Junior Johnson hisownself tellin' his pit crew to git off fightin' that minor fire under the hood he got a damn RACE to win!

There may be other ways: Vulcan mind meld, and DNA splicing are just a couple that come to mind.

Could be McCain gets to figurin with Missy Palin there aint nuthin worth wastin & git her to hook herself up twice a day to a sort of combination reverse dialysis machine & other bodily fluids retrieval system, call up ol T Boone to throw in for Precious Bodily Fluids Essence Purifier, suitably diluted to tamp down all that awesome raw power, then fill up 10,000 or so mini atomizers a day, start sending it out for distribution over the 30 days before the election and the duststorm in Obama's face will be so thick he'll quit or choke tryin.

201 My interview with Charlie Gibson:

"Charlie, you said in your interview with Gov. Palin that "our national leaders are God."  Do you still agree with that ?

CG:  "Ummm.... I'm not sure if that's exactly what I said."

Me:  "Exact words."

(actual quote:  "GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.""

Close enough by ABC standards.

202 You know Charlie didn't do the "research" himself, and just had some low-level producer Google a couple of things. Great job, mainstream media.

203 I gave the following comment to Charlie:

Let me say that I think it's idiotic that some people believe that Charles Gibson is on a mission from Satan.

But wait. I guess the "exact words" a top journalist would attribute to me are that "Charles Gibson is on a mission from Satan"? Did I get that right? Please advise.

Thanks, Don
