Fire Melts Steel: Google It!
— Ace

A fed study says yes, by gum, WTC 7 did collapse due to runaway fires and thermal expansion of key structural elements.

One surprise: Jet fuel apparently didn't contribute much to the collapse. At least not directly, in a fuel-splashes-over-to-WTC-7 sense.

You know what the Truther's theory is, right? They only imply this, but I believe what they're saying is that Flight 93 was actually supposed to hit WTC 7 -- but it crashed.*

So, alas, the government had a building wired with explosives but without a plane to hit it and "explain" the collapse... and, alas, either those bombs detonated due to fire, or the government decided to detonate the bombs to make sure they weren't found by firemen.

Or the guy who owned the property said "Pull it!" Or something.

I continue to be perplexed why Truthers believe the public wouldn't have been suitably angered by the mere fact off planes full of passengers smashing into the Twin Towers -- why they believe that it was really the collapse of the buildings (long after almost every victim of the disaster had already died, and almost (almost) every living soul in the buildings had been safely evacuated out) -- was really the crucial part of the Fake Pearl Harbor.

That, without the collapses, we would have all just said, "Eh, so Al Qaeda hit our buildings with planes with living hostages aboard and killed 3000 people in total. Big deal. The buildings are still standing, aren't they? Sure they'll have to be demolished due to being structurally compromised, but that will be our decision. Let's just chillax before making any hasty decisions or indulging in loose talk that might hurt Al Qaeda's feelings."

The fill-the-buildings-with-bombs theory only makes sense (in terms of government motivation) if it is postulated that the government believed that the hijackings, crashes, and mass-murders were not a strong enough drink to get us all drunkenly rambunctious for a Trans-Caspian Pipeline (or whatever); no, what we really all needed was the chaser of the collapsing towers. That, and only that, would get us hot for vengeance.

Because, otherwise? What fucking sense does it make to take the huge risk of filling buildings inhabited by tens of thousands of workers all day every day with enough explosives to put a battleship into low orbit?

Anyway. I'm sure this new finding from the US government, which by the way murdered 3000 people as a goof, will finally settle the issue.

* Actually, it didn't crash; it safely landed in Cleveland all passengers aboard were evacuated off, spirited to prison island, and then murdered, and then the plane was sent back into the air with a remote-control pilot and lots of already-dead corpses as "passengers," but then it somehow disappeared, and a crash that never actually happened was faked, or... something.

I don't know. They change their stories on this a lot, and their stories never make much sense in the first place.

2 But the joos would get more insurance money if the buildings were completely gone!

And WTC-7 was the headquarters of the CIA office that was running the whole operation, including the remote control piloting devices!

God, I need to stop watching Loose Change for laughs.

5 Gvien that everyone believes (correctly) that Osama bin Laden actually did put a bomb in the WTC in 1993, why would we put bombs in these buildings and then cover it up?  It would make more sense to be overt about the bombs and claim Osama's crew put them there.  We could have said it was coordinated with the planes or whatever.

Aside from the fact that the towers didn't fall down straight and part of one gouged WTC7, helping destryy that building without any explosives.

It's pretty fucking amazing that we never talk about 9/11.

7 They weren't art students, they were agents involved in planting bombs on NYC buses (which would, obviously, be blamed on the Muslims).

Only the incompetent Bush administration's thugs arrested them by mistake due a public outcry on 9/11.

31 I worked in 7WTC, it was a poorly built building. The building was actually constructed over the top of an old Con Ed substation and few of the supporting steel pillars aligned with supporting members of the sub-station. There was a great deal of  "inventive" engineering used  to cantilever the new 7 WTC over the old Con Ed building. The Port Authority was able to circumvent NYC building codes. The whole WTC complex was shoddy, the elevators would hit the side rails and make horrible noises. It shouldn't have been hit, but Osama lucked out, he hit one of the most poorly built building in NYC. Salomon Bros completed removed a floor at 7 WTC  to make a two story trading floor. Lucky it didn't fall down all by itself

Mark Loizeaux of Controlled Demolition Inc commented on the idea that the Towers were brought down by implosion (I think it was on the BBC some years ago, but I can't remember exactly).  Seeing as he and his company are the biggest and most successful implosion outfit in the world, he might know what he's talking about.  He had a series of slides showing the work required to prepare a building less than 1/3 the size of the WTC for implosion.  It requires months of prep work going on 12 to 16 hours day, and involved tearing out walls, torching through carefully selected beams, ripping out concrete supports using bulldozers, drilling holes in the concrete for the explosives, placing thousands of yards of precisely cut wiring and det cord, etc.  He didn't really have to say it, but after presenting the slides, he said (paraphrase) "Now, does anyone believe that this sort of work can be done in secret in a building full of thousands of people twenty-four hours a day?"

But of course he's just part of the plan.  He's been making all that extra effort for years to build a cover story.  Otherwise he'd just send in his bomb ninja stealth team and take down stuff like the Seattle Kingdome overnight.

Poor Troofers.

So I'm wondering ... In Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalypse novel The Road, the protagonist see fire-blackened skyscrapers in burnt-out cities leaning crazily, and ascribes this phenomenon to heat having partially melted the joins in the steel-girder frames. But if, say, three big-yield thermo-nuke bombs went off over a city, wouldn't the heat generated by the explosion cause all buildings to collapse, like the Twin Towers on 9-11?

First, the Truthers operate under the assumption that everything that happened was meant to happen; there are no coincidences to the paranoid.

Second, I wish the collapse of the buildings had come after everybody had died; the fact is that almost all of the firemen who died did so from the collapse.

It is true that the collapse of WTC-7 did not result in any deaths.

48 Please, Ace, in the name of baby Jesus tell me you didn't mean the title to this post seriously!

No, I really mean it.

Because the fires didn't freaking melt the freaking steel. The steel softened. Think ice cream instead of ice. Mmmkay?

Steel will soften at temperatures far lower than it will melt. The temp at which it looses 50% or more of its tensile strength is well within those measured or estimated for the Tower fires.

So -sad to say- Rosie "the lackwit" was, despite herself, correct in the lesser sense, although completely off base in the greater sense.

50 The fastest way to shut up a Truther is simply keep asking one central question: "What type of explosives, and what quantity, were used in this so-called implosion?"

They know they can't produce any evidence whatsoever on that one, or explain how they got it past a security team already geeked after one attack on that complex --- and explain how the plotters actually installed this bang-bang in office spaces running 24/7.

53 Ace, love your blog as always and thanks for the link on the Philip Berg story.  But the "Fire Melts Steel" bit, while an excellent gag on Rosie's idiotic claims, just gives the Truthers a chance to claim that NIST said that the fires were hot enough to melt steel (which they didn't, because the fires were not hot enough to melt steel).  The point is not that the steel melted, but that steel looses significant strength at temperatures well below the melting point.  It loses half its strength at 1000 degrees F and 90% at 1800 degrees, even though the melting point is over 2800 degrees.  Fire weakens steel, fine, fire melts steel, not so much.

54 However, Richard Gage, founder of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth

His group, which has swelled to over 400 architectural and engineering professionals, immediately responded to the Institute's claim in a press conference.

"Tons of [molten metal] was found 21 days after the attack," said Gage in an interview with a Vancouver, Canada television station. "Steel doesn't begin to melt until 2,700 degrees, which is much hotter than what these fires could have caused."

"There are holes in this story that you can drive a truck through," Gage added during the press conference. His group asserts that thermite, a steel cutting agent, was used to bring the building down.

Dr. Sunder disagreed.

"We conducted the study without bias, without interference from anyone," said Dr. Sunder. "We have only one single-minded goal in this effort."

While the Institute said it considered the possibility of a controlled demolition taking place at WTC 7, the notion was dismissed due to the absence of any recordings of an explosion sound.

Thermite, however, does not make an explosion sound. And while this was raised to Dr. Sunder in the media's Q&A session, he dismissed it as impossible.

"FEMA found it," said Gage. "Dr. Steven Jones found it, in the dust that landed in the entire area of lower Manhattan. And he finds it in the chunks of previously molten metal [from the towers]."

Specifically, in Appendix C of its World Trade Center Building Performance Study, FEMA claimed:
-- a federal scientific agency which promotes technical industrial standards -- marks the first 'official' government theory on the collapse. and a member of the American Institute of Architects, doesn't believe a word of the theory. Evidence of a severe high temperature corrosion attack on the steel, including oxidation and sulfidation with subsequent intergranular melting, was readily visible in the near-surface microstructure. A liquid eutectic mixture containing primarily iron, oxygen, and sulfur formed during this hot corrosion attack on the steel... The severe corrosion and subsequent erosion of Samples 1 and 2 are a very unusual event. No clear explanation for the source of the sulfur has been identified.Yet, no study of the mysterious sulfur or melted steel was included in the NIST report.
