— Ace Which is dumb, but that's not why I'm linking this.
It's for this homophobic attack on Andrew Sullivan:
Alterman complains that bloggers mix too much about their personal lives into their political opinions, as if they think the personal information bolsters the argument: "Tom Paine didn't say 'Common Sense' is a good idea because I'm such a hip guy." But of course, Tom Paine would have blogged, and he probably would have come across as a cool guy, and we would perceive that as bolstering his argument.Eric is especially perturbed by Andrew Sullivan's personal revelations, notably his description of curling up with his boyfriend in bed on Valentine's Day.
And Sullivan didn't even actually say that! The homophobe Alterman just took a brief post about "being in love" on Valentine's Day and read into it "curling up with his boyfriend in bed!"
I'd accuse Alterman of gay bashing, but I really think he's got too big an ego to allow such self-excortiation.
One thing I agree with: The personal stuff on blogs? I know a lot of people consider blogs to be partly a personal journal, but I've always had a major "ick" reaction to that. Not just Sullivan's beagles, boyfriend, and bronchitis stuff, but personal stuff from anyone.
Who cares?
I try to avoid that myself under the "who cares" principle.
I guess a lot of people do care, but it always seemed like oversharing to me.
Eric Alterman Is High-Pitch Eric?

I don't know if Eric Alterman is that high pitched, but he sure does sound effeminate and screechy when he talks.
Maybe he butches up for his occasional media appearances.
Thanks to Phinn for the pic.

I don't mind an occasional personal bit as long as it is done in moderation and not to get a specific reaction. If anything is it comforting to see a bit of human side. Not too much or we'll roll our eyes, but a little is ok.

Anyway, Yeah, I see two scenarios, the "council" is laughed out of existence immediately, or gains some foothold or prominence and becomes someones personal sledgehammer, whether to use against others, or as a partisan one.

There's a place for personal blogging, for sure. But to mix it in with politica or world opinion or whatever is like mixing coffee and tea. Ick!
There's lots of o-so-personal blogs out there, or LiveJournal, or whatever. I'm glad Ace keeps it seperated, except for the occasional hint about Value-Rite Vodka and Llamas.

Fuck, I already told you why I don't write about cool shit anymore-- The Man would kill me and bury me in a desert hole with extra lime.
So what do I write about? How much love sucks, with or without HPV. Oh, and how a human leg isn't supposed to bend this way.
Alien legs? Sure-- but that's only in Charlie Sheen's movies.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at February 27, 2007 09:24 PM (QTv8u)
No, effin shit. When I first found this blog, I thought it was the personal journal of a tweeked out serial killer. Think, Henry -- Portrait of. (great movie, by the way)
I was hooked.
And I thought -- Ick, very loudly. Ick factor is part of the AoS lifestyle. It has to be.
I know more about you and certain other slimy types that frequent this place than I know about half of my siblings.
The fact that I'm the only cool guy in the entire place has it's allure as well. My idea of working out is NOT sucking the guts out of a Twinkie. And, I have a compooter job so I kant be to dumb.
That's the neat thing about the blogosphere, I can be a really hot, cool guy and you guys can't even tell. (No, Bart. You can't IM me any more.)

The funny thing is that they busted their asses to give lefty's the credit for the strom thurmond thing (which was actually a conservative purge of themself) and then to turn conservatives into fanatics against dan rather ( a common commentor during the program) but pretty much every significant act other than "the power of the blogs" which focuses on KOS, all of the blogger references of successful actions are actually BLOGGERS for the "right."
FUCKING tards.

So, you're telling me posts about toenail clippings and earwax aren't going to draw the readers?
'Scuse me while I go edit some posts...
Having had a former blog that contained a lot of the personal goings on, I can tell you that it turned from fun to work once I actually got a couple of dozen readers. Keeping up to date on them and keeping them informed on me was exhausting. I finally just went dark and just recently decided to start over with a new nom de net without all the personal stuff.
And yes, I recognize the irony of this comment.

While there is a limit to how much personal stuff should be on a political blog, a certain amount is important. I mean, I don't really care if you bought a new pair of shoes yesterday. That has nothing to do with the War on Terror. However, certain personal things do matter.
For instance, suppose Andrew Sullivan never revealed that he was gay. All that you knew about him was that he was allegedly conservative. His arguments for gay marraige would carry a different weight in people's minds. It would appear that he was an outspoken conservative who really supported it which would be important. However, knowing that he is gay totally changes the impportance of his position. It becomes self-serving, if you will. He benefits personally from the legalization of gay marraige.
In a sense, this is the same argument as we see when we discuss media bias. We don't care if a segment of he media is biased one way or the other, just admit it. Tell us that your opinion is shaded by your beliefs and we will take that into consideration. Hiding biases only makes people suspicious.

There were some great lines in that movie though -- "you gotta change your M.O. I've burned em, chopped em, ground em up and stuck em in luggage." "They can't catch you if they think you're several people."

Hey guess what, when I read a political or issues blog I don't want to read about your trip to Ibzia or the latest gucci purse you bought either. The blogosphere is packed with boring crap about cats and how mean mom is and how miserable yet another teenager's life is and nobody understands. I can skip those because that's what those blogs are about.
When i turn to Belmont Club I don't want to read about his trip to the poconos by the fire with his sweetheart, Valentines day or not.
