Used without Sobek's permission, but I'm feelin' like an outlaw.
Looking at Sobek's pictures, one understands how Anne Rice developed such a luscious writing style.
Me? I grew up in New Jersey. I can write about vampires in Bayonne. When they're not sucking blood they're riding the bus to scenic Atlantic City for some wicked nickle-slots at the Taj Majal.
Meanwhile... Dave from Garfield Ridge says maybe we should just give up New Orleans, and Andrea Harris calls him a pussy.
I like that. Pussy Dave From Pussy Garfield Pussy Ridge. I think I'll change it to that when I update the blogroll. Actually, it should get him some additional hits, and he'll like that, being the hit-craving man-whore he is.
It's a question being asked, though. Confederate Yankee notes that Diamond City was destroyed by flood in 1899, and rebuilt on a less precarious site.

Deteriorating conditions in New Orleans will force authorities to evacuate the thousands of people at city shelters, including the Louisiana Superdome, where a policeman told CNN unrest was escalating.The officer expressed concern that the situation could worsen overnight after three shootings, looting and a number of attempted carjackings during the afternoon.
As was observed by someone I'm too lazy to google, 10% of people are naturally and almost wholly good, and will do the right thing under any situation. 10% are naturally and almost wholly evil, and will do evil under any situation, even when it's really not even in their best interests.
80% have a situational morality, and will be good when civilization demands it, and enforces order, and will do evil when civlization permits it, or disintegrates due to chaos, whether natural or man-made.
Most rioters and looters fall into that 80%. They see the 10% who jump at the chance to destroy or steal, and notice that they suffer no consequences. So they too join in.
Order has to be restored quickly, and roughly if necessary, to bring such folks back into a state of orderliness.

Dave-- just blogroll Ace back as DUMBASS ACE. You are entirely right about not rebuilding New Orleans. For Crying out loud its six feet below sea level average elevation. What this nation needs is a DUMBASS law: anyone DUMBASS enough to build below sea level has to pay for the flood damage themselves with no government payment or insurance payments. P.S. I am very sorry for those caught in this disaster, but it would be foolish to rebuild on the same site and have this same catastrophe to deal with in the future.

I remember living in SoCal during the 1992 LA riots. I was listening to the radio on the way home from work, and just as I pulled into my driveway, Pres. Bush (41) gave a speech asking for calm and order. And I started crying as I sat in my car and listened, thinking: "This can't be America, and these can't be Americans."
America has, of course, always been about opportunity and freedom, but it used to be about destiny and vision as well. That's the tactical solution, but strategically we need to cut the liberal rhetoric off at the root and reinstill some serious values and vision in the low-life sector. Otherwise we lose ground with every crisis. Note that in this case they're looting right in front of the police, with no consequences. Next time the police will be instructed to help them.
They did catch a lot of looters in the aftermath, but I think the northerly region (Hollywood) had better success than South Central down to Long Beach (where I lived).

I visited New Orleans on several occasions, starting with the World SF Convention in 1989. 100 degree heat and 100% humidity. We wondered how much more it would take before saw rain clouds forming at eye level.
Every vist was at a different time of year and the weather was always at best unpleasant. But we had a good time. I just couldn't image living there. When I first saw how the city sat in a basin beneath the levels of the river and the lake on each side, I realized this place could easily cease to be in my lifetime. My relatives on the East Coast would always assert that my native Southern California would be laid waste by earthquake but the worst of the California quakes in my four decades were far less devastating than what has happened in Louisiana.
They say the French Quarter may be largely spared but I suspect that if I'm ever there again it just won;t be the same.
The looting isn't that surprising when you consider what demographic comprises much of the group that stayed behind. While many of them are normal folks who merely lacked the means to flee in time, many of them are of that barbarian underclass always waiting for their moment to run wild.
Unfortunately, this is the nightmare version of the old joke about New Orleans. That they can't fight crime or disaster because they have NOPD and NOFD.

I went to Ole Miss, so New Orleans was at least a once-a-year thing. Mardi Gras four or five times, the D-Day Museum, random bar crawls, my first date with Candice after the Kosovo deployment. I hope it's rebuilt somehow, some way. Too much of me is in that town to lose it back to the bayou.

No guys. See, it's Bush's fault that our troops are dedicated over sea's and aren't here to help with disaster recovery and martial law. If the troops were here instead of fighting in an unjust invasion, the mess would already be cleaned up and there'd be no looting.
Speaking of which, stealing is stealing. Those ripping off jewelry stores and the like are scum. But I have a harder time judging those taking clothes, food, and water. Seems to me that if I were poor, my home was gone and there was no help in sight, I would have to figure out a way to survive. Unless you have family coming to help or that you can get to, scavenging might be the only alternative.

I'm not sure narcissist is a fair description. I mean, that diagnosis seems sort of self-fulfilling. I'd get pretty annoyed my own bad (narcissistic?) self if someone jumped to a diagnosis of me based on the odd comment or two. And it doesn't make sense to rebuild it in the same way and at the same location...especially knowing that the lands were sinking and will continue to sink. This exact scenario of a hurricane taking out New Orleans has existed as a possibility for years, and now it's happened. I imagine that NO WILL get rebuilt, but it should be built farther up the Mississippi in an area that isn't prone to being flooded as much as a below-sea-level area is.
But, Nature may have made it impossible for New Orleans to get rebuilt where it was. We'll have to see.

So too with Californians that expect people whose houses are sited in prudent areas will pay for the swank houses that burn or slide down the steep hills of loose soil and creosote brush they are built on.
If NO is to be rebuilt, it should be tourist hotels and attractions built above grade, just the French Quarter enclosed by an improved surrounding Levee, and the commercial port. With all the slums and tract housing that cannot be saved from the next major hurricane relocated out of NO by eminent domain onto higher ground elsewhere.

Err, that's 3 more feet every decade...but that's still bad enough. It becomes a safety issue once most of the houses would be completely submerged in minutes from any major Levee failure (not just Hurricanes - terrorists, big ship smacking one open) and no escape exists to higher ground. Many houses there are only 15 -18 feet high.

Hi All,
Why are such people as Anon, well, anonymous (I did look up the domain, but it seems to be that of a url squatter)? The word pussy has been cast about recklessly (I know that I am at Ace's place, so allowances must be made
), but Anon seems to earn it. I have never been a Republican, but I am a conservative. I am also not a liar, but can Anon say the same? Maybe pussy isn't quite the correctly descriptive word for this person, but puerile might work. The word troll also comes to mind. I long for the days when you could actually have a reasonable argument with liberals.

You'll find that Ace's site has a unique charm, as well as a great group of commenters. But for some strange reason, it has the worst trolls. I mean, bottom of the barrel. They tend to show up only once or twice, long enough to spit out some canned talking points, get pwn3d within minutes, and never come back.
Except Cedarford. That neanderthal, Nazi motherfucker hangs around like a bad case of jock itch.

I believe that I have even commented to you before. I respect your opinion highly (well at least so far
). I suppose that you will not see this. It is unusual that I would chance upon your post. There might be some serious money for someone to write software which keeps track of such stuff. I am just saying.
I have read Ace much longer than I have had the balls to post anything.
I even wrote Ace recently (it was complimentary, I swear!
). I basically said that Lileks and Gnat can't be my only refuge when I need a respite from the political battles, and Ace is the place after Allah retired apparently. It is not really that I am a wimp, but lefties generally bore me to tears. It is obvious that they do have talking points as you say, and almost always drop the ball after they have exhausted them. They do not seem to be able to be embarrassed. On the Right (the Left has not ruined this word yet, but you just wait--right will be wrong!
) side of the blogosphere, people respond to criticism sensibly. I have even corrected some bloggers myself, and almost all respond with thanks. I sent an e-mail to Laura Ingraham (and I hope that her cancer woes will improve) after some apparent ignorance about the word loth or loath. Apparently I was not exactly alone.
I did not hear back from her, but I did not expect to. Her staff beat her mercilessly the next day about her learning a new word (she assumed that the old goof senator Byrd meant the word loathe). I found it sort of humorous that her staff felt that they could beat her up after they obviously did not correct her at the time.
Thanks for covering my six, you assholes! I would have had them beaten, but that is just me.
