— Ace What New Orleans was, but may never be again.

Used without Sobek's permission, but I'm feelin' like an outlaw.
Looking at Sobek's pictures, one understands how Anne Rice developed such a luscious writing style.
Me? I grew up in New Jersey. I can write about vampires in Bayonne. When they're not sucking blood they're riding the bus to scenic Atlantic City for some wicked nickle-slots at the Taj Majal.
Meanwhile... Dave from Garfield Ridge says maybe we should just give up New Orleans, and Andrea Harris calls him a pussy.
I like that. Pussy Dave From Pussy Garfield Pussy Ridge. I think I'll change it to that when I update the blogroll. Actually, it should get him some additional hits, and he'll like that, being the hit-craving man-whore he is.
It's a question being asked, though. Confederate Yankee notes that Diamond City was destroyed by flood in 1899, and rebuilt on a less precarious site.
It's Awful:

More Video... At CNN, of the damage, and the looters.
This is nice:
Deteriorating conditions in New Orleans will force authorities to evacuate the thousands of people at city shelters, including the Louisiana Superdome, where a policeman told CNN unrest was escalating. The officer expressed concern that the situation could worsen overnight after three shootings, looting and a number of attempted carjackings during the afternoon.
As was observed by someone I'm too lazy to google, 10% of people are naturally and almost wholly good, and will do the right thing under any situation. 10% are naturally and almost wholly evil, and will do evil under any situation, even when it's really not even in their best interests.
80% have a situational morality, and will be good when civilization demands it, and enforces order, and will do evil when civlization permits it, or disintegrates due to chaos, whether natural or man-made.
Most rioters and looters fall into that 80%. They see the 10% who jump at the chance to destroy or steal, and notice that they suffer no consequences. So they too join in.
Order has to be restored quickly, and roughly if necessary, to bring such folks back into a state of orderliness.

The "fabric of society" is much thinner than most people realize when the shit really hits the fan.
The "you loot, we shoot" signs need to go up.

"Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.
Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.
The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond."
A children's hospital. Jesus Christ.
Mike adds:
"I would love to see looters get shot dead on the spot. Fuck this shit. Lord of the Flies was a cautionary tale, not a fucking manual on how to live your useless lives. "
Indeed, as a certain guy we all know might say. In-fucking-deed.

America has, of course, always been about opportunity and freedom, but it used to be about destiny and vision as well. The left's unrelenting criticism has taken the vision of progress and achievement away from us and replaced it with a dream of equality and peace. A seductive dream, indeed, but in striving to achieve it they have focused our attention inward to an unhealthy, and now self-destructive extent.
It's hard to fault the opportunistic crimes of people who feel that not only there is no purpose to their individual existence, but no purpose to the existence of the nation or even mankind. The looters aren't stealing from fellow Americans who share the American dream, they're stealing from the mythical "man," the djinn the liberals conjured up as the foil to their dream.
We used to look outward towards the future, but now we're feeding on our own intestines and arguing about who is getting the biggest portion.
Posted by: geoff at August 30, 2005 10:52 PM (J0ZE/)
No, I'll fault them alright and throw their sorry asses in prison. They're fucking low lifes. Here's something that should cheer you up: After the riots most of the looters, at least in the Hollywood area, were snitched off by their neighbors and co-workers.
Posted by: at August 30, 2005 11:22 PM (Ehvu2)
That's the tactical solution, but strategically we need to cut the liberal rhetoric off at the root and reinstill some serious values and vision in the low-life sector. Otherwise we lose ground with every crisis. Note that in this case they're looting right in front of the police, with no consequences. Next time the police will be instructed to help them.
They did catch a lot of looters in the aftermath, but I think the northerly region (Hollywood) had better success than South Central down to Long Beach (where I lived).
Posted by: geoff at August 30, 2005 11:52 PM (J0ZE/)
Every vist was at a different time of year and the weather was always at best unpleasant. But we had a good time. I just couldn't image living there. When I first saw how the city sat in a basin beneath the levels of the river and the lake on each side, I realized this place could easily cease to be in my lifetime. My relatives on the East Coast would always assert that my native Southern California would be laid waste by earthquake but the worst of the California quakes in my four decades were far less devastating than what has happened in Louisiana.
They say the French Quarter may be largely spared but I suspect that if I'm ever there again it just won;t be the same.
The looting isn't that surprising when you consider what demographic comprises much of the group that stayed behind. While many of them are normal folks who merely lacked the means to flee in time, many of them are of that barbarian underclass always waiting for their moment to run wild.
Unfortunately, this is the nightmare version of the old joke about New Orleans. That they can't fight crime or disaster because they have NOPD and NOFD.

I went to Ole Miss, so New Orleans was at least a once-a-year thing. Mardi Gras four or five times, the D-Day Museum, random bar crawls, my first date with Candice after the Kosovo deployment. I hope it's rebuilt somehow, some way. Too much of me is in that town to lose it back to the bayou.
Now as for the looters, shoot them all then start on their political enablers.

On a side note: Ace, we have moss-covered oak trees and stuff like that all over Florida (yes, we have some left after all the hurricanes -- they're tough trees), in fact all over the South. Mossy oaks aren't what make New Orleans unique -- it's the buildings and history and culture. Cities outside of New York do have those things.

Speaking of which, stealing is stealing. Those ripping off jewelry stores and the like are scum. But I have a harder time judging those taking clothes, food, and water. Seems to me that if I were poor, my home was gone and there was no help in sight, I would have to figure out a way to survive. Unless you have family coming to help or that you can get to, scavenging might be the only alternative.

WTF?
Anon, here's a little something just for you:
Question:
What is the reaction of a narcissist likely to be when confronted with your text?
Answer:
It takes a major life crisis to force the narcissist to face up to his False Self: a painful breakdown of a close (symbiotic) relationship, a failure (in business, in a career, in the pursuit of a goal), the death of a parent, imprisonment, or a disease.
Under normal circumstances, the narcissist denies that he is one (denial defence mechanism) and reacts with rage to any hint at being so diagnosed. The narcissist employs a host of intricate and interwoven defence mechanisms: rationalisation, intellectualisation, projection, projective identification, splitting, suppression and denial (to name but a few) – to sweep his narcissism under the psychological carpet.
When at risk of getting in touch with the reality of being mentally disturbed (and, as a result, with his emotions) – the narcissist displays the whole spectrum of emotional reactions usually associated with bereavement. At first he denies the facts, ignores them and distorts them to fit an alternative, coherent, non-narcissistic, interpretation.
Then, he becomes enraged.
Read it for yourself.

So, no, I expect this encounter to have absolutely zero long-term effect on Anon. As far as I can tell, he's average and ordinary in every way. Textbook. Commonplace.
He's been manipulated by the media. He's a victim of Left-wing propaganda. He probably thinks very highly of himself by being an anti-Bush Republican (he was probably an anti-Clinton Democrat back in the day), but doesn't realize that his supreme self-absorbtion is not what makes him intelligent and independent -- on the contrary, it makes him highly susceptible to the kind of programming in which the Left specializes.
He's a patsy.

Female parts-name-calling or not, Dave has a point. Rebuilding New Orleans back where it was would be foolish...unless our savvy engineers could come up with a waterproof city. This is NOT the same thing as rebuilding after other disasters because you're not talking about rebuilding using technology that could change the outcome next time. California, for example, doesn't compare because we have the ability to build structures that can withstand earthquakes. Do we have the ability to make levees and pumps that can withstand what Katrina delivered? And if so, would it be worth the extreme costs to build and maintain such a formidable undertaking?
It NEVER made sense to build a city below sea level, especially in the possible path of a hurricane (which distinguishes NO from Denmark and other below-sea-level locations). And it doesn't make sense to rebuild it in the same way and at the same location...especially knowing that the lands were sinking and will continue to sink. This exact scenario of a hurricane taking out New Orleans has existed as a possibility for years, and now it's happened. I imagine that NO WILL get rebuilt, but it should be built farther up the Mississippi in an area that isn't prone to being flooded as much as a below-sea-level area is.
But, Nature may have made it impossible for New Orleans to get rebuilt where it was. We'll have to see.
Later,
bbeck

I agree with Dave. Rebuilding NO when it is already 8-12 feet below sea level and sinking another 3 feet every year and with no science that would assure it wouldn't completely reflood the next Cat 4 or 5 Hurricane - would be profoundly stupid and a waste of 20-30 billion dollars. Adding that it is time to roll back the influence of wealthy developers that put million dollar homes on barrier islands or along hurrican bediviled shorelines confident that the taxpayers in the rest of the country will bleed and bleed again to make the reckless dwellers on unsuitable land whole again. So too with Californians that expect people whose houses are sited in prudent areas will pay for the swank houses that burn or slide down the steep hills of loose soil and creosote brush they are built on.
If NO is to be rebuilt, it should be tourist hotels and attractions built above grade, just the French Quarter enclosed by an improved surrounding Levee, and the commercial port. With all the slums and tract housing that cannot be saved from the next major hurricane relocated out of NO by eminent domain onto higher ground elsewhere.

After all, St. Cindy says so:
Well, George and I are leaving Crawford today. George is finished playing golf and telling his fables in San Diego , so he will be heading to Louisiana to see the devastation that his environmental policies and his killing policies have caused. Recovery would be easier and much quicker if almost ½ of the three states involved National Guard were not in Iraq. All of the National Guard's equipment is in Iraq also. Plus, with the 2 billion dollars a week that the private contractors are siphoning from our treasury, how are we going to pay for helping our own citizens in Louisiana , Mississippi, and Alabama? And, should I dare say "global warming?" and be branded as a "conspiracy theorist" on top of everything else the reich-wingers say about me.
