Economy Balances on Edge of Recession; Celebrities, Millionaires Hardest Hit
— Ace

No, really.

TV's biggest names are doing what they can to combat the worst economic slump in 80 years.

...

"We're not using water bottles at home any more," says Kate Walsh of ABC's "Private Practice." "We're drinking out of the tap."

...

"We are not taking a vacation this year," says Valerie Bertinelli, star of the upcoming Lifetime original movie "True Confessions of A Hollywood Starlet."

...

Actors have taken it especially hard in the wallet this year. The recent four-month Hollywood writers' strike cost the entertainment industry more than $500 million, according to a recent report.

"I think we really need to rethink how we spend our money," says Carnie Wilson, who appears in the upcoming reality series "Outsiders Inn."

"I don't know how to make gas prices drop," she says. "But I can try to control how many things I buy at Target for f-k sake! I go crazy there."

As Hard News Man Dan Rather suggested: Courage.

In related news, John Edwards and Reille Hunter are being forced to economize on hotel amenities used during late-night trysts. "Just bring your own pornography and bi-curious erotica to the room," the former presidential contender suggests. "It's not like that $20.00 'Adult Movie Package' is so great or anything. Frankly, in a lot of hotels, they cut out the good parts, and by 'the good parts,' I mean busty she-males with rock-hard pneumatic he-throbbers."

Even Al Gore is Economizing: Note his James Bond Archvillain Level houseboat does not have the standard-issue James Bond Archvillain helipad.

Thanks to DrewM for that.

Even More Economizing! George Clooney's fundraiser for fellow Hollywood celebrity Barack Obama will be held in downscale Geneva, Switzerland, rather than in ritzy Cleveland, where the event was originally booked.

Oh, I can't wait to hear Hollywood's elites whining about global warming from Geneva in an event that could easily have taken place in Burbank.

Via Hot Air.

And Yet Some Persevere: Marget Cho to star in series about supermodel who dies and is reincarnated in body of frumpy lawyer.

Here's the sad news: Although Cho would have been just plum terrific at playing frumpy, she actually gets to play the lawyer's... assistant.

Perhaps we should stop talking so much about Hollywood's Blacklist and instead talk about its Whitelist -- archliberal/leftist industry favorites, such as Cho and George Clooney, who just keep getting work no matter how many times they fail to draw an audience.

Thanks to DPUD.

17 Agree on the Carter years. Tough on money then. It's getting expensive now, though. However, interest rates were near 20% with Carter in office and unemployment was near 8%.

What's different now (200 is that a) the gas prices have responded quickley to market forces (less people driving) and b) regarding food prices, people will change their spending habits. Also, the auto companies are being hit damned hard, and rightly so, for making them damned SUVs.

25 Wait, how can we be having the worst economic slump since the Depression

Well not a Depression per say; that much is obvious hyperbole, but to answer the second part of your question - revisions.

The Fed revises the numbers often. The bet is that the past few quarters' numbers will be revised downward in the next report. Additionally the whole 'two quarters of negative growth' is not an entirely accurate definition. It's just used because MSM journalists don't understand economics and they sure as hell couldn't explain to anyone else.

NBER is one of the groups that track and advise on the US' economic status. Here's the their caveat: " The NBER does not define a recession in terms of two consecutive quarters of decline in real GDP. Rather, a recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. For more information, see the latest announcement on how the NBER's Business Cycle Dating Committee chooses turning points in the Economy and its latest memo, dated 07/17/03."

Here's a pretty good explanation of why we could be in a recession: Recessions often begin with positive GDP Data.

I wish.  I had my own business during that period, included a lot of buying and selling.  My short-term money was at 22%.  I also had a 15-year mortgage at 14%.

Maybe all these whiners should re-run Jimmy Carter's "misery index" and check out the current situation versus the late 70s.

My cousin was engaged to Carnie Wilson for a few years. Glad that didn't work out. I suspect her family growing up was so bizarre that she latches on to semi-normal people and lives vicariously through them. I was really amazed when she spoke at greater length than anyone at my grandmother's funeral.

Now, this woman who has never known anything remotely like poverty, is called upon to comment on her need to cut back on her spending. Please, do the world a favor and resist the urge to deliver a soundbite in order to remind people you have another attempt at a TV show coming.

OTOH, whatever became of Carnie's sister, Wendy? She was incredibly hot. I was always hoping she'd turn up at some family event.

I question your call of "hot".  On the other hand, she hasn't deliberately and continuously insulted me, and my intelligence; so she's definitely in the running.

I swore after McCain-Feingold that I wouldn't support him for dog-catcher.   Has he backed off that piece of sh*t yet?  Ok, well then I'm not voting for him.

Has Obama's continuously changing stances gotten around to something rational, sane, or plausible?  Ok, not him.

Bob Barr and the Libertarians still stupid on foreign policy and border control?  Damn, well that sucks.

So, Paris Hilton, or a nearly unknown third party.  I was going to vote for zombie Reagan, but Paris seems to have some halfway decent recommendations.
