— Ace One silly bit of made-up information I've been confronted with is the frequent assertion by lefties that Levi Johnston is, and I quote, an "eighth grader." I'd seen that claim made two or three times on different web-sites... including this one, via one of our Moby Trolls.
When someone asked me about this (she had just read it herself), I tried to make sense of it, and tried to imagine why the hell a 17 year old girl would be dating an "eighth grader," and how it was possible they could be married with him at that age, and what kind of absolutely horrible marriage that would turn out to be.
And what about statutory rape? That's quite an age difference. Four or five years means a lot at that age.
And then the dime dropped, and I asked, "Who the hell says he's an eighth grader? The same lefties who claim that Trig is an incestuous love child of Bristol?"
The thing is, they just keep repeating crap like this over and over. One of these shits makes it up, and the rest just start repeating it.
Then Madame MuscleGlutes sees if she can push it into the mainstream.
The normal state we exist in is to assume most information we read is true, or sorta true, or true-ish.
We assume that people may be biased or just plain wrong. But we don't assume that hundreds of people conspire together to coordinate a lie they not only positively know is false, but they happen to know that first-hand, as they themselves invented the facts a couple of hours ago.
That's a weird thing: Coordinated mass lying. Shit is slipping by us that we're assuming might be true or somewhat true (those missing months of Bristol's when she was carrying baby Trig, that "Alaskan Airline crew members stated Palin didn't look pregnant," etc.) just because we're simply not used to thousands of people agreeing to spread deliberate lies to as many people as they can. The fact that multiple people on multiple websites are claiming it, seemingly independently, tricks us into thinking, subconsciously maybe, "Gee, they must have gotten that from some article; they all couldn't just be lying in unison."
Or could they?
I'll print this posting found at DU, tipped to me by the great Larwyn, again:
122. What many here don't understand. It doesn't matter if it's true or not. RUMOR IS TRUTH.The modern laws of media hype and political warfare have a useful tenet:
Repeat ANYTHING or raise false concern over ANYTHING and it is likely to be planted in the conscious/subconscious of many voters.
If people start to think that there might be something fishy with Palin's last kid (if hers), then that's FINE. One more doubt (whether tied to reality or not) is another hesitation at the ballot box.
GET WITH THE PROGRAM PEOPLE. The "rising above it" bullshit has served us so well in the past, hasn't it?
If you have problems with the story, then STFU and get out of the way of Dems who are engaged in MODERN POLITICAL WARFARE. Go tend your garden or some other pedestrian task, because the "concern trolls" are not helping shape the message.
J
So now I kind of have it stuck in my head that Bristol's soon to be husband is an eighth grader.
Except he's not. He's 18 and just graduated high school.

Not really the "eighth grader" I was expecting him to be.
Seriously, be aware, there is a deliberate and -- I guess the word is "cynical," but that seems to understate the situation so grossly -- viciously, haughtily cynical effort to simply put out as many lies as possible and repeat them as frequently as possible.
The old rule that lurks in the back of our minds is inoperative: "This many people can't all just be deliberately spreading the same lie!"
As their cult leader says: "Yes we can."
"They must be held accountable:" Um, I'm sorry -- accountable for what?
Obama and the Blogs: Is Obama behind this?
It is kinda true that suddenly every left-wing source was pushing this story -- or, as in Colmes' case, where he was too timid to push the story itself, he pushed a related story that didn't accuse Palin of faking a pregnancy but "raised questions" about why she'd board a flight in such a delicate condition. (Wink, wink.)
Talking Points Memo and Kos and Sullivan of course get Obama tips. Did Axelrod suggest to Sullivan the story was worth pursuing? It is almost too ludicrous to even imagine Sullivan didn't ask Axelrod about the story's provenance before running it.
And, well... who knows who "ArcXIX" will turn out to be.
But I don't think that Obama has to encourage his cultists to be rotten lying inhuman bastards. They seem to be eager self-starting volunteers.
Obama definitely is pushing stuff on to the lefty bloggers after the MSM turns it down -- stuff like wild claims about the race card and white women, etc. -- but this still seems to be a pure nutroots sort of thing. It's their particular insane style.
Hmmm... If Obama's pledged to not spread this sort of filth, isn't he required to stop all aides from communicating with/coordinating with/tipping Kos and Sullivan?
Hmmm II: Check out how Obama's cultists are setting up Moby sites to attack Palin and McCain.
(Note: Read through to the update at the end before you blow your gasket too much; the guy running these sites says he has no connection to Obama's campaign. Whether that's true or not, who knows. Let's say he has no official, provable connection and let it lie at that.)
Edit: I quoted a source who Mr. Right told me wasn't necessarily authoritative. Since the quote really didn't advance what I was saying much, anyway, I've decided discretion is the better part of valor and just omitted the reference.

And Rocks is right; Obama is trying to set up his Sister Souljah moment at the expense of the liberal blogs. He did the same thing in his 2004 Senate race, where he was pontificating about "leaving family out of it" while encouraging his nutball supporters to be emailing all sorts of details about Jack Ryan's love life.
The counter-meme is simple; make it clear and obvious that not only did Obama know about these slurs, but that his campaign was actively encouraging people to make them.

Clinton was a masterful politician, while Obama is a fine speechmaker and little more. The nutroots are his base, so I think he views them as his meal ticket.
Telling them to STFU is a little too nuanced for him

Back when Fahrenheit 911 came out, I saw a trailer which contained the allegation that Bush had allowed OBL's relatives to leave the country over the objections of the FBI and while the ban on commercial aviation was still in effect. I treated it as a "fact" and was concerned about it, wondering why they would have done such a thing. Of course the truth is that the ban on aviation had been lifted, the FBI had finished questioning them and that it was Richard Clarke who had ultimately green-lighted their departure.
The problem is that most Republicans, like most people, really are open-minded. We do not want to automatically believe only the best of our allies and only the worst of our opponents. We will consider new facts when we encounter them and be ready to criticize bad behavior of those generally support.
The reward for this is for us to have our good faith manipulated by the worst of the left who are willing to make up any lie and are willing to ignore any refutation no matter how iron-clad. I could drag up a Hitler quote, but why stoop to that level when that S.o.C. Durbin will suffice. I don't have the exact words, but Durbin once said that it didn't matter what his opponents were guilty of, it only mattered what he could get them indicted for. In other words, accusations need not be true they only must be damaging.
I don't know about the rest of you, but while I don't want to give up on aiming for intellectual integrity, I die a little inside every time I am forced to face up to how naive it is in this political climate.

yeah, this is a totally new phenomenon. Just ask Dan Quayle, George Bush's supermarket scanner, the entire freaking hollywood blacklist era, and probably a hundred other things we don't know about because the lies are still holding up. Leftists (Communists) spread lies, it's what they do, they don't even need an Alinsky to tell them that. At least now thanks to blogs like this we can catch them and spread the word just a bit, imagine what it must have been like before Rush and the blogs.

I think a partial explanation for the nastiness of the lefty response to Palin is that they have to justify their own hate to themselves. If McCain had picked any of the obvious choices, the Left's attacks would have been long-planned. Every rabid lefty attack chipmunk would have an entire manifesto ready explaining why the pick was a horrible person whom it would be noble and virtueous to slander. The Palin pick blindsided them, and they found themselves hating and plotting to destroy someone whom they had no reason to hate. Thus the frantic delving into the muck of the fever swamps.
In short, having already decided to act viciously to whoever was picked, they now have to convince themselves that the target (who turned out to be someone they didn't expect) deserves it.

Rocks, that person suggesting a sistah souljah moment was the adorable horse toothed MKH, supported by Juan Williams.
NDT, it's actually more than that, as far as the ryan divorce records. They recruited a "respectful" paper, to file suit for the release of the records, and a complicite judge, while agreeing with the ryans that it would in fact do harm to the child (the thing that the sealing was supposed to prevent in the first place) the judge did it anyways.
Both ryans opposed it, the judge, supposedly the advocate of the child and the public, said fuck the chiled, and fuck you two, releasing the info based on an opinion that the individual he was most supposed to represent (the child) would in fact be harmed by the release.
It was a disgrace, and Obama did the same thing, with the "I don't think this should be a part." but he really didn't oppose it.

Wow, I'm going to do something odd here, and actually defend Obama.
Kinda.
I don't think Obama is pushing these rumors or is playing the plausable deniability game here. If for no other reason than fear of backlash. But I think the guy is naive and maybe foolish on how the world works... but not evil.
His comments, I believe off the cuff about leaving family alone, seemed genuinely sincere to me.
Buy these DU and Kos worms on the other hand, they know they're intentionally spreading lies about 17-year old innocents, and doing it with glee, because they think it helps the "Progressive cause." Progressive my left testicle. And Sullivan, he's even worse because he should, well, know better. Even though he doesn't.
(And William Jennings Bryan would be spinning in his grave if he knew these were the folks who took up the Progressive mantle.)
But back to Obama. I don't think he's into this. He's a nube. He's Bambi. He is, if you were to simply talk to him about everyday stuff non political, a pretty decent guy. But he tapped into the anger of the Netroots for support, and he is now realizing what sorts of people these folks truly are.
That is why Obama is scary. He lives in Oprah world.
And his supporters will do anything, anything, to get him elected. Including Goebbels-esque coordinated lying. (Yes I know, Godwin and all.)

But I agree with Lee about Obama: I don't know if he's naive - at least not anymore, not after the education of the campaign - but I honestly don't think he's behind the Palin smears. As Ace pointed out, why push them yourself when you have the nutroots willing to do that so eagerly? A guy like Axelrod, however? Oh, I could definitely believe that. People who live outside of Chicago will have a hard time understanding just how hobo-fucking DIRTY and smashmouth Chicago politics can be, but I would argue that it outstrips any other city in the nation, including NYC. And it makes national political contests look like tea parties. Axelrod is from this milieu, and while I even doubt that HE is behind the Palin smears personally, I have no doubt whatsoever that he has taken account of them and expected them to happen.
Axelrod (and the Chicago-based Obama team) ARE NOT MORONS, however, which leads me to wonder whether their understanding of the likely path Palin slurs would take on the nutroot vine is something they tacitly approve of. I think it far more likely that - since they're not fucking stupid - they're mortified about this and want it to die as soon as possible.
Which makes me smile. Obama's biggest fans are his worst enemy, as per usual. The GOP has traditionally been The Stupid Party, and our behavior in office over the past 8 years really hasn't done anything to change that image, but let it never be said that our rank and file contributed to the sort of self-destructive own-goaling that the Nutroots have.

Pick a tactic that you and your people enjoy
Freeze the target, personalize the issue, and attack, attack, ATTACK.
Alinsky loved to ambush people with false information that they couldn't respond to, and create the illusion of an upswelling of opinion in his favor, or the illusion of a general consensus.
There will be no "sister souljah moment" (SSM) because Obama is plausibly insulated from the nutroots crowd. All he has to do is keep issuing bland pronouncements like "X is off limits" and the media won't push him to do anything further. All an SSM would do is make people
Posted by: Daryl Herbert at September 01, 2008 08:56 PM (YvLui)
"They don't need an Alinsky to tell them that" - ah, but Alinsky did tell them that. All these lies are straight out of Rules For Radicals. McCain needs to nail him to the fucking wall on this.
Obama needs to consider this, and consider it now. If a democracy is taken over by thuggery and lies, in what way is it a democracy at all anymore? How much legitimacy will President Obama be able to claim?

Minor Tangent: New Cool Thing About Palin
There's a video up on google video of Palin fielding CSPAN caller questions for a half hour in Februay at the site of a governors' meeting. She's poised and articulate and all that we expect, the part I want to call attention to comes about 18 minutes in.
The interviewer asks her about whether she'd accept a VP bid from McCain and presses her. And she demurs the way you're supposed to, but she doesn't pull any false modesty. "I would love to serve at the national level, eventually." And goes on to express how she has her hands full with Alaskan issues &c.
But this woman knows she has chops and she's not going to pretend otherwise.

You know, Ace ...I ain't so sure you got this quite right, yet.
More and more, I've begun to think that these fuckwits actually believe this crap they spew ...that they really don't have the skills to differentiate between truth and non-truth. Their moral sense is so twisted that they've no inherent discernment of the difference between good and evil.
Combine these deficits with a total lack of any kind of ability to reason in the rational sense, and you kind of arrive at the sad conclusion that even speaking with them is pointless. (Pray for 'em, yes: but debate? - It's an utterly wasted effort. Their only hope is for a miraculous intervention.)

Freddoso's book "The Case Against Obama" is a hatchet job, and like other books in this genre it throws the iron filings at the magnet and invites us to see if they fall in a pattern.
The pattern here is that Obama is an admirer of strongmen who organise their supporters, take over the nation and ??? and utopia!
But Obama is not secure enough in his own skin to be one of those strongmen himself. He is just about good enough to make the sort of friend who can help him, many of whom are this sort of strongman. Hence, Wright. Hence, Ayers. Hence, Stroger and Daley and Rezko. (Haven't heard of Stroger? You will.)
I expect Obama's cabinet to be full of these petty tyrants and crooks. They will all spend the first two years of his administration bickering amongst themselves. Meanwhile the Democratic Congress will pretty much own the US domestically. Overseas, if you liked how Bush looked into Pooty-poot's soul, then you'll love Obama's puppy-dog-eyes at Hugo Chavez, lil Kim and the various Arab dictators.

We have this all wrong. Obama has been bleating the same message, over and over. A new kind of politics. What's happening in this election certainly seems new. What has changed?
We keep skating around it, because every time we get close to it, our better natures repel us from it, but it's starting to shine with crystal clarity - at least for me.
We keep talking about Obama coming up out of Chicago politics, but we don't ever examine that truth for what it means in terms of modus operandi. It translates roughly, for most people, as "Bad Mean!" We know about projection. We know that, when the netroots accuse us of some dastardly trick, they're revealing more about what they are capable of than what we are actually doing. We laugh at them and keep ourselves above it all, but many of their lies have begun to stick, at the expense of some things we hold dear.
Consider. We make fun of Obama's assertion that campaigning for the Presidency counts as experience. Part of what makes that seem so ridiculous, to me, has been the lack of any tangible connection between what Obama does, and how much people support him. We joke that they've drunk the "kool aid", but we would never suspect the guy in the big glass pitcher suit of being anything more than a prop, in the right place (the refrigerator), at the right time (high noon on a summer day). We've been assigning all of the action to the thirsty kids with empty dixie cups, never to the kool aid guy himself. (At least, never for very long.)
So the folks at Redstate are checking into the Kos kid that most actively advocated the rumor, but they aren't bothering with the one that first brought it up. Hey, someone heard the rumor and posted a poll about whether they should follow it up, but it was some other guy that ran with it, right?
Follow the Money. Ask, Who Benefits? Does it make sense to chase after a bunch of internet yahoos that have no more invested in all this than the applause of virtual buddies, but graciously refuse to consider that the man who reaps the reward, including our trust in his good natured above it allness?
Notice how many times he's stepped in just a little bit too late to be able to put the genie back in the bottle. Are we trying so hard to avoid being dubbed paranoid conspiracy nuts that we're letting the obvious slide on by? I wish I knew. But I hate the idea that the lovely Sarah could end up covered with so much smear that people decide it's not worth the effort to find the light shining from underneath.

Honestly just try and post a negative story about Obama on popular sites. They swarm on it to shut it down.
I dont doubt that the nutroots arent proactive themselves but believe me there is a lot of winking and secret handshakes between these two groups.

A leader can best be judged by the results of the movement they create. So we should hang every one of Obama's supporters around his neck. Every lie should be titled as "Obama supporters are claiming..." rather than "Lefties are claiming..."
Right now they are actually using "liberal" and "leftist" as a smokescreen to peddle Obama's smears while giving him deniability. I call it the "Smear and Smile" strategy. It's time we name every smear after its daddy, even if he tries to deny paternity.
"Obama's supporters are launching new attacks against Sarah Palin's 5 month old son"

Okay. I really don't think that, but I've reached the point where I'm afraid to point a finger in the direction I know is right, because I might be thought a conspiracy nut. Not so afraid, obviously, that I don't go ahead and do it.
I want evidence dammit! A breadcrumb trail of IP addresses, and now, before the trail is processed into bird droppings. If messages are being sent, then there is a way to intercept them.
And hell yes Tyrtle, we tie this crap around his neck. We don't need to wait for the magical revelation of the breadcrumbs - they certainly don't.
Mr. Orwell. I think the only ones that ever bought that fiction will never let it go, but we at least have to keep contesting it. Anonymous worries about Il Duce, and so do I. I grew up in - and still live in - a mostly Jewish community. I've spent most of my life trying to figure out how to recognize the coming of the totalitarian movement. I've taken the measure of the courage that such situations require, and I pray that I'll never need to go beyond the academic.

Palin is like cancer to the left, just like Clarence Thomas. They will do anything to destroy her, because they know the risk she represents to them. Everything is about identity politics and making people dependant on the state to them. She turns that on its head.

Want some advice? If you see a smear against Levi Johnston on a prominent lefty site, screencap it.
There's a higher standard of proof when bringing a lawsuit for defamation against a public figure. Defamation against some 18 year old recent high school grad and hockey player? Not so much.
He's only being dragged into the public spotlight by the smear merchants. If I were him, I'd be calling up a lawyer today.

But there's another narrative of which we should be aware. If there are indeed players of 3-dimensional chess manipulating our society, what if the motive is sheer destabilization for destabilization itself? If everything is settled and calm, status quo gets reinforced. If one is out of control (politically/economically) yet remains powerful, that is an undesirable position. What to do? Destabilize. You tear down from within and hope that your position is enhanced. Even if your perfect plan fails, you at least changed the environment and upset the status quo which wasn't helping you anyway. You can always try to destabilize again. This is standard fare to subversion and pretty common in any society. Undermine the government or the politics that compose it and move in with your own team. People like Soros are quite effective in this sort of mission.
What's more and in particular to the U.S., we are in the midst of various debates on the freedom of speech. See Fairness Doctrine and McCain-Feingold. Those who would try to regulate speech to mold politics know that we, collectively want "free speech." It's not really true because we've seen how the fascist Left (and the legacy media) have been propagandizing and filtering for decades, but in principle, "we" support the First Amendment. Now, with the subversive message machines we have on the internet, it's getting harder to know what's true or how to refute that which is virtualized first on the net and then in the mind. Also more difficult is attributing the disinformation and checking the source. Enter the desire for government intervention by the masses to force the validation of who, what, when, where, and why something was written.
What's the point? Even if the smear merchants lose the battle by antagonizing honest debaters, their masters will still win the war by allowing proxies to decry the offensive tactics while they themselves craft legislation to restrict speech or to make it "more fair." As an example, let's apply to current day. The Left prefers the Fairness Doctrine more than the Right because legacy media is dying. With the obscene smears becoming more ubiquitous to destroy candidates, Right and Left will warm to the idea of some sort of control on speech. Congress will be forced by popular demand to respond and we'll have "fairness" thrust upon us. Advantage Left.
Those 3-dimensional chess players will have two bites at the apple. Undermine and smear with the direct and immediate goal of getting your guy in power as a front. Manipulate the puppet. If that fails and you see no short- or mid-term opportunity to turn the government, then press for legislation that would reset the battlefield in your favor. An army of online smear merchants would prove very useful to those who would destabilize.
And with that stream of consciousness, I'm off to my nightmare sleep.

Palin said she was glad that Obama recognized the importance of Alaskan natural gas reserves:
I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaskas natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs, Governor Palin said."
So some lefty bloggers have twisted that into Palin supporting Obama's energy plan. Even Glenn Reynolds ran with it. What turned such a smart guy turn into an Instatard?
Looks like the Palin Effect has the power of several million hydrogen bombs.

I took a look at the politics area last night, and a number of regulars appear to have gone batshit insane over Palin.
I know they're capable of rational discourse, and yet they're repeating the idiotic and vile fake pregnancy crap - and a whole lot else beside. So I started a thread asking why.
If I get an answer beyond "you started it!" I'll report back. But I don't hold out much hope.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at September 02, 2008 01:58 AM (2yngH)
a related story that didn't accuse Palin of faking a pregnancy but "raised questions" about why she'd board a flight in such a delicate condition. (Wink, wink.)
Again, mor evidence as to why we shouldn't trust Palin. Apparently, the grand scheme to make people believe she was pregnant fell apart when she went on a commercial flight not looking pregnant. Didn't she have enough sense to secretly fly in a private jet or to wear her fat suit? Clearly, Rove wsn't at the head of this scheme. They made too many rookie mistakes.

At any rate, I have been given an advantage in life of dealing with nitwits, because I grew up with someone who'd do this.
Not political, no. And not nasty.
But he'd just make shit up - invent it on the spot out of I don't know what - and then actually believe it, once he heard it come out of his own mouth.
He'd state it tepidly, like a guess, like 'I thought..". Then, once he heard his own voice say it, it was accreddited.
"No really, I heard that somewhere".
Yeah, jackass, from you, 15 seconds ago when you made it up.

Since the 1960s, he's run for various political offices, disappearing for hospitalization, popping up again with a new name, stalking charges, declared a vextigious litigant, etc. Anyway, as much as I sympathesize with people suffering from mental illness, he's a real pain in the ass and has been one for decades.

Ace ... once again, you completely miss the forrest for the trees.
"If Obama's pledged to not spread this sort of filth, isn't he required to stop all aides from communicating with/coordinating with/tipping Kos and Sullivan?"
No, but what Obama is supposed to do is announce that he's cut off all advertising from those sites. You see, those sites live off Obama's funding. He's funding those sites with his ads.
Obama is funding the sites spreading the falsehoods, and until he announces that he's no longer funding them - by removing his ads - then these rumors are coming from the Obama campaign machine.
That's the Chicago way, buddy. And it's time you wised up to it.

Of course Obama took the high road in public. He OBVIOUSLY couldn't agree with the trash talk, or it would be the end of the election right there. So he took the high road, while his buddies in Daily Kos et al took the low road. The very low road. For that they are all going to burn in Hell. C'mon everybody, vote Republican this year, and let these clowns pickle in their own malice.
