1 I like Dennis Miller, but am always dogged by the impression that he's probably an asshole in real life. Don't know why.

Miller was great as always, but MAN, one has to listen closely to get all the references and before you can process it, he's off on another!

I think he rocks though.

Well, there used to be a site, I think it was called bitterwaitress.com, that was a forum where folks in the restaurant and services industries could complain about celebrities who were lousy tippers, rude, ill-behaved, etc. And there were several entries for Miller, all negative.

23 Don't worry, Entropy. Pixy specifically took out blinking text while designing the New Comment Thingy. You cannot do it even if you fiddle with the HTML source like Slublog or I do. Similarly, you cannot embed an image residing on some other website.

27 I'm in sales and I'm as "alpha" as it helps to be when I'm at work. I talk a lot of shit and generally feel good about it. But when I'm at a restaurant or bar I become fucking Kringer. I think it might have something to do with my years in pizza delivery and other low-status service industry jobs. I'll never go back to that work (seriously, I'll take a man's life before I do), and I feel a kind of revulsion/pity for most people doing that work.

Somehow with me that translates into 20% tips for average service. I don't want to be their dark spot for the day since there's enough of them without my contributing.
Sometimes I even find myself doing the take out thing just to avoid the whole service thing.

Yeah, his general "smart-alecky-ness" (like I have room to talk) gives rise to the idea that he might be a flaming asshole. Back in his more liberal days, he could be one sarcastic SOB.

Sure, I'm amused generally by his points, but then I largely agree with them. I'm not a huge fan of "all sarcasm, all the time".

BTW, did you know "sarcasm" comes from the Greek word sarcaso, which means "to rend flesh"?

35 The neat thing about Dennis Miller is that he gets killed in almost every movie he's in. The Net, Bordello of Blood, Murder at 1600. All movies in which Dennis Miller dies horribly. There are probably more I can't remember.

The thing that I always liked about Dennis Miller is that he admits that he's a comedian, that his views are just an amusing personal take on it all and that he has no real authority to make judgements. Or, to quote directly from the man himself.

"I'm a comedian, for God's sake. Viewers shouldn't trust me. And you know what? They're hip enough to know they shouldn't trust me. I'm just doing stand-up comedy."

You get the same smugness from Bill Maher and Al Frankin, but without the sense of proportion.
