Original Post:
Question: How strenuously will McCain avoid discussing Democratic responsibility for the subprime crisis, and thus consign himself to ignoble defeat?
Why I'm Asking: Someone asks, "Didn't you watch McCain's speech yesterday?" Well, yeah. I red-fonted it. Twice.
But my worry is that he still thinks "I can't win on that issue" and offered that red meat to appease increasingly exasperated bloggers, blog-readers, and conservative news-junkies generally.
Do I know he wants to drop the issue? No. I sure hope he doesn't. But if you've been watching McCain for any length of time, you may have noticed He has difficulty admitting error and changing course.
Google Alert: Obama has packed these things with Code Pinkos and other partisans before. Everyone get ready to Google those names, and Opensecret.org their claims of being either "lifetime Republicans" or "uncommitted independents."
Oh, try to keep a record of the names and any other identifying information about these "independents," maybe entering them into the comments. Slublog will also run a lexis/nexis search on them.

While he's at it, McCain should really show his Maverick-ness and attack McCain.
Posted by: Bart at October 07, 2008 02:34 PM (wuRPB)
The better question is:
When Obama says he'll cut taxes for 95% of people, will McCain grin like a sheepish idiot (like last time) or will he mention (like he did in the speech the other day) that Obama promised that same thing when running for state senate, then promptly signed a huge tax increase instead once elected.
Posted by: lorien1973 at October 07, 2008 02:34 PM (ddGv/)
If he does go down looking, then it's his own fault. I'll still vote for him, but he needs to swing for the fences right now.

"John McCain's policies are stupid. That is why I will be a maverick and do nothing that John McCain has ever done. You want Universal Health Care? You got it! You want higher taxes for the rich? Yours! You can have everything Obama will give you..PLUS you can have it in a WHITE war hero! How much better could it be?"

If he can't pound Obambi and connect with the American people at the same time, he's got no business running for president.
Posted by: DelD at October 07, 2008 02:38 PM (hs9gk)
The big problem here is that McCain has to use a hostile press in order to get his message out, so that makes the job 1000X more difficult than it should be.

I'm betting that one of the "totally random, ordinary citizen" questioners will be a female who begins to cry as she tells the candidates that her blue-collar hubby just got downsized and now they don't have health insurance and are eating Alpo. I'm further betting that Obama will embrace her and "feel her pain" while the perfectly positioned photographers click their close-ups.
Hey, Maverick, I don't care that your legs are old and have the Viet Cong torturers stamp of approval all over them. You better be ready and get to her first.

I don't know. Is John McCain his own man, or is he Bob Dole without the broken dick?
Remember INCITEmarsh's formula for victory:
Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac + Jeremiah Wright/Bill Ayers = best way to win
FMFM - JWBA = maybe possible
JWBA - FMFM = huge loss

But: I really hate the notion that you can raise taxes on 5% of the population and cut them for everybody else. Even ignoring that the lower earning 40% pay no income taxes now, it just isn't fair. The playing field keeps getting more and more tilted. As taxes become more "progressive" the system becomes less democratic. It evolves into one class that pays ALL the taxes and receives no benefits for their money, and another class that pays NO taxes and yet can vote themselves all kinds of benefits. It sucks. Basic fairness says the poor should pay taxes, too, because we're all in this together.
God speed, McCain.

It would be pretty devastating.

I don't think he necessarily needs to attack. He needs to state the truth.
I concurr. Telling the truth is, concerning Freddie/Fannie, a damn effective attack. And it's not him "attacking" Obama, it's McCain devasatating his positions. He just needs to lay out the basics of how this all got started, and then call out Bambi on any of his bullshit.
PS: I cut my teeth in the Nashville blogosphere. I'll know pretty soon if anybody prominent from there claims to be an 'independent' or 'undecided voter.'

"Basic fairness says the poor should pay taxes, too, because we're all in this together."
"they do- sales tax, gasoline tax, etc"
If they live in a state with no income tax, they can deduct total sales tax paid from their income tax (on a return that was already going to pay back everything that was withheld and then some). The extension of this deduction was in the bailout bill because it was actually in the House tax bill already that the Senate amended the bailout onto (along with wooden arrows, etc.)

Posted by: Watcher at October 07, 2008 03:29 PM (WFjZg)
"Change", "Democrats", "Republicans", "Crisis", "Treasury", "Fannie Mae" and "Freddie Mac" are all worth 1 up'n'down. "Supreme Court" or the name of a SCOTUS Justice, the name of a current or past cabinet member, or the name of a foreign country is 2 up'n'downs. "Karl Rove" is worth 3 up'n'downs, and "Karl Rove, you magnificent bastard" means you have to finish whatever you're shooting.

Smart money is on the 'old' McCain. Soft spoken, a bridge builder, reaching across the aisle, very non-confrontational. I assume some lefty news-head will be moderating? Ok...we'll couple that with softballs thrown Obambi's way...well, fuck that, he'll hand carry the ball to Obambi's podium, and help him swing at it. McCain will get questions designed to put him on the spot/embarass him, or just make Obambi look like the second coming of Glub Almighty.
P.S. More smart money says CNN is pre-declaring Obama the winner....they've got writers working that angle right now....probably with Obama's help. Ditto for the AP, and all the rest of the Main Stream "In The Tank" Media.
P.P.S After action reportage will feature, on some channel, Bawney, "Mumbles the Gay Clown", Fwank, reminding us that McCain is a racist.
P.P.P.S Heck, even this post is racist. I'm a racist for mentioning it. You're a racist for agreeing with me...or not agreeing with me.
And lastly: I'll watch anyway...just in case someone slipped some Red Bull in McCains evening sippy-cup of warm milk.

Now if he had just made a similar everytime the Marxist tried to wrangle people's envy of CEO payrates. "So what if they make millions per year? Do you have a problem with capitalism? How do you think they got in to their CEO positions? Winning a lottery? This is capitalism at work! Each and every one of you has the opportunity to make as much money as you can in our free market based economy. This is the best country in the world to do it in! This is one of the benefits of being an American Citizen, not something to be denigrated or taxed into nothingness!"

John McCain showed everyone his very poor offering in the Primary. The Liberal Democrats, including the NY TIMES wanted Senator McCain to get the GOP Nomination for good reason.
There is little difference between the poor Candidate we see today, than during the Primary.
John McCain began to lose this election, when he grew panicked on the Economic issues, showing a failure of restraint, strength, patience, etc.
He made a fundamental mistake, believing he could run as an Independent, failing to defend the Party he Represents, including the fine aspects the GOP Leadership provided after 9-11.
Senator McCain could not even articulate the sincere reasons why we were in Iraq, or fighting the GWOT during the Primary, and hasnt improved at all.
You cannot win an election, trying to be more Global Warming than the Democrat offering. John McCain is basically running as a Moderate Democrat, and this is no way to win an election against another Democrat.
It is deeply regretful.

1) If you don't know who you're voting for by now, you're an idiot and for a presidential campaign to cater to that thought process is insane.
2) You can't out bullshit a liberal. Trying to play left of center just pulls the campaign that way in Obama's favor and given a choice between a liberal and a liberal, people pick the Democrat.
3) Conservatives don't have to lie about what they believe. Liberals do. Playing to the right forces Obama out on a whole shitload of issues he'll lose at; abortion, guns, gay marriage, higher taxes, etc.

No questions on 2nd Amendment, abortion, character, morals, etc.
McCain did OK, better than Obama, but not by much, but there just wasn't much to grab onto with the quality of the questions.
Three debates and yet no questions about abortion or gun control or SCOTUS. Does appear to be some bias in the selection of the questions.
I'd like to see the next debate where the Candidates get to ask each other questions. I literally cannot think of a single question Obama could ask McCain that would throw him, but I can think of a couple of dozen that Obama could not answer....at least truthfully and cogent.

Oh get a fucking grip. Fred was the worst campaigner in the last 50 fucking years. He did shit which is why he lost worse than even a squirrel eating idiot like Huck. He has done shit since then to help his good buddy McCain. He has done nothing. Less than any other Republican candidate. Less than Romney, less than Huck, hell, less than Rudy who ran in one state and I challenge you to prove me wrong.
Fred was something you chuckleheads made up in your minds as a candidate. He got his ass kicked in every primary he entered. He couldn't beat a Republican and he barely got off his ass. Don't start pretending he was going to wake up and run a vigorous campaign in the general if we had only realized how brilliant he was.

Posted by: Charles Krauthammer at October 07, 2008 08:28 PM (xyyHG)
I can't decide if the questions were really boring, or if both candidates' insistance upon reciting the same crap we heard at the last debate as non sequitur responses to these people just made the questions sound boring.
McCain said he'd fix Social Security, but gave no specifics. He said it would be tougher to tackle Medicare (true) but then came up with the BRAC commission as a model to deal with it? I know the guy knows a ton about these topics. I know he opposed the idiotic Medicare prescription drug expansion. I know he's very familiar with the work Bob Kerrey and Warren Rudman did trying to come up with a solution to the entitlement time bomb.
Why the fear of saying anything specific?
