Deathstar construction petition tops necessary 25,000 [Purp]
— Open Blogger

Obama will have to respond now

Seriously, what better "jobs program" could you have than a Deathstar? In less dramatic news, the Chinese are building a heavy transport akin to the C-17. Its something they'll need to support their African economic push.

Build the Deathstar!

What's wrong is the reporting.
ONE reporter noted that you don't give blood thinners for a blood clot.
You prescribe them to prevent more blood clots.

I have intimate knowledge (and 3/4 of my heart left working) as empirical evidence of this as being true.

75 Dammit. I guess we'll have to raise on the top 3 percent now and have non-union labor work 27 hours a day. That should cover it. ....... But, before you go off to start building your apocalyptic weapon, do bear in mind two things. Firstly, the two million death stars is mostly from the Earth's core which we would all really rather you didn't remove. And secondly, at today's rate of steel production (1.3 billion tonnes annually), it would take 833,315 years to produce enough steel to begin work. So once someone notices what you're up to, you have to fend them off for 800 millennia before you have a chance to fight back. In context, it takes under an hour to get the steel for HMS Illustrious. Oh, and the cost of the steel alone? At 2012 prices, about $852,000,000,000,000,000. Or roughly 13,000 times the world's GDP.**

The one good reason to have a Death Star project is it would be a good excuse to develop an asteroid mining industry. The initial cost would be high but long term it is the only practical way to get the materials on location.

Here's the thing about the thermal exhaust port. The Empire KNEW it was a weakness, it was ray-shielded (which was why the Rebels had to use proton torpedoes). So either they didn't bother to beef up the defenses any further because of arrogance, or the giant talking praying mantis bugs that designed the Death Star put the weakness in on purpose.

I've often wondered why,   on a space station the size of the Deathstar, there was only ONE     tiny    exhaust port     that was     largely unprotected.    I mean, I assume there were other exhaust ports;    probably    even other tiny exhaust ports.      But for whatever reason this   one particular port was just   too darn        boring     for anything more than   cursory   protection.

That would've given all the turbo lasers on that side of the Death Star a clean shot from afar.

By going down the corridor they limited the number of turbo lasers that could shoot at them, and then each only had a few seconds to line up a shot.

183 Dear Garbe,

Gee,  now the NBC science reporter is asking questions:

http://tinyurl.com/aw6t6d3

The top science reporter for NBC News raised questions Monday about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s hospitalization, raising the possibility the blood clot causing isn’t linked to an earlier concussion.

“It’s not exactly clear what is happening with Secretary Clinton’s health,” NBC News chief science and health correspondent Robert Bazell said.

“All we have is a statement from her office. The hospital isn’t saying anything and the statement from her [office] says that she had this blood clot that stemmed from the concussion and she’s being treated with blood-thinning drugs,” Bazell continued. “The problem is that usually when blood clots come from concussions, they can’t be treated with blood [thinners.] So either it’s not really related to the concussion and she’s got a blood clot in her leg or something, or there’s something else going on that we’re not being told. And right now, we’re just sort of seeking that clarification and hoping for the best as she’s being observed.”

The problem with dive bombing the the exhaust port is that the surface of the Death Star was covered with turbolasers which were busy shooting at the Rebel starfighters.  The angle and time needed to target the port from above may have made them sitting ducks.

As for ray shielding vs deflectors, the whole Death Star was built around defending against a large scale attack, so it's unlikely they considered proton torpedos to be a major threat.

Not true. PBS ran the Jon Pertwee stuff when it just a year or so old in the UK. Don't know about the earlier two as  would have been too young to remember. For me, Pertwee is the first Doctor, although Peter Cushing starred in those movie adapted from First Doctor arcs. That was confusing, as was the Japanese King Kong Escapes movie with a villain named Dr. Who (voiced by Paul Frees!) in the English dub. You know, the one where he fights Mecha-Kong.

I sometimes wonder if the BBC has some kind of punishment room that each of their employees must visit at some point during their employment   there.   Inside would be a running tally of how much money the Dr. Who franchise has made since its inception,   and right beside that an estimated tally of how much it COULD have made if they hadn't     incinerated    most of     the fucking film from the first two series      like     yesterday's fish wrap.      "Don't fuck it up again" would be      on a sign above the computerized tallies,   in big, red,    strobing neon letters.

And yes, I know that they had no idea how popular and long-lasting Dr. Who would be at the time.   But   STILL!

I've got most of the first two Doctors. I can tell you where to download them if you like. They can be somewhat painful to watch. The first Doctor was a bit of an asshole.

Compared to a lot of stuff from the era a surprising amount survived. There are, according to the Wiki, 106 episodes missing from the 253 in the first six years.

A lot of other shows got the same treatment. Much of the fist year of The Avengers is lost. There are some shows with no complete episodes in existence. Just the recollection of people who saw them as kids and a few scraps of film here and there.

352 Attempting to colonize the Moon would be stupid.

Nonsense.  You could put giant ads on the side facing the Earth, and it'd be a great vantage point for when Europe reverts to form and a nuclear WW3 breaks out.

353  My roommate in college told me some cool stories from the summer he spent in Scandinavia. Their attitude towards sex is, how shall I put it, very loose. On the other hand, German porn is weird. Just plain weird.

Of course. As fetishes go that is fairly mundane. It can be a real eye opener to go to one of the free porn video sites and just see all of the search terms available. It's enough to know that there is enough demand to create a category without looking.

Why? Peter Dinklage would probably be considered a hot commodity for rom-coms if he were of normal stature. He lives in the same Studio City neighborhood as Jerry Pournelle, and I've met him while walking around with Jerry and his Husky, Sable.

390 Hypothetical question. Supposing a military spacecraft from an unallied, but theoretically friendly, interstellar polity were to sustain cosmetic, but embarrassingly noteworty, hull damage. Supposing further that it was suffered at the hands of cybernetic entities that look like, but I swear totally aren't, some of my 'toasters'. What exactly, in this hypothetical, would be the appropriate manner in which to cover 'SCOAMF' scratched on the Death Star's surface? Purely hypothetical, of course.

She didn't get too upset over it, thought it was funny that he's a dirty old man
