— Ace You can read it. I can't bear.
I see now where I went wrong. This blog has always been, since day one, What White Men Fear (vagina, brown people).
If only I'd realized that the the positive sells better.

Did I mention they like dinner parties? And outdoor performance clothes? And my husband brings so many t-shirts home from everywhere he goes that he's got three drawers dedicated to them. Not just itty-bitty lingerie drawers, we're talking full-size dresser drawers.
I could keep going down the list, but you can just assume that about two out of three apply to something in my husband's life.
And just because I know by the time I actually post this comment, it will be appropriate:
<insert name here>, DIAF. Pretty Please.
I'm guessing it will be Steve, but if not, there will be some other idiot to take his place.

I found the same thing. Just not that original, insightful. The text below the entries is superfluous. It might as well be a book of postcards.

Someone issue a suicide watch alert for Ace:
The site I Can Has Cheezburger (icanhascheezburger.com), which features lolcats, photos of animals with humorous, ungrammatical captions, debuted in January 2007. Three months later, Ms. McKean contacted the founders; by last August, they had chosen her over other agents, she said. The site has 1.6 million page views a day, she said, a fact noted in the book proposal she helped prepare.
After a bidding war among several publishers, Gotham Books signed her clients. Come this November, expect the I Can Has Cheezburger book on shelves. Its going to be predominantly photos but also will enlighten readers on the key memes of lolcats, Ms. McKean said, referring to strange rules of grammar unique to the form.
Another client, Noah Scalin, the creator of the Skull-A-Day blog (skulladay.blogspot.com), has a deal for an October release, by Lark Books, of his tome that features images of the skulls he makes from candy, sparklers and other bric-a-brac.
How long has his blog been running?
Lets see, Ms. McKean said on Thursday, clicking onto the site. Hes on skull No. 298, so it started 298 days ago.

One is hard work, dedication, years of rejection, and devotion to the skill of the craft.
The other is catering to the unbelievably fickle, vapid, and shallow vaguely leftist whims of publishing company editors.

The money quote:
"Basically, this joke breaks down as "Congratulate a white person and they will feel smugly good about themselves." It's the perfect go-to punchline for Stuff White People Like, because it's really what the site is all about. Because if there's one thing white people really like, it's pretending to poke fun at themselves while actually being allowed to feel superior."
Bingo. In other words, this is clapper humor.
Posted by: Dr. Chopper at March 30, 2008 08:54 AM (xvIpv)
If anything the site makes fun of liberals. It's not just white people, but a specific set (along the lines of the San Francisco family Alice was discussing) that it focuses on most.
You mean "the right kind of white people".
The other is catering to the unbelievably fickle, vapid, and shallow vaguely leftist whims of publishing company editors
I don't know if it's catering so much as exposing.

Proper Things to Say about It:I think one of the greatest regrets of my life is that I was at the Paris flea market and there was this beautiful table/chair/painting/cup/sword, and I thought that I would find another one like it back home. Well, ten years later and I still havent found it. Quel Dommage. I don't see how, if you actually act like that, you could laugh/clap at that. But obviously what do I know. No matter how much you have offended someone from San Francisco, you can always make them feel better by asking them how they feel about Southern California. They will instantly talk of how it is filled with crime, pollution, hegemonic culture, and the wrong kind of white people: I swear California is like two separate countries, and I am so thankful that I live in the cultural center of the West Coast. This will allow them to reassert their superiority and leave the conversation with a positive feeling about themselves and about you.

Maybe because no one is actually being lampooned? Making fun of somebody's superficial behaviors and possessions is not ego-pricking.
It gives the upper class narcissistic Lib set the attention (and implicit praise) they crave, in the guise of pricking egos. It's good-natured ribbing, really. A joke about your adorable foibles, delivered with a friendly little punch to the arm. Ouchies.
If these people want to know what's really funny about themselves, they should let P.J. O'Rourke take over the site.

Wow, what next? Hot Chicks With Douchebags, the Treasury Edition? The Oliver Willis Memoirs?
Seriously, the guy who said it's like postcards is dead on. Some of the Stuff White People Like headlines are mildly amusing, but neither the actual blog text nor the universally retarded comments are worth reading.
Still, it's only $150K after taxes, right. It'll be worth even less than that once President Obama starts bringing the Change, Hope and Unity.

It took them awhile to catch on to South Park, too. They're a little slow, thinking all humor belongs to them...

I would argue it is a variety of clapper humor, Entropy. As TNR points out the attraction is much the same as say, a hipster making fun of hipsters (which trust, me, hipsters very often do). They "clap" at the humor to show they are not, in fact, the exact kind of people the blog is making fun of. Liking the blog is a kind of affectation.
Another thought I had on the subject is this: Imagine this blog was discussing the culture of the 1890s. The articles would be titled things like "A Top Hat," "Going to Church," or "Being Patriotic." Culture was much more homogeneous and earnest at that point. They would not have seen the humor in these matter-of-fact assertions. I think what makes the blog interesting to anyone is that we live in an age of irony. The attraction to it is an ironic one.
I do agree that it is making fun of the San Fran types, white or not. There are latinos, black, asians, etc. that could be just as easily described by the blog. I do think there is a politcal bent to it that the TNR writer might be somewhat loathe to accept. The redneck is a well known stereotype, but the urbane yuppie stereotype is elusive to the actual yuppie. If you are one you can't recognize it. It would be too painful.
Full disclosure: Living for a few years in the ultimate hipster locale, Williamsburg, Brooklyn has given me a sickly insight into this whole thing. I had to leave, and thank God I did. That place is a festering hole of irony.

I liked the site, but what do I know. It was probably because I have a special dislike of hipsters.
I'm not sure if it can really be called "clapper humor", at least not in the sense that the Daily Show is clapper humor; some of the jokes were well-written enough that I legitimately laughed out loud, having known the exact type of person he was describing.
I take Laura's point about the intended targets interpreting them as friendly taps on the arm that merely appear to be insults, but in the guy's defense, these people are often irony-proof. They'll like something that clearly insults them just because to do so is so fucking clever.

I like this one...
"man what a let down!!!! i thought tnr readers were way too unaware, uncool, and ugly&old for such a topic to draw any attention. i always pictured them as middle-aged volvo-driving country dwellers who'd gone a bit soft after '68 but who still made charitable donations to leftist causes. now seeing sternbergh's article and all the interaction it's drawn up is forcing me to imagine you all as tight-pants wearing H&M punkrockers who blow every paycheck on microbrew and drugs and talk about solidarity with the proletariat but actually prefer thumbing through tnr at the bio-café in williamsburg that sent the old blue-collar clientel packing..."

ACE'S Val U Rite Vodka, good till you puke it up.
I see you making campus tours promoting your vodka and have puke parties. You'll become a campus legend. Have Slub photoshope a label to stick on the bottle, your in business!

Eh, the site is funny at times (the first post I saw was on T-shirts. Which was 'funny because its true') But the premise wears thin very quick. It quickly boils down to "all white people are superficial idiots." Pretty much par for the course when comes from content from the west coast.
Besides, its certainly no Grudge Match (TM) http://www.grudge-match.com/History/index.html which is the only internet content I've ever bought in book form.

Actually three -- #3 being blackmail/extortion.
It should be obvious by now that the blog owner has some pics of the publisher getting nasty with some barnyard animals and some credit card receipts from the Enumclaw Motel 6 to back them up with. That sort of thing can land you a $300K deal for drivel pretty quick.
