The rolling printing presses and the notes counting machine were part of a montage used on Fox News, can't remember whether it was Bret Baier's program or Bill O'Reilly, I was busy with something else at the time and looked up to see it. 

It just goes to show that some media memes are now hard wired and have become cliches.  So much for the much vaunted media practioners' creativity, j-schools are worthless turning out journalist less capable than the newsrooms of old where you started at sixteen and worked your way up to an editorship.

I do not understand how all the disparate reports about job losses, more housing market woes, the start (continuation) of the commercial real estate market woes, the drops in retails sales all add up to everything is better now.

I guess they assume, and probably rightly, that most Americans are not paying attention and putting 2 and 2 together. Or, they are hoping that they can convince America, finally, that 2+2 = 5.

Details, please. Was the cameraman holding his camera on his shoulder or down at knee level? Was the For Sale sign on a lush green, well-tended lawn, or was it yellowish-green and spotty?

If it's the former for each, then the visuals convey the American dream of home ownership -- that is, you the viewer are the potential buyer. The latter mean you're the frustrated would-be seller, unable to sell your house for what little cash you might get for it but which you're desperate for.

Part of me thinks its just fine for the economic illiterates to convince themselves that all is well and jump right back into the equities markets and ignore looming inflation and dollar devaluation.  Might cause hard asset prices to fall (thinking gold) a bit and become even more profitable in the coming couple of years.

In other words, I'm trying to think of ways to profit from the 52%'ers that brought us Carter II, rather than just shake my head ruefully.  Are others thinking similar thoughts, and if so, where are the real profit centers going to be in the next couple of years, given the anti-growth and inflationary policies of this Administration?

The problem is that the government will be extending Cash 4 Home Clunkers out beyond its original expiration date, and will now include second-time buyers as well.  In other words, by this action they are showing that the housing market will act like the auto industry once the Chinese-bought debt spigot stops flowing--pulled-forward demand followed by a huge drop in sales.

Government money is the only thing preventing real estate prices from falling to their appropriate market levels right now, and thus preventing banks from being shut down and sold off like they should be.  Fortunately, as we saw last year, they can't pull this Ponzi scheme off forever, and the public will be in torch-and-pitchfork mode if banks get any more huge bailouts.  There's already a lot of rumbling about GMAC, and relatively speaking, their bailout is not nearly as high as the Big 4 or 5 recieved from TARP.

Yeah, I had the same reservations about gold.  How much higher can it really go, given that its more than doubled since 2001?

Good point--I guess owning a 65-acre spread in Idaho (with plenty of ammo stocks, of course) would be a wise investment in such a scenario.
