Coming Soon: Gas Stamps (genghis)
— Open Blog

Brought to you by none other than Baghdad Jim McDermott (D-WTF?). I must’ve done something truly horrible in a former lifetime to be sentenced to live in this guy’s district. The proposed legislation is to create a new program along the lines of the federal food stamp program. The press release and proposed bill are here.

Some highlights:

“Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, introduced legislation today to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Americans struggling to survive under crushing gasoline prices.”

“The Emergency Gasoline Assistance Act (H.R. 6561) would create a program to provide $5 billion to states as a one-time grant with the money designated to provide assistance to families of modest means to purchase gasoline. This program could provide every family that is currently living below the federal poverty threshold with $500 in assistance. State governors would have the flexibility to use the money to create programs that target the specific needs of their communities.”

1 I read the bill.  The text of that bill is a joke, right?  It would take several years before any states could ever get infrastructure in place to implement the distribution, and even then, there is nothing in it that compensates the states for the added burden of implementing this -- and dumbo's bill puts the whole of the burden of implementation onto the states.

2 We gotta get that income threshold up....say to ummmm $55k/yr.

We also got to help the "poor" buy gas efficient cars.

I can't wait!

3 Hey I just thought of something....are you gonna need to have a car or even a drivers license to get the 500 clams? Will phony drivers licenses do?Will a 120mpg moped do? A wheelchair?A airplane? A model airplane? Will Hot Wheels do?What if I have lots of cars?Do they have to run? Do I have  to buy only fuel or can I get gas, a sixpack, and cigs? Can I trade my voucher for crack?

Hurry Jim I just put the whole 500 on a horse.

Awesome. A retarded traitor is spending my money to help the "poor" again. Why don't we make sure the "poor" can have beer money, too. Why not? My wife and I are "rich". We don't pay nearly enough to subsidize the unproductive and shiftless masses. They need me to pay for gas, too. In addition to food stamps, free housing, free health care, free day care, free job training, free college, etc.

In Obamaese, "rich" means "employed".

9 ::sigh:: I live in his district. Not by choice, though. I married into it. Guess I'll be writing another letter tomorrow. They love me over there.

10 I have a job that puts me in the middle class, and yet somehow, I have less money than the poor do.

Posted by: Lincoln at July 22, 2008 08:37 PM (ExJZV)

11 Credentials first (since the libtards seem to require them): I live in one of Iowa's most rural counties. We're nearly SBA HubZone designated (the county next to us is) due to unemployment levels, and have an education level that is lower than the HubZone county. Our county is damn poor, infested with meth, and in other words, an Obama demographic dream.

That said, Jumpin' Jim's proposal disregards reality. Our population that would benefit from his proposal divides its discretionary income between two sources:

1. State Lotto Tickets
2. Cigarettes and Beer

As a risk professional, I'm often in line with Jim's proposed hand-out recipients. I cannot afford out of my budget to spend what they do on lotto tickets, smokes and beer. They spend $20-$30 per visit on a few packs of smokes, a 12-pack of beer and 3-4 tickets, while I'm buying store brands to afford the $4.69/gal diesel to get to work. They're able to live it large on the frills, while I'm cutting out any frills so I can take care of getting to work, putting my bare minimum into the 401K, paying the mortgage and the bills. My wife and I make low six-figures. Jumpin' Jim's demographic apparently makes less than $40K.

God help us from the tyranny of the poor. We can't afford their careless lifestyle of excess. Between the income redistributed to them for lifestyle choices we can't make ourselves, and our political elite which we've learned no longer pays gas taxes (while proposing to increase them on us), and we're ready to have one glorious tea party.

Forget about Atlas Shrugging... this is one pack mule ready to buck.

Posted by: redherkey at July 22, 2008 09:13 PM (kjqFg)

12 Having read the other posts here, I'd have to believe a lot of us are in the same boat. I paid more than 45% of my meager income in taxes last year, and have passed 50% when diesel taxes are factored this year. For a just-recent exec, and a wife who's a rural schoolteacher, we simply cannot afford the cost of liberalism.

I was ready to have a tea party when I read today that our liberal congresspersons aren't paying gas taxes. Our party elites, who want to tack on another dime for gas and quarter for already over-taxed diesel, are pulling up to tax-free state gas pumps.

How many times are we going to be "taken up the backside" (as Teddy Kennedy would say) before we say no more? What's the next step? I've already canceled any publication that has AP, Reuters, etc. in it to punish these bastards for enabling this parasitic mess, and am glad to see them suffering from the loss of subscribers. But something more significant is needed to hit the political parasites.

13 I used to live in his district but I relocated to the marginally better district up in lynnwood.  they are still a bunch of commies and u think the mosque down the street is an al-qaeda cell but it's better that downtown seattle.

Wow! Our great government stepping in to help us. Why don't they help us by just investing in alternate fuels so we don't have to be so dependent or foreign ones. These stamps are just going to come out of tax payer’s money anyways.

18 In the name of "fairness," will we have to give a $500.00 voucher to non-owners of vehicles, also?  I can see inner-city bus users demanding one also - and inner city mayors demanding $500.00 for every ghetto-dwelling scumbag inner city resident they represent.

One other thing: at $4.00/gallon, this is 125 gallons. That's what - 6-8 fillups for a 15 year old car?  The poor aren't driving leased cars, nor do they drive purchased 4 year old cars. They drive old beaters with (generally) terrible mileage.  Even assuming they don't trade the certs for cash, the only way this will transform anyone's life is if they trade it for cash, buy some beer, get drunk, and wreck their car.

This is not change I hope for; it is a stupid election-year stunt and nothing more.

The Dem/Libs gotta keep their power base happy - after all, they're breeding the hordes of dependant Dem voters that the libs count on to win in the future.  No give-away is too lavish, no burden on the taxpayer or expansion of unsupportable debt is too great.  I'm glad I don't & won't have kids - there's no future in this jackassery.

If it were up to me the only new subsidy the "poor" would get is free sterilization (for the females, that is).

This is not good enough.

ALL the poors gas needs to be like $1.00 a gallon. Not just $500 bucks worth. We need tiered pricing for the empoverished and the government should pay the difference.

That way I can buy $1.50 gas out of red plastic containers from the bum across the street from the station.

Posted by: Entropy at July 23, 2008 04:01 AM (m6c4H)

25 Hey! Why not try the same idea, only with schools?? We can send some coupons - "vouchers," if you will - not just to the poor but to everybody with school kids. It doesn't have to cost much since it would be taken from the money that goes to fund the public schools in the first place. The only difference is the schools would have to compete in the marketplace to get the dough. Whaddyasay, Jim?

26 The real problem would be people licking the stamps and trying to stuff them in their gas tanks.

27 Being a Democrat, Dim McJermott has no intention of actually implementing this plan. He wants saner heads(conservatives) to come out in opposition and kill it. This will allow him to paint them as heartless greedheads that don't care about the unfortunate and him as a saint. How many times have we seen this from Pelosi, Reid et al?

I drove a pickup as a choice of vehicle (until about 2 months ago), which got 14 MPG.  I came to the conclusion that if I parked the truck (it's paid for, and not worth anything to anyone but me right now), and leased a gas miser, I could pay for it with the difference in gas cost.  I leased a Honda Civic, expanded my mileage by 250%, paid $0 down, including tax, title, and license (they rolled it up into the lease), and now have a new vehicle with a warranty, and am still saving money over the previous gas costs.

Anyone can do that, if they have reasonable credit.  Of course, the demographic being targetted for this handout doesn't have the credit - they have already maxed out the high interest credit cards buying the cigs, beer, and lottery mentioned above.

I mourn for the death of personal responsibility in our country....

I am with the calls for a Boston-style tea party, except we should throw Congresscritters into a body of water rather than tea.

Can we please stop pretending these people care what we think?  This supposedly democratic republic is completely out of the hands of the people.  Those producing are being punished and those leeching are being rewarded, all so votes can be bought.  That's what welfare is: buying the public support of the poor, pandering to them, essentially letting them determine how our country is run.  These people, who produce nothing and only degrade what is built up around them by others, they are the favored class of the ruling elite.  People like us are expected to behave and ensure this system continues.  The whole situation is assinine.

I can see it now, some "poor" guy is going to pull up next to me at the gas station, and fill his Escalade up using the 'gas stamps' on his way to the grocery store to buy more meat with food stamps than I can afford.

I'm sooooooooooo glad the big government is looking out for those l'ess' fortunate than I.

This is why you can't give lefties the keys to the economy--they can't even get in the door to ECON 101, much less pass it.

41 What, its just a temporary proposal for the current crisis, its not like they'd keep it around forever...

HAHAHA, yeah right.  Nothing the Government ever proposes is temporary.  When I started paying my own bills and realized I was paying taxes for the Spanish-American War (passed in 1898, and no, I'm not that old) I learned something.

That tax wasn't intended to last 108+ years (and require 7 lawsuits to remove it)... but that's what happened.  Gas Stamps would be a new permanent proposal like anything else, and removing it would be unlikely... so not doing it in teh first place seems a better plan.

43 In the future, only the poor will be able to afford gas.  Of course, when gas is that expensive, we'll ALL be poor, because the economy will have evaporated.

The only thing we need is for Congress to stop the bullshit that's walling us off from greater supplies of our OWN oil.
