Chris Matthews: Palin Supporters White; Must Be Racism at Work

Vid at Newsbusters; I'll just quote some of the transcript.

"This is a largely white -- almost no minorities in this crowd," reported MSNBC's O'Donnell live from the scene.

Matthews reiterated, "Well, they look like a white crowd to me," later claiming, "I think there is a tribal aspect to this thing, in other words, white vs. other people."

Liberals are fond of claiming their thinking is more nuanced, more multidimensional, more wide-ranging, than conservatives' thinking.

So why is it at every opportunity they indulge in retarded reductivism and reduce everything to the single variable of racism?

People don't want to give up their health care? Must be racism.

People don't want to pay more in taxes? Must be racism.

People don't want to import millions of new needy poor which they are then obligated to support through social welfare? Must be racism.

Racism, racism, racism. There seem to be no other variables in this equation or inputs in this program.

But they are more nuanced, and can think in three dimensions, and possess better "negative capability."

27 I live in Grand Rapids.  In fact, I'm there right now.  Or here.  Whatever.  Western Michigan, Grand Rapids in particular, is strongly conservative.  And while we have minorities here, we're no Detroit or Miami.  With that in mind, if you take into account the demographics of Obama supporters, how many minorities would you really expect to see at a Palin book signing anywhere?  And then take into account the paucity of actual live minority persons who would comprise a pool from which to draw potential attendees; what do you have left?  A pretty caucasian town whose few minorities aren't even interested in seeing Palin.  The fact that Palin's Grand Rapids fan base is "monochromatic" is entirely explainable without any implications of racism.  Chris Matthews is a prevaricating douchebag.

I think it is clear that Chris Matthews stopped being sane about 2 years ago. I don't know if most of you knew of him say 10-15 years ago, but he wasn't a bad guy. He was a die hard democrat, but he was a moderate Democrat.  He was pretty fair, but would respectfully disagree with those on the right.

 

 

But something happened to him and he's gone off his rocker. Maybe the 2000 and 2004 elections, or maybe is is following directions from msnbc to be as insane and inflammatory as possible. As i have said before I don't get the MSNBC channel where I live so i don't watch his show, but i do see he is on newsbusters all the time quoted as saying the craziest sh*t.

 I just thought i would point out that the guy wasn't always this bat sh*t nuts. I honestly think that it is a schtick that MSNBC has its commentator follow.

How else do explain relatively normal people, like Dylan Ratigan, who are decent on other channels all of the sudden veer obnoxiously to the left when they his MSNBC.

 

Also Chris Matthews brother is a good conservative here in pennsylvania and lost his run for Lt gov in 2006. I guess every family has one like chris right?

Racism is a collectivist ideology, and therefore native to the left.  We on the right have no similar expression of tribalism that I know of- we subscribe to an ideology of individualism.  Therefore, I think that charges of racism have been so effective because they always catch us flat-footed; we are simply not thinking in terms of race when we do what we do and say what we say.  Therefore, this charge has inherent within it the dual-edged attack of being totally unexpected, as well as hard to refute.

That racism is a collectivist (and therefore leftist) construct however does not isolate the conservative from being a racist; but rather, that racism and conervatism are immiscible constructs which can exist in one person only through the magic of cognitive compartmentalization.  Therefore, I do not submit this to pre-emptively insulate all conservatives from charges of racism, but rather to explain how the charge has become so prevalent coming from the leftist.

Grand Rapids, MI, where Palin appeared, is demographically 70% caucasian and 20% black, with 10% being Asian or "other". And if you work the various percentages -- of the general population of book-buyers, of the people who read non-fiction, of the people who read political non-fiction, and the people who would buy a book by Sarah Palin -- you'd probably come up with a statistical likelihood that between 0% and 1% of Palin's book-buying audience was black. Which seems to be the case here.*

*If you want to attribute racist motives to anyone, you could just as easily say that the black folks were staying away due to racial prejudice. To make Chris Matthews happy, several thousand of them ought to hie themselves down to the local Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy of Palin's book, just to make things "fair" again.

Actually, there are plenty of Serbs from/in 'Bosnia'.   My spouse is Serbian, whose family origins are in Bosnia, and is a self-described 'Bosnian'. Serbian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Slovenian are 'regional roots'; there are Muslims living in Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, etc., as well as Orthodox Christians and Jews and Zoroastrians, etc., etc.  

You are correct about the whole Eastern European 'racism' vibe, but that exists everywhere - Japan is wicked racist against anyone who isn't Japanese - including Chinese and Koreans.   Western Europe and the US and Canada are overall the most 'tolerant' places on earth, to the point of being ridiculous.

Well, I wouldn't blame that on bias. I work in the media also and I can tell you we don't program our station based on customer complaints. That would be impossible and somewhat silly. We program our station based on ratings.

Then again if MSNBC pays attention to ratings, I'm surprised they haven't just turned out the lights and locked the door over there already. They're probably  sold to advertisers as part of a package deal along with other NBC networks, which is how they stay afloat.

It was filled with titles you'd expect by fellows like Henry Louis Gates Jr. These books were prominently displayed, but on the opposite side of the same aisle, shelved together under a completely different heading were titles by Thomas Sowell and another Black conservative who's name escapes me. Now, these guys are just as Black as the other writers. Their concerns are just as valid and their observations on American society just as incisive. Why aren't these books filed under Black Studies?
