Chertoff's Claim: Border to Be Completely Secure by 2011

Seems a tad optimistic to me -- and what then do we make of John "Secure the Border First" McCain's promise to seek amnesty on day one of his administration?

Even Chertoff, offering a rosy prediction, says it will take three years.

Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said tightened security on the U.S.-Mexico border has sparked increased violence there and that the border probably will not be fully secure until 2011, three years after the Bush administration leaves office.
"(Increased violence) is what typically happens when you start to enforce and make it harder to fight over the shrinking pie, so to speak, and who gets the best opportunity to exploit the additional space that's left," Chertoff said at a news conference at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Monday.
"That's a good sign," he said. "The bad news is, it's created a lot of violence and created a lot of havoc, particularly in Mexico."

"We have to recognize that both countries (U.S. and Mexico) have a common interest in securing the border," Chertoff said.

Uh-huh.

"I think we will have made a dramatic amount of progress," he said. "I think if we continue on the course we've set now we can get the border secure ... sometime in 2011."

Yeah. That's what I find so annoying about this illegal immigration issue.

The majority of Americans are unhappy with illegal immigration, and populist demonization of exploitative "big business" always goes over well (especially when, you know, it's actually true).

Going after the employers seems like a no-brainer to me. It would be very popular, while mostly side-stepping controversy over the details of the border and the treatment of illegal aliens. And even better, it would actually work.

(So of course the GOP, in typical form, isn't gonna do it.)

The problem is in how they define "secure borders". I believe, for instance, that McCain defines a secure border as one where the country has "comprehensive immigration reform" legalizing all those already here illegally and then making it much easier for others to immigrate here. Thus, there is no "legal" border problem as everyone coming in is coming in legally.

I doubt very much that they have as their definition of a "secure border" a border where everyone that comes through is checked, where we have real controls over who comes and how long they stay, etc.

Which is why McCain believes he can tell us he will "secure the borders" and still fight for comprehensive immigration reform and not believe he is lying. He thinks they are the same thing.

Even if we close the border now, that will do nothing to lower the number of illegal immigrants in the short term. What we should do instead is find alternative immigrant sources, and implement strong measures to reduce consumption of immigrants. We need an immigrant cap and trade system that forces big corporations to pay their fair share, and the big immigrant companies to give up more of their windfall immigrant profits. New exploration for immigrants is not the cure.

26 Dave, I can't agree with this. There are millions of untouched immigrants in Northern Mexico, an area bigger than New England, yet the country only needs to make a couple of thousand acres available as border crossings to tap this huge reservoir of energy. Of course the real solution is to convince GM and Exxon to make immigrant powered automobiles (flying ones?) available at a reasonable cost.
