Former world chess champion Kasparov wins backing of opposition party The Other Russia, for president.
"The Other Russia" sounds like the name of a bar in Kiev, one I'd rather not visit.
Oh, and it's the 50th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik I.

Hot Air's Bryan notes Putin has, of course, already subjected Kasparov to an investigation into his supposed "extremism" (a.k.a. dislike of Soviet KGB tyranny).
But as of yet he's been too afraid to put a bullet in his head as is his wont with journalists.

Lets hope he survives this, he really does have intelligent political views, most of which would be supported by AoSHQtm peoples.
It is likely though, that if he poses a serious challenge to Putin he'll get his pawn 'crowned' all right. Ok that's mixing chess and checkers, it's Sunday! Brain takes weekends off.

While I'd like to see Putin beaten out as President of Russia, I'm not sure a Chess champion is going to be a big improvement.
These genius guys tend to be a little near the edge.

There really isn't a good equivalent English word for "другая".
The word is sort of an amalgamation of the english words
"alternative/other/different". Doesn't really matter though, the
party has no popluar support in the country and Kasparov doesn't have a
snowballs chance in hell of winning the presidency. During their
last rally in Moscow, there were more OMON (federal police force) and
police on the streets than protestors.
Last I heard, Putin is running at about an 80%
popularity rating and whoever he gives the nod to will win, end of story.
The Russian population loves Putin for bringing stability back to the country,
and for creating a sense of prosperity and national strength, even if it is
over-exaggerated. Most people in the West just have no clue on how bad
things were in Russia during the 90's. During the last decade, things got
about as bad as they could. You had massive inflation that destroy
people's retirement options, complete disintegration of the social fabric of
society, roving gangs of youth that would do anything (seriously anything) for
a buck, the 1st and 2nd wars in Chechnya, and most importantly, a total and
complete loss in both national pride and identity.
