— Dave in Texas Arms, Oil and Gas Agreements, and the Strategic Food Shield™.
Interfax quoted an "informed military expert" as saying Venezuela planned to purchase up to 10 air defense systems, three diesel electric submarines, six more non-nuclear powered submarines and several surface vessels.Venezuela also planned to discuss the possibility of buying certain aircraft, including combat helicopters, the expert said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Chavez plans to go to southern Russia (near Chechnya) to "study its experience in solving humanitarian problems", but that's just showbiz. Hugo already knows enough about that.
They want to set up a Russian-Venezuelan bank, and join forces to tackle the food crisis, although they avoided specific details.
"We must create a food shield. While some are creating a missile shield, we want to create a hunger shield," the Venezuelan president said.
To quote Major T.J. "King" Kong, an acknowledged expert in Roosskie military affairs, "I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones."

While some are creating Hunger Shields and others are creating Missile Shields, I would like to instead propose that it is Vagina Shields we desperately need. They're everywhere, man. Game over. Game over.

"...three diesel electric submarines, six more non-nuclear powered submarines..."
Umm, the only kind of "non-nuclear" powered subs ARE "diesel electric"... how much of an expert can this "informed military expert" be?!
BTW, electric subs are scary offensive weapons.. Against our Navy, in an all out war, they wouldn't stand a chance, but against a commercial traffic, they could create a lot of havok

I agree that Chavez is dangerous. Tie this to the Russians back to stirring the pot all over the world and it does not look good.
Just remember, the Russians won the PR war for years. A hunger shield may sound corny but it does play better than a missile shield.

Breitbart July 22
The Cuban Missile Crisis Redux. Who ya gonna call? Obama to redux JFK give away technology and military stations abroad to pacify Putin's newly configured fascist Russian regime? And even if Cuba gets nixed by a tough American stance, there's always Hugo begging for attention and opportunity for bravura antiAmerica to translate into military action against the USA.
Quote: Russia would cross "a red line for the United States of America" if it were to base nuclear capable bombers in Cuba, a top US air force officer warned on Tuesday.
"If they did I think we should stand strong and indicate that is something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America," said General Norton Schwartz, nominated to be the air force's chief of staff.
He was referring to a Russian news report that said the military is thinking of flying long-range bombers to Cuba on a regular basis.
It was unclear from the report whether that would involve permanent basing of nuclear bombers in Cuba, or just use of the island as a refueling stop. /end quote
Lord have mercy! Vote McCain, the Obamarx antidote candidate.

subprime subs: against commercial traffic, they could create a lot of havok
That sort of thing worked wonders for the Germans before the Lusitania awoke Americans from pacifism (and yes, we know the Lusitania bore military supplies below the civilian passengers).
Americans preWWII also found themselves inadequately dealing with Japanese subs observing our Pacific shoreline, and German subs in our Atlantic coastal waters.
Merchant Marines worked in conjunction with our military, assigned to civilian and industrial naval commerce, no? They deserve a lot more recognition, as they were already consigned to our national defense before anything was declared, yet so many ships were sunk taking down so many.
I would imagine today that Alaska in particular would be hard pressed against either a Russian or Chinese invasion. Regardless of where an attack would occur, Americans today would suffer a rude awakening as to the reality of "give me liberty, or give me death" as Patrick Henry declared. How quickly all unity faded after 9-11 and the DNC/MSM blame of GOP Americans pre-empted pinning down the terrorist enemy.

Where to begin?
Tomahawk cruise missiles > 10 air defense systems
Seawolf class attack sub > three diesel electric submarines, six more non-nuclear powered submarines and several surface vessels
F22 Raptor > certain aircraft, including combat helicopters
Don't make me laugh.

Chavez will probably buy the same world-class Russkie air defense system that helped Syria bravely ward off the attack against their nuke installations.
The one the j00s hacked last year? Yeah, Chavez found that AA system in Russia's clearance bin.
"10 AA systems for $4.99"

At this height why they might harpoon us but they dang sure ain't gonna spot us on no radar screen!"

Maverick,
Not to nitpick, but I think the Russians and/or Chinese would be equally hard pressed to invade Alaska.
Chavez is a clown. At some point the poor folk in Venezuela will realize that he has done nothing for them and then the fun will start. Step one could have well been the massive overreach he tried earlier this year with the "make me emperor for life" referendum that went down in flames.

But it's going to be operated by the Venezuelan military. Best case is that if they train REALLY hard for about 10 years, they might be rated as high as a 4th rate military.
