1 Does anybody know why these numbers swing so much? What these poll suggest is the same people who approved of the president last month disapprove this month and may very well approve again next month. WTF?

Posted by: BrewFan at February 27, 2006 03:20 PM (0AD+O)

2 No, democratrs were not oversampled:

UNWEIGHTED WEIGHTED
Total Respondents 1018
Total Republicans 272 289
Total Democrats 409 381
Total Independents 337 348

Democrats were oversampled by ~30% compared to Republicans That's just ridiculous.

I don't know what the breakdown is in the general population, but I'll bet my left testicle that there are not 30% more D's than R's.

The media gets more brazen every day.

3 Well, if Bush's numbers keep tanking like this, he's got no chance at that third term.

4 Do I support Bush's job performance? Yes. I don't expect people to be perfect. Frankly, I don't know who he gets out of bed each morning with all the shit thrown at him day after day.

5 I'm pretty goddamned unhappy with the job the GOP has been doing this term, I'll say that. However, this in no way translates to a Democrat advantage -- it'll be a cold day in hell before I vote for a Donk again, given their record since 2001. While I believe in putting foot to Congressional ass over the Abramoff issue, I think W. has been doing the best job he can given the circumstances. I can carp about this thing or that thing, but my problem with W. is that he seems to have simply disappeared from the public stage for the last month or so -- he needs to get in front of America and calm people down. The Cheney thing, the Dubai ports issue, the Abramoff thing -- none of these things are his fault, and none of them amount to an inch of piss in and of themselves, but taken together they make him look sullen and weak.

7 Hey guys, just as an FYI-

In the newsroom where I work (forgive me for not saying where), using polls as any sort of significant lead story is expressly verboten (that's German for "forbidden", for you annoying troll types)... it's a chickenshit way of creating news out of non-news. And lest you wonder, I work in an MSM newsroom.

Polls are notoriously inaccurate and usually leading, even when they come from my beloved Wall Street Journal.

So there (or something).

10 Bill Clinton's job approval rating at the end of his term, 65%. How did that work out for the demos?

Frankly, I'm a lot more unhappy with the GOP voters than I am with Bush. As a politician and speech maker Bush is average at best. As a leader with firm resolve who has delivered a real legacy, a Supreme Court that will be felt for a generation, the first president in my life time who has had that nuts to actually take on Islamic fundamentalism, an economy that if not spectacular is very solid, growing and not built on a false VC backed myth and a leader who cares more about actually doing right for the country more than his legacy, Bush has delivered.

Sure there have been mistakes. We elected a president not a god. Just don't go wobbly George.

Posted by: JackStraw at February 27, 2006 04:05 PM (rnOZq)

11 I don't think we should let one decision or one issue dictate how a president ought to be rated. Polls seem to be indicative of what some people think about him at the current moment rather than reflecting what people think how he did since he was first sworn in.

59 Maybe I'm just glum, but if you were polled as to whether you support the President's job peformance, would you say you did?

Overall performance? Yes. Just talking about border security? No.

Incidentally there could be a silver lining but it would take some balls and some vision - DP World or whatever their name is has been found to be participating in boycotts I believe of Danish and/or Israeli products and services, which I believe is illegal under US law - make them publicly, formally renounce these and all future such boycotts that are not in line with US policy, and then let them have their paper ownership.

Bush gets his way, while saying "this deal has allowed us to drive a wedge in the former unanimity of muslim embargoes - see, diplomacy gets results". Guarantee you his approval would ratchet up at least 10-15% on that alone (more on an evenly sampled polling population).

Posted by: Scott at February 28, 2006 05:29 AM (f8958)

60 That's some wishful thinking there Scott. The reason that they won't do what your asking is that they are a "state-owned firm". It's one thing to ask them for a sham delay, it's a whole nother thing to ask for them to start partnering up with Isreal. Bush will sit down for tea with Kim Jung-Il before that happens.

Secondly, Bush approval isn't going anywhere. I know that the hardcore Republicans represented in these comments will go down with the Bush ship, but most moderates in this country see the error of our thinking on Bush.

62 Hey...don't forget:

MIKE'S been telling you this guy was an idiot for quite some time, and it appears the public is finally catching up.

Isn't it time you dolts yank your heads out of Bush's ass, too?

1.President Bush's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 34 percent.

2.Pessimism about the Iraq war has risen to a new high.

3.Americans are also overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush-backed deal giving a Dubai-owned company operational control over six major U.S. ports.

4.The Coast Guard had concerns about the ports deal, a disclosure that is no doubt troubling to a president who assured Americans there was no security risk from the deal.

5.In a separate poll, two out of three Americans said they do not think President Bush has responded adequately to the needs of Katrina victims.

6.Mr. Bush's overall job rating has fallen to 34 percent, down from 42 percent last month.

7.Fifty-nine percent disapprove of the job the president is doing.

8.Most Americans say the president does not care much about people like themselves. Fifty-one percent now think he doesn't care, compared to 47 percent last fall.

9.Just 30 percent approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the Iraq war, another all-time low.

10.By two to one, the poll finds Americans think U.S. efforts to bring stability to Iraq are going badly – the worst assessment yet of progress in Iraq.

11.Half of Americans say they disapprove of how he's handling the war on terror, while 43 percent approve.
