Caustic Bleach Thrown on Connecticut Delegates
— Ace

We're all thinking the same thing.

Let's not say it.

Let's just let it remain unsaid.

1 Some of them got sprayed in the face with tear gas, too. Watch the video.

By in large, I think the police showed too much restraint.

11 Sorry, but when it moves beyond honest - if pathetic - protesting at a party convention and into the realm of intentional infliction of physical harm, then it should be treated as an assassination attempt, with heavy and immediate physical force used to protect the delegates, up to and including shooting to kill. Period.

Posted by: RajivVindaloo at September 01, 2008 09:32 PM (VesB0)

12 That's second amendment for you, right there. Somebody comes toward you with a $10 garden sprayer loaded with $2 of bleach and who-knows-how much water and sprays you. You feel the spray, smell the bleach -- do you (a) quietly submit to being sprayed with more and more? (b) call the police, and submit to being sprayed until they get there? or (c) pull your lawfully carried handgun, incapacitate the SOB, and self-evacuate to the nearest medical facility?

If your answer depends on the concentration of bleach, explain how you'd evaluate this while your face was melting.

Were I on a jury where a group of 20 people approached a single person and one of them sprayed the victim with a mixture no more toxic than swimming pool water, with the result the "victim" pulled a concealed handgun and double-tapped each attacker in the head, I would be leaning heavily toward "self defense, or proper defense of others."

Use of a terror weapon -- an asymmetric weapon such as bleach spray or sandbags off an overpass -- is beyond the pale. There should be no penalty for deadly response to such actions.

13 Going to be interesting to see if right leaning journalists let their left leaning counter parts cover this up or excuse for it as well.

15 Someone,
We'll see in the morning.  Question, when does some right leaning journalist finally resign from the NYT and the WaPo when they refuse to cover stuff like this or lie about it in their coverage?

Posted by: The Obvious at September 01, 2008 09:38 PM (1g+FW)

16 cthulu, I'm imagining they aren't letting people take personal firearms this close to the convention (And if they did, we might be hearing about actual assasinations).

But when they tell me I can't bring a gun, they had better damn well take responsibility for what happened.  That these people were harmed is St Paul's fault too.  I agree that shooting violent protesters is, at least in some cases, acceptable.  It's necessary to protect the convention, and there are clearly psychopaths trying to harm good folks.  These people are attacking this convention because they know they are safe to do so.  Same reason people shoot up schools and malls.  They aren't brave enough to get on a battlefield for their beliefs, so if these protesters were currently dead for their attacks, I think we wouldn't have any more injured innocents.

Pretty grotesque argument and totally unrealistic in our culture at this point.

20 Don't worry, the protestors will claim it was performance art, and the Minneapolis DFL machine will not only release all of them, but give them a public grant to refine their oeuvre for the benefit of civil society and social justice. Me, I prefer showing them the muzzle flash of a sawed-off Mossberg, point-blank. That's my kind of performance art.

25 When does the lying stop? When do he journalists that claim to be regular folk do what regular folk do and tell the truth? It doesn't stop. But its influence changes slowly, as people abandon the fraudulent "objectivity" of mainstream journalism and look to alternate sources, such as Michael Totten with respect to the Mideast. What we see in mainstream journalism is the slow death of horse-and-buggy manufacturers in an age where automobiles are ascendant. The two have nearly nothing in common.

26 I feel bad for the cops.  This is the type of police force that liberals have dreamnt about for 40 years.  Overly cautious, afraid of lawsuits and risk averse, and forced to let liberal cock suckers like these guys get away with this garbage.  Every confrontation will be blamed on law enforcement by the deciders and ACLU, Harvard, Yale and Georgetown lawyers will gladly defend any of the poor "victims" of police brutality.  Its time we find some real life Eric Cartmans to take care of bidness with these loser hippies.

27 Just as with the WTO demonstrations here in Seattle and every other thing these idiots do, they will be released and not charged. They will file suit with pro bono lawyers and make money. The media will cover it up. And really, since these things always happen in Dem controlled inner cities, the mayors and city council members all think it's only what Republicans deserve. I'm so flippin' sick of this shit. These are a bunch of young punks that would be afraid to stand up to people willing and able to defend themselves. Unfortunately, anyone that defends themselves vs these thugs will likely spend more time in jail than the thugs would. There is simply no down side to being a young radical in these times. 20 years from now they'll be English professors(ayers), debate instructors (that idiot butt flasher from the video a few weeks ago) and sociology professors. As happy as I am over Palin, I despair that we can correct the disfunction brewing on our left wing.

28 We need to get this on YouTube, for starters.  If we can't show it to the public, it might as well have never happened.

Then we need McCain and Obama both calling for stepped up police enforcement.

If Obama merely expresses sadness that violence took place, then he's really endorsing it.

If he's really opposed to the violence, he will call for a police crackdown.

68, actually led to a grotesque division within the Dem' party.   '68 was the catalyst that led to the ultra-left taking over the dem party.

'68 destoryed the dem's, not just in the election, but in general, completely changed the classical identity of the Dem's, allowing the 'pubs to regain prominence, even during a relatively weak year.

Posted by: wickedpinto at September 01, 2008 10:52 PM (ul7te)

32 Well, of course theres a lot of other shit, but, '68 succeeded in fracturing the Dem's, not empowering the 'pubs.

Posted by: someone at September 01, 2008 11:21 PM (2z2WN)

35 Well, since I am not among the "we" and "us" to whom your comments not to comment are aimed, I will say it.

People who feel motivated, even "inspired", by that big fat race-baiting base tool Rush Limbaugh and the ditto-headed dodo birds who don't understand that he is simply serving an agenda, who then decide to travel to Denver in hopes of watching or even participating in a soccer hooligan-like melee with those they call Servants of the Antichrist, who upon finding that all the Democrats are too busy with their convention to give them any more than wary eyes & wide berths, yet go on to push and push at every passing stranger until someone pushes back, are just tools.

But those who make up stories like this are worse than tools- they are Republicans.

On the other hand, we didn't hear or read even a single report of an accredited political news organization anywhere in Denver at any time during the DNC, left or right, being hassled, roughed up, bloodied, illegally arrested, detained, manhandled from the scene and paraded before a desk sergeant on trumped up generic charges, jail or being compelled to post prohibitively high bail to get released. That didn't happen even once in Denver- but it didn't happen once in St Paul either: it happened, is continuing to happen, and can be expected to happen, time after time in St Paul.

So-called law enforcement forces acting under a Republican state governor & a Republican federal administration to do these things are also worse than tools also- they are brownshirts.

This election starts a cycle of 8 or more years during which tools, morons, Republicans and brownshirts are going to "own" the consequences of their actions.

Count on it.

Except none of that shit happened, you fucking imbecile.  There weren't any incidents of "right-wing" violence against the attendees of your shittly little convention.  What's happening now, just as it happened in 2004 and just as it will happen in perpetuity until some of your fellow travelers get the lead in their chests that they so richly deserve, is left-wing mutants attacking attendees to the Republican convention.

Only one ideology is personified by its appeals to violence against The Other as a sacred duty, and it isn't ours, asshole.

You need to get out more, dumbfuck.  A local reporter was assaulted and detained by the Denver cops because he had the temerity to stand on a public sidewalk and take pictures of the deep-pocketed syphilitic sleazebags that write the biggest checks to your party.

Miss that somehow, retard?  Of course, you didn't "hear" about it because the Obama spirit squad members you count on for "news" collectively spiked the story.  The One's shady glad-handing must not be exposed, no matter the cost.

But those who make up stories like this are worse than tools- they are Republicans.

Of course, DD.  Your pathological need to pretend that Republicans are brownshirts that are simply inventing these stories and feeding them to a bizarro Pravda simply trumps the dozens of eyewitness accounts and police reports that refute your delusions.  Time to take your meds again, sugartits.

42 Earlier this summer, I signed my teenager up for a youth leadership program centered around the RNC convention. There was a DNC option, too; it's non-partisan program. We reluctantly cancelled, though, because my son was worried about missing too much school. Well, now I'm really glad we did cancel. There's attempted murder happening on the streets, and cub scouts and old folks are fair game. My son would've been in real danger if he'd gone, and I'd be a basketcase worrying about him. This is what's evil: One of my son's friends attended the Dem convention youth program and had no problems. It was lots of fun, and she learned a lot. In contrast, the Republican kids in St Paul are having to live in fear. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to restrict some of their activities because of the thuggery. This is evil, and it's un-American.

One more reason that taking self defense is a good idea. In a no gun zone, like the convention, I think the average hippy protestor/attacker would be suprised to find out there are 4 types of pressure points that can make you wish you were dead and that you know how to make all 4 types sing like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

44 HuffPo has a video of lefty journo Amy Goodman being roughed up and arrested. The cops are roughing up middle-aged female journos, but letting some of these other bastards get away with assault. This is wrong of me, but I kind of enjoyed seeing Goodman get roughed up. She may be innocent, but the people committing these crimes are her fans.

46 If it bleeds, it leads.
If there's fire, run it higher.
More than twenty years in television has taught me those two simple truths when it come to the news.
Whether protesters run amok, or are met with baton rounds and mounted police, if the pictures are good, no news producer worth their salary will not use them.
It's cynical and callous, I know, but if the militant wing of the Hope & Change  Party did riot unfettered, there's only one candidate who would have to explain coast to coast and forever, the violence perpetrated on his behalf.

I know that we want to avoid becoming a "regional" party (though God knows that it seems that voting patterns for various regions seem pretty set at this point), but $hit like this only makes me think that we shouldn't hold any more conventions outside the South or maybe a few other places like Arizona.or Utah. "Protests" like this seem a lot more subdued in places where there is the prospect of doing real time in jail for thuggery and where anarchist douchebags face the real prospect of going up against cops and national guardsmen who don't mind mixing it up.
