Bud Day...Yeah, I Heard McCain Tell The Cross In The Dirt Story In 1970/71
— DrewM

Col. Bud Day is a former POW and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. If you haven't heard of him take a few minutes to look him up. You remember all those "Cool Facts About Chuck Norris" jokes? Well, if you insert Bud Day's name in them, they aren't funny because they don't do justice to how tough and dedicated to the defense of our country the guy is.

John Miller of National Review Online talked to Col. Day and asked him about the story.

So I asked: When was the first time you heard McCain tell this story? His response: "I heard that story in 1970, 1971—back in that time frame. Anybody who says it's not true is full of..." Here he used some salty language.

Since this is Ace of Spades and not NRO I'll take a shot at filling in the missing word...shit. He's absolutely right, they are full of shit and blinding adoration for Obama but mostly...well actually my guess is the shit and adoration are equally mixed.

I debated whether this was a post or a headline but I think it's worth a post simply because assholes, like 2nd rate Kos diarist Andrew Sullivan, shouldn't have the loudest megaphones in this dust up.

I look forward to the appologies that are sure to flow from the leftards who were only 'asking questions'.

How long before the left accuses Bud Day of being a commie double agent, wife beater, child molester, and hobo killer?

Posted by: EC at August 21, 2008 06:38 AM (mAhn3)

2 Oh no, you see, Bud Day supported the Swift Boat vets - ergo, he is the enemy of all hope and change. Sure, he got some medals or something, but this is hope and change he could be interfering with. There's no need to respect some old guy who would dare oppose them.

Bud Day--Actual real live American hero just like John McCain.

In the other corner, excitable Andy, Barack Obama and William Ayers.

Satire is not supposed to write itself.

4 ...ah, but oft' times in our post-millenial political age satire does, indeed, write itself. And quite nicely, too.

There is no better illustration of how screwed up the moral judgement of the nation has become than, the fact that the O-gang has any chance in this election and has earned the D nomination.

6 Well, looks like it's appy-polly-logies all 'round - either that, or start calling a CMH winner a bald-faced liar.

Any bets?

For fuck's sake, Christians have been scrawling either the cross or the sign of the fish into the dirt to identify one another since ancient Roman times.  Yes, I'm sure Sohlzinetsyn's story and McCain's story are both true.

Sullivan's a douche.

And you think it's "shit"? Since when is shit "salty"?

I think he said full of the devil's own spooge dripping out their asses.

See, much more salty, and the sort of thing they aren't going to print at NRO.

Just my guess, but I think I'm pretty close on this one.

17 Day's book, Return with Honor, is out of print, but it's a great book. Definitely not for the squeamish, though. I have no idea how so many of our guys survived under those conditions. I have some relatives who know Col Day, and they say he's a great guy, besides having one of the most admirable service records in modern US history. None of which makes a good goddam to the hysterical nitwits who support The One.

19 BTW, ol' Sully's idea of "scratching in the dirt" was illegal in a lot of States until relatively recently.

20 I read Col. Day's brief bio.  Obama and his followers aren't qualified to hold this man's jockstrap.

23 Yeah, but John McCain owns 7 houses, is old, and doesnt understand the economy

Not only that, but his wife Cindy was once addicted to prescription drugs. Don't ever leave out this all-important fact.

24 In the Marine Corps I was taught that, when circumstances permit it, I was to stand and salute officers.  Any officer rated a salute, whether in charge of me or just some confused but confident second Lou fresh out of ROTC.  He holds an office deserving of respect. The salute is returned, or the officer gets to explain why his sorry self doesn't respect his own office, then and there.

Officers salute officers of higher rank, in the same manner.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff salutes the Commander in Chief, President of the United States (even if he's a dirtbag who doesn't know the proper use of a cigar).  He holds an office deserving of respect.

When a Medal of Honor winner enters the room, which usually only happens at the man's funeral, the President salutes him.

Medal of Honor winners look up to Bud Day.

Loren Heal,

You aren't kidding about that. I just put up a headline about the passing the Capt. Ed "Too Tall" Freeman and while surfing around reading up on him I came across this...

Freeman was back at the White House a few months later for the premiere of We Were Soldiers, a 2002 feature film that depicted his role in the Ia Drang battle. As he was filing out of the small White House theater, the president approached him, saluted, and shook his hand. “Good job, Too Tall,” he said.

Off topic, it's really sad that the MOH is becoming essentially a posthumous award. Not only are there living individuals from Iraq and Afghanistan who deserve it, the military and the country need these living examples of heroism.

Posted by: DrewM. at August 21, 2008 12:02 PM (hlYel)

26 Right you are Drew M. Unfortunately, it's pretty much always been a posthumous award . Dave Bellavia rates one IMHO.

I believe if memory serves that the children of MOH recipients can get an automatic appointment to the service academies . It's one of the few perks of the medal.

One of my dads old Sarn't majors said you usually had to be dead to get it. This from a man with the DSC and seven , yes seven, different wounds in WW11.

I disagree.  All the dirt on Obama was either not known or kept from the Democrat rank-and-file until after Super Tuesday.  By the time people figured out what he's really about it was too late to reverse course.

This is less a reflection on moral judgement than it is on a stupid primary system that ends the race (for all intents and purposes) while the voters are still in the infatuation stage.  There's no doubt in my mind even Democrats would have passed on Obama had they known then what they know now.

What this all really means is the Democrats have again managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

28 I watched liberals defend Ayers and Obama on H&C on Fox. There is no low liberals won't stoop to. It's just a matter of minutes until they attempt to run Bud Day into the ground.
