Brownback May Have, Or May Not Have, Referred To Gays As "Fruits"

Referring to gay marriage in Sweden, he quoted Matthew "Ye shall know them by their fruits." The Rolling Stone reporter interviewing him thought he was making a joke; he says he wasn't, just quoting the Bible.

"Fruits." That's such an old-school put-down it's practically new-school.

I like how put-downs go in cycles. "Hump" and "tool" were old; then they kind of became cool again, just because no one was saying them. (Except for 60 year old alkies at the BPOE, but who listens to them.)

"Douchebag" seems very played. "Jagoff" seems like it's ready to come back into style. Ten years ago, you couldn't give jagoff put-downs away. Now maybe they're priced right for a big gain.

These are the things I notice.

3 Actually, "Jagoff" is indeed back in style again, but I don't rightly know how it was originally used.

Nowadays it is used in the "fuck off" type of verbiage when someone doesn't want to curse.

How was it used back in the olden times?

5 Yeah, I just started hearing "jagoff" in the late nineties or so. I am not familiar with the etymology there. I always thought it was just a euphemism for "jack off", which is odd, you know , calling someone a verb, and an intransitive one at that.

6 Pretty sure I recall hearing "quit jacking off" which transmogrified into "you jackoff" in the 70s. In both cases it referred to one who was not with the program.

'Choad' is in the same category as 'grogan', always popular with an underground crowd, but unlikely to make a breakout.
