Bill Richardson Withdraws From Appointment To Be Commerce Secretary
— DrewM

Hope, Change and Corruption!

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, tapped in December by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position, citing a pending investigation into a company that has done business with his state.

"Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact," he said Sunday in a report by NBC News. "But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process."

He's staying on as Governor of New Mexico, which is apparently a non-partisan position since the fact that Richardson is a Democrat isn't mentioned in the story.

Richardson is under investigation in a 'pay to play scheme' (sound familiar?) involving a company that received a state contract after making a contribution to Richardson's political action committee.

I never got why Richardson even wanted to be Commerce Secretary. I mean, he's been in charge of a second tier department (Energy) and been UN Ambassador. It seems being Governor in a cool place like New Mexico would be better. He must love the DC social life. Oh well Bill...no cocktail parties for you.

You know, an awful lot of Democrats are involved in some shady deals. Perhaps we could tie these things together and give them a slogan. Maybe something like 'culture of corruption'. Nah, that's just crazy talk.

In related news, popcorn futures have skyrocketed.

2 I guess with Jindal in Louisiana, somebody had to pick up the slack for corrupt Democratic state officials. Illinois can't carry that whole burden themselves.

Not that MSNBC would want to mention, but the "company that has done business with [Richardson's] state" did similar work for Jefferson County (search for "largest municipal bankruptcy in US history").  From Bloomberg: "Beverly Hills, California-based CDR Financial Products Inc., received almost $1.5 million in fees from the New Mexico Finance Authority in 2004 after donating $100,000 to Richardson’s efforts to register Hispanic and American Indian voters and pay for expenses at the Democratic National Convention in 2004".

5 Frequently unmentioned in  General Santa Ana Richardson's resume was his intervention in the Monica Lewinsky blowjob scandal when he knowingly and willingly attempted to place the well reasoned and apparently talented thong popper in the employ of the United Nations.  What was her title?  Head mistress?

7 Stupid question time - am I remembering incorrectly that Bill Richardson ran for president last election cycle?  And none of this came up during the elections?  Was the MSM just unable to find anything about this? Was it that well hidden?

10 What a great guy?  Bill Richardson has magnaminously withdrawn his name as Commerce Secretary for the O'Bambi Administration, the same way he withdrew his name as a first-round draft pick for the Kansas City A's in 1966.  This is truly an honorable man?

21 I expect there will be pressure on Rahm to go next.  Big O needs to scrub the roster before 1/20 lest any residual grime follows him  into office.  He'l have a tough enough time as it is - this Blago saga will get bigger (Reid wasn't on MTP this AM for no reason) and I'd bet that the dirt will get deeper.  At some point the MSM will start covering this stuff for viewership - Clinton was a boon for the media; Big O won't be any different.

22 Bill Richardson was just someone I appointed to my cabinet. I had no idea who he was.

Posted by: Barak Obama at January 04, 2009 09:04 AM (iafWn)

23 I bet the majority of O!'s moderate looking cabinet appointments never make it to the confirmation hearings. My bets are Treasury (as a payoff to Paulson - hey, Summers just can't railroad the bailouts like the Big P, and we need continuity in our monetary policy! Save our Paulson!) and HHS (because Blago wanted that to go to a union-approved guy as part of his payment, though Daschle may quality). And State. I've thought from the get-go that appointing Hillary to State was one giant head-fake to make her look bad, like Lucy and the football. There are already headlines on Drudge about investigations in to Hillary similar to the ones for Richardson. By the time the Change comes, it will be hard to the left and somewhat angry.

Of course, I could be over-theorizing, like when I'm reading a mystery and I always start suspecting 18 different people of being the murder with really great intricate motives, and then it's really the chambermaid or something. Like that.

I never got why Richardson even wanted to be Commerce Secretary.

Oh that's an easy one.  The Commerce Department is the Mother Of All Corruption Opportunities.  Think about it: as Commerce Secretary your job mainly is to promote American business.  There's quite a few companies who would like to see their business promoted just a tad bit more aggressively than the other guys'.  And the Commerce Secretary is more than happy to oblige under the 'right set of circumstances'.  Plus you get the inside scoop on all sorts of American industries.  You'd be a hot commodity as a lobbyist once your tenure as Commerce Secretary is over.  Plus, your name basically stays out of the press unless you do something really stupid so you don't suffer the same scrutiny as many of the other cabinet secretaries.  In short, Commerce is a sure path to riches.

56 If I remember right CDR was being investigated for corruption in another state and the investigation stumbled upon the NM links to Richardson and the kick-backs. This came out months ago but they must have come across some goodies or else Richardson would never have withdrawn. He wanted to go back to D.C. for a long time - he even ditched Hillary in favor of Obama early in the campaign in hopes that Obama would pay him back (and he did with the cabinet position). Richardson is now running back to the banana republic of NM in hopes he can keep his political career alive. More popcorn please.

58 It's so much easier to deal with legal issues when you have a state police force, the National Guard and a bevy of state paid attorneys at your disposal.  Plus a governor's salary, staff and living expenses.

61 As Commerce Sec'y, BR would have overseen the SPP.gov; check that site out and search for much more information on that. He would have been able to keep Bush's legacy of collaborating with Mexico alive.

There are two other issues about BR that you won't hear from almost anyone else: one of his questionable quotes, and the fact that even as he was running for president he was shilling for a pan national group. Details at my name's link.

It would be nice if others could have pushed those any time during the past year or two rather than having to wait for things like this.

74 Meanwhile, from over at Rightwingnews: And from the IHT, word on a possible quid pro quo scandal involving Obama's nominee for Sec. of State Hillary Clinton: WASHINGTON: A developer in New York state donated $100,000 to former President Bill Clinton's foundation in November 2004, around the same time that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure millions of dollars in federal assistance for the businessman's mall project. Hillary Clinton helped enact legislation allowing the developer, Robert Congel, to use tax-exempt bonds to help finance the construction of the Destiny USA entertainment and shopping complex, an expansion of the Carousel Center in Syracuse. She also helped secure a provision in a highway bill that set aside $5 million for Destiny USA roadway construction. The bill with the tax-free bonds provision became law in October 2004, weeks before the donation, and the highway bill with the set-aside became law in August 2005, about nine months after the donation. Congel and Philippe Reines, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton, both said there was no connection between his donation and her legislative work on his project's behalf. Reines said the senator had supported the expansion of Carousel mall "purely as part of her unwavering commitment to improving upstate New York's struggling economy, and nothing more." WOW! So that is actually TWO scandals in ONE PRE-INAUGURATION WEEKEND for Obama! I'm in awe of Obama... he may really BE "The One!"
