Barracuda Bite: Mass Cancellations of Subscriptions to Obama Celebrity Magazine Us Weekly
— Ace

Sarah Palin: Chickens

Us Magazine: Roost

Jann Wenner, a no-talent ass-clown best known for running bong ads in a magazine featuring interviews with barely coherent sub-morons finds his second-rate People magazine (think on that) in even more trouble.

“I’m hearing it’s 5,000, maybe more,” says one well-placed source in the industry. Another source claimed that as many as 10,000 readers have already cancelled their subscriptions. A spokesperson for Wenner Media, which publishes Us, says “it is completely false that we are losing 10,000 subscribers.” As for the 5,000 estimate, the spokesperson only said “that is false, too,” but wouldn’t comment further.

The magazine was mailed out Monday, and will not be received by many until Friday or Saturday. So many of these cancellations come from those who haven't even received the magazines yet. They know what the story is.

“When Us went to print Monday night, it looked like the ticket was falling apart," says one magazine editor. “They went to print thinking Palin was dead in the water, and their mistake was thinking everyone who reads Us is a Democrat, when they’re not. Readers are loyal, but the base of a political party is more loyal. They don’t need to read the magazine when there’s so much press around it to know to be upset.”

Upset might be an understatement: One Us advertiser has admitted that they’ve received calls from angry former subscribers threatening to boycott their products. “(Us publisher) Jann Wenner supports Obama, Wenner media decided to follow the buzz around Palin before her speech, and now subscribers feel like a vote has been cast on their behalf," says another magazine editor. “It’s going to be tough to bounce back from this one. Especially if the advertisers get involved. If they get nervous, that can hurt all of us.”

Awww, that sucks.

Gee, I guess now we know why Us Magazine sent out its nitwit writer to go out there and claim she was voting for McCain, huh? And that the article must therefore not be the product of bias, because, of course, a staff writer has full freedom to write whatever cover story she likes irrespective of the editor's and pubisher's demands.

Damage control.

"Hey, I'm one of you, really. I'm a big fan of Palin's, that's why I smeared her!"

KTHNXBAI.

Note they trotted her out to make this claim just hours before news of the mass cancellations hit.

Thanks to Rob.

By the way, my girlfriend -- and I don't know why I always hide this stuff; I just don't think it's appropriate, but it gets cumbersome to keep saying "this other person I was talking with" -- anyway, my girlfriend picked up the issue.

After two pages of ads, you know what it features?

A two-page spread on how chic (their word) Michelle Obama is. Lots off glamor shots of her with her daughters and husband -- See! Look! Here's a solid marriage, as opposed to that dysfunctional white-trash train-wreck on the cover!

GF: "Gee, what are they trying to tell me here?"

Some sample text for your enjoyment. Quotes are quoted in the magazine, coming from designers and fashionistas, but of course reflect the editorial opinion of Jann Wenner.

Michelle's Campaign Style

Mrs. Obama kept it simple and chic...

"Her style can best be described as timeless"...

"Mrs. Obama possesses a natural and unpretentious sophistication...."

Michelle has "the grace and beauty of a dancer..."

Yes, and the forehead ridges of a Klingon bat'leth warrior.

And, of course, Governor Palin takes a bad picture once in a blue moon. Us Weekly just happened to find one to slap on its cover making her look a bit like a vampiric Barbra Streisand. And now that the left is absolutely terrified of her, what a shock, every other picture of her is a bad one.

Jann Wenner should stick to what he knows, and just keep paying college students to claim that Bjork's new album is "Five Stars -- Brilliant" even though no one believes them or cares, actually, either way.

That, or he should pursue his true area of expertise and begin publishing Bisexual Douchebag Star-Fucker Quarterly.

Obama's Fingerprints Are All Over It: The publisher? Huge Obama supporter. The executive that sent out "helpful" emails that this wonderful article might "guide" us through the Palin news? A former Clinton White House operative. His Florida chairman and MoveOn.org, which of course endorsed him, are furiously emailing libelous claims insinuating that Palin is a Nazi sympathizer.

And yet Obama says he doesn't want any of this sort of attack on Palin's family, and that he practices a new, better politics generally.

So how come the Idiot Messiah's cultists don't listen?

If Obama presumes to lead a nation, shouldn't he be able to lead his most loyal followers first and foremost?

BTW, the Idiot Messiah has thusfar refused to release his college transcripts to the public. I guess I'm supposed to assume his grades were so scary-high I'd be threatened by his incandescent brilliance.

No sale, dummy. And it's astonishing that after the Daily Kos Media has made college grades and SAT scores such an important matter in presidential politics in recent years, they don't even bother to ask the Idiot Messiah for his.

Power Glutes: Defending his viciously insane Trig Trutherism:

Because Palin is a total unknown and because her past is so colorful, to say the least, and because there are only two months before the election, the media has jumped all over it. That's our job. They have compressed in five or six days what was raised about Obama over twelve months. Of course it seems tougher right now. But I don't believe it is. If Obama's family were as colorful as Palin's, you can bet the press would have been all over it.

Um, what's "colorful, to say the least" about her life?

Do you consider heterosexual procreative sex that exotic? Are you that provinicial?

The "colorful" aspect of her life, I imagine, is the pregnancy she faked while her daughter carried her grandson Trig to term, and then took that baby on as her own.

That's what this brain-deteriorated X-dosing freak is referring to. As previous emails indicated, he still believed in the viability of this grotesque baby-swapping conspiracy as of yesterday.

And this steroid-addled lunatic fancies himself an expert on what constitutes a "colorful" life.

And the once-respectable Atlantic magazine keeps this gibbering left-wing Bircher on the payroll because, um, I have no idea. I guess because like many they've bought into Andrew Sullivan not for his talent (rather modest) but for his exotic self-invented identity of "Gay Catholic Conservative Contrarian."

Well, he's not Cathoic anymore, by his own proclamation, he's not conservative, despite his increasingly laughable (and increasingly insulting) claims to the contrary, and he's hardly contrarian, given that half of his writings are standard-issue liberal pap of the sort one could find at DKos or other hyperpartisan leftist sites (indeed, that's where he finds this pap in the first place) and the other half consists of conspiracy theories of such exquisitely baroque derangement that even Hermann Goering's cheeks would blush in embarrassment.

Contrarian? Or simply crank?

And, of course, he finds even those bizarre fantasias on left-wing websites, too. He's not even an imaginative self-starter of a conspiracy loon.

Oh, and increasingly, he's given to expressing that sort of casually thoughtless form of plummy anti-Semitism that only educated Britons still seem to believe is charming.

So what's left?

He's gay.

And that's it. Anything else I'm missing?

Frankly, if you want a gay hyperpartisan reflexive brain-dead liberal with dubious skills and declining psychological stability, why not just cut out the middleman and hire one of the anonymous diarists on Daily Kos to do write for the Atlantic?

Why pay Andrew Sullivan a salary when a finder's fee would suffice?

And why not pay a good, solid American to provide this sort of deranged gutter-running for you? Based on what I can see, there are tens of thousands of writers of Sullivan's dubious quality and limited appeal, born and bred right here in the USA (alas).

"Colorful:" I just remembered why that word was sticking in my head.

It's because it's the word Sullivan used to wink-wink call Fred Thompson a queer (yet another salacious, unsourced rumor he found on far-left web-site's comments sections and immediately trotted out, without the most basic attempts at fact-checking or comment-seeking in The Atlantic magazine).

Remember?

Outside the extremist, activist base, regular GOP voters turn out to be relatively tolerant when it comes to sexual minorities and private sex lives. They’re not well represented by their party leaders, as far as policy is concerned. This is good news for Fred Thompson. The man has had a colorful and wide-ranging sex life, as I’m sure we will soon find out.

Wonkette, which never heard a gay rumor it wouldn't print, immediately translated:

Translated: COUGH COUGH GAY COUGH COUGH FRED THOMPSON IS GAY GAY GAY COUGH COUGH

But that’s not all.

Sullivan is not even close to the first person we’ve heard float this particular rumor, not that that says anything as to its truth.

And, indeed, a quick google search confirmed that lefties were in fact chumming the water with this rumor...

Is Fred Thompson on the Downlow? Posted by Susie in The Regime, Politics As Usual, Theocracy (July 5, 2007 at 8:02 am)

Why are all his ex-girlfriends so eager to come to the defense of his manliness?

Why did James Dobson say he was “un-Christian”?

Why is Rush Limbaugh complaining about the coverage of Thompson as sex symbol, saying, “There’s something wrong here”?

Lots and lots of rumors. I’ve heard them myself - I’ve even talked to someone who has witnessed some interesting behavior. I noticed when the Washington Post recently profiled him, several of the local commenters reacted along the lines of “I thought he was gay?”

Andrew Sullivan, preposterously, claimed he meant nothing of the sort, and hadn't heard a thing about this gay rumor circulating on left-wing sites (the sort of sites that he reads, and even if he doesn't read them, gets tipped about them), and that he merely meant that he heard Fred Thompson was a good kisser from some Southern woman.

Funny, he hadn't bothered to clarify that while getting hits from Wonkette asserting that his statement was code for "faggot."

It was my theory then, as it is now, that Sullivan lied because he knew his publisher would go ape-shit if he learned his magazine was being turned into a gay-gossip site by Sullivan.

And now? I believe Sullivan has been told to stop floating vicious rumors about Palin by his bosses, and so instead resorts to the wink-wink subterfuges of Page 6 and other gossip columns, employing code whose meaning everyone understands but, crucially, will not convict in a libel case.

I wonder if his publisher is aware of the "colorful" rumors he's still peddling, though.

If Sullivan wants to be the Michael Musto of the internet, he should own that. If he aspires to be the next Perez Hilton (and I'm sure they exchange emails!), then he should live that fantasy.

But this insane bullshit at The Atlantic? Where solid writers are attempting to discuss policy soberly, and yet share a masthead with Sullivan, busily pumping out every gay rumor or, erm, every fake-pregnancy-changeling-baby-fat-suited-governor rumor, that floats into his addled transom?

I would think they'd be a bit upset by the diminishment of their brand.

Which, incidententally, they are. Here's Douthat:

All Class

...

But given his primary-season insistence on his own credentials as a feminist, you'd think that Andrew would confine his attacks on Palin to critiquing her record and mocking her lack of experience, rather than, say, posting emails accusing her of being a bad mother for accepting the nomination, snickering over her children's names, and razzing her as a bimbo and a "trophy candidate."

Another post referred to "colleagues I once respected" peddling unhinged filth about Palin. Gee, I wonder whom he might have had in mind.

I'm calling my shot: He's gone by the end of September.

1 And I was just about to bring this to your attention too. I have a feeling their subscription cancellations are going to grow.

That was a terrible headline and they should lose a lot.

'"What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama?”

“One is a well turned-out, good-looking, and let's be honest, pretty sexy piece of eye-candy.

“The other kills her own food.”

Now we know, thanks to her triumphant debut at the Republican convention on Wednesday, that Mrs Palin not only slaughters her prey. She impales its head on a stick and parades it around for her followers to jeer at. For half an hour she eviscerated Mr Obama in that hall and did it all without dropping her sweet schoolmarm smile, as if she were handing out chocolates at the end of a history lesson.'

Run along now Us, I think Britney just left for the gas station.

6 This just isn't the kind of magazine you buy to be counter culture.  They were assholes to Sarah Palin, and deserve what they get.

I have no clue who their advertisers are, but I would send a letter about this if I did.  I never boycott things I like, but I'd still pretend I was going to.

9 Honestly, I think Michelle Obama is a beautiful woman. But the way the media is fawning over her brings back bad memories of the gushing about Janet Reno's accessorizing.

For the record, OK! magazine used the same picture of Palin on their cover, but the headlines were far more neutral, AND they offered two covers with this issue: one featuring the Obamas and one featuring Palin. Guess they didn't want to get b*tch-slapped like Us did.

We could always try to freep their poll too...

Posted by: ClobberGirl at September 04, 2008 09:48 PM (3t6Iu)

10 They probably think their readership is young women. Like the denizens/posters on TMZ or Dlisted. Young women HATE HATE HATE Palin (in the main) because of her blue collar husband, her hunting, working with hands, kids, etc. For who she is. Older, married women love her. Guess who reads US Magazine? [Young people surf the net, not buy magazines.] Total Pauline Kael thinking.

11 My theory is that Ace got a girlfriend to get back at AllahPundit for his hotair gig.  It's all about blogger jealousy.  That's the only explanation that makes sense.

We should find out who they are.

Anyone want to take one for the team and buy a copy (or at least freeload by reading it at the news stand)?

Well, that seals it. The signs are just coming together too perfectly, now I'm convinced Palin will be our next VP.

As Nostrodamus so sagely wrote: "And lo, when the die of  20 sides reveals a miracle most unexpected, a girlfriend of Ace, formerly Ace the Quick-Fisted, prodigous right-hander of baby-oil, then it shall be seen lights fantastic and ye shall see the slayer of moose overcome the plugs-of-misfortune.  And yea, the Child of Chicago shall weep for he has seen his demise, and his Wrighteous Jeremiad gone unheeded, leaving chickens and roosts alike ignominious. For the world will see a Paladin, strong yet hot....and yet, we will still ask, honestly....Ace has a girlfriend?

20 One of the pleasures of writing about sullivan is that I get to do something close to real writing.

I like wrestling with different ways of calling him insane.  This time i'm proud of "conspiracy theories so exquisitely baroque in their derangement they'd make Hermann Goerring's cheeks blush."

Yes, it's true.  Believe it or not, as slapdashedly first-draft as this blog is, I sometimes actually bother to re-write and polish.

21 About 3 years ago I was at a business meeting in Boston and one of the senior guys there during a lull period in the meeting goes off on a 1 minute rant about Bush and the Republicans in general. Around the table people nodded their heads in agreement and added in their own ephithets. As a closet conservative I kept quiet and statistically there must have been at least one other conservative in the room, but this possibility was just inconceivable to nearly all the people at the meeting. When you swim in an atmosphere of BDS, you can't imagine anything else.

Fight with me! Fight with me! Fight for what's right for our country! Fight for the ideals and character of a free people! Fight for our children's future! Fight for justice and opportunity for all!

Stand up to defend our country from its enemies! Stand up for each other; for beautiful, blessed, bountiful America! Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight!

NOTHING is inevitable here. We're Americans, and we never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history.

Maybe it's my inner Sullivan, but yeah, I get a bit teary-eyed.  That's the core of the man right there.  Love him or hate him, that's who he is.  Try not to be moved.  And the cheers of the crowd actually only make it better.

My worldview has been shattered.  Next thing you know, Allahpundit will have left his apartment by choice instead of necessity.  Just kidding- good on you, Ace.

Excellent point about conservative and liberal assumptions though- dead fucking on.  I visit blogs because I can't talk politics with anyone I don't know well (we all know what discussing politics with a liberal is like), and thus avoid the subject like the plague, no matter how stupid a statement someone makes.

Of course, liberals are completely comfortable suggesting that Republicans are going to turn the country into a theocracy, shred the Constitution, and declare war for oil anywhere it's been drilled.  They just assume (at least in the city) that everyone thinks like them, and anyone who doesn't is damaged in some way.

Suggest that- despite their past predictions- the country hasn't decended into a right wing version of Orwell's 1984, and you get derision, insults, or a blank stare that goes away only after they retreat to find those afflicted with their own brand of insanity.

Contrarian? Or simply crank?

Last night I was trying to find the right description of what's become of Andrew. I don't think he's clinically insane - it's not like he's hallucinating or out of touch with reality. And he doesn't seem to have diminished reasoning since the quality of his writings and vocabulary seem about the same as they were several years ago.

But clearly something is wrong with him - he's become an obsessive, somewhat paranoid crank who can still write well and has an accumulated reservoir of credibility. In the last few years he seems completely ruled by his immediate emotions and then he uses his intellect and writing skills to try and justify what his heart and impulses have already driven him to.

I actually doubt that it's something medical. Rather I suspect that Andrew has always been a deeply conflicted gay man who's had a driving need to be accepted and along with a huge streak of narcissism. So he tried to fit himself into roles that didn't quite fit, and went to extremes to make up for this. But his narcisssism is such that he can't ever admit being wrong, so it has to be that the world has rotated on its axis around him.

And Palin's past is "colorful" compared to Obama's?!?!? Attending a Muslim school in Indonesia, chumming with Marxists, terrorists, racist black radicals and mob-connected Syrians is less "colorful" than a former PTA hockey mom who was the mayor of a small town and later a Governor of Alaska?!?!?!?!?

Wait- I get it. Being gay is normal in Sullivan's world. Being a breeder isn't. What he's trying to say is that Obama and his entire family is gay, and thus less colorful. Thanks for the scoop, Andy- I hadn't considered that Obama was an AIDS infested fag until now, but now I know!  Well, unless he proves otherwise.  That is the standard, after all.

Last night I was trying to find the right description of what's become of Andrew. I don't think he's clinically insane - it's not like he's hallucinating or out of touch with reality. And he doesn't seem to have diminished reasoning since the quality of his writings and vocabulary seem about the same as they were several years ago.

But clearly something is wrong with him...

He's a conspiracy theory prone moonbat.  No different than the retarded 15 year olds that post on DU or Kos, except with a better writing ability.

There's nothing remarkable about him aside from the fact that he does this for a living instead of from his Mom's basement between studying for finals and bong hits.

Simplest explanation for why Obama's supporters don't listen when he tells them not to viciously attack Palin's family.

O!: Let me be as clear as possible.  I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits.

Daily Kos:  Listen Obama, it's Obama right?  Listen Obama, I've been doing this for a long time.  I've been doing this since you were a "community organizer".  I think I know a little bit about politics by now.  Why don't you go to a photoshoot.  The adults are talking.

O!:  This shouldn't be part of our politics.

Kos:  Are you still here?  Don't you know that I was once in an add with Ned Lamont?!  I've been doing this since 2002.  Now go vote "Present" while I mock-up this picture of Bristol Palin into a screen shot of "Eyes Wide Shut".

mad props for finally getting some tang, Ace, you deserve it.

And Sullivan?  I used to think your diatribes on him were over the top, but i liked them for the scary momentum of bile, like watching an out of control train of id careening down the track.  I guess that's because I had some of that reservoir of goodwill that Maetenloch refers to above.

Arianna Huffington was interesting for about 15 minutes before settling on leftie shrill as her avatar.  Sullivan was compelling and seemed serious for a good long time, he seemed like a principled oddball trying to be heard in a world where he didn't fit in.  Now there's no cover, he hasn't been a conservative for years and he's stopped being interesting.  I can't speculate if it's medical or not, but it's sad to see someone who once was a talent become a spittle-drooling tool of the unthinking left.

Maybe it's marriage.  That ruins a lot of good men.

67 HA! If true, this would be great news. It must come as a shock to them that not all their readers are Obamessiah worshippers. One of my college roommates was a faithful reader of US Weekly - and a fan of Fox News and the O'Reilly Factor. I imagine she's cancelled her subscription by now.

Posted by: Tina at September 05, 2008 03:13 AM (lFbsc)

68 Sullivan shares one trait with his crush, Obama: both are unserious men who are convinced themselves that they are very serious men. Obama's politics are gauzy, naive, and doctrinaire lefty; he doesn't think in specifics and he overestimates his charm. Sullivan's writing is histrionic, emotive, and melodramatic; he's a hormonal girl with a thesaurus. Yet he's convinced himself he's this brave voice in the wilderness. In reality, both are epic douches.

69 20 One of the pleasures of writing about sullivan is that I get to do something close to real writing.

87 Obama's wondering what to do with Palin.

Obama's responses and lack of responses ALL exemplify his lack of ability, not merely lack of experience, to PROPERLY respond to a threat.

What we see is Obama's DIPLOMACY OR LACK THEREOF!

This Obamatization of an opponent is NOT what will defy an international terrorist attack, or international aggression from Russia, or bombarding business piracy from China, or any difficulty facing America. What Obama had proven is that he will drag America down into the sewer, absolutely demolishing our credibility abroad. Obama is unable to produce his own accomplishment.

EVERYONE HATES the loser who attempts to be king of the hill by assassinating all opposition rather than win an election on merit.

Finally, that Obama ravages women and children proves him the rabid dog.

We had a big fat liberal at the bar last weekend. He was arguing with someone whose politics were not nearly so on-the-sleeve; the sort of guy who'd be comfortable trolling against any side.

Fatso worked himself into a fine lather about how awful Bush was, and about Iraq, and about dead soldiers. Eventually he'd convinced himself that Trollboy had insulted the veterans (which he hadn't done btw), and thereby insulted Fatso's late father (who had been a veteran). Then Fatso lunged and the bar staff had to toss him out of the bar.

I'm guessing that of those Gore 2000 voters who doubled down and went Kerry 2004, they've been living with Bush hatred for a long, long time...

112 I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Sullivan is the only thing that keeps me from subscribing to the Atlantic.

He's not the only thing; there's also the fact that magazines will pile up for months before I get to them.  But coincidentally I just got an e-mail from them a week or two ago saying that they wanted me back, and that if I reactivated my subscription they'd give me a year free.  Yesterday I forwarded that e-mail to their "feedback" e-mail address and said that I couldn't in good conscience subscribe, even for free, to a magazine that published that vile deranged dishonest partisan shill, but if they got rid of Sully maybe I'd think about it.

I'm sure it won't make a bit of difference, but at least they'll know.

117 You are confusing Richard the Third's lines with Shakespeare's dramatic art. There's the Play and there are the characters. If you can't follow that, it's no wonder you are lost in the fog. Some of us know what we're doing with our lives as artworks . I'm flattered that I get to be the target of vitriol from my own side. It's acknowledge of a sort for my efforts to change the political debate. Now can we get on with the assimilation process?

122 Grasping at straws. I think the attempt to bury me under the name of a totally loathsome person is smearing (although nouns have been proven to exist). But then again you think Shakespeare's day job was writing plays divorced from court politics. And Beethoven's day job was simply being a composer. And you don't have a clue what a composition is in the real world. As Burger King says, repeatedly (and it works to attract voters and customers alike): Have it your way.

Sullivan has been a walking, talking example of the dual life hypocrisy he loves to deride all his professional life.  He's so friggin dishonest that it is only a matter of time before he explodes into a pool of diseased bile.

Sullivan was always an "outed" gay.  He was famous for being gay, a "conservative" and most importanly, a gay who endlessly preached about the destructive nature of the far left gay lifestyle.  The real outing came when he was exposed as rawpowerglutes, cruising gay websites for anonymous hookups by night while excoritating that lifestyle by day.  In a move that defines Sullivan's hypocrisy, he wrote a lengthy rebuttal to his outing which he titles Sexual McCarthyism, An Article No One Should Have To Write where he argued, unbelievably enough, for the right to sexual privacy.

Ever since that episode, he seems to have had an epiphany and new direction.  He became the Gay Crusader, dedicated to embracing all aspects of the gay lifestyle and exposing the "hypocrisy" of Christianists and right wingers.  He whined like a little girl when he was shown to be the worst sort of hypocrite by having his sexual life exposed and seems to want revenge on everyone, particularly his former Christian, conservative allies.

He's a toilet bug, but I am loving watching him fall from someone people took seriously into a left wing gossip queen.

136 Oh, no debating that there is a political class (if you choose to use that word) and a cultural class, and so on-- all of whom have exclusionary entrance requirements. But to believe that those differences amount to a racial matter is borrowing indirectly from Protocols of the Secret Elders of Zion-- a bizarre conception about invisible string-pullers whom Hitler decided were better replaced with Aryan "Jews." It's all pretend, because the string pullers, or superior "race" simply doesn't exist. If you think it does, you are a racist, by definition. Do you think I am a racist or not, morons?
