— Ace I've been stewing about this since I first saw it on Patterico late last night -- Obama's boosters in the media yet again crying racism, this time over the fact that a McCain ad actually dares to associate Obama with his, um, associate Franklin Raines.
Who is black, as we all now know.
Cuffy Meigs is all over this. So is Hot Air.
I've been mulling how to put this, or if I should even try putting this at all. I don't want to be called racist, or play into the Boy Who Cried Racism narrative of The One.
But I think it needs to be said.
The provocative headline is maybe too provocative. What I'm getting at is not the good side of affirmative action, of course. Expanding recruiting and candidate searches to include minorities who might be otherwise overlooked; attempt to compensate for possible unconscious racism in a company or college, etc.
What I'm talking about is of course the bad side of affirmative action. The notion that is sometimes put forward that someone is owed a position simply because he is black (or, rather, is not white), and that no criticism of him can be tolerated -- again, simply because he is black.
Barack Obama continues to play this disgusting card. This isn't merely Karen Tumulty making the charge. It's quite possible she came up with this silly fart of an idea on her own.
However, we know that Barack Obama's surrogates are constantly calling the media to play the race card whenever an attack line rises that Barack Obama 1) views as a real threat and 2) does not wish to confront directly. He doesn't wish to confront it -- often because he has no good defense -- and so calls the media to peddle his tales of racism! to get his buddies in the media to bury the story. He has no answer to the charge, so he demands the media embargo the charge entirely.
Because, you know, questioning the qualifications, judgments, and longtime associations of a candidate is racist. Certainly we've never done so with any white candidates for that office!
Whether this will work as a campaign strategy, I don't know. I do know for a fact that it cannot work as a governing strategy. Presidents are pilloried on a daily basis; for god's sakes, one sixth of the country demands that George W. Bush be put on trial for murder.
And how will Barack Obama handle criticism once in office? Based on his performance so far, we can guess:
Unemployment Rate Rises to 6.3%; Barack Obama Charges It is Racist to "Associate" a Black President with a High Unemployment Rate
Slams Critics for Stirring "Age Old" Stereotypes of Black Unemployment
Vladimir Putin Flatly Rejects Obama's Call to Withdraw Troops from Lithuanian Border

Barack Obama's Hand-Picked Head of the Resolution Trust Corporation Indicted for Embezzlement, Self-Dealing
Obama Roars Back: "This is nothing but a racial witch-hunt playing upon old fears of black presidents and white collar crime"
Senate Panel Faults Obama for "Anemic" Response to Coordinated Al Qaeda Bombings of European US Embassies
Issues Four Page Rebuttal Titled, "Is This Because I'm Black?"
Al Qaeda Acting Head Ayman al-Zawahiri Blasts "Arrogance" of US
Obama Spokesman: That's Just Using Another Word for 'Uppity'"
I can see the future, and I see nothing but excuse-making and attempts to silence critics for Obama's coming miscues and incompetencies. Franklin Raines was a Barack Obama adviser of some capacity. Franklin Raines said so himself. The Washington Post reported it-- after fact-checking, as they say they always do, with the Obama campaign itself. Franklin Raines is a corrupt bastard who lined his own pockets at the expense of the taxpayers and only barely escaped prosecution.
It is not only legitimate for McCain to mention this as Fannie may disintegrates -- it is obligatory. It would be political malpractice to not mention Obama's adviser Franklin Raines. And for Obama and his campaign surrogates and his media allies to suggest noting Obama's chummy relationship with the Marauders of the Mortgage Market is racist is intolerable. And cannot be tolerated.
And, goddamnit, will not be tolerated.
Mr. Obama, you claim we should look past the fact you don't "look like other presidents." I strongly suggest you begin looking past that too, and stop trotting out the accident of your race as an all-purpose get-out-of-jail-free card to be played whenever you're caught out in a lie, a hypocrisy, or a 20 year association with a radical hate-preacher.
Obama says that his 19 months of campaigning are a good surrogate for actual experience as President. I'm willing to accept that notion, provisionally. And what I see of Obama's "first nineteen months in office" is a nonstop stealth campaign of media spin attempting to shut down every legitimate line of questioning or criticism by crying racism.
You want to be The Man in the Arena, Obama? Stop making excuses for yourself and demanding you be graded on an Affirmative Action Curve. It's time to stand on your own two feet, whatever color they are.

At least some blacks are not blindly following him

Raines is not an adviser to Obama. There were other people at Fannie Mae who Obama had closer ties with. They focused on Raines and showed a picture of him (a guy no one is familiar with at all) because he is black.
Even if he was an adviser (he's not), why show a picture of him? He isn't famous. No one recognizes him. No, you show a picture of him because you are linking a failed financial institution to two black guys.

This proves the statement "A racist is a conservative winning an argument with a liberal."
When Obama was ahead in the polls, there was no overt accusation of racism. Now that he's behind, there's a racist under every bed.
If you're a racist because you won't vote for Obama, then that means the 18 million Democrats who voted for Hillary during the primaries must be racists.

So, no one can show images of a black person that make them appear black unless it's to praise them? But "lipstick on a pig" had an entirely innocent meaning......
ARE YOU SERIOUSLY FUCKING KIDDING ME?
There is an existential threat to free discourse exhibited in this campaign and it sure isn't coming from the McCain side.

Is it racist to say you're smoking crack?
Have you noticed that, uh, Obama is, um, black?
Are you saying the McCain camp is trying to tie a black person to Obama, and that's somehow racist? With that rule, what isn't racist? Franklin Raines was advising Obama, and he was in charge while Fannie Mae went down the toilet, and he gave himself a ton of money for doing it. And, during that period, Obama was one of the largest recipient of donations from Fannie Mae.
While setting it up that you can't accuse a politician of cronyism and backroom dealing and poor judgement because both of the people involved are black would be a pretty sweet deal, if you could do it. But I don't think Obama is going to manage it. Even middle-of-the-road white folks who initially like Obama aren't going to go for this "racist" this, "racist" that crap.
And most folks don't respond well to being bullied into pulling the lever for somebody because, if they don't, everyone will know they're a "racist". Really? It's racist to vote my conscious? Well, then, get ready to hand me a white sheet and hood, because here I go . . .
Someone else notes: If you're a racist because you won't vote for Obama, then that means the 18 million Democrats who voted for Hillary during the primaries must be racists.
Of course they are. Because Barack is black, and Hillary is white. Thus, they are inherently, without question, racists. Definitely. And so are you, if you don't vote for Barack in Obama. And so is the whole nation, if we don't elect Barack for president. And you'll pay for your racism, if Barack loses. Oh, you will pay.

Sometimes I wonder how the hell people come up with these "That's racist!" arguments.
In this example, there is a picture of Obama (black male) and then a picture of Raines (black male) and then a picture of an old white lady. The Time reporter states OMG this is obviously racist! I saw this ad a couple of times and racism never even remotely occured to me.
There are three possible explanations for this:
1) The ad really is racist. This is ludicrous and I won't argue against it. I leave it up to fair minded people to decide.
2) The reporter is a racial hypochondriac who is searching far and wide for any evidence of Republican racism. (I think this is only partly it).
3) The reporter herself actually does view black men in this way. The ad happens to feature 2 black guys and then a white woman, and the reporter in her heart feels empathy for this white woman. I really think that this plays a part here.
I am honestly beginning to think that the MSM and the cultural left is actually racist itself. I used to think that they would just play the "race card" as a dirty trick to further their goals. But their obsession with race seems a little too sincere at this point for that to be the only explanation.

He was the CEO and head mismanager of Fannie Mae for at least five years and up until 2004. He was cooking the books and getting sanctioned.
You show a picture of him because he is (or was if Obama has now deemed him replaceable and thrown him under his bus) an advisor to Obama, the man who would use his team of thousands to make his decisions on this very financial crisis should he make it to the Presidency.
You show a picture of him to show the world who is partially responsible for the mess we have now and not let the crook escape artist avoid deserved scrutiny. We want his mug shot public current.

Close, but I don't think that's it, Dan-O. More like the Leftists try to view the McCain ads in the eyes of their fellow racist Americans. Even Seattle Slough knows the ad isn't racist. His concern is that others less enlightened than him will see Obama as, well, a black man.
So reminding Americans that Obama is black is bad for Obama, according to the Obama supporters. In other words, McCain and the nasty Republicans are "confusing" the American people and tapping into their fears by putting black people in ads that critical of Obama.

Posted by: Bart at September 19, 2008 10:40 AM (w3NmV)
Despite being ridiculous on its face, it does appear to be effective. The "racism charge" is strong enough to keep enough likely voters (mostly independents) away from McCain. Not necessarily that they are going to vote for Obama, but just stay away from McCain (i.e. vote present=stay at home.)
Still, with each passing day, I again point out that the unrelenting, escalating, and often disgusting attacks against McCain/Palin are continuing apace in the MSM.
Today, Powerline blog put it succinctly, "The [Wa]Post's news section is taking its role as an appendage to the Obama campaign to new levels on almost a daily basis."
The unanswered question is what will the MSM do for Obama after he wins and things go (very) badly for this country and our allies?
My guess is that in large part the Jews will be blamed, and from there, it's going to get ugly. But I am repeating myself. At least the events to-date appear to be holding to my predictions.
McCain better find Obama's weak spot soon or at least hope he lands one clear and devastating blow before it's too late. Otherwise, the MSM and the Soros minions will carry Obama to the finish line.
BTW, what did Obama do while he attended Columbia?

Ace, that's a pretty good post. I've been stewing over writing something about this for months, but have held back because, sadly, it is a delicate subject. Its more complicated for me, because I grew up in Mississippi in the 60's and 70's, and I grew to HATE black people. I was regularly beaten by gangs of black boys/men in high school and robbed (at gunpoint!) twice. After I got out of the shit-hole, poverty stricken, crime-infested town I grew up in, I realized that the black people I knew were not representative of all black people. So now I have a problem- am I disqualified from criticising blacks because I once was a racist?
Maybe. But here is what I know. The very precept/concept that MLK dreamed of and died for (judge me not on the color of my skin, but the content of my character) has been perverted into the exact opposite. MLK would never have approved of racial preferences, quotas, or segregated groups like the Congressional Black Caucus, the Black Miss America Pageant, or even Ebony magazine. Yet dare, if you will, to refer to blacks as "you people" and you won't get a pleasant response.
The double standards are stunning, and Obama is taking great advantage of it. He gets to inject race into the campaign at will, paint McCain as a racist, and enjoys that McCain can't even respond to accusations of racism lest he be viewed as a racist! Yossarian himself could not have identified a better "catch-22".
As for me, I'm sick of it. But I suppose that I'll have to wait for a conservative black man or woman (JR Watts, Michael Steele, Condi) to run for office to actually prove that being "sick of this shit" doesn't mean I'm a racist.

Gotta disagree, here. Nothing stops any serious voter, or casual voter for that matter, from casting a vote for McCain Head Racist once the curtain closes. While some might call that the Bradley Effect, others might call it the "No freakin' way I'm voting for that lightweight and double-no freakin' way am I going to get bullied out of my voice/vote" Effect.
People don't like being called racist. They will resent and revolt. I'm counting on Team Obama to keep playing the card and the country to flush them down the toilet.
Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at September 19, 2008 10:53 AM (sI5Ho)
I think it's exactly the opposite, and why the polls are 10-12 points off... people are going to make Obama pay for the constant charges of racism come November... they're saying now that they'll vote for him because they don't like being called "RACIST!!!" but once that election booth curtain closes behind them, the resentment of all those months of accusation is going to come back and bite him in the ass. The exit polls will be off for the same reason (which will of course give the lefties something else to scream about... mmmmm... popcorn).

Which is actually a damn shame, because it's my opinion that racism still happens in ways subtle and overt all over this country- I'm a pasty white boy married to a cute black girl (go figger, guess the Irish do get lucky now and agin) so I see racist horseshit happen way more regularly than I'd have believed, and by people both black and white that should really know better. However, bad acting cocksucking fuckfaces (trying to help with the numbers, yo) like the ones mentioned above have tried to hide behind the smokescreen of bogus "racism" for so long that when real and for true racism occurs, a bona fide accusation of same has no resonance.
Not trying to whine here, just calling it like I see it. I'm punching way, WAY above my weight class, so life is real good.
And for the record, the wife is appalled and more than a little embarrassed by ole Barky the zero. She's a big fan of Palin's though.
Ace- keep on with the bannings and the warnings. You've got one of the cleverest, funniest, and tightest blogs on these here intertubies - this cheesy tiptoeing around the magic naughty n word and the ebonics stuff is beneath both you and the most excellent posters on this site.

If we lose, we lose. There is no silver lining.

This gratuitous accusation of racism by Democrats reminds me of the book "The Turner Diaries." The storyline overall was wretched and forgettable, and you young'uns may not be aware of it and it's supposed connection to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, but one passage that stuck in my memory contained a scene where a woman was forced to submit to the sexual demands of a group of black men. She submitted not because they threatened to physically harm her but instead they called her a racist for not wanting to have sex with a black man.
Granted, it was a piece of alarmist, intolerant fiction, but in this day of racial McCarthyism, such a situation does not seem too far-fetched.

Raines is not an adviser to Obama. There were other people at Fannie Mae who Obama had closer ties with. They focused on Raines and showed a picture of him (a guy no one is familiar with at all) because he is black.
Sounds like it's simply racist to show imagery of a black man involved in a scandal of titanic proportions, even if it, you know, makes the advertisement a lot more effective than simply throwing the guy's name around with a test pattern running in the background.
Thanks for proving our point. You know, the one where it's racist simply to say anything negative about a "person of color". Hopefully the McCain camp is doing a re-write with Bob Saget's face CGI'd in over Raines' just to set things right. Johnny Mac can go back to doing ads featuring black folks as soon as he wants to celebrate their awesomey awesomeness.
Cretin.

Once a minority child can grow up without a relatable story of racism from their parents, then can we discuss ending affirmative action. Enough time has not passed since the last firehose was sprayed. The fact is that some of us still look at black people as only poor criminals or rich athletes. If you think for one second this is true, then please understand that you are the reason affirmative action exists.

Please folks: if you're gonna comment on the TV ads (notice, that was pural) re: the relationship the Obama campaign formally maintained with prior CEOs (again, plural) of Fannie and Freddie it would be nice if someone bother to notice that both CEOs were indeed pictured - just in seperate videos. Raines was no more singled for his race than Johnson,
Nice try WaPo & d'Obama campaign. But dis dog ain't gonna hunt . . . ever!

This is the single most pitiful waste of time I have seen in all of my years on the planet. Barack is a human being. He is not perfect. He is going to be totally void of any issues. Clearly however, upon researching the candidates extensively he is clearly the better choice for president.
I am sick of people talking about the race card when we, as white people bring it out just as much as black people do. I don't see anyone talking about McCains ties obsessively? I don't hear the keating 5 thing everyday by the Obama campaign. Yes, he was found guilty of having poor judgement although he was exonerated of wrong doing. Clearly, he associated with some unsavory people. He has donated money to the YPM and we know they trick democrats into registering republican. He has donated money to terrorist too. Yet, we don't see that. All I hear is this POW nonsense. That is great and all, but that doesn't make you a good choice for president. Frankly, the pick of his running mate is the biggest joke in washington and will fracture the entire party. Yet, we want to obsess about who Obama knows? Please, let's move on from this nonsense.
