— Ace Update: She did play the race card, as was perfectly predictable. As an Ace of Spades exclusive, I have the arrest warrant against her.
Capitol Hill police plan to issue an arrest warrant today for Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.).The warrant is related to the incident Wednesday when McKinney allegedly slapped a Capitol Hill police officer.
Charges could range from assault on a police officer, which is a felony carrying a possible five year prison term, to simple assault, which is a misdeamenor.
McKinney has canceled a news conference that she had scheduled for this morning to discuss the incident.
McKinney issued a statement yesterday saying she "deeply regrets" the confrontation with the police officer.
The six-term congresswoman apparently struck a Capitol Police officer when he tried to stop her from entering a House office building without going through a metal detector. Members of Congress wear identifying lapel pins and routinely are waved into buildings without undergoing security checks. The officer apparently did not recognize McKinney, she said in a statement.
Asked on-camera Thursday by Channel 2 Action News whether she intended to apologize, McKinney refused to comment.
I guess she forgot to present her RaceCard. I'm sure she won't make that mistake in the upcoming weeks.
Get ready for the racial-grievance/victim campaign for McKinney. We'll be told all sorts of things, like she's only being punished for acting "uppity," etc.
Slapping a cop is not "uppity." It's a felony, Cynthia.
Of course, this will probably only make her more popular in her district.

The POLICE OFFICER was not at fault?? Is Pelosi attempting a defense for Cynthia by insinuating that the officer made "a mistake??"

McKinney
... But[McKinney] being the Girl Who Cried Racism means that people will also roll their eyes at the legitimate slights that the first black Congresswoman from Georgia has faced.
In August 1993, during her first term in office, a Capitol Hill police officer tried to prevent her from bypassing a metal detector, as members of Congress are allowed to do.
For years afterward, The Hill reports, the Capitol Police pinned a picture of McKinney to an office wall, warning officers to learn her face because she refuses to wear her member's pin. (And because officers are innately suspicious of a black woman with braided hair and gold shoes.{ed note: Irony})
Five years later, she blasted White House security after guards thought her 23-year-old white aide was the congresswoman.
Obviously, since McKinney cannot be bothered to wear her members pin, the Capitol police are left with no choice but to put up her picture at every stinking entry point to the Capitol.

the Sullentrop article was written April 19, 2002.
Clearly, somebody needs to ask McKinney why she won't wear the member's pin, Or ask her Chief of Staff why an aide or intern isn't tasked with putting the damn thing on her when she leaves the building.

Nice. Because any one who'd vote for her , supports, you know, violence. Does this mean anyone who'd vote for Cunningham is on the take? Or anyone who'd vote for Delay supports money laundering?
That being said, completely inappropriate. She should apologize and take her lumps whatever they might be.
Posted by: Larry the Urbanite at March 31, 2006 08:11 AM (Lpswv)
Supports violence AND anti-semitism. Voters were unaware that Cunningham was a crook. And Delay has not been convicted of anything. And having the moveon.org judge initially try to handle his case, doesn't give me any confidence in the charges against him.

And, Larry, the truth hurts, but, yeah, the people in her district are probably in the firm "fuck the police!" crowd.
The fact that she's more then willing to slap around the po-po probably just earned her a couple of points in the polls.

It is better to give than recieve.
But would she have to resign under Georgia law or house rules?
I believe she would have to resign if convicted of a federal offence, but I’m not sure about that.

Because they don't like the police? Because they want someone to slap a federal officer? Because they don't like checkpoints and would like to slap someone? All bad things. But any of the above might be the reason Ace was thinking of. But, a) what is Ace basing his claim on and b) why paint all of her constituents with this deragotory brush? What purpose does that serve other than to polarize the debate with innuendo?
Posted by: Larry the Urbanite at March 31, 2006 10:07 AM (Lpswv)
My brother got one of the automated phone calls that said, basically, if you'd ever voted Republican, it was illegal to vote against Cynthia in the Democratic primary.
Very nice. And highly untrue.
Some of her mass mailings are entertaining. Her "hip-hop conference" inviting both new- and old-school misogynists and felons to have their concerns addressed in Congress was perhaps my favorite.
Still and all, you can see why the people of my district would prefer she spend a lot of time out of state.

Actually, this was from the article "Merle Black, a professor of politics at Emory University, says that while the scuffle was rare for an elected politician, it's unlikely to cost McKinney more than a few votes. Black says McKinney is in damage control -- cutting her losses by not insisting on right or wrong." SO, Ace was not that far offbase.

"I deeply regret the incident with the police officer. I was in a hurry and thought the officer would recognize me. When he did not and detained me, I reacted improperly and I am sorry for that. It is always inapropriate to strike a law enforcement officer. I have discussed the matter with the Capitol Police and we are going to work on a system to prevent this from happening again.
Again, I am deeply sorry."
I would have a lot more sympathy for her. That would be a genuine apology showing remorse. I would bet that the Capitol Police might even accept that and choose to not file charges.
Instead, she had to make it about how important she is and how unimportant the law is.

I'm not CraigC, but I'll give it a try.
Because they don't like the police?
Yes.
Because they want someone to slap a federal officer?
Yes.
Because they don't like checkpoints and would like to slap someone?
Yes.
Larry, there's lots of people who like to "stick it to the man" in some fashion, either themselves or, more commonly, by proxy. Lots of people hate the police. Lots of black people hate white people. Lots of people in McKinney's district don't have any problem with her moonbatty anti-semitism and so is it really such a big stretch to think that her slapping an authority figure might just actually endear her to her constituents? I don't think so.
b) why paint all of her constituents with this deragotory brush?
Uh, bnecause they voted for her? Because we don't hear them insisting that she apologize or resign or something like that?
What purpose does that serve other than to polarize the debate with innuendo?
You mean like implying that all conservatives are racists like you did the other day?

Larry, Larry, Larry. Classic liberal technique of moving the goalposts. Don't try to backtrack. You're the one who made the leap to saying that Ace was saying because her constituents would probably like it, that means he assumes that they all endorse violence.
I don't presume to speak for Ace, but I'm guessing he was talking about the "sassy black woman who don't take no shit and is fightin' the power and takin' it to Da Man" thing.

The Capitol cop fucked up, plain and simple. He never should've touched the Congresswoman.
But you make a big deal about this while remaining sullenly silent about real crimes like the bankrupting of our Treasury, an illegal war and criminal negligence both on 9/11 and post-9/11, illegal wiretapping that could victimize you as well as me and a whole host of high crimes and misdeamors too multitudinous to enumerate.
In a way, your enthusiasm over this "scandal" is really kind of cute. It helps keep typing chimps like you and Malkin busy while the big boys take on the serious blogging stories.

The congresswoman should've worn her ID, and stopped when the cop asked her. Our treasury would be in a lot better shape if we didn't subsidize the poor and the lazy with entitlements, Congress approved the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan (making them quite legal), criminal negligence in the FBI on 9-11 may or may not be proven later, post 9-11 security hasn't been all it could have been, it cannot be illegal for the President to exercise a Constutionally granted power, and I haven't seen any convincing evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. Go back to Kos.

So all security personnel at the Capitol should be required to recognize all 535 members of Congress on sight, is that what you're saying? What are you, an idiot?
You know, they do give members of Congress ID badges to wear so incidents like this don't happen. Slappy refuses to wear hers, though. Nice.

Strange how it is taking longer to convict a Representitive who has video of him soliciting a bribe and a couple thou of frozen cash in his freezer, than it is taking to deal with CM.
Honestly, if she had the sense God gave (fill in creature here), she would have unabasedly apoligized to the officer involved, taken responsibility, and made special effort to wear her pin from then on. But that would require sense. And taking responsibility. And effort. And an apology.
Good thing we have a special institution where people without these critical people skills can be placed away from society, where they can do little damage. Too bad it is in the House.
