Yehzoved!

Seems like a few mourners for Dear Leader weren't appropriately toeing the line, so they got the Nikolai Yehzov treatment.

No, it's the same photo, look closer. It's a very famous photo. It's been confirmed time and again as being the same one, with Yezhov airbrushed out. Too bad they didn't do anything about Molotov's uncomfortable smile.

10 Oh and I very familiar with altering photos for political history, in an earlier part of my life I regularily handled Chinese communist pictures that were altered, most done crudely but some with considerable finesse, so I know what the real thing looks like. Propaganda departments in communist states did often alter crowd photos, but if they did in this case it isn't at all in evidence. Almost all the details are inconsistent with it.

19 The NK photos are from two different locations--given the relative positions of the vehicles, I'd say there was a time lapse too, the one on the right being taken after the one on the left.  Yes, we all know how they operate, but the evidence is insufficient to draw the conclusion here.

20 #13 they are avoiding a preference cascade which could unseat them from power. It's harder to overthrow a looney dictator if one thinks everyone else is afraid or in love with the bastard. That's why revolutions often hit a tipping point and then its rapidly downhill for the dictator's regime.

Yeah, I guess I get that.  My point is that you would only be afraid of a preference cascade if you knew the people had a reason to hate you.  Which you wouldn't believe if you actually thought you were doing what was best for the Country and its People.

My general belief is that people don't believe they're bad- indeed, that they think they're generally "good," so actively believing that you must keep the proles in line through this kind of obvious but, above all, petty propaganda seems like a window into a mind so warped that I cannot understand it at all.

Rational people are usually quite convinced that they are good people doing good work, even if that work is primarily in their own self-interest.  That doesn't mean that their work cannot result in evil.
The criminally insane (and truly evil) people don't care about anything but their self-interest.  However, many of them have learned how to adopt the veneer of the seemingly rational person.  These are the most dangerous ones.

How would the NKVD or whoever retouched photos back then? Would you have made a print, blown it up, airbrushed or painted it, then photographed the altered print?

Posted by: Skookumchuk at December 30, 2011 09:40 AM (btzPD)

While enlarging the negative to make a print you "dodge" or mask the unwanted item out of the print, leaving a blank spot. Then you airbrush in whatever you want.

99 Isn't it to coincidental that everyone out of line would be in place in the two seconds between the two photos?

I'm guessing more in the five to seven range.  Very slow rate of motion would be in line with a funerary procession.  Without knowing for sure, an actual time estimate isn't really possible.

One of those photos (the original, oddly enough) is cropped. The (ostensibly) photoshopped one is wider.

It's hard to tell, because the perspective is farther away and I can't zoom in on the picture, but if you look at specific sillouette shapes in the crowd, you can see in the 2nd photo they are the exact same sillouettes in the exact same position in the same place.

It would have to be the same photo. If you could zoom in on it, I'd guess you could tell easily one way or the other.

I'm thinking that Luap Nor's actual performance in the caucuses will be considerably less than the polls indicate because the majority of his supporters, while they may be sober enough to answer the phone and "talk" to a pollster, will still be too stoned to find the actual caucus locations and show up at the right time.

Yezhov also conducted a thorough purge of the security organs, both NKVD and GRU, removing and executing many officials who had been appointed by his predecessors Yagoda and Menzhinsky, but even his own appointees as well. He admitted that innocents were being falsely accused, but dismissed their lives as unimportant so long as the purge was successful.

160 Hundreds of Sunni Muslims gathered in Baghdad Friday to celebrate the withdrawal of American forces, but in a sign of the sectarian divisions that re-emerged immediately after their departure, Shiite Muslims did not join the event. The celebration took place near the Abu Hanifa mosque, the main house of worship in the primarily Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah in northern Baghdad. To secure the event, Iraqi troops blocked traffic on roads leading to the mosque and searched people approaching the area. Gary Johnson will win the L nomination and be on the ballot in all 57 states.

I have to agree with the only other conservative Jew in New Jersey.

The purpose of a primary is to choose the candidate most favored by the party, and not by some ever-changing group of independents, Democrats who feel like voting, and various other lunatics who want drugs legalized (Yes, I'm looking on the Paultards).

The party's candidate should be chosen by those within the party who are motivated to vote -- and nobody else!

Re: the photos

The second photo (right) does appear to have been taken a few seconds after the first. However, note the guys with the tripod. It's unlikely they would have been able to pick that thing up and get into line so quickly. Also, they wouldn't want to be that close to people, because they tend to trip over the tripod legs.

184 3 Those are two different photos of Stalin - no one disappeared.  In the top one, the man in the uniform is in front of the one in the suit and hat.  In the bottom one, he's behind him.  Could've been taken a few seconds apart.

That's a famous example of airbrushing out a photo.  Stalin had a whole department that did nothing but edit people who'd fallen into a disfavor out of photos.  It was part of the same outfit that constantly rewrote history.

OK... actually some of the cars do appear to have moved a bit.

Anyone know how fast the cars were going? Unless they were really, really really crawling, I cannot fathom how the car could move so little and the people could disappear from the shot altogether in that time.

Posted by: Entropy, and if you don't agree you hate America and want Obama to win at December 30, 2011 10:39 AM (pu3AL)

The article says that the photos were taken a few seconds apart.  All of the out of order people would have had to run furiously away from the parade to not be in both shots.  Photoshopped.

The preachiness of the "Drug war has failed!" people is a little tough to tolerate. How about if you get back to me when you examine the issues in the real world and have some solutions to:

1. Who pays for drug-addicted babies and their life long medical costs?
2. The huge increase in the demand for abortions for many of those fetuses.
3. The increase in DUI, which will increase the number of auto-accident deaths.
4. The unknown. but presumably large, increase in the number of Americans who become addicted to drugs, with the attendant social problems.

190 As far as the Mavericky argument goes....knowing what I know now, I still wouldn't have voted for McCandidate in 2008. I'm long past voting for some creaky fossilized turd just because he's slightly less stinky than his opponent.

The article says that the photos were taken a few seconds apart.

Not if it was a few real seconds. Seconds are longer than most people give them credit for. One-one-thousand, two-two-thousand, three-three-thousand.

Plenty of time for people to walk out of shot in a 'few' seconds. And also, that would mean the cars were really, really, really crawling for those few seconds, because the people would have travelled about twice the distance the cars did. The cars went a single car length.

So they'd have had to be going about half walking speed, or 1mph. It's hard to even drive a car at 1mph. You'd be on the break the whole time. I dunno about N. Korean cars though... 1mph would be a remarkably slow speed even for a parade procession.

Posted by: Entropy, and if you don't agree you hate America and want Obama to win at December 30, 2011 06:34 AM (pu3AL)

So my position is either the people have been photoshopped out, or the cars have cutouts in the floor and the people inside are pushing them.

North Korea? Seems plausible.

What part of the Constitution gives the Federal government the authority to regulate intrastate marijuana production and distribution?

Quit with the bullshit. You either support a constitutional government or you don't. If you want to ban pot, you should get an ammendment. That would make the prohibition legal at least.

Do you support the Constitution as a limitation of government powers or not? If they can ignore one thing when it suits them, they can ignore another just as easily.

I don't personally endorse or advocate banning it, I think it should be outright legal.

Anyone who thinks the pot issue is remotely seperable from any other civil liberties or small government issues, need to read our beloved Scalia's decision from Gonzales (R - AG) v. Raiche.

"Registered Republican" types are willing to give the government unlimited power in the name of banning pot.

OK, you're worried about your children.

Franklin - Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Patrick Henry - In a state of tranquillity, wealth, and luxury, our descendants would forget the arts of war and the noble activity and zeal which made their ancestors invincible. Every art of corruption would be employed to loosen the bond of union which renders our resistance formidable. When the spirit of liberty, which now animates our hearts and gives success to our arms, is extinct, our numbers will accelerate our ruin and render us easier victims to tyranny. If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom - go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Minor point - Trotsky was never a friend of Stalin's. LDT was airbrushed out of the Revolution and out of Lenin's circle, and Stalin frequently inserted. Stalin really hated the fact that he was not Trotsky.

I don't think he could've managed to skeddadle on his own in the few seconds twixt shot A and B. And the solo guy a little down from them must've cartwheeled like a maniac in the meantime if his absence was natural. No, someone was doing photoshop cleanup and sweetening the visual. And here's the thing - it doesn't have to be political motivated per se, just someone was cleaning up the contrast for reproduction and thinking hey, might as well clear away a little "extraneous detail" to focus on the subject while I'm at it.
