Will Obama Play The Hillary Card?
Plus: Polls
Plus: Invisible Obama -- the Song

— Ace

Instapundit links a story that Hillary is staying as far as physically possible from Charlotte.

But then a reader speculates that that is just a smokescreen, and that the big surprise of the convention will be a Hillary-for-Biden VP swap.

Meanwhile, Reuters has Romney's favorables improving, but without any bounce in the head-to-head.

But in James Carville's Democracy Corps poll, Romney has a huge 54-38 lead with independents (16 points!).

Oddly enough, that poll puts Obama ahead by two skinny points, 49-47.

He is obviously counting on a near-2008 level of Democratic turnout. I don't buy that. And no one seems to be thinking of a big right-leaning turnout.

Finally, this is just special. From Misfit Politics, the guys who brought you Attaaaack Waaaatch.

That Obama lead doesn't seem right given Romney's lead with Ind.  Anyone know the D/R/I breakdown of this poll?

7 Reuters are far left-wing, and that's all they could do to skew it. Polls do not reflect opinion - they are there to try and shape it. The race is Romney's to win or lose. By how much is a whole other discussion.

22 Dumping Biden at this point would be seen as weakness in that it would imply The One isn't perfect and made a mistake.  His ego would never allow it.

My money is still on announcing an end to efforts by Federal law enforcement to go after pot.  The message to the youth/college/stoner set will be unmistakable:  If I'm reelected and this policy continues for four years it will never be undone, pot will be forever legal; but if you sit on your ass and eat Cheetos Romney will undo this before it really gets started so get fired up and drag my ass over the finish line.

What other major faction has yet to receive a major lawless inititive?  Kinda obvious he is holding a big one back to get some buzz at the convention.  So it is either that or a lame student debt forgiveness for 'public service' scheme.

36 I am a partisan, I get it I am going to see things in a right leaning way but still someone explain to me why these polls are still so close? It seems like Obama is just so weak, he has nothing to run on but negatives and yet the polls show Obama as close to Romney. Is it the polls themselves and if so why are most polls still showing him as close? Is it the power of the media to prop up Obama and run cover for him? I just don't understand it, in a general sense partisanship aside it doesn't feel like it should be this close without over sample Democrats but a giant margin.

57 There isn't going to be a VP swap - remember the only reason Obama picked a dim bulb like Biden is because Biden is completely non-threatening to him.  For Obama to pick anyone else is to (1) admit failure in his original choice (which he can't do), and (2) then pick someone who is actually competent, which again he cannot do.

64 This Administration is focused on the important things. The U.S. Justice Department says it has reached a settlement with the Sacramento (California) Public Library over a trial program the library was conducting that let patrons borrow Barnes and Noble NOOK e-book readers. DOJ and the National Federation of the Blind objected to the program on grounds that blind people could not use the NOOK e-readers for technological reasons. The Justice Department said the settlement is aimed at stopping discrimination: “Emerging technologies like e-readers are changing the way we interact with the world around us and we need to ensure that people with disabilities are not excluded from the programs where these devices are used,” said Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez in a news release.

The Reuters poll:

For the survey, a sample of 1,632 registered voters was interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

107 Romney's victory is utterly inevitable. He'll show Obama just like he showed Ted Kennedy, Huckabee, McCain, Gingrich, and Santorum. Sure, he doesn't have the utterly crushing financial advantages he did then, but it's irrelevant. Romney is the second Reagan, a master politician who smoothly connects with white working class folks.

But the point is you cannot even offer mild disagreement with the liberal hive mind collective.

Clint = BAD is the standard.

There are some tweets that are disgraceful and for what? Because she had the audacity to support Mitt.

Now she may be a closet conservative or conservative leaning but she's not out and proud about it.

She was on a show with George Stephanolopus and Donna Brazile and a few other people and somehow the subject of Obamacare came up and she said she didn't support and the looks she got. George then started to basically argue with her and challenge her.

These people are insane and they have turned the nation into one big political death match and we are fucking losing.

123 36- Drew- I agree with you. Even if the polls oversample Dems, they are what they are and we can keep feeling safe in the assumption that the final sample will be in our favor. If we do, we will all wake up that first Wednesday in November wondering how we lost, when the final vote breaks down exactly as the polls were predicting. I say that as a massive supporter of Romney/Ryan. Romney was my first choice in 2008 and 2012, so I am not one of those who compares a vote for him this time to the "hold-your-nose-and-vote-for-McCain" feeling that I had in 2008. Even compared with the introduction of Palin to the ticket in 2008, I think we are far more energized and enthusiastic about our chances coming out of this convention than we did in 2008, so I am a little disturbed not to see it reflected in the polls. On that note, I have long been a believer in the preference cascade that Ace has been speaking about. However, having been a supporter of Romney from the get-go, I remember feeling alone in the wilderness on the conservative blogs, to the point where I had to stop reading some of them (I'm looking at you- AmSpec, Allah, Professor Jacobsen, et.al.) because their disdain for Romney was SO vitriolic and harsh. My worry is that, as I've seen with some commenters on these blogs, we may only be seeing a preference cascade on our own side, where people who would never vote for Obama are finally settling in with Romney. If you read the comments on Hot Air today, you would never know that the Romney supporters were very few and very far between only a few short months ago. Although I think the cascade is coming, I think it is somewhat premature to assume that it extends as far as we wish to believe it does currently. We've got to keep pushing the cascade out beyond our own borders. As a first step, if you know any college kids or young adults, send them the link to that Invisible Obama video. It's priceless!!

130 If Hillary had announced she was stepping down as Sec State in late summer or early autumn of 2011, and gracefully handed over the reins to Kerry or whomever else just after new years, and taken some much needed rest for two or three months, then Obama could have announced her as a new running mate smack dab in the middle of the Republican primaries when Mitt had a lead, but not enough delegates, and things were still kinda unsettled. Just imagine the chaos. Personally, I think it woulda been checkmate, 'cause too many Americans woulda gotten swept up in the novelty and excitement of it all, and I suspect things woulda gotten really ugly on the Republican side as panic set it. But now? A VP swap would reek of desperation, 'cause it would actually be terribly fuckin' desperate, and everyone, and I mean everyone, would know it was. *shrugs*

Obama utterly believes in himself.  He is not going to quit. I certainly hope he keeps Slo - Joe, but Hillary! has problems of her own.  The biggest benefit of adding Hillary! to the ticket is that a lot of pro-Clinton Democrat bigwigs will contribute money to the Obama - Clinton campaign, which they might not do for the Obama - Biden ticket.

The Democratic Convention next week will be weird, but the Major Bullshit Media will portray them as "important", "inclusive" and a bunch of other Stewart Smalley - like platitudes.

There will probably be a "bounce" as self - identified Democrats endorse the re-election of President Obama, but the bounce will evaporate by the end of September.

And that's all I got from the 8-ball tonight.

If Obama dumped Biden, there is a real serious chance Romney could get Biden to endorse him. Biden is crazy, no doubt about it and honestly thinks he is the next in line for the POTUS gig from the left.

183 Hilary and Bill are not that stupid.  If she joins the ticket and Obama loses, in 2016 she is tainted by the loss.  If she joins the ticket and Obama wins, in 2016 she is tainted by his colossal failure of a record, because there's no way the economy will recover under his watch (as secretary of state she will primarily be associated with his foreign policy record, not his economic record).

Her best bet is to do exactly what that article the other day said she will do: leave the administration, rest up, get healthier (i.e., lose the saddle bags and dark circles under her eyes, and hope the Romney administration doesn't have time to correct Obama's mistakes before the next election.

Remember HillaryCare came before RomneyCare.

Hillary is just a little smarter and a little better connected (and fewer psych problems) than the ONE so maybe, maybe things would've gone a bit better but I have my doubts.

The Dem-GOP breakdown will be within 3 points or so. Obviously a lot more Democrats will vote for Romney than Republicans for Obama. Independents will be in excess of 25% of the total. So if Romney winds up in the mid-50's regarding the latter bloc he'll be the next president. To get there it's all about the dummy, economy.

261 104 re: polls- the soft comfort of lying to yourself. Nate Silver has Obama/Romeny at 72/28. Prepare for your fucking. The US survived 8 years of Bush, prepare for 4 more years.

Posted by: 2012intel at August 31, 2012 09:24 PM (0bM3O)

Nate Silver massages his model to get the results he wants. Every poll that has Romney ahead gets weighted less than a poll that has Obama ahead. He even weighs one pollster more or less in different states based on who is leading. In one state Ras has Romney ahead, he weighs Ras less than PPP who has Obama ahead. In another state that PPP has Romney ahead, he weighs it less than a Ras poll that has Obama ahead.

He is a Democrat hack.

Unlikely, but I do want to see pictures, even pictures of her dancing in garish costumes, on location in Asia, with other American officials, for the next week.  And if by chance she hops in an SR71 and crashes the convention to become the Veep, she will be so worn-out and haggard that whatever shock value Obama gets will not be what was intended.  Then again,  the way things have been blowing back on him, VP Hillary may be exactly what Barry is plotting.  Then again, again, the whole thing really falls apart when Mooch and ValJar are factored in.

That's why the polls are so close.  We are lucky to win any elections.  I don't have much confidence for 2012.
