Your status of the Republican Party metaphor of the day:

Mitt Romney celebrated his 66th birthday with a fluffernutter cupcake and a festive paper hat today in surroundings that were certainly more bleak than he once would have hoped.

His loyal son Tagg posted a photo of his father on Instagram where the elder Mr Romney was seen sitting in a non-descript board room while wearing a suit and blue tie and smiling as he looks on at a batch of peanut butter and marshmallow cupcakes.

As if that weren't enough, a can of Diet Coke and a boxed sandwich are also on the table, topping off the lackluster birthday lunch.

Of course not.  Just like he had nothing to do with releasing thousands of illegals from detention centers,    and nothing to do with selling guns to Mexican cartels,   and nothing to do with abandoning our people in Benghazi,      and nothing to do with anything else in his entire administration.   Which gives a whole new meaning to the term "Administration,"    really,     in that he doesn't appear to    administer a g-ddamned thing.

24 The only thing I see wrong with the cop/dog story (absent any other info) is that she walked away without identifying herself. Is there something wrong with drawing a weapon if you are approached by a seemingly aggressive dog? Or is she supposed to go hand to paws (and jaws)? I realize that she is a cop, and that has become a mortal sin here, but not every dog is a cute fluffy sweet animal. I also realize that in Massachusetts, a law abiding citizen doesn't have that option, and it sucks, but that doesn't change the bottom line that I would rather shoot a charging animal than hit it with my fists.

So she drew her weapon- keeping it pointed at the ground- and told the dog owners to comply with the law (that is: leash their dogs). Would someone be throwing a fit if the dogs which were "playing" had been Pit Bulls? Rottweilers? Sorry, I'm with her: if I'm out walking my dog (or walking alone) and a large dog comes up and I think it's aggressive, I get to defend myself. Given how fast an angry large dog can incapacitate someone, if I had a gun I'd want it already out, too. Maybe it would have been different if she'd pointed the gun at someone, but she didn't.

Unfortunately, those docs are not likely to "move the needle" much in terms of either healthcare expenditures (certain to skyrocket in the early phases of O-care), or in changing the model of healthcare delivery.  Both hospitals and state medical boards will bring pressure to bear ('credentialing' in the case of hospitals and 'medical licensure' in the case of state boards) that will limit their ability to deliver that type of care.   Concierge medicine or "direct primary care" models are a form of cherry-picking- with limited applicability to most people's financial and health needs.  A concierge doc might be fine at ingrown toenails, but isn't gonna take care of your heart attack without hospital privileges and access to specialists.

If she broke the law, she broke the law and should be punished for it. I'm not denying that. However, if it was against the law for her to do so, I think that's dumb.

Responding to the previous thread:

From Chemjeff:

another O/T: I'm thinking about buying a Roku. any Roku-owning morons here care to offer an opinion pro/con?

I like it...it's tiny, it can play full 1080p content. Problems with it, it tends to overheat, even if placed to allow for maximum ventilation. I fixed mine by tearing it open, and placing a couple of heat sinks on the larger chips with thermal epoxy, and adding a small fan.

It works with just about every online provider I tried, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu....along with a bunch of lesser known outfits. If you have a really good internet connection, 1080P is not a problem at all...but if you tend to lag out randomly, it's best you stick with lower resolutions.

I haven't used mine in a while, (after losing my job, I let all my various subscriptions lapse), but I think I'll pick up Amazon Prime, and Netflix again....those were two of the best providers, IMO.

Frank: Wait, I'm a little confused here. What's a twink? Dennis: A twink is small and slender, like Mac. Mac: Oh no, I'm too muscular, I would be a bear. Dennis: Ohh don't think so bro. Not hairy enough. Frank: Smooth. I would be a bear. Dennis: No no, see I don't think you'd be a bear either. As a matter of fact I don't know what you would be because you're definitely not a twink. Frank: I'd be a top, that's for sure. Mac: Can a twink be a top, or is that reserved for bears? Dennis: I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth, but I think more often than not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms. Frank: What's a power bottom? Mac: A power bottom is a bottom that is capable of receiving an enormous amount of power. Dennis: Actually Mac, you got it backwards. See a power bottom's actually generating all the power by doing most of the work. Frank: Does the power have to do with the size or the strength of the bottom? Mac: Now Dennis, I've heard that speed has something to do with it. Dennis: Speed has everything to do with it. You see the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply. Speed's the name of the game.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I seem to remember three things which make the case stick out... 1. The owners of the dogs were a white supremacist couple 2. There were allegations made that the female of that couple was having relations with the dog 3. They got their lawyers to do the most illogical defense I'd ever heard by playing up that the victim was a lesbian and that she did something to provoke the dogs.

Don't get me wrong.  I have been in favor of more open competition in medicine and market-based solutions from the get-go.  The problem is that the boat has already sailed, and there's no getting the horse back in the barn once he's seen Paree (or some other mixed metaphor to that effect).  The inertia is taking us inexorably in the other direction.  Without a filibuster proof majority in the Senate and an R in the White House there is no way in hell O-care will be repealed.  So, look for the little exceptions and take advantage while you can, but don't expect it to go to a free market system.

We hooked up Netflix, Amazon Instant Video (free movies and TV with Amazon Prime), Vudu, and numerous other channels to it. If you have subscription-based services, it's perfect for it. If you have any interest in a cloud-based movie collection, seriously consider Vudu. You can use your computer with DVDs and Blu-Rays to get digital copies in Ultraviolet between $2 and $5 a pop, which can be accessed on any authorized Ultraviolet service such as Vudu, Flixster, CinemaNow, etc., on a TV set, computer, or mobile device. CinemaNow and Flixster also offer disc-to-digital, but Flixster's is more expensive and CinemaNow is run in a very half-assed way compared to Vudu. If you want free channels, there are some on there like Pandora radio and Crackle which are good. Crackle is a Sony media channel that will let you watch a large catalog of movies and TV for free, but you have to watch a commercial about every eight minutes. It's like watching a basic cable movie channel except that the movies aren't altered for content.

That assailant is someone who chose to do you harm.

RIYADH – US Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has shown interest in examining the Saudi Munasaha (Counseling) counter-terrorism program so as to apply it in the United States.

“Too many of our young people are disaffected and attracted to violent ideologies and so we want to work with our Saudi allies and examine the program and see how we might apply that in the United States,” he told a press conference at the US Embassy here Sunday.

“I’m more concerned about the threat from inside the US and people who turn to violent extremism,” he said, underscoring the importance of cooperation with the Saudi government to ensure the safety of both nations.

“We must work together, as equal partners, with a shared commitment to pursuing a world with more opportunity and less violence.”

The press conference was held as part of HolderÂ’s diplomatic visit to the Kingdom.

Sorry, I said February.  I read it in February...the sale wasn't in February.

Here's a piece closer to the actual sale date, which was late 2011.

278 The NYT article on Detroit is okay but it leaves out the most important fact: WHY the jobs "left Detroit". They keep acting like these jobs just go up and moved away for some unknown reason.  No. It was the high wages based on nothing except political graft and power. The auto companies who survived moved to RTW states and did well, and so did their workers.

Admit it, NYT, Big Union is just bad.
