USA v. Canada
Canada Wins 3-2 in Overtime

— DrewM

Okay, so it’s not 1980 v. The Red Army but this is as big as international hockey competition gets.

The US has been the surprise team of this tournament going 5-0 to this point and securing the number one seed. The team has pretty much been what GM Brian Burke and Coach Ron Wilson built it to be, big and strong, timely scoring, solid defense (which has gotten better as the games have gone on) and outstanding beyond belief goal tending. 60 more minutes of that and the US will have gold.

I stand by my thought following the Canada-Slovakia game…the 1st goal today is going to be big. Canada has to be a little tight coming out with the pressure of expectations, the home crowd and last Sunday's loss. Add all that to a piss poor 3rd period against Slovakia that almost cost them their shot at gold and this could be a fragile team. Get the first goal against them and the US might be able to put them away. Conversely, the US hasn't trailed all tourney. If Canada scores first, the building will go nuts and the US will have to make a comeback. I think the US is better suited to survive falling behind but I’d prefer they didn’t.

As I said, this isn’t 1980 and these aren’t the Soviets but in some ways today’s game is going to be nastier…fights between friends and family always are. Given that, here’s what I want the US to keep in mind….

If you prefer something a little more traditional, try this.

Bottom line...kick there ass this afternoon and buy ‘em a beer tonight.

If you missed it, check out the connection between Team USA and some very special American Heroes. In that vein, where it counts, Canada and the USA are on the same team (via Lex).

Now on to tmi3rd’s breakdown of the game.
So it's finally here.

One team, everyone expects to win. The other team, everyone figured would be okay but not great.

The roles are a bit reversed- the US is undefeated and quickly found its chemistry in the preliminary round. Canada, on the other hand, stumbled in the first round, and decided to change goaltenders midstream.

So what are we going to see? First of all, this will be a different Canada team than the one in the preliminary round. Here are the line combinations for Canada:

Line 1: Jarome Iginla- Sidney Crosby- Eric Staal
Line 2: Dany Heatley- Joe Thornton- Patrick Marleau
Line 3: Brenden Morrow- Ryan Getzlaf- Corey Perry
Line 4: Rick Nash- Jonathan Toews- Mike Richards
Patrice Bergeron is the 13th forward, primarily a penalty killer.

Morrow has come on of late, becoming a big body in front of the net on the Canadian power play. Iginla has benefited from being centered by Crosby, and Staal had a big goal against the US. The second line (known as the Sharks line- they all play for San Jose) has been the most consistently dangerous. The fourth line has a lot of scoring punch as well, and they definitely have better chemistry and flow than they did in the preliminary round.

The Canadian defense has been solid and chipped in a few timely goals as well. Scott Niedermayer and Shea Weber are the top Canadian defense pairing, followed by Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith (they play together in Chicago), and are rounded out by Chris Pronger and Drew Doughty. Dan Boyle is the 7th defenseman.

The one question mark for the Canadians is their goaltending, and that has arguably let them down in these Olympics. Martin Brodeur made some crucial errors against the US that cost him his spot, to be replaced by Roberto Luongo. Luongo has made some critical saves, but the bottom line is that against solid opposition, Canada has not kept pucks out of their own net. Against a Russian team in disarray, Luongo was beaten high to the glove side (usually a strong side for goalies) twice, and gave up a stoppable breakaway shot for the third Russian goal. Against Slovakia, they gave up two late goals before a Pavol Demitra shot hit the crossbar late.

Meanwhile, the US has been steady- they got their lines together against Canada, and their biggest tests to date came against Switzerland (twice) and Canada.

Line 1: Zach Parise- Paul Stastny- Jamie Langenbrunner
Line 2: Patrick Kane- Ryan Kesler- Bobby Ryan
Line 3: Ryan Malone- Joe Pavelski- Phil Kessel
Line 4: David Backes- Chris Drury- Dustin Brown
Ryan Callahan is the 13th forward.

These lines have been solid and consistent. The early issues were more related to defensive responsibility, and those seem largely to have been coached into form. Adding size to the first line with Langenbrunner definitely helped, although they haven't scored quite as readily as might have been preferred. The most scoring punch has come from the second and third line.

The defensive pairings have been Brian Rafalski and Ryan Suter as the first, Erik and Jack Johnson as the second, and Tim Gleason and Brooks Orpik as the third. The seventh defenseman is Ryan Whitney. Rafalski has been one of the highest-scoring players in these Olympics, and the US defense has quietly been very consistent, giving up six goals over five games. Of course, Canada had the most goals against them with three.

And, finally, Ryan Miller has carried the US in net. He's arguably been the best player in the tournament, and that will need to continue today. He's given up five goals over five games (the goal by Finland came against Tim Thomas), and stopped over forty shots against Canada.

Today's game will largely be dictated by who scores first. The team to score first has won all but two of the games in these Olympics. Also, the US has not trailed in any game in these Olympics. One would not wish to count on that today

The first ten minutes of the game will be crucial- anything the US can do to take the crowd out of the game will greatly affect the outcome. The quick goal against Canada took the crowd out of the game early a week ago, and that was a key to the game.

The Canadian offense has been predicated on traffic in front of the net, much like the US. Clearing out the center in front of the net- giving Ryan Miller clear view of the puck- will be a key defensively, and the same applies for Canada with Luongo.

Finally, there are always interesting matchups to watch- mine is Patrick Kane versus Roberto Luongo. Kane had six goals for Chicago against Vancouver's Luongo last year in the playoffs. Luongo does not have a large resume of huge games on his resume- this will either cement him as one of the great Canadian goaltenders or relegate him to to the ranks of Canadian also-rans.

Not even going to hazard a prediction on this one- I'm no good at that when I'm emotionally involved. Let's just say that I'd like to see Canada end their gold medal run in these Olympics at 13.

Oh and kudos to Brad Dayspring, spokesman for House Minority Whip (and noted Jew) Eric Cantor for correctly predicting Team USA's run to the gold.

When you throw the puck in from your side of the red line into the other end and it doesn't get touched by anyone, and a defensive player can't get to it.

In the Olympics, there is 'no touch' icing. Normally a defensive player (not the goalie) has to touch it before an offensive player

Clearing the puck all the way from your zone to behind the opponent's net.

Exceptions 1.  If the goalie has to stop it, it's a shot on net.  2.  If your team has a penalty you can clear it at will.

Lookin' good to me right now.  I like the deliberate nature of their attack.

They are the visiting team.  T

hey need to play as such and save their reserves for counterpunching the inevitable Canadian assaults.

Once they get the Canadian D into the rythm of the deliberate Offense, they can start jabbing and counterpunching.

This will get better and better as we draw down their tanks.

I complained about this the other day. Obviously all those single mothers have the time and money to raise an olympic champion.

What's that? Father worked and bankrolled the entire operation while Mother stayed home and took the kiddie to the events? That can't be right!

133 Ace, if you watch the US set up going into the Canadian zone, they're sending one guy. If you watch Canada on the attack, they're sending two. We call the US attack a 1-2-2 attack; we call Canada's attack a 2-1-2. One of the other things about the Canadian attack is that the one guy who hangs back (a forward) drops straight back to clog up the middle if they turn the puck over.

Guy is scary when he's surrounded with complimentary talent.

I am worried that Marleau and Getzlaf (aka- 'Dickslap') are laying up right now...those guys are game makers.

On the Plus side.  Miller looks real good.

Luongo is still beatable on the high glove side and between his stick and his shoulder.  Kane has the fastest roof shot in the league right now.

We need to get in Lou's kitchen and knock him around a little bit. Those Beaver get cagey when you smack'em around just so.

All in all, I am happy to be where we are and I am crankin' the Slayer in the Locker Room and preparing a Patton-esque speach for the next intermission!

145 Ace,

Typically, if you're up against a team that counterattacks well (like Canada), it's supposed to keep more people back to defend. Especially when you have good team speed (like the US), it can be very effective setting up your own counterattack.

The problem is that a couple of the US wingers aren't skating aggressively enough into Canadian ice to help with the attack, and Canada's able to get free of the smaller Americans to skate up ice quicker.

I am in a good place.

I have confidence that our Boys are where they expected to be after 2.

We need to keep up a modicum of discipline while we pour it on with increasing intensity.

D men - Pinch responsibly.

O men - Keep your head on a swivel.  Keep your eyes open.  Cover your D.  Support the Puck.

Put the Fuckin' Puck on the Net and Follow it.

Also, I'd Roll Kaner to the point on the Power Play.  I wouldn't post him there.  But I'd swap Rafalski onto the Half-Boards and give Kaner more space to work his magic.  He can thread the puck through traffic at will.

I fear Nash and Dickslap.  I fear Niedermeyer.  He's won absolutely everything there is to win in Hockey.  He might fuck baby goats, but he knows how to bring home the mutton.

Lou is the weakest link. He can cough it up, and in a hurry.  We need to keep crowding him and getting those tumbling wristers moving towards the net.

Syd is a wallflower, today.  One good hit.  Let's keep him feeling young and intimidated...

Anyway, I think you need to lighten up. I actually love Canadians because they're always friendly and contribute a lot to the my local economy. And they've always been our allies...so, we joke about Canada, but I've always thought of it as light-hearted ribbing.

a tumbling wrister or a 2/3 speed point shot.

Look for a plumber like Pavelski or Rufalski to be the shooter.

I fear Niedermeyer's 2/3 shot/pass from the point.  In 4 on 4 Hockeh he is dangerous.

818 "The word is that the Americans refused to shake hands after the game?  Anyone know anything about this?"

God I hope not: I came here to say something nice and respectful about the American team.

Which I'll continue with as that is as yet unconfirmed.

The tournament sure worked in one sense: It picked the best two teams to be on the ice for the final. The Americans played with great heart and motivation (going in I thought they were extremely well lead and motivated) whereas, if you know anything about hockey, the Canadian team just rocked at passing.

Without their exceptional passing game, they'd never have made it to the final nor won today.

819 "Not that it would surprise me to hear CTV would take a shot at Americans, but it will really piss me off if they fabricated it."

There's no way in hell CTV would do any such thing. As far as networks go, it's mainly a good one. Besides, the story that Canada beat an awesome team of great sports, brothers in arms but not on the ice (as the sign made by Canadian Forces members stationed in Afghanistan said) is a lot better and more palatable to take for Canadians than we beat a bunch of immature a-holes.

So, I'm hoping it is indeed untrue. If it's true, well, bad sportsmanship.

That was my impression.

I saw the Americans when they received their medals, for example, stoic and hardly exuberant, but polite to the people giving them the medals.

So I'm inclined to say bullshit too and that the American team behaved as well after the game as they played during it, unless someone can provide a reference for it.

I think it's that they lost. I mean as professional athletes, they're obviously not going to mentally prepare themselves to feel joy at coming in second.

For a guy who is an amateur and gets a silver, and is the second best in the world, sure that's a big deal. But for professional athletes who expect to and are paid to win, it's probably as much of a letdown as anything.

There's a saying, you win Gold and Bronze but lose the Silver.

I think some of them may appreciate what they accomplished later but in that moment most of them looked shell shocked and like they would have thrown the medals away if they could have.

They were just destroyed emotionally. It's the great thing about sports at every level...the highs and the lows. It's all about scoreboard, it's not something you can spin and there are no 'moral victories', just real ones and losses.

844 That's one of the reasons I think confidence is overrated, DrewM. I'll take a person who has passion for what they're doing any day.

It's never one or the other. That's another great thing about sports, you never know what combination of skill, mentality, emotions, etc will carry the day. And there's no formula, sometimes it's one set and the next day the next.

As for this match up, it's hard to look at the US players as upstarts given their success at the NHL level but almost no one thought they'd get this far. There's only one guy on the US who people thought was good enough to crack the Canadian line up and that was Zach Pariese. He would have been a 3rd line guy at best on Canada and for the US he was number 1.

Now coming out, Team Canada would have loved to have had Ryan Miller in goal. The Canuks won in spite of Marty and Bobby Lou, not because of them.

They should have played Fleury. He has been to two cup finals and won a cup in the past two years. Whereas Luongo and Brodeur have 1 cups between them in their long careers. It doesn't matter now, but I think they probably would have won the first USA Canada game had Marc Andre played.

Brodeur has three cups, and whether you think of him as a system goalie or not, you've got to accept the #1 job was his to lose.

I really felt for Ryan Miller, who did an amazing job..  Really, all the goals scored today were not really netminder errors, just oddball shots.  Miller really did a fantastic job, this easily could have gone the other way.   That said, Scott Nedermeier probably should not worry about buying drinks in Canada for a year or two.

qwerty1, well I never lived in a small town.  My dad was RCAF and we lived on CFBs a lot.  He retired at Penhold, the one with the infamous Diefenbunker that the Hells Angels tried to buy.  32 years in by 1972, Dad joined the Airforce in 1940.  We moved to C-Town from Penhold.  I loved Calgary and was a volunteer at the Stampede many of my teen years.

Went to High School at Sir Winston Churchill.  Excellent group of people there.  Many of us keep in touch to this day.

MRC after that, some SAIT.  I've owned my own business since the mid '90s.  We're doing really well.  Oil company consultants.  Own my 2200 sq ft house outright,  zero debt, stock portfolio gained 17% overall in 2009.

My stock analyst was an Obama supporter.  I said to him,  "Everything that Obama says or does, I'll bet against him and win."  He had to eat crow last week when the wife and I went in and invested again to offset our taxes.  I've feel for the guy, though.  He's come down with Crone's disease, which is rare for men.  I think it's stress for having to face a lot of losses and bad decisions.  Last year I said we should invest in American ammunition companies and he said,  "No,  our firm won't do that because of ethics."  I said screw that, and did it independently.

Energy and Ammo, yeah, that's the ticket.

954 Wow, how bad was the closing ceremony that NBC literally switched it off and went to their sitcom and then went back to it and no one felt they missed anything?  that is unprecedented.  They always show the closing ceremony in its entirety.  What do you guys think prompted such action?

Posted by: curious at March 01, 2010 04:04 AM (p302b)

955 The ceremony ran late, because they had to award medals to the cross-country skiers that raced yesterday afternoon. Apparently, they took down the medal stage at the ski course before the race ended and couldn't do it there. And dammit, it was crucial to start the Marriage Ref on time, you don't mess with Seinfeld.

I don't think there was much left of the closing, anyway, after the giant beavers and flying maple leaves.
