UPN's Censors Let Obscene "Shocker" Gesture Get By On Veronica Mars
— Ace

Two guys talking about getting some action flashed each other the "shocker" hand-gesture, one of the more obscene gestures out there. So obscene, in fact, that a high school had to re-do its entire yearbook when 34 students were pictured flashing it.

I'm not a prude. Seriously, I'm not. I'm just sayin'. If you can't show the almost-cute-and-dainty middle finger, you really oughtn't be able to show this one. It's as crude as they come... except that most people don't know what it means.

CONTENT WARNING on the link above, which describes what the gesture is supposed to mean. It's basically a variation of the British two-finger salute, if you know what that's all about.

1 I have a question, but not about "the shocker."

What in the sweet Elysian fields is "Veronica Mars?"

This isn't one of those faux-unkowing ironic laugh lines. Honest. What or who is Veronica Mars?

Posted by: Knemon at September 29, 2005 03:48 PM (QaHR7)

2 bwahaha, work filter killed that site before I even got to see what it was - then i look again.... rotten.com... go figure

Posted by: fat kid at September 29, 2005 03:50 PM (RCjGK)

3 That's it. I'm done. I'm finding me a nice little island off the Caymans. Preferably one without PEOPLE. Hopefully I can get some supplies air dropped.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle at September 29, 2005 03:52 PM (F+bg5)

4 Are you familiar with the "Hook 'Em Horns" hand signal? The shocker is exactly the same as the University of Houston's hand signal.

Posted by: Hondo at September 29, 2005 04:04 PM (wkn8Y)

5 See it here.

Posted by: Hondo at September 29, 2005 04:06 PM (wkn8Y)

6 That's shocking. I'll have to try it sometime.

Posted by: rdbrewer at September 29, 2005 04:14 PM (lpbk9)

7 Hondo: The middle and index finger are spread apart in the Cougar sign, while placed together in the shocker. Either it's different from the shocker, or it's saying something about the girls in Houston.

8 Thanks ace! Now I have a new cryptically obscene hand gesture to flash in all the family photos, and the saps'll be none the wiser!

Posted by: Sean M. at September 29, 2005 04:26 PM (EHzws)

9 Um, right. Have I told you guys about the new obscene gesture I just inv--um, all the cool kids are doing? It's called the "Wanglewacker" and you just kinda make a fist with your thumb up in the air. (3rd picture down here.) It symbolizes a cigar.

Seriously, is this for real? I'm actually quite relieved I've never heard of it. Is it really an obscene gesture if less than a thousand people know what it's supposed to signify?

Posted by: See-Dub at September 29, 2005 04:29 PM (sF5cK)

10 I don't want to get too analytical but I do wonder why you can see the fingers that are allegedly pooter encased but not the one in the squeakhole. Anybody?

Posted by: BrewFan at September 29, 2005 04:39 PM (EzjjU)

11 BrewFan:

I'll try to answer your question as tactfully as possible: the ring finger is not involved in the actual act.

Does that help?

Posted by: Robb at September 29, 2005 04:45 PM (k8kcm)

12 Robb,

So the ring finger is the 'taint' digit in this methodology?

Posted by: BrewFan at September 29, 2005 04:49 PM (EzjjU)

13 God I hate teenagers. Savages, all of 'em.

Every kid gets locked up in solitary from age 13-19, says I.

Posted by: Russell Wardlow at September 29, 2005 05:50 PM (aMYqu)

14 I had a Beavis/Butthead moment reading Brewfan's assertion that he didn't want to get too anal-itical.

Sorry.

Posted by: Lipstick at September 29, 2005 06:00 PM (8Rhn0)

15 Yes, BrewFan, which is why it's not extended.

Otherwise, you get....well...an owie the likes of which God has not felt!

Really, this is just such a silly thing. It's a gesture that perhaps a bazillionth of the population of the US actually knows. Those who do either giggle like most of us did when we first discovered the Succubus in the First Edition Monster Manual or they just think it's the cool thing to do (like those girls in the photo on the linked article. What...think they're lesbians?).

Posted by: Jimmie at September 29, 2005 06:31 PM (GDgGM)

16 The shocker is more well know than most of you seem to think. Virtually any teenager today knows what it means. Collegehumor.com has an entire section of pictures of college students making the hand sign. My high school wasn't able to release a class picture because people were making the shocker (my sister was asked to tell the principal of the school what it meant).

Posted by: tomp at September 29, 2005 06:59 PM (zvMXN)

17 It's well known with young people, but not with adults. Part of the reason I guess it got by the UPN censors... or else they just didn't think that any adults would be watching and note it.

Posted by: ace at September 29, 2005 07:27 PM (hBAty)

18 Jimmie,

It's well known. They put it in the show *because* it's well known.

Posted by: ace at September 29, 2005 07:28 PM (hBAty)

19 Ace... uh... do you pick up high school girls in your spare time?

Posted by: someone at September 29, 2005 07:38 PM (6Swlb)

20 Not one of you is going to ask what the hell I was doing watching Veronica Mars?

Posted by: ace at September 29, 2005 07:55 PM (hBAty)

21 ace: I don't know who Veronica Mars is.

Posted by: digitalbrownshirt at September 29, 2005 08:13 PM (ipjUv)

22 Not one of you is going to ask what the hell I was doing watching Veronica Mars?

Uh, it didn't really occur to me since I was watching it too. I didn't catch the gesture, though. I guess I was too preoccupied with Charisma Carpenter flouncing around in a bikini.

Mmmmmmmm...

Posted by: Sean M. at September 29, 2005 08:29 PM (EHzws)

23 It is really that well-known?

It's not that I doubt, but when the older folks don't seem to know anything at all about it, I just wonder how famous it really is.

It just seems a tempest in a teapot to me.

Besides, if you want it to really be a "shocker", use the thumb instead of the pinky finger.

29 Okay, now I know what it's called, anyway. I never knew it had a name and I certainly would never have thought of calling it The Shocker.

I think at my house this would probably be called Knock That Right the Fuck Off. Or Don't Even Dream About It You Freak Bastard, but then it might get confused with some other stuff that didn't go over real well.

We homeschool are kids until they get to junior high. If they aren't programmed right by then, they never will be.

...at which point they learn about what the rest of us call "a homophone." For you homeschoolers, that's not the time you spend on the cell, talking about the exploits of Rory and Lorelai.

The student section of UGA's Sanford Stadium is all about "The Shocker," this year, for some reason...
