The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

It's not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what's required. Sir Winston Churchill

Quote II

The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic, and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary, it makes them, for the most part, humble, tolerant, and kind. Failure makes people cruel and bitter. W. Somerset Maugham

Quote III

A fishing rod is a stick with a hook at one end and a fool at the other.
Samuel Johnson

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton Explains how the U.S.A. can get out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Here it is. It is only five pages long, but like instant coffee, it can be readily expanded to a comprehensive, hundred-page playbook if the administration were to decide to leave the Iran agreement. There is no need to wait for the next certification deadline in October. Trump can and should free America from this execrable deal at the earliest opportunity.

I offer the paper now as a public service, since staff changes at the White House have made presenting it to President Trump impossible. Although he was once kind enough to tell me "come in and see me any time," those days are now over.

If the president is never to see this option, so be it. But let it never be said that the option didn't exist.

ICYMI, Mark Steyn's latest observations. The mood music of Mohammed.

No, sir. It shows us how easily a once civilized people get used to pure evil - at first declining to notice it, to let it catch your eye, and then accommodating it and incubating it. You'll be surprised how quickly such an attitude becomes universally understood, so that the few who insist on noticing, on not accommodating it become the real problem. See no evil, hear no cries of the victims, speak no forbidden thought of the motivations behind today's terror attack, and tomorrow's, and the day after...

So female shoppers in Finland get stabbed by murderous Muslims, and Buckingham Palace is in lockdown because of a man from Luton. Lie back and think of a lost England - and a lost Europe.

A dead human body and a dead bear. What's the connection? The curious case of Pablo Eskobear-The Cocaine Bear.

On September 11, 1985 an elderly Kentucky man named Fred Myers awoke to find a dead man lying on his driveway. If this wasn’t odd enough, the deceased individual was wearing a bulletproof vest, Gucci loafers, night vision goggles, a large satchel, and a parachute. When the police arrived and investigated further, they found he also had on his person two handguns, a couple of knives, $4,500 in cash, ropes, and food.

So what was in the satchel? About $15 million worth of cocaine…..........

................
About three months after Thornton’s demise, Cocaine Bear was discovered dead in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia- the same forest where Thornton’s plane (a Cessna 404 which he’d put on autopilot and leapt out of) had crashed. The 175lb black bear was found surrounded by 40 empty packages that had been torn open, all of which contained traces of cocaine.

The alarmrists will use Hurricane Harvey and Houston flooding for their global warming angle. But the Houston flooding is Not a sign of climate change.

There have been many flood disasters in the Houston area, even dating to the mid-1800s when the population was very low. In December of 1935 a massive flood occurred in the downtown area as the water level height measured at Buffalo Bayou in Houston topped out at 54.4 feet.

The malcontents on the Cleveland Browns are not worthy to hold the jock strap of Jim Brown.

Later that week, in an interview, Jim Brown said that players should keep their profession and their activism separate. Football players are paid well, and they should respect their country when they are on-camera or in a game, representing their employer, Brown said:

“If you’re a football player, play football. If you’re gonna be a real activist, use your money, use your notoriety.”

From an illegal drug to a FDA approved drug, Ecstasy is now approved for PTSD.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), also known as ecstasy, is a “breakthrough therapy” in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thanks to this designation, the drug could have a faster path to pharmaceutical approval.

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) announced the FDA’s ruling last week, revealing that they can now move forward on two of their upcoming “Phase 3” trials. The goal of these trials is to determine how effectively the drug can be used to treat those suffering from PTSD. The trials will include 200 to 300 participants, and the first trial will begin to accept subjects in 2018.

A heart warming story. Is there hope for California?

From our friend, CaliGirl.

I'd like to share this story with everyone on the ONT. I see how everyone thinks CA is lost. This is my area. We are proud Americans. (I still say we are Bakersfield west.).

This story fills me with pride, we are not all lost here.

The ONT hopes so, but......we aren't holding our breath.

There is a war against free speech and the right to assemble. It is time to fight it.

The authorities are not going to do it. The choice is simple. Either we have a First Amendment. Or we don’t. If mobs of violent leftists with the complicity of leftist authorities can shut down any protest or speaker they don’t like, then we no longer have a Bill of Rights. All that’s left is leftist tyranny.

In the sixties, Governor Reagan sent in the National Guard to stop the violence at Berkeley. Governor Brown won’t do it. It’s up to President Trump to act.

And there’s precedent.

Ivanka Trump, under attack by despicable "Americans". Hate can't take a break.

Ivanka Trump took the innocuous step of tweeting her support for first responders and the brave heroes who took action during Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath, but she found out that even such noble sentiments will be condemned in the currently fractious political environment.

This course should not only be taught in college but in high school as well. Hell grade school as well.

A cohort within the University of Colorado’s Board of Regents is attempting to introduce a “civic literacy” requirement to teach students about the Constitution and “civil discourse.”

According to The Daily Camera, five regents gathered during the board’s University Affairs Committee meeting to discuss the possible addition, which, if approved, would become a requirement in the university’s core curriculum.

"How can you debate free speech if you don’t know much about the constitution?" Tweet This

Notably, of the five backing the initiative, at least two are registered Democrats, including Regent Steve Ludwig, who told The Camera that he’s convinced many graduates do not have the civic literacy that ought be expected of them.

Can you pass this smell test?

Each of our senses gives us a unique view of our world. Our visual system detects parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, revealing movement, brightness and color, but also a smile or a tear. Our auditory system registers changes in pressure, but also allows us to hear the crash of ocean waves or the smoky contralto of Billie Holiday. To appreciate the flavor of food and drink, recognize the perfume of the first spring flowers or detect the danger of a gas leak, we rely upon our olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) systems.

Everything you wanted to know about Chuck Norris and the internet meme.

Like most memes, Chuck Norris Facts were a happy accident. Another actor—not Chuck Norris—was the impetus, Ian Spector, the godfather of the Norris facts, told the Daily Dot.

“Believe it or not, the site began in 2005 with Vin Diesel Facts,” he said over email.

In 2005, The Pacifier, a film in which Diesel played an Elite Navy SEAL tasked with caring for children, became a box office success, grossing over $200 million in U.S. movie theaters. Spector frequented the forums on SomethingAwful.com and became engrossed with a conversation about the country’s love/hate relationship with the bald action bro.

One by one, Trump continues to lose staff. The resignation letter of Dr. Sebastian Gorka.

Your presidency will prove to be one of the most significant events in modern American politics. November the 8th was the result of decades during which the political and media elites felt that they knew better than the people who elect them into office. They do not, and the MAGA platform allowed their voices finally to be heard.

Regrettably, outside of yourself, the individuals who most embodied and represented the policies that will “Make America Great Again,” have been internally countered, systematically removed, or undermined in recent months. This was made patently obvious as I read the text of your speech on Afghanistan this week.

The fact that those who drafted and approved the speech removed any mention of “radical Islam” or “radical Islamic terrorism” proves that a crucial element of your presidential campaign has been lost.

I just got to finish ace's novella, below, and I would have talked about fishing had I been in the thread. You certainly don't have control over what happens, but you have active involvement. You choose a time and place where you think it likely that fish will be present and hungry. You hone your skill so that you can put a dry fly upstream of the lie in a way that doesn't spook the fish and drifts down his feeding lane in a natural fashion. You don't control events because the fish have quite some say in it, but you can absorb yourself in the practical and metaphysical details of the sport. So, uh, fuck that guy in particular.

Houston is basically the Western edge of the Louisiana Swamps. 48 in. annual rainfall average. It's humid as hell, most the year round. Heat and humidity, and in summertime, you've usually got to chew the air here before you breathe it. Certainly, Texas dries out a lot by time you get to San Antonio or Austin, but those are still mostly green spaces. It's when you get West of the San Antonio & Austin longitude, that things really begin to dry out. And it's seldom dry here at Casa Sunk New Dawn. *pours bourbon* Cheers! Posted by: T Those people are leaving every day. California used to be a Republican /conservative state. A growing and vibrant economy, based on manufacturing, agriculture, etc. The federal government under wrote a lot of big irrigation projects, bringing water to places and made it rich. A lot of California money, too. There are still "sane" people in California, but fewer every year. They're either dying or leaving. Victor Hanson wrote his book "Mexifornia" some years ago, and nothing has really happened to change that trend. California becomes Mexico North in another generation, and really, nothing can stop it now. With all the attendant political corruption and crime. If you think Jerry Brown is stupid and corrupt, watch who follows him. There will be some millions of rich people in California and it will be "great" for them (if you work for Google, Apple, big tech firms, in entertainment), but the cities and much of the state will be a festering barrio of poor people. Cleaning other people's houses, cutting their grass, painting their houses.

Richard III was stripped naked after he was killed on Bosworth Field, tied over a horse (legs on one side, arms on the other), and his right buttock was struck with substantial force (evidence from the condition of his pelvic bones). 288 Hey everybody. News about me: I have to report for jury service here in good ol' LA County tomorrow morning at 8:30am. (My original jury assignment, the first one I've had in a few years, was a few weeks ago. I could have just called in all week like I've done before, but I *completely forgot* about doing so until it was too late, so LA County's first-line 'penalty' is that they make you *come in* to your assigned courthouse for *one* full day, then if you don't get called, you're done. Seems to me almost like the penalty of reporting for one day is easier than the original requirement, of calling the court the night before, *five* times to see if you've been called for service.) Anyway: most of you may recall, I just recently got a job, finally. I'm working in a small law office. :-) So my boss (an attorney) not only said it's cool for me to have the day off, but advised: if I get considered for a jury, I should just find out what the charge is, and say I've been a victim of that crime. She related the story that a few years ago, she was a candidate for jury service on a child molestation case. Another candidate tearfully said they couldn't stay on the case because they were molested as a child, and was excused. Well next thing you know... *five other people* said the exact same thing. "Oh, yeah, uh, I was molested too! It was horrible!!!" Anyway. Thought I'd pass on the advice. Don't think I will have to serve.

Don't agree there's national insanity. It's quite concentrated - no sign at all that it's spread beyond the press, pop culture, academia (i.e. the usual suspects) and the corrupted ramparts (CEOs, GOPe elected "leaders"). It's just that it's become incredibly ugly, and darker, more totalitarian, and much more un-American. And I can't imagine being hysterical due to being "plugged in" all the time. But that may be due to near-total avoidance of "social media", and a background of extensive direct experience in many topics that are just politics fodder for most.

First, the guy drops 40 packages of cocaine (later found by bear).
Then he set the autopilot on the plane.
Then he jumps out with the rest of the cocaine, forgets to deploy his chute and dies.

But, what was the plan for the plane? He meant for the plane to just fly until it ran out of fuel and crash? Surely throwing planes away cuts into the profitability of cocaine trafficking. Not to mention drawing the attention of the feds when empty planes fall out of the sky and do whatever damage on the ground.

368 Last jury duty call I had turned out well, and funny. Tragically picked to be one of the 12. Judge and counsel for both sides are doing their thing. #1 (a UC econ professor, to my amazement), when asked what he knew about medical malpractice cases, said "well I know there's a whole industry built around them" (chuckles from many, horrified look from the truly odd and clueless judge, snicker from defense counsel, quick ticket to dismissal). After a few other jurors corrected the senior defense counsel, apparently a courthouse fixture but sort of an idiot, judge asked me something and I volunteered that I'd never thought jury trials were appropriate for such cases. He made the mistake of asking me why, and my answer brought more chuckles from the sharper jurors and alternates, more horrified expressions from the judge, and my own ticket to dismissal. There was lots of other weirdness and amateurism on display by judge and lawyers. As I passed the bailiff on the way out I snarked "what the hell is going on here today?" and he rolled his eyes and said "don't ask me".

I've got plywood walls in the garage, but open joists and rafters to the underside of the roof-deck itself. Right now, I've got the mower, power washer, chain saw, miter saw stand and several other major tools hanging by hooks from said joists. Years ago though, I'd built heavy duty shelving all around the garage at about the 7 ft. level. (the garage's joists are slightly higher than 9 ft. above the slab.) I'm talking shelves that'll hold me doing pullups. That's where all of the power hand tools are. Some other stuff is hanging from pegboard and hardware hooks attached to the plywood walls. I've got more tools stuffed into a one-car garage than you might imagine. So, I might just keep some of those joist hooks in service. Really opens up the space in there! F***ing around with piss-ant little f***ing grants to local enforcement (the entire arsenal so far unveiled by DOJ in its fight against lawlessness) is not coercion or pressure, it's advertizing how unserious you are. Big bucks need to be at risk. Hard conditions on full cooperation with ICE, written into appropriations bills. Reciprocity needs to be implemented immediately. See how state law enforcement likes the feds ignoring their needs. And select prosecutions. I'm to believe that *no* solid cases for violating aiding/abetting illegal entry laws, or denial of civil rights as in the many cases of un-detained cons being released and committing murder within a week, can be brought by DOJ? Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 29, 2017 11:50 PM (pIW4p) Never lost power, but did lose Comcast for about eight hours on Monday. Had the genset, never had to fire it up. So, I'll hoist it up in the garage with the chain-falls, disconnect the fuel line, open the petcock and drain the fuel back into a new 5 gal. can. What little fuel I'll leave, I'll reconnect the fuel line, start the beast and run it till it coughs and dies from fuel exhaustion. Finally, I'll store it with 1/2 gal. of 100 Octane Avgas on board, with a splash of StaBil. Thing'll start right up on the first crank, be it next week or next year. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX

448 Your Medved update (it's been a while ..... spurred by Bertram's post on the IL governor): Medved was rhapsodizing about "Republican governors" (I think in Dem states), "like IL and MD", and what they were doing. (see Bertram's news bit above for what GOP governors are good for) It got worse, of course. Next guest, didn't listen, was going to share his concern that the GOP was becoming divided between "conservative universalists" (WTF?) and - I'm not kidding - those appealing to *white identitarian" currents in the electorate. It's like "Coast to Coast" for politics. Total idiocy. ace can continue harping on technology and connectedness - I will continue harping on just how f***ing stupid (really no better word for it) the "elites" have become, almost without exception. Medved of course is a histrionic and ridiculous example, but the pattern is clear.

450 I was on a jury for a sexually violent predator that was still locked up after he served him time. I think they have to have trials every few years to keep him locked up. He was his own attorney. He did his own voir dire and I physically recoiled from him. He was a child rapist that broke in to homes and raped little girls. It took us five minutes to decide to keep him in jail or wherever they had him. One of the jurors had a panic attack, they called an ambulance. It was horrible. 461 Reposting from the last thread cuz I love you guys, and why not:

America has NOT gone crazy. We are being gaslighted and Tokyo Rosed.

Imagine for a minute a world where Trump lost: The immediate - and I mean IMMEDIATE - message from the lunatics in the asylum would have been about COMING TOGETHER. MOVING ON. ACCEPTING REALITY. How TIRED everyone was of hearing about damn politics after 15 months of the election.

They would have been on their high, high, high, HIGH horses about it like they were when Trump mentioned he wouldn't accept the election results if he lost. They SHRIEKED. They WAILED. They PRETENDED they were HORRIFIED.

They set the rules of the discussion but the net effect is people are going to slowly check out. The way people are checking out of sports and movies and everything else. Everyone is moving slowly apart and although it sucks, that will be a net good thing because we will be less herd-able. The media is taking advantage of the fact that we all came together for the last 50 or so years to have a shared enjoyed experience of social humanity. Because everything was relatively normal and they had to pretend they were normal because they wanted everyone to believe they were not "biased". Remember those days?

Eight years of Trump is gonna be a long damn time. Think about how much this country changed under Obama. Well, you're gonna have even more change and not all of it for the worse. In fact, much of it will be for the better. As we are driven apart, we are going to be back to living our lives the way *we* want to. Trump is getting government out of our life in a way to an extent the Democrats fear the most. They NEED to be in our life, threatening us constantly. As people get driven away from the lunatic media, their ability to threaten us and make us FEEL threatened is going to lessen. Their noise and shrieking is going to become background noise.

They have ratcheted the meaningless word "racist" up to "Nazi". Where does it go from there? Without their threatening government, there is nowhere. And there will be no threat because Trump will not be supporting or pushing their threat into our lives. Eight years is a long time. Within another year, the sane people of this country will have tuned the media's gaslighting and wailing out. It's a waiting game.

Believe it or not, we are nearing the end of the journalistic and media influence as you have ever known it for your entire life. The first reverberations of an echo are almost as loud as the original sound. Then the wave decreases very fast. We are on the edge of a decrease like you have never seen or experienced or can imagine. Their rending of our nation and their nonstop hysterical tone is going to be their downfall. Serenity is coming. The wailing echo will become background noise, then a whisper, then a nothing.

485 I was reading something about spaying and neutering cats. That's what I do, of course. The toms behave better. But, the problem is, that means they don't breed and pass their genes on. The ones that do are the feral cats, and thus the traits we like the best won't get passed on. That is, the traits that make for the best lovable kitties aren't being passed on, but the traits that make for the best ferals are.

Ours had been out of service for about two years, when it became necessary to use it again. I had drained the tank, and run the carb dry on the last usage. Could *not* get the SOB to crank. Finally pulled the plug wire to see if it was firing. No...it isn't. So, I'm pissed about that (and freezing my butt off), and wondering whether the ON/OFF switch is bad, or the magneto, or whatever. Blip! The power comes back on and I am saved. So the next day I start screwing around with it some more...and something in the back of my mind came to me. Specifically, that I had drained the oil after last use, and not refilled because the oil viscosity is dependent upon ambient temperature (20W at below 20 deg.) I check, and nope, no oil. All of that time, the low oil shut-off had been saving me from myself. Pretty grim when a single cylinder Briggs is smarter than I am.

Not sure it covered every aspect (such as, discharge currently serving t's, or let them attrit out over time). Something like this came up a few weeks ago. If there was an actual order, I'm not believing Mattis would do anything but follow it. Or quite. Not for a second. It's not like SecDefs can quietly defy specific orders from the WH on high-profile issues. Something - or everything - is missing here. Or there's news I don't know about.

Thanks. Trying to say a lot without saying too much and boring everyone, and all that was off the top of my head.

It's just my opinion and observation. Incidentally, I also called the minute the Russia thing lost its ability to influence everyone. It was in the days following the Bernie lunatic shooting up the baseball field.

Russia falling off the radar doesn't look related to the Scalise shooting to normal, sane people. But *I* saw it when it happened... it happened because the media did not modulate their hysterics on Russia even for a minute to pretend to have solace with a shot up dying Congressman. And it was a huge mistake because all they had was smoke and no fire. All they had to do was shut up about it for seven to ten days and pretend to be normal. But they didn't. And suddenly just like that everyone had Russia fatigue.

I told people I know that Russia (which had been at DEFCON 1 for eight months) was going to fizzle within four to six weeks of that day. I was spot on.

I'll give you another. Liberals only have about eight more weeks to go on this Maoist statue and history hunting Cultural Revolution craze. Once the shock of it all wears off, it's going to fade away. Maybe faster because of Harvey. They are taking advantage of the megaphone now but once it disappears, it ain't coming back except for the occasional "conversation" (eg Redskins) they spark up. And yet while it's happening (now), it seems like they've changed everything and it will happen forever and OMG the world is ending. They may TRY to make it happen forever, but their power to make change is going to fade rapidly. Events, and all that. Just my opinion, of course.

Which is, of course, patently ridiculous. but Tammy's point about that day-care hysteria that swept over the place is a good thing to give you pause. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 30, 2017 12:16 AM (8O3HH) Quite the opposite. Those who tried to frame people in those bullshit cases certainly earned the death penalty.

515 CaliGirl, hmm. Probably not the one I worked at then. Tammy, yep. Metropolitan State Hospital is still there, in Norwalk. Still takes up a lot of land too, although decades ago it was much, much bigger. Funny story I learned when I worked there: Across the street at Imperial Highway and Bloomfield Avenue, there's a 1980s-era bunch of apartments/condos. Well, I learned that that plot was where Metro used to have... its cemetery, for deceased patients. (You'd be surprised, and saddened, how many patients over the decades were dumped there by their families, who never returned.) Also according to the guy who trained me, just before they began construction on the condos, they excavated the cemetery and found every body... except for one. (He also joked that he actually lived in those later-built condos, and every night was like Poltergeist.) ;-)

516 Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 30, 2017 12:16 AM (8O3HH) It's why rape can never be capitol crime, unfortunately. Too many bitches lie about it. Not saying kids would AT ALL, but it is very easy to manipulate them. I can think of a few cases where filth was caught in the act of raping or molesting, and the fathers killed them, and I don't think they were even charged. And then there was that lady who was dieing of breast cancer who shot her kid's rapist in court, wan't it?

517 506 CaliGirl we once pulled into the entrance of the state psycho/prison (?) at Atascadero. Looking for the SLO county golf course that's right nearby (and was unmarked - very east coast of them). Kinda figured something was wrong, seeing the 20-foot high fences topped with concertina wire. Landscape guys working out front laughed and gave precise directions to the golf course ("turn off ECR at the Mexican restaurant", I seem to recall). Posted by: rhomboid at August 30, 2017 12:18 AM (v9gSJ) I wouldn't want to visit Atascadero state hospital. I think that's where the rapist was serving his time. I may be wrong. My friend was the court clerk on the case and she told me there are only a handful of those cases and they are the worst of the worst.

520 508: There are federal statutes still on the books for those, but they haven't been tested under the modern precedents. If they tried to do it, it would be challenged, and it looks like it might loose, based on the wording of the cases. They threw out the death penalty for rape some time, '70s maybe. Then states responded by statutes that imposed the death penalty for rape of a victim under 14 (puberty roughly, trying to define). The Supreme Court threw those out in 2008.

If they were all coming from Chicago and the burbs it would be another story, but I get the impression that those folks tend to gravitate either to Indiana or Wisconsin (if they want to stay close to home or keep their current job) or farther afield to places like Florida, Colorado or Arizona (if they are looking for warmer climes or better scenery).

Would bet $10 that the "turn" on antifa originated outside the media itself. A certain political party that was rather obviously trying to exploit perhaps it's most repulsive race-baiting initiative yet (a high bar) has, I believe, quickly concluded that, alas, this too will not serve their tactical political ends. Cannot imagine that Dem Senate incumbents up next year, or challengers for GOP seats, are seeing this madness as likely to help them. In many states, obviously, it is most likely to further hurt them.

569 Warning: Wall-O-Text: Rascals case in brief In the beginning, in 1989, more than 90 children at the Little Rascals Day Care Center in Edenton, North Carolina, accused a total of 20 adults with 429 instances of sexual abuse over a three-year period. It may have all begun with one parent's complaint about punishment given her child. Among the alleged perpetrators: the sheriff and mayor. But prosecutors would charge only Robin Byrum, Darlene Harris, Elizabeth "Betsy" Kelly, Robert "Bob" Kelly, Willard Scott Privott, Shelley Stone and Dawn Wilson – the Edenton 7. Along with sodomy and beatings, allegations included a baby killed with a handgun, a child being hung upside down from a tree and being set on fire and countless other fantastic incidents involving spaceships, hot air balloons, pirate ships and trained sharks. By the time prosecutors dropped the last charges in 1997, Little Rascals had become North Carolina's longest and most costly criminal trial. Prosecutors kept defendants jailed in hopes at least one would turn against their supposed co-conspirators. Remarkably, none did. Another shameful record: Five defendants had to wait longer to face their accusers in court than anyone else in North Carolina history. Between 1991 and 1997, Ofra Bikel produced three extraordinary episodes on the Little Rascals case for the PBS series "Frontline." Although "Innocence Lost" did not deter prosecutors, it exposed their tactics and fostered nationwide skepticism and dismay. With each passing year, the absurdity of the Little Rascals charges has become more obvious. But no admission of error has ever come from prosecutors, police, interviewers or parents. ------------------- See also : Duke Lacrosse team

Posted by: buzzion at August 29, 2017 08:10 PM (cAnNx)

576 Yeah I'm vaguely aware of the stiletto "scandal" - so I suppose that's an example of what I'm getting at. A first lady who is ridiculously hawt and presents no typical rough edges - I'm guessing most of the country is quite fine with her (men lusting, non-moonbat women admiring/envying), while only moonbats of all 34 genders are furiously envious and deranged, as usual. Did "neverTrumpers" *really* join in the idiotic stuff about shoes? I think that whole neverTrump phenomenon is more interesting than ace's tech-driven over-engagement hysteria stuff.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 29, 2017 08:13 PM (v9gSJ)

577 There was one of those cases involved some of the children claiming they were flushed down a toilet to a secret underground room, where awful things were then down. I remember as a little kid imagining being flushed down the commode, wondering where it went. I'd ask. "Septic tank". And then I'd imagine what the septic tank was like. They had a bunch of little kids. They believed they were abused, but weren't telling them, caused they repressed the memories. So they start trying to get the children to tell them. So, they children, using their imaginations, tell them what they want to hear to please the adults nagging them all the time.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 29, 2017 08:13 PM (8O3HH)

578 There were enough of those cases to qualify as mass hysteria. The things you list were the result of the hysteria. I have to respectfully disagree, here, publius. There wasn't any real hysteria about any of that. There were only prosecutors and psychiatrists coming out with accusations day after day. That's not the same thing as "mass hysteria" where it's the people who are pushing the insanity. That's why I said that those prosecutors (and shrinks, mostly) were trying to cause mass hysteria. After the pre-school abuse bullshit the shrinks turned to recovered memory bullshit to carry on their crap. A lot of people had their lives totally destroyed by that (well out of public view and based on the most ridiculous of stories). And also consider that "Satanic cult" that got whipped up around the same time. You had supposed experts on it going all over the country giving lectures to police depts. on it. I don't there's been any documented case of anything like that, other than isolated loons and psychos doing stuff like that. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 30, 2017 01:04 AM (8O3HH) The Satanic cult shit was part and parcel of the pre-school child abuse bullshit. In many of those fake cases they had the kids tell tales of satanic rituals being performed on them (as if these 4 and 5 year olds had any idea what they were saying) in the most outrageous and unbelievable stories. But none of this was "mass hysteria". None of it really made its way into the public very deeply, at all. Mass hysteria ... that's a whole different animal than just a bunch of prosecutors and shrinks using children to try and railroad innocent people in order to make names for themselves. As I said earlier, pretty much all of those involved in these bullshit cases deserved death penalties. Not only for what they actually did but for what they were really attempting to do.

601 Melania is very reserved. I was reading some stuff about her children in Sevnica, and how she got to be a model. She was described as smart, and shy, and reserved. IIRC, her first attempt at a photo shoot didn't go well, but she quickly learned how to act, and made the big time. I can't imagine an introvert (like myself) being a model, but I've read enough to know that it happens.

What was one, "Gina"? I've got the whole thing on DVD. But somehow, I haven't rewatched it. I'm sort of like that with stuff I really like and get into. One and done. Another candidate tearfully said they couldn't stay on the case because they were molested as a child, and was excused. Well next thing you know... *five other people* said the exact same thing. To me it is distinctive, but part of the sexiness is you know the package the voice comes from- that adds to it. Contrast to: Laura Bailey. I was playing the Dead Money DLC for Fallout: New Vegas, and the first time I heard her voice, it was like a caveman inside my head let out a deep growl, picked a thigh bone off the floor of the cave and started to look for heads to bash in. I have never before or since had that... primordial of a reaction to only a ladies' voice. It was striking. I can pick her out of a crowd of voices in any game she acts in. And yes, I have looked for other games she has been in. She has an awesome voice.

Going from grade school to high school, my Dad gave me the talk.

Learn to stand up for yourself. If you don't, no one will.  Got involved with forensic speaking for two years and got the confidence to stand up for myself. I can do all those extrovert things like public speaking, and don't get stressed about them..

I appear to be extroverted. However, if you put a bunch of the clues together (writer, live alone, cat, doesn't attend parties) it becomes pretty clear I'm not.

My guess is that Melania had something she wanted/ needed to do, and adjusted herself accordingly.

RE: Trump... everyone says he is a high extrovert. However...we don't know what he is like behind bars. What one sees is not always how one lives their life behind closed doors.

628 The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic, and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary, it makes them, for the most part, humble, tolerant, and kind. Failure makes people cruel and bitter. W. Somerset Maugham Obviously Maugham was speaking of people who become successful by doing something useful, something of value - meaning not entertainers. It is almost a truism that every successful movie actor or musician becomes an insufferable asshole and ends up destroying himself (and others). Exhibit A: Johnny Depp.

629 I know the whiny lament "if only we had an opposition/second party" is standard fare around here, but ..... Seriously. The way the Dems, in their incompetence and desperation, have lashed themselves to a repellent brand of black racism and race-baiting (BLM and the unbelievably corrupt and idiotic black machine congressmen), it would be child's play to drive them into even weaker/smaller status. For a normal political party. Not that many years ago, either major party baring their electoral necks like this would have resulted in a massacre. Even with, as the Dems had then and even more now, the hyperactive protection of what is less a media than a PR arm of the Dem party. "Lee Atwater's Ghost" is a seldom seen but great nickname around here. Atwater would not have been able to believe his luck if he confronted the Dems of 2017. But instead of hardball, legit confrontation of a party awash in scandals and wildly unpopular and failed policies, we see .... avoidance of votes (omnibus continuing resolutions), and (to my knowledge) zero hardball. Zero. And unbelievable atrocities like the rescue of Thad Cochran. Absent some improbable revolt in the GOP, or an equally improbable wave of rebel primary victories, the astonishing promise of Trump may be just the speed bump some fear, and not a change of direction.

I actually did have travel plans for a long trip overseas, and there was arguably a work/business component to it, and it would have been scotched if I were seated on the jury. But I kinda stretched it a bit. Of course if I'd made it very far in voir dire, I should have been safe, as I'd be obliged to reveal that I actually understood the history and intentions of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act (all several paragraphs of it), and that the sole legitimate cause of action (consumer harm) was a case the DOJ couldn't possibly make to the satisfaction of anyone with the slightest economic literacy and participation in the US economy.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 30, 2017 02:10 AM (v9gSJ) I can understand people not wishing to perform jury duty, but it is a civic responsibility, and if you or I get charged with some dire crime, we would hope to have some thoughtful, responsible citizens in the jury box, and not just the sluggards who were too un-clever to weasel out of it. And Steve's boss, a lawyer, advised him to lie to a court to evade jury duty. A lawyer is supposed to be an officer of the court. That is highly unethical, if not criminal. Is suborning perjury not a crime? Instead of dreaming up ways of avoiding jury duty, we on the right should be discussing ways to avoid be thrown out in voir dire, so that we can be there in the jury box to ensure the guilty get punished, and unethical prosecutors get slapped down.

636 There is this narcissism that demand that I can control all things in my life. It demands that nothing occurs without a reason, so if I can identify the reason I can change it. This kind of thinking goes hand in hand with the rise of aggressive atheism. There is no God only me and I can control every facet of my life. Once you believe that ... it's easy to understand why something like Hillary Clinton losing to Donald Trump can make you feel your life is on 'tilt'.

645 AOP, not to litigate (heh) this, but 2 different animals here. I related two stories in which I wasn't dodging jury duty, but in which I would have surely not been a suitable juror because I rejected the whole process, for medical malpractice, and rejected the inversion of the Sherman Act by DOJ to substitute commercial for consumer harm. Rejecting flawed judicial processes is surely as important a civic duty as serving in legitimate ones. As for self interest, that's not how I view public policy matters. And as for the majesty of the system, in CA, illegal aliens can serve as *officers of the court*, work as attorneys - oh yes. And there are other travesties that have reversed centuries of accomplishment (I wasn't the only one laughing and shaking my head at the rah-rah video shown to the entire jury candidate pool in the huge room, with its sadly outdated boasts about the American system). Summarized, I just live here.

If, despite all their efforts to the contrary, a squish candidate wins, well no harm no foul. He will continue to grovel and play the pinata, apologize for things he's not guilty of, and generally pass liberal-lite policies and lay the groundwork for the next, more extreme "liberal" democat. Heck, there isn't really a unified "Democrat" or "Republican" party. In both cases you have coalitions. In European parliamentary countries, people vote for specific little parties, who thereafter form coalitions. In the U.S., the GOP and the Dems are the already formed coalitions. The Dems have long been far more capable of the few manipulating the many. This is done sub rosa, with the party itself just the end result. Republicans would be wise to understand these mechanics.

I agree your reasons for rejecting jury duty in your instances are valid; i.e. that no jury is capable of making an honest appraisal. But we don't know what cases are on the docket in Steve's situation. Most likely, just commonplace criminal stuff. We should not be ducking out of that chore, because somebody has to do it. And for a lawyer to counsel her employee to lie to a court to avoid jury service is just plain scummy. I expect Steve would be rejected in voir dire anyway, because, employed in a law office. Right?

649 Commoners and Nobles, OK sure. Think about it. Doesn't it make sense to you to have jurors who are familiar with the person being tried? Everything about jury selection is designed to get easily led, not too bright, people who can't think critically.. Seems to me. It's a lot like the way politicians view the electorate, in a way. They don't want intelligent people to get involved. Jury duty - Self employed people can't afford to lose the work. Employed people can't afford it either. They pay $20 a day or some BS like that.

652 Jury duty is, basically, modern day slavery. You lose any and all rights when the government picks your name for jury duty. It is a travesty and a farce. Of course the same thing happens when a court decides on a whim that you might be a material witness. You lose all rights as if you were never even a free man. Frankly, what happens in our judicial systems is pretty friggin pathetic. And it's not as if we give away all these rights in order to get anything of value in return. What we get back for these forced sacrifices is total bullshit. But I do really like how they pay you $9 for a day of jury duty (in PA) to prove that you aren't a slave to the state.

654 I disagree to the extent Candidate Trump clearly showed that "outsiders" who are not Approved, are not allowed to Play The Game. This is self evident. One has to have gone to the right schools, have been "vetted" as it were (God only knows this means extortionable activities, apparently) They showed little to no interest in fighting Barky, who was bad news. Very bad news. True, no Republicans voted for Barkycare, so that's something. But they've shown no spine at rolling back anything. They don't seem to fight - when they have enormous resources if they are willing to use them. Their electoral success would increase if they were to do so, but they do not. Everything seems to ratchet in one direction. There's NEVER any pushback at the latest psychosis du jour, whatever particular outrage is being foisted on the unsuspecting public. This has been going on for decades. It's been completely unnecessary for the most part. They have to be complicit at some level, no other explanation fits. President Trump lays all of this bare. That's why all the usual suspects are all freaking out.
