Toure: "This Is The Most Incredible Sandy Pic I've Seen Yet. A Scuba Diver In The Subway."
— Ace

Via @nkronos, a gem.

Well, I guess the strict definition of "incredible" is "not credible." Maybe that's what he meant.

I don't think he was using the strict definition, though.

Drew notes that, in addition to being absurd, the lights are on in the subway, despite it being flooded to the ceiling.

Maybe someone should throw in a giant squid and really pop open Toure's eyes.

127 Man honors dead wife by having her vagina carved on tombstone BELGRADE, SERBIA ¬Ė Talk about a holy gravesite! A Serbian widower honored the memory of his late wife by have her vagina engraved on her tombstone. Let that thought sink in during for a moment of silence. Grieving 72-year-old Milan Marinkovic wanted to fulfill his wife Milena¬ís last request to not be forgotten by having her likeness carved on her grave. But after 50 years of marriage, it wasn¬ít her face that the dying woman wanted her husband to remember the most¬Ö it was her vagina. Milena left detailed instructions (and a couple of photos) to ensure the artist would be inspired to capture her likeness in full glory. But poor Milan had a hard time finding a stonecutter to get his rocks off for the strange request. Several sculptors even called the idea ¬ďblasphemy!¬Ē In the end, love prevailed. Milan found the right man to pound his wife¬ís vagina into stone. Now the entrance to her womb, forever carved on her tomb, is there to help Milan remember his late wife. http://goo.gl/I7sMK

57 is this much different from this very blog running pictures of the old guard guarding the unknown soldier's tomb during sandy?

you know, the pics that were taken during a fairly routine rain shower in september?

ok, ok: so this scuba on the f/g is a lot more obviously fake, but still: running "incredible" pics without bothering to check their accuracy is something that your own cobloggers just did a couple of days ago @.@

Yes, there's a difference.

The picture posted of the guards actually happened - it's a credible photo of reality. The correction posted a very similar picture of the faithful guards keeping watch through the rain.

138 "Anyone who seriously thought someone would have been there to photograph the Tomb on the day Sandy struck was almost as stupid as Toure'." oh yeah, is that so? just wondering, since there actually ARE real pics during sandy showing the old guard at their post: how stupid would someone have to be in order to run his mouth off about others' "stupid" beliefs in actual, corroborated fact? it's clear that this blog, and other unquestioning sources around the internet, freely ran with a false picture purporting to show the old guard during sandy. regardless of how you personally felt about the story (/rolleyes), the fact remains that claiming a picture to be something it isn't for sheer emotional effect -- worked on you! -- is somewhat similar to touré's mistake here, and it's not a mistake that should be made by a respected news source. no, it certainly isn't anywhere near as stupid as believing an obviously fake picture is real. it *is* similar in that a simple one-sentence google search before posting the pic would have prevented the embarrassment of a news source claiming a pic to be something it's not. now, what *is* as as stupid as touré, tho, is making asinine statements doubting the intelligence of others who would "seriously believe" that someone was there to photograph the old guard during sandy -- when there are, in fact, official pics of that very event. in fact, that's even more stupid than touré, because at least touré wasn't trying to mock anyone else's intelligence. foot, meet mouth.

I don¬ít think there¬ís a conspiracy at work. Rather, I think journalists tend to act on their instincts. And, collectively, the mainstream media¬ís instincts run liberal. In 2000, a Democratic operative orchestrated an ¬ďOctober surprise¬Ē attack on George W. Bush, revealing that 24 years earlier, he¬íd been arrested for drunken driving. The media went into a feeding frenzy. ¬ďIs all the 24-hour coverage of Bush¬ís 24-year-old DUI arrest the product of a liberal media almost drunk on the idea of sinking him, or is it a legitimate, indeed unavoidable news story?¬Ē asked Howard Kurtz on his CNN show ¬ďReliable Sources.¬Ē The consensus among the guests: It wasn¬ít a legitimate news story. But the media kept going with it. One could go on and on. In September 2004, former CBS titan Dan Rather gambled his entire career on a story about Bush¬ís service in the National Guard. His instincts were so powerful, he didn¬ít thoroughly check the documents he relied on, which were forgeries. NY Post

Someone needs to review what the word 'fake' means." passing a picture off as something it isn't is, in fact, "fake". i could link you to a dictionary, but i know you'd throw a fit about how webster's has been co-opted by leftists and "fake" never meant "something passed off as something it isn't". like i said, there's no comparison between believing this scuba pic is real and believing the september pic, which is certainly the most powerful "old guard in a rainstorm" pic, was taken during sandy. the salient comparison lies in the fact that both mistakes could easily have been prevented with a cursory, 15-second google search...and these days, most browsers redirect non-protocol queries to google or bing, so it's a simple matter of pressing f6 and typing the question. that this blog, among others, is a legitimate news site means that it shouldn't be making sloppy mistakes that could be prevented by a quick google search -- and passing off a pic as something is isn't is precisely the type of easily-preventable chain-lettre amateurism that feeds into the moribund msm's charges of "sloppiness" and "inaccuracy". if you want to whine about your blog being called out for making a mistake, you're probably in the wrong business. i didn't realise that the blog had issued a correction until i read a comment here, so at this point the issue is moot, but defending the passing off of a picture as something it wasn't because some feel-good chain email told one of the cobloggers it was belies the commitment to accuracy that ace, who waits days before posting some of his more dubious tips, has been careful to cultivate.

If a comment falls in the forest where nobody reads it, is the commenter still an asshole troll?

220 and if there's one thing that expert, high-IQ, genius trolls like me do in our advanced, PhD-level research is not check up on the post that we bitch about OT for an hour or so and discover that there was a 'correction' added to the post i had been sanctimoniously bitching about.

fist, meet ass.

223 Another hint should have been the reflection off the puddle on the left hand side of the platform.

Dumbass simperirng dipshit.

226 This is why people are calling it such a disaster. 50 feet of seawater in the subway system, for starters. This isn't like a town that regularly gets flooded, its completely unready and its going to cost a big fortune to fix.

227 One small minor correction - - If that is a New York subway platform, That is not a RAIN puddle. Just saying.

230 I've had my PADI card since 1979, but even in the Caymans I've never seen water that clear. Amazing how none of the dirt and crap in those subways mixed into the water, isn't it? That's pretty much the length of an entire platform, which Wikipedia tells me is typically 500-600 feet long. They should bottle that water and sell it, I suppose.

231 Did anyone else notice the spill on the floor in the picture? It looks like there is a puddle not too far off in front of the diver.

232 Sooner Jeneous Toure has seen too many movies - every time someone dives into water, I seldom fail to exclaim, "Oh, my, how clear the Hudson / Mississippi / Amazon River is! We really must visit it sometime!"

236 That's not real. The scuba diver doesn't have a spear gun...

237

The water's as clean as a swimming pool - there should be sediment, filth, and debris everywhere. The water pouring in would have smasehed stuff.

I know, our office's basement got flooded a couple of summers ago and the water was anything but clean, and doors were smashed, furniture thrown about, etc.

238 The picture is just an amusing fake. The "water" is impossibly clear. Even in excellent diving conditions, visibility isn't that good. Imagine what would *really* be in that floodwater!!! (Yes, I have gone scuba diving.)

Posted by: JM in San Diego CA at November 01, 2012 10:22 AM (mS0yN)

239 The electric was remove long before any flooding took place in any of New York's subways. If you have lived in any third world countries you know turning off the electric before before flooding is standard practice in these countries.
