Totten Travelogue: Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo
— Gabriel Malor

Michael Totten describes part of his journey in Eastern Europe:

“My name is Michael,” I said to a young boy. “What's yours?”

“Mario,” he said.

“Mister, where are you from?” said a little girl.

“America,” I said.

“Yay!” The kids cheered.

Albania is fanatically pro-American, which is perhaps a bit counterintuitive to many Americans since it is at least nominally a Muslim-majority country. The conventional assumption that Muslims hate Americans everywhere isn't true.

Click over to read the whole thing, with pictures! I especially like his improvised sign-language for "danger." I would have freaked out too.

4 This was the comment I found insightful, when they asked their Montengran cab-driver what he thought about joining the EU.

“No!” Ratko said. “European Union…big Yugoslavia.”

Latka gets it, what's wrong with the rest of Europe.

Did anyone else get this reference? Should it concern me that I did?

6 gordo, I learned my European geography from Cold-war era maps which chopped Europe into the West and the Eastern Bloc. There wasn't any south!

Silly out-of-date public schools...

7 So did we slashdot Michael's site with a Ace-O-Launch?

8 BTW, what's with the odd ball font where " should be? Sounds like someone is writing in Word and pasting into the blog. At least, that's what happens to me when I do that.

9 Whoops. Vmaximus, Michael got hit by Insty this morning, too. That probably did more damage than an Ace-o-lanche.

WunderKraut, not it's not from pasting in Word. It happens with certain types of quotation marks being imported from the old site.

10 Ah. I see.

11 America is a polyphyletic country, there is no right for the Americans to suspect other person's religions and attitude to them.
