Happy Friday.

Occasional guestblogger Ben Domenech linked this old "Libertarian Purity Test" on Twitter last night, which provided a couple amusing hours of discussion. I (and others) were interested to discover just how wide the range of outcomes within the GOP blogosphere and twitterverse.

Among the cobs, I scored a 65. JohnE scored a 68. Andy scored a 56. Fairly close together.

For comparison's sake, Adam Baldwin scored a 73. Kathleen McKinley, who commented here years ago as RightwingSparkle before going on to blogospheric success of her own, scored an 82. Domenech himself scored a 92.

On the low end, John Gabriel, who joined us for the podcast two weeks ago, scored a 41. Guestblogger Ben Howe, of Red State, scored a 31. And Townhall blogger and radio host Guy Benson scored a 26.

Domenech said he's going to tally last night's responses and share the results.

8 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, June 28, 2013.  Sorry didnÂ’t make it yesterday.  Rocking chair got me.

On this day in 1894 the commies got their way and Labor Day was made a federal holiday.  Congress kissed their ass after the military killed a bunch of then during the Pullman strike in which the commies blocked trains from running.

28 This is BS

Women from across six of the Republican party's top campaign committees will gather Friday to launch a new project designed to promote the recruitment of female GOP candidates, as the party looks to repair its image among a demographic that broke 55-43 percent for President Obama in 2012.

They say “women” when in fact it is minority women who voted for Obama by 95% which skewed the results.

Apologies for long post--I contribute infrequently. Another interesting observation: my parents live right next to the main Burlington Northern route to/from the new boom oil fields in ND. We drank Arnold Palmer Zero and watched 60-80 mile-long tankers a day thundering by to the refineries in the south. The coal trains also dump at the coal plant outside of the town. Yeah, there's a reason Elvis was The King.  I read somewhere that their relationship got very serious, but ended basically when AM said she didn't want the Memphis Mafia hanging around and she wanted to keep on going with her career.    Priscilla was more malleable when it came to that.

The Winters quote is funny, since there's a long-time rumor that she and Marilyn Monroe carried on an affair when the two of them were roommates.  And did  you know Monroe once slept with Joan Crawford?  Like Talullah Bankhead, Crawford had a massive sexual appetite, but was apparently quite kinky; Monroe only said later, "she wanted me to do things no woman should do to another."

182 Morning everyone!

I watched the afternoon session of the Zimmerman trial yesterday, caught them finishing up with "DD", of the wrap around throat pouch, then through three, I think, further witnesses before recessing for the day. So far, I don't get what the prosecution is trying to prove with their own witnesses. 'DD's credibility has been demolished, thanks in no small part to the overzealous prosecution team. The remaining witnesses have offered up testimony that matches Zimmerman's statements to the police immediately after the shooting.

With the exception of the one witness that claims to have heard three separate shots, and placed Zim, and Trayvon in positions that would have resulted in Trayvon being shot in the back.

The jury was shown pictures of Z's bloodied face, and the back of his head....compared to a few days ago when they were shown pictures of the crime scene, and Trayvon, who didn't have a mark on him, (other than a bullet wound to his chest).

Unless the prosecution has some heavy gun star witnesses yet to take the stand, they're going to lose this case spectacularly. Not that it matters....the feds are waiting in the wings to snatch up the killer of TFG's son, and will make a big show of trying him on whatever charges they can drum up....even if all they can stick him with is 'lying to investigators', which is the only reason Martha Stewart ever saw the inside of a prison.

If it wasn't about race and rather about what they perceived as vigilantism and conceal and carry it was certainly made into a case about race. And if GZ is acquited it will certainly be about race . If you are angry about not having a job you don't have job and are unable to blame that on President Hope and Change and some of his economic policies it's a lot easier to blame it on racism. That will serve Obama and his cronies very well.

OK, another Crawford story.  I've told this before, too, but with the caveat that it's only a rumor: there was a Hollywood brothel nicknamed "Mae's" which specialized in women who were doubles for popular stars of the day, including Claudette Colbert (guys had a thing for It Happened One Night, obviously) and Shirley Temple (who was always asked to suck lollipops, IYKWIM).

Apparently, Crawford liked to go there and substitute for her own double from time to time and was thrilled to hear men tell her that she was an exact twin of the star.

I can't do it from here, but if you search "Hollywood Babylon" and "Joan Crawford," you might find some NSFW pictures of Joan back when she was a "men's picture" model and part-time hooker named Lucille LeSeuer.

Those would all exist, but they'd be done cooperatively at a local level.

Early America didn't have paid teachers in the the manner they are today.  The locals got together and built a schoolhouse, and then found a teacher who was willing to work for contributions from the community.  Being a teacher used to be a calling, not a 9-3 "job".

The rural town I grew up in had an all volunteer fire department and ambulance.  Its still that way today.

The policeman was volunteer too, and moonlighted driving a schoolbus.  If additional people were needed, some residents would be rounded up and deputized.

All the properties in town had wells and septic systems.

241 What liberals don't understand about Rachel Jeantel: Ms. Jeantel may need people to lighten up on her, but she's still a bad witness, and the time for *automatically* giving credence to any and all complaints from certain segments needs to come to an end, because it results in injustice. Remember, it's Zimmerman who faces life in jail, not Rachel. If she can't bring a certain level of credibility to the plate, if black society in general can't, then I do not consider it justice to automatically defer to them when they claim racism, because it ain't in fact justice. It's the medieval villagers, mired in muck and ignorance, saying someone is a witch.

She is an actual living breathing result of the undereducated culture and school system that we are allowing to take over larger and larger chunks of the fabric of our society.

And just maybe, someone will ask themselves how we as a culture have allowed this system to churn out DeeDee's for years, without ever being held accountable for it.

274 65. Of course I don't describe myself as a libertarian of any flavor. Libertarianism is too simple to have never been tried, and it didn't survive into history even once. With the possible exception of the pirate "community" in the caribbean, and look how that turns out when there are nation states who decide to end it. I'll go with what the US Constitution says with the added step of requiring the notes the authors left be used when interpreting it. The perfect score 160 point Libertarian is a utopian dreamer. Utopia is always on the other side of an ocean of blood, no matter who's political views are in place there.

I agree with AlexTheChick and EoJ and others the test is largely anarcho in basis and I'm not anarcho but this "wonderful" nation we're in is a result of all this "help" the govt has given in the last 100 years. If the price of this society is the death of the American Experiment in liberty I'd rather have no net, work harder for less, and be left alone. That's just who I am. Sorry

292 To answer Salon's question on the smearing of Ms. Jeantel: Rachel is getting smeared because those doing so are fully aware--as Paula Deen shows--that the noose awaits them if they ever screw up on racial matters. To then have the prosecution's star witness in this trial--*star*, mind you--be a subliterate moron is a bridge too far. Because folks feel they their own lives could be forfeit if an idiot like that complains, because all too many others will be ready to take up the banner. One of the results of the Great Awakening of the 18th century was that the Southern gentry realized that if they were going to continue to enjoy being the morally ascendent segment of society, they had to develop more virtue, because the yeomanry was not going to put up with getting out of the way on the sidewalks any longer just based upon someone's wealth.

337 I scored a 108.

So I'm still pretty hard-core, I guess.

And that's after some years of moderating my libertarianism with further reading of Hayek et al.  I'm "evolving" into more Old-Whiggishness (or 'classical-liberalism') as time goes on.

(I may be hard-core, but I still consider the cap-L Libertarians and most of the Reason.com crowd to be totally around the bend.)

389 > 147 Teaching American to the Brits?? Ha! Funny you should say that--I elaborated on that to a TOEFL college interview yesterday. I'm thinking of being a shorts and sweatshirt (native costume) retired professor type, teaching 19-21 yo's in a community college-type setting. MamaWinger urged me to make my presence known and contribute more. I feel like I need to post and raise a "Don't Shoot! Friend!" White flag so the Moron EuroH8tr Troll Division doesn't slaughter me. I also think sometimes I'm an outsider commenting with insider knowledge. Maybe I am. Whatever--I'm a dyed-in-the-wool AOSHQ Capital M moron. I come from a WI/Suburban Chicago family--we have good ol' grunt military running in our genes. My 84 yo dad was relatong tales about his early married days in Greenland. he went up there for 2 years--joint Army/Navy/General Mills scientific expedition--testing how radar/sonar functioned in the ice beds. Dad stole a wooden toilet seat from the Officers camp 50 miles back on the ice. Before the purloined toilet seat, the scientsts and grunts were using a plank of wood laid over a 600 ft crevasse. I went libtard for a few years after being enchanted with this big city--and the rich American crowd I was in. 2008 changed ALL of that. So did AoSHQ, who slapped this lurker awake and back to my roots and reality. I've been here a couple of decades. I live in a very upscale, nice Brit neighbourhood, but shop and walk amongst the haram in a neighbourhood that looks like Tunis on a hot day. Would so badly like to move back to the LaCrosse WI area, but too many ties, too many things, too many years keep me here bitching about living w/ libs. After 2008, and especially after all the recent scandals crap, it's been easier making my peace with staying here--the USA, when generally looked at from afar, is a very scary place these days. (And we're not??) Hey, at least when soldiers get their heads chopped off in the street, we get intellectual roundtable fair, unbiased BBC panels telling us how awful that is. He could have been a gay soldier, which would have been another h8-charge added to the scumbag's grocery list of charges. I try and hunker down in my urban flower and veg garden and play with my Jack Russell a lot. Don't need a bug-out bag because I'm a Christian, ala Mama-Winger flavoured. It keeps me sane, knowing I've got a front row seat on Armageddon, and I know the end of the film. I'm also friends with Sweasel--I hope she doesn't mind that--and she's a really savvy, smart solid friend. But she lives in Pretty England with her chickies. I live right smack in the middle of a whole bunch of libtards. Red Ken Livingstone and Cat Stevens are neighbours. Lol. There. I announced myself. Peace and love to you all. Oh, and Sven? 417 The "bombing civilians" thing tripped me up.   For example, I don't believe in bombing civilians solely to bomb civilians.  That's what terrorists do.   But I also don't believe in hindering our military's effectiveness by denying them the opportunity to bomb targets that happen to be in civilian-heavy areas.   I'm against killing civilians for the sake of it, but    that's not the same as collateral damage, which is a necessary evil.

418 Fuck that test.

I'm sure it lacks a few "T/F" questions to identify a Libertarian:

1)Did evil Chimpy McBushitler and his perpetual Military Industrial War Machine bring down the World Trade Center, including building #7 (about which I just have a few questions), with explosives? If "T", you just might be a real Libertarian! Hail Paul!

2) Was Jesse Ventura the most awesome governor ever? If "T", you just might be a real Libertarian! Hail Paul!

3) Did Paragon of Libertarian Principle, Blessed Jesse, pwn Opie & Anthony on their show, especially when he walked off in ultimate triumph? If "T", you just might be a real Libertarian! Hail Paul!  http://scoamf.us/jessieopie

4) Child porn is just another awesome way to exercise your 1st Amendment rights?
If "T", you just might be a real Libertarian! Hail Paul!

She's been in England since the early 80's and is married to an Englishman, but they are planning to move to New England if they ever sell their house. I feel for the English because I love English history and literature and three of my favorite Christians writers and thinkers were John Wesley, George Herbert and Julian of Norwich. I would be interested-if you have time- to hear your thoughts on Christianity in England. My sister is not religious, so I only know that they are many more practicing Muslims than Christians which saddens me and worries me.

He didn't want the giant orphanage with bunks and all that. Too impersonal. So he raises money and builds a small house on the property where he's at. It houses, I think, 6 kids and one adult. The adult is a local South African woman, typically older and without family, that they've found through local churches. She takes on the role of "grandmother" (there's a specific term that I'm forgetting) and cares for and raises the kids as her own with assistance (obv) from his org.

Actually, that part is true.  I completely believe that she's using it as a racist term, but in Florida, cowboys back in the 1700's used to be called crackers because of them cracking their whips driving the herds.  I went to an old ranch outside of Poinciana a couple of years ago, and that's the way that it was explained to me.  Florida actually did have a booming ranching business way back in the day.

453 Once you accept the idea that all government is inherently evil, it follows naturally that everything it does is contaminated. Yeah... no. Or, rather- only inasmuch as any organization of human beings is "inherently evil." Humans are "inherently evil." I'd rather have a government around to keep you from killing me and taking my stuff. Or, at least, to kill you back after you have killed me and taken my stuff. The fact that our particular government has grown too large, too invasive, and too powerful is a problem- and one that must be rectified sooner rather than later- but that's the nature of all things. All organizations exist primarily to survive, and "survival" often requires ever-increasing power (or is thought, by the organization, to require it).

I go on sites like "Neo Neo Con" (and that writer has been a conservative for much longer than I have) but since the sites I usually go on tend to be full of people who have always been conservative, it's hard for me to sometimes fit in Since almost everyone I am close to aside from my spouse and son is a liberal it makes for gatherings where I don't talk about politics very much or at all so I empathize with you. That's why I get frustrated when people say "Burn it down" casually because w'e're mostly all wheat and tares together and as Dennis Prager remarks there are many lovely people who are liberal. It's the leftist religion that's the problem.

I don't think we realize the level of hate the leftists have ingrained in the black community for whites.

I see supposedly educated blacks on the FB dropping into the most casual and vile of racist assumptions--they very type they'd raise a fucking riot over if it was a white person.

532 The govt sending you to jail or killing you is a wee bit different than simply not allowing you to associate. I wish if I didn't pay taxes the govt would just leave me the hell alone. But it's not really, not conceptually. If the Church were the Government, they would have the power to jail or kill me. Social Order requires that someone have that power, or else there is only anarchy. Almost certainly. Choice is good. So what happens when the guy whose car you bumped in the parking lot "chooses" the police force that he owns and uses the courts owned by his best buds? Seriously, two of the few things that government does better ("better" defined as "more-or-less democratically corrupt") than private companies are police and courts. And, while I believe I should be able to own a howitzer (if I can afford it), and my right of free association means I should be able to be close friends with lots of other people with howitzers, actual "private armies" are a very, very bad idea. You can ask Early Modern Europe about what happens when there are a lot of mercenary armies around.

Actually the system is broke as all shit.  This is a "normal" rate on student loans by any stretch.  It's legislated at 6.8% which is as stupid as legislating it at 2.3%

It should just float with the market, maybe with a cap around 10% (maybe.)

but that's crazy.

And in either case, fuck the current crop of students.  You can only consolidate once, and I had to consolidate the last time this happened in 2007, so I'm already paying 6.8% with no relief from congress, so pardon me if I don't feel bad.

They've accepted the grifting, grinding nature of the Federal machine as a necessary evil and convinced themselves sitting in their wealth and secure social positions that the Federal wheat thresher's enforced safety net negates the need for community based altruism. I may be a weepy-eyed sentimentalist, but I've always admired the speech in Gettysburg:

Chamberlain: This regiment was formed last summer in Maine. There were a thousand of us then. There are less than three hundred of us now. All of us volunteered to fight for the union, just as you did. Some came mainly because we were bored at home -- thought this looked like it might be fun. Some came because we were ashamed not to. Many of us came because it was the right thing to do. And all of us have seen men die.

This is a different kind of army. If you look back through history, you will see men fighting for pay, for women, for some other kind of loot. They fight for land, power, because a king leads them or -- or just because they like killing. But we are here for something new. This has not happened much in the history of the world. We are an army out to set other men free.

America should be free ground -- all of it. Not divided by a line between slave state and free -- all the way, from here to the Pacific Ocean. No man has to bow. No man born to royalty. Here, we judge you by what you do, not by who your father was. Here, you can be something. Here, is the place to build a home.

But it's not the land. There's always more land.
It's the idea that we all have value -- you and me.
What we're fighting for, in the end, we're fighting for each other.

Sorry, I didn't mean to preach. You, you go ahead. You talk for awhile. If you -- If you choose to join us, you want your muskets back, you can have 'em. Nothing more will be said by anybody anywhere. If you choose not to join us, well you can come along under guard, and when this is all over I will do what I can to see you get a fair treatment. But for now, we're moving out.

Gentlemen, I think if we lose this fight, we lose the war. So if you choose to join us, I'll be personally very grateful.

This reminds me of when I used to travel for work to Huntsville, Alabama. Given the number of non-southern transplants, there was a lot of good-natured ribbing about people's being from the wrong side of the Mason-Dixon line. The punchline answer for, "Do you even know where the Mason-Dixon line is?" was, "Just north of wherever I'm standing." I see that quite a few comments on this thread say essentially the same thing but say it earnestly.

I recognize it's not a *new* doctrine, but it seems like the people in the red hats treat it as the only doctrine these days.  I wish we'd go through the trouble of actually excommunicating a few people every now and then (Some would probably tell me I'd be high on that list, but meh.)

582 A Copperhead was a member of a vocal group of Democrats located in the Northern United States of the Union who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans started calling antiwar Democrats "Copperheads", likening them to the venomous snake. The Peace Democrats accepted the label, reinterpreting the copper "head" as the likeness of Liberty, which they cut from copper pennies and proudly wore as badges.

They comprised the more extreme wing of the "Peace Democrats" and were often informally called "Butternuts" (for the color of the Confederate uniforms). The most famous Copperhead was Ohio's Clement L. Vallandigham, a Congressman and leader of the Democratic Party.

586 It should just float with the market, and be underwritten by the school you attended, not society. Or at least underwritten by the actual bank that makes the loan. But seriously, (not to derail into religion too much) salvation is an individual gift. Getting kicked out of church doesn't deny you the ability to receive the whole purpose. Brief side-step into religion: Jesus (and the Apostles later) made it pretty clear that Christians need each other. Heck, Jesus made it pretty clear, "Wherever three or more of you are gathered together in my name, there I will be also." Now, back to the main point: The question isn't whether or not I can still receive salvation. The question is "who protects (governs) society?" If there is no government (or it's "completely privatized"), then there is no recourse EXCEPT vigilante justice. Who gets to decide which police force and courts to use? Who gets to enforce that decision? How? There will be a government. The only question is its form. Anarchy is impossible because someone is going to take power. Will the government be some despot who just took over? Will it be the Church? Will it be an elected government of some type?

I have a professor who declares that Anarcho-capitalism is in fact a paradox that cannot exist.

He tries to explain it, but it's in the weeds philosophically so I don't quite get it.

Something about the fact that it predicates the existence of some form of valuation (currency) which is contra to the anarcho point.  (Bartering may work on a small scale, but it'd be pretty hard to build anything beyond a small community based on that, which is why we abandoned it so early in our development.)

590 The Republican Party Leadership incumbents are authoritarians, proven by their votes. You'd have to be at least 50-something to remember how things changed with the assassination of Kennedy as each subsequent POTUS after Eisenhower ignored Ike's closing address to America. R-Ike won the presidency (by a narrow margin) on the platform to END U.S. INTERVENTION WAR, specifically to bring our troops home from Korea. Truman had sent the US Military to Vietnam/IndoChina to aid the French when the communists invaded S.Korea. After LBJ's decision to "reset" where the French Empire retreated, despite all warnings not to re-do Korea in Vietnam, every president since has promoted more and more global interventionism, with pitiful results from Vietnam through Libya. The worst will happen given McCain's Syrian Folly. If we're trading with Vietnam now, and with Communist China as our MOST FAVORED NATION, what the hell were the "domino effect" Asian US Wars supposed to prove? Certainly not curtailing the growth of communism. Absolutely not "nation building." Ah, with the guilt trip media hype, the entry of neoconservatism permeated the Republican Party and usurped the GOP Leadership as the likes of Goldwater retired from the Senate. "Bigger is better" government propaganda bought "bipartisan" politicians and votes with 'shared values' or "free" money for glut provided at taxpayer expense. And the difference between the two parties is that Democrat voters get what they want, while Republican voters are betrayed by those whom they elect. "Promise them anything, just get their votes." All is vanity. Republican politicians fool themselves or at least their constituents into thinking that Republicans provide "better leadership" on the too big to fail, too big to jail USS Titanic.guv. Damn, 'we built that.' Bush said to take it over there so we wouldn't have authoritarianism or terror here, tralala. Well, since we KNOW we're fucked by big guv, there's nothing to fear but the "1984" known threat that terror is all there "is". Those who grew up under statism are accustomed. Some feel more rankled than others about the inconveniences of servitude within an authoritarian state, being denied opportunity to work on the basis of prejudice for instance. Some feel more deserving than others, because it's their "right" as the know-better elitists to force their way, infringing on their "lessers" in society. And there are those in the middle, just keeping their nose to the grindstone doing the best that they can. Certainly no shame in doing one's best in life, given mutual respect. Those who grew up with liberty recognized as integral to society and to individualism are bitter clingers to classical liberalism, including an element of egalitarianism in that everyone has the same rights as everyone else. The Golden Rule was universally taught to children as "fair play". We used to say, "Live and let live" rather than sweat over micromanaging other people's lives. Busy bodies sticking their nose into other people's business were unpopular. These days, the inverse. Citizen Serfs

She said use of the work "dark" or "black" could be very problematic. Obviously it would be if you were calling people "darkies" which obviously none of us were going to do that, Well, gee, I don't look at patients as ii they were a certain color and that's it. I notice that when i come into a room, but . I look at them as if they are patients who need to be listened to, cared about and prayed with if they want that. I also think if saying something like "black humor" offends someone (that was one example she used) they may be a little sensitive. 606 @510, B Chochran. I attend Church regularly and Church ladies always scare me to death, especially the old , fat mean ones (I'm in the south). Heck I'd rather crawl over broken glass with my eyeballs than cross them! But I do love the Church bulletins. It's humor in the rough! For example look at these little gems. Made me LOL. You just can't make stuff like this up. I almost met Jesus from laughing so hard at this. Thank God for church ladies with computers. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins, or were announced in church services: The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. The sermon this morning: Jesus Walks on the Water. The sermon tonight: Searching for Jesus Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you. Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM . All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. is done. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new campaign slogan last Sunday:"I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours."

615 I'm a closet Drucker-ist. ----------------------------- Peter DruckerÂ’s definition of Free Enterprise is pretty straightforward. It has four elements: Governments set the rules of the economy but usually donÂ’t participate by running businesses Governments can operate natural monopolies or operations needed for national security; Productive Resources owned privately; Corporations competing in Markets and Market forces determine business decisions. ------------------------------------------ Government should act like hockey referees - call penalties, send players to the box, and step in to break up fights ... but only after one of the combatants falls to the ice. _

616 I have a professor who declares that Anarcho-capitalism is in fact a paradox that cannot exist. He's right. At least, if it really fits the root terms. Anarchy is the absent of government. But, without government, no meaningful economy can exist. "Privately issued currencies" are bull-ca-ca. Oh, they might work for a while, especially if they're pegged to some standard of gold (or other hard asset). But who defines exchange rates? Who enforces them? There are far more questions than that, too. Capitalism is more accurately called "money-ism." No one is really making shovels, or cars, or machining tools, and just "lending" them to people. No, people who have those shovels, cars, or machining tools expect to sell or lease them for money, and they expect to do it right now. Well, for meaningful money to exist, some governing authority must exist. That said, I think a lot of "hard core libertarians" just kind of handwave that "some authority" will exist or that "people will just get along" or some such. Which is to say: even without meaning to, they normally assume a government even when they're talking about privatizing all aspects of government.

617 Some of those I had heard, but since I like Shakespeare I particularly enjoyed the "Hamlet" one.I didn't know Shakespeare also wrote "Hamlet in the church basement." I also liked the electric girdles announcment We have some mean church ladies in the North too. I had one woman yell so loudly and insultingly over the phone that I had to hold it away from my ear. We also have lovely church ladies such as the ones who continued to send us birthday and anniversary cards 10 years after we left the church because they had what I called "the ministry of little notes." I always smile inwardly when people say. "It's a shame we couldn't have the love and cooperation they had in the early church." With that comment I guess they hadn't read either the letters of Paul or the Book Of Revelation in a long time.

618 True story...

During my senior year, I worked in my college's financial aid department. Basic stuff, like answering phones, filing, etc etc.

There was this AA/black guy that I knew because he dated a friend of mine our freshman year. He was always a slacker, a clown. Anyway, he dropped out halfway through second semester freshman year.

Well, upon review of his file, I found out that his education was being mostly subsidized by some NAACP fund. The rest was a grant through the college for "diversity" purposes (This was a very white, private college) Basically, he had no out of pocket expenses. Well, as it was, this NAACP apparently didn't get the memo three years prior that he was no longer enrolled, and they had been paying for like 80% of his education for the entire 4 years.

Get this. His high school GPA was somewhere in the 2.5 or lower range. And, his 1st semester of college GPA was like 0.8. I am not kidding. I found the paperwork that the college sent them, informing him of his GPA progress (or lack thereof) And they STILL paid for his education. The dude was failing miserably, and the NAACP was shelling out 15 grand a year for him anyway.

Anyway, one thing I can say about federal loans...I dislike a lot of it. I think it is a waste sometimes. But, the one thing I can say about federal loans, is there is a limit, per student. There is a max amount. And, it is fair and equal. They don't look at race or gender or anything like that. If you are a student, you get x amount of dollars. Period.

I fear that if student loans were to get privatized, or whatever, my fear is that you are looking at a lot of messed up red tape. A lot of money getting mismanaged. Possibly, even MORE people getting into college that should be there. And, of course, the discrimination that could come with privatized loans.

I scored 50, which coincidentally happens to be my IQ. On a good day.

The flaw in the test was that many of the questions were all or nothing. For example, there is a good deal of difference between licensing plumbers and licensing brain surgeons. Still, it was a pretty good test.

I have a friend who claims he wants mere anarchy loosed on the world.

His sole defense, a 6 shooter revolver that he only had to purchase because he's a security guard at the local university.

I keep explaining "you won't survive very long in anarchy.  For all your talk, you're a product of an urban/suburban environment, and I, unshackled at that point of morality, can and will shoot you."

I also told him that should mere anarchy be released, I will go to his house first, dispatch him to make my point and then move on. (I don't keep tons of ammo around, I imagine I wouldn't want to live very long in a constant state of war anyway.)

Posted by: tsrblke at June 28, 2013 05:05 AM (GaqMa)

625 "This is the flaw in the anarchists' logic." Odd. Like seeking heaven on earth. Some do it by different formulaic recipes according to taste and aesthetic. Utopia. Taking any idea to an extreme loses general application; and applying the fanatic reduction as if literally a generalization is a troubling flaw, not logical. Authoritarianism, at the other end of the pendulum from Liberty, is hypocritically advertised as "compassionate conservatism" marketing "a thousand points of light". Suckers buy into the opposite game. To each their own. Personally, I'd rather people admit what they're selling rather than lie to my face. It's like the damned door to door salesmen/pollsters insisting that they're not soliciting, ignoring my two posted signs. They are attempting to take something profitable from the intrusive interaction. I'd rather they not intrude in my life. That would NOT mean I wish they'd never been born, of that they ought to be "disappeared". I do, however, demand my inalienable rights be respected, as I do return that courtesy of mutual respect to strangers, friends and family.

626 I didnt find the test helpful. Govt wasnt defined. And it was too black and white, with no recognition of realities tgat impact on the answers. I am sure I would not have scored high though, because ultimately the libertarian POV strikes me as favoring anarchy and very naive. Glad to see John Gabriel's score. He's one of my favorite follows on twitter.

628 Our founding fathers were classical liberal geniuses. They created (or invented) this uniquely balanced and symmetrical US Constitutional Republic. Constitutional libertarians support this framework that balances the interests of Liberty. "Anarchy" is not part of our Constitutional Governance. Neither is "Authoritarianism". The narrow gate and path to liberty in life contrasts as a razor's edge against the wide and most popular gate to destruction.

Posted by: panzernashorn at June 28, 2013 05:25 AM (MhA4j)

629 but since I like Shakespeare I particularly enjoyed the "Hamlet" one I just finished James Shapiro's "1599-A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare." One of the best books on the Bard I've ever read, and I've read a ton. You might want to check it out.

631

75 on the test.  Would be interesting to see a plot of where your score deviated most from the mean.

And don't forget the political motivation behind the Zimmerman trial - Obama waded in on a capital case and in no small part greenlighted the persecution that has followed.  Lucky for him he's a Democrat, but unlucky for Zimmerman, who would have an open-and-shut mistrial case if Obama was a Republican.

I am not liking the way this country is being led, the rise of an overlord class, and what it is doing to us.

Posted by: Ray Van Dune at June 28, 2013 05:41 AM (sG76x)

632 Wow, lots of pretty hard-core libertarians on this site.  I'm probably the most libertarian person I know, but have moved to incrementalism in politics and only scored a 35.  Of course, in the current Democratic Party you'd be hard-pressed to score above 0, and Republican Party politicians, even if they're lying to their base, would scarcely get above 20.

Posted by: JohnMilton'sGhost at June 28, 2013 05:48 AM (FEj0H)

633 Agreed (@632) - 37 here, and it seems that in order to get above 50, if that were an actual goal, I'd have to think that absolutely all taxes/regulations/defense/government should be removed. I guess I'm not nearly as libertarian as I'd thought I was. Under the circumstances, I can live with that.

642 Libertarian Purity Test score: 27

643 That purity test? If that's a demonstration of what you have to believe to be a "true" libertarian, then they're just whackadoodles.

(I got a 60)

Some of the stuff that I assumed would net me a higher score were just off the wall and made nooo sense.

Now I know why luaP noR gives me the creeps.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Ecclesiates 9:11) at June 28, 2013 08:19 AM (28TG+)

644 Oh and by the way, Nelson Mandela would qualify as a terrorist these days and would be in the slam slam toot suite.

As I recall, he either planned or planned and successfully mined a railroad track and people were injured/died.

THAT'S WHY HE WAS IN JAIL.

Not because he was Black or even a Communist but because he plotted to injure and kill people.

Let's try to remember history folks. It ain't what the media told us or tells us. Since we know they lie, why do we believe anything they say?

Even when it seems to support what we believe to be true.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Ecclesiates 9:11) at June 28, 2013 08:23 AM (28TG+)

645 So I finally went ahead and filled out the Libertarian test. I got an 18. Now I don't have any clue if they meant "government" to only refer to the Federal government. It looked to me as if it referred to local governments as well. In which case I'd be pretty worried about anyone who scored higher than a 50.

Posted by: Y-not at June 28, 2013 09:23 AM (5H6zj)

646 94 Some of the questions were confusing. Privatizing fire and police seems extreme, but the more I think about it, why the hell not? I would disagree with having to swipe a credit card before they put the fire in my house out, so I'd need the ramifications of this clarified. But the local municipality hiring a private company to provide fire services, I'm cool with that.

Posted by: Andrew at June 28, 2013 09:31 AM (HS3dy)

647 Some of the questions were confusing. Privatizing fire and police seems extreme, but the more I think about it, why the hell not? --- Without getting into a big debate about it, I think the reason I score so low is I believe in trying to fix existing systems first, rather than tossing them out. Libertarians apparently don't ever believe that's possible. I really don't see a constitutional or historical basis for many of the positions espoused in the quiz, especially as it pertains to local and state govts. So the basis for the libertarian position has to do with a (I think naive) view of a large society without governance.

Not likely, I scored 53 and I'm amoral. It's probably the fact that you realize that "Professional" firefighters and other first responders were required at the twin towers to handle the situation.
