Happy Tuesday.

Late yesterday, Sec. Kerry backtracked on his apartheid comment that he had let poor spokesjoke Jen Psaki defend for two days, suggesting both that "I will not allow my commitment to Israel to be questioned" and, somewhat contrarily, that "if I could rewind the tape, I would have chosen a different word."

Kerry also received an apology from the Trilateral Commission, to whose members Kerry had made the incendiary remark, since apparently such appearances are intended to be kept off the record and out of the ears of the public. The Commission's apology suggests that Daily Beast reporter Josh Rogin somehow slipped into the meeting and recorded it, although Rogin has declined to discuss his sources.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll has good news for Republicans. By 53-39 percent, registered voters would rather see Republicans in control of Congress as a check on Obama. Also, after brief recoveries last month, both the President's and Obamacare's favorables are sinking once again.

There were some great questions in last week's Ask the Blog mailbag. Keep 'em coming.

6 From the excremental poll mentioned above: "Partisan divisions are 32-21-38 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents". Well then- despite everyone hating earflaps and the rest of the dumbs, somehow there is an ELEVEN point advantage for dumbocrats. Pffft. Put the splits where they need to be, and barky would be mid 30's in approval numbers.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Settle down with a cup of coffee, tea or whatever, and I’ll tell you a Susan Hayward story:

By the spring of 1974, Hayward had been seriously ill for months.  A tumor had formed on the left side of her brain and was spreading rapidly to the right side.  She had seizures almost hourly, lasting from five to ten minutes at a time.

It so happened that the Academy sent her an invitation – more as a courtesy, really – to present the Best Actress award.  Because of her condition, nobody really expected her to accept, but to everyone’s surprise, she did.

Determined to look spectacular, she called her friend, designer Nolan Miller, who designed her a high-necked full length gown made of black sequins, hiding her paralyzed right hand beneath points of black lace.  Hayward then contacted Frank Westmore, of the famous makeup dynasty,* asking him to do her face the afternoon of the broadcast.  As Westmore recalled later, it was one of the hardest jobs he had ever done; although the tumor had done slight damage to her face, Hayward’s cobalt treatments had destroyed her beautiful red hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, so that the makeup artist had to recreate the “Susan Hayward” look of 30 years before, topping it off with [i“the goddamndest. . .wig they ever made.”[/i]  He worked for hours until it was time for them to leave.

Once at the ceremony, just before going onstage, a doctor injected Hayward with a massive dose of Dilaudid to ward off seizures.  David Niven announced her name and she began shaking; Charlton Heston (who had been her co-star in 1953s The President’s Lady) took her arm and whispered, “Easy, girl.”  The two then walked slowly to the podium as the audience rose for a massive standing ovation.  Hayward was a little unsteady, but she managed to read the names of the nominees and announce that Glenda Jackson had won for A Touch of Class.

Regally, she made her way backstage again, completely drained.  “Well,” she said, “that’s the last time I pull that off.”

Later that evening, she collapsed in a seizure.  By the summer she was confined to a wheelchair.  On March 14, 1975, she died.

Here’s Hayward at the Awards:

And here she is in a studio portrait:

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Frank’s father, George, founded the first movie makeup department in 1917 at the Selig studio.  His six sons all followed him in the trade, becoming chief makeup artists at Warner’s, Universal, Twentieth Century and Paramount.  The 1976 book The Westmores of Hollywood is a fascinating, gossipy look at their lives and loves.

Meanwhile in California, Team GOP Governor candidate Neel Kashkari has picked up a big primary endorsement from Mitt "Electable" Romney. Kashkari also revealed that former President George W. Bush “has been very helpful and made calls and opened doors” for the campaign.

Kashkari is the former Goldman banker who ran the TARP program.  Neel also voted for Obama in 2008, according to  Kashkari because he was getting better economic advice than John McCain.

And:

Bowing to pressure from abortion-rights groups, Google is removing advertisements from its site for “crisis pregnancy centers” that discourage people from having abortions. NARAL Pro-Choice America had pushed for Google to take down the ads, arguing they violated the Web giant’s advertising policy.

National Right to Life Committee President Carol Tobias said that the resource centers are used by many pregnant women who would be hurt by Google's action. "Google is waging a war on women by limiting knowledge of the options and services available to women," she said in an email to The Hill.  "Google's decision to refuse ads by the centers is unconscionable."

She kept saying she's not focused on it, instead saying she is building a center-right coalition. She pretends she didn't know anything about what Boehner said, even though the hosts played the clip for her. Kept trying to steer the convo to "jobs." That's one character, MP4, rising from her terminally ill death bed for her last appearance on red carpet. I'd like to imagine her film opportunities a generation and a half later, instead of on safari or pioneering S.Africa, playing the lead role that put Signourney on the map.  I can see Susan Hayword in the transformer machine combating the "bitch" Alien from hell (aka outer space).

So, are the great Westmore make-up dynasty painting politicians' faces these days? Or, the point these days is to look robotic, numbed down to dead pan faces, as if not to give away any "tells" -- as if eyes and the rest of body language aren't still part of that quotient.

You might as well say that about ANY "Republican" from MA.

We have a fairly decent state rep. from my district who claims to be a Republican, but he keeps his conservatism -- if any -- pretty well muted. Other than that, it's mostly hacks to the left (and far left) of Devil Patrick.

There must be one or two non-liberals in this state, though. Otherwise, the Boston Herald would be out of business.

A nice thought, maybe, but no one learns from that attitude, especially in the current D.C. climate.

Choom Boy has already "fallen down," repeatedly, and should be removed from office, imprisoned, and subjected to humiliation and ostracism for the rest of his teat-sucking life.

We no longer believe in suffering consequences for illegal/immoral actions. Everything is forgiven, excuses are made. There might be one or two elected officials in D.C. who should not be caged right now, but I'm damned if I can think of who they are.

I came across mention of Kerry's grotesque speechifying, while researching who then heck Clooney's fiancee really is.

So Forbes lists her credentials; of her publications she's CO-edited articles that omit the name of the real editor: Expanding Jurisdiction over War Crimes under Article 8 of the ICC Statute, Journal of International Criminal Justice (2010) 8 (5): 1219-1243. I needed a subscription to read more info, and haven't.

International Lawyer And Scholar Amal Alamuddin Engaged To George Clooney
This engagement is really funny if it didn't seem sinister in PR (propaganda) appeal. So one of the Lebanese born beauty's spectacular specialties is entertainment law. Does that explain why she clerked for Sotomayor in NY?

-- Back to the quote from Kerry -- in a similar article that came up online search, same journal of int. criminal justice. Evidently, for propaganda gravitas, Kerry's speech writer lifted the words from the UN excuses for military interventionism to assert (libelous) against Syrian President Assad. All you need, in the political game book starting wars, is to send in a black ops, blame your opponent for your own crime against humanity posed against him (never 'moi?'), and use the magic trigger words, and whoopie -- another "well intended" never ending war is "excused" by the UN or whoever benefits from such (insulated insider string pullers).

Where thinkers take Obama's "words, just words" to justify obscene power grabs with indiscriminate suffering inflicted on most people on earth, "for their own good" as they're told. Read and bleed. Arbeit Macht Frei, or far worse: insubordination to the bullies is reason enough for your termination. Your remains are buried under choice trigger words. Selected quotes follow.

"Syria and the Semantics of Intervention, Aggression and Punishment: On ‘Red Lines’ and ‘Blurred Lines’"

By Carsten Stahn, Professor of International Criminal Law and Global Justice, Leiden University.

Intro

On 21 August 2013, chemical weapons were used against civilians in the Ghouta area of Damascus. ... The nature of the attack has sparked fresh debate concerning the normative regime governing the prohibition of the use of chemical weapons and the remedies available to sanction violations of that prohibition, including recourse to the threat or use of force. One of the most striking features in this discussion has been the mixture of semantics relating to intervention. Vocabularies governing the use of force have generally been distinct in the realms of international humanitarian law and international criminal law. In the past years, however, they have become increasingly mixed. Perhaps the most well-known example is the use of the label of international crimes as a trigger for human security responses under the concept of the Responsibility to Protect. The Syrian context illustrates the risks of the merger between these different fields. Rationales and justifications of criminal law are being used to promote the use of force. This is a dangerous tendency — and maybe one of the unintended side effects of the rise of international criminal law in past decades. | The language related to the justification of intervention in Syria is replete with references to notions of accountability, deterrence and punishment. ... Kerry linked the moral legitimacy of the alleged response to the idea that ‘there must be accountability for those who would use the world’s most heinous weapons against the world’s most vulnerable people’. ... At the same time, criminal justice labels (‘beyond reasonable doubt’) were used in relation to issues of proof. ... | But the consequence of this approach, the idea of ‘punishing’ a regime for unlawful action under jus in bello through resort to the threat or use of force without a collective security mandate, is flawed. This discourse conflates two layers of legal reasoning, .... This limits the possibility of using military intervention as a tool to sanction violations of the ‘red line’ outside the collective security system. More fundamentally, the policy case in favour of intervention mixed two levels of discussions that have been separated for good reasons in the past decade: state responsibility for an international wrongful act and individual criminal responsibility for international crimes. ...

I appreciate Cruz' talents in presenting precise arguments so clearly that even juvenile minds comprehend.

To think that Cruz doesn't give a damn about consequences is an opinion I don't share. It is precisely because he cares about consequences that he frames his arguments, his position and agenda so succinctly, and does not deviate from his record protecting constitutional integrity.

However, his wife is with the Federal Reserve. Since I absolutely oppose that private global transnational financial corporation that our government's officers have GIVEN all power (owner of the economy owns the nation and people), I keep a wary eye on all politicians.

222 Windows phone I have a windows phone (and used the developer preview to update it to windows phone 8.1) and it's great. The only thing lacking are some apps. Not so much the big name ones, but a lot of times you'll see "download our app" but that, 90% of the time, means either iPhone or Android app, and not windows. To tell the truth, I don't actually use too many apps anyhow, and most of the big name ones have support.

237 Kerry also received an apology from the Trilateral Commission ... since apparently such appearances are intended to be kept off the record and out of the ears of the public So it's really much like the Donald Sterling situation. It's not that they didn't mean exactly what they said, it's just unfortunate (for them) that their unguarded moments were made public. Maybe Sterling should try the same excuse: "I will not allow my commitment to [black people] to be questioned."

248 I actually used the people hub, so not having twitter and facebook tied in would be a step backwards I don't actually use twitter, but the facebook data is still feeding through to the hub, kinda. It's actually going to my notifications now, which is odd (and I had to tone it down) because every time one of my friends posted on facebook my phone would alert me. The Cortana assistant is waaaaay better than just a Siri clone by the way. I was testing it out and asked it to "remind my to call parents when I get home" and I walked in my door and my phone did the alert chirp at me. Pretty nice. I did notice that some of the apps were acting up a little with 8.1. Notably my gps maps were being a bit flaky and not updating properly for turn vs turn about half the time. I'm chalking that up to the new OS.

That WZ link is hilarious.  Dhimmi Earl should never talk about women's issues because I think he's as obsessed with cooter as Slick.  I think Rosalyn cut him off after the old goat jizzed her up with Amy, a good argument against having children too late in life.  He was interviewed in Playboy, the gentleman's literary magazine::eyeroll::, where he talked about suffering from "adultery of the heart".  Every time he visits some tinpot dictator he can't resist talking about whatever bangtoy is the current squeeze.  I'm surprised he doesn't spank it in public.

251 North American Aviation, in its heyday, was a mostly-owned subsidiary of General Motors. GM sure had a lot of different aviation departments, for a car company.

But that might account for the bizarre labor relations climate. Just before WWII, NA's union leadership was an absolute communist front group.
