Happy Monday.

Sec. Kerry told world leaders on Friday that Israel would become an "apartheid state" if it didn't make peace with the people lobbing rockets at it. Then State Department spokesjoke Jen Psaki defended her boss' inflammatory claim by citing to reputable foreign policy outlets DailyKos and Think Progress.

Toyota is moving its sales and marketing headquarters from California to Texas. "A company can easily see where it would benefit by relocating someplace else," said the Torrance, California mayor.

The Supreme Court will hear argument on Tuesday about cell phone searches incident to arrest.

Oh, you recall District Court Judge Leon's decision finding the NSA's phone metadata program unlawful? At the time, I criticized the decision on several grounds, noting in an aside that "it's been a while since I've seen a court decision with that many exclamation marks." Well, the latest document release from the FISA Court includes a decision taking Judge Leon's decision apart, and it includes an aside directed at his hyperbolic use of exclamation points and italics.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Today I’ve got a William Holden story.

This took place during the filming of 1955s Picnic.  It seems that, by this time, the shooting had got to the Labor Day picnic that is the center of the movie.  Holden – who had been warming up the ice cubes since before he left the set that day – was hosting a party in his fourteenth-room hotel suite.  Watching him interact with the cast and crew, joking and laughing, director Josh Logan suddenly got an idea.

“I need to film you in action some way tomorrow at the picnic.  Do you suppose you could do any kind of gymnastic trick?”

Holden smiled.  “My father was a gym teacher.”

“Good,” Logan replied.  “So you can stand on your hands?”

“I stood on my hands on top of that big Aurora Bridge in Pasadena,” Holden answered, “and it made my brother so mad he got arrested.”

“Bill, you’ve had too many martinis.”

“No.  My brother wanted to prove to my father that he was better than I, so he did a handstand on the Brooklyn Bridge and got arrested, so they would notify my father.”

Logan, who had a fear of heights, suddenly turned gray.  “You mean, way up high?”

“What’s the matter?” Holden asked.  “Don’t you like heights?  I mean, for instance - ”

At that, Holden, carrying a martini, walked over to the windowsill, opened the window, climbed out and – holding himself from the fourteenth-floor drop by resting his bent left elbow over the sill – raised his glass to Logan.  “Is this the kind of thing you mean, Josh?” he cried, legs swinging in the air.

Logan dropped to the floor.  “Get him back, somebody.  Get him back, get him back in!”

Co-star Rosalind Russell – no slouch with the drinks herself – came to the rescue.  “Bill, dear, we’re getting pretty bored with that athletic stuff.  Get the hell back in here, Bill, get back in here before I drop dead.”

“I’ll come back if you make Josh watch,” Holden challenged.  So they did, and he did.

Logan, his stomach churning from vertigo, decided to go down to the hotel lobby for a while.  When he got there, he ran into Holden’s co-star Kim Novak, coming back from midnight Mass.

“You won’t believe what I think I just saw,” she told the director.  “When I got out of my car, I happened to look up, and halfway up I thought I saw a man hanging out of the window.  But of course, I probably didn’t.”

“Oh, really?” Logan replied.  “I wonder who that could have been – that is, if you really saw anyone.”

“Well, you know, it’s funny,” Novak went on, “but the way he moved and the way he kind of hung there so calmly, I thought just for a minute, ‘That’s Bill Holden’”

So here’s a little beefcake for the ‘ettes:  our man Bill:

68 Morning, Glories! I've read up to Poppin's H'wood tale, but before I refresh my coffee and read of our moral superiors in theatre... and comments beyond... I just finished reading this article, linked to on the ONT by GnuBreed. It case it hasn't been mentioned: «Another Holocaust remembrance story, about the 'Japanese Schindler' via Tammy Bruce: http://tinyurl.com/luzg58w » I never knew about this. As always, the scale defies belief. And every death was one individual just like this one who lived: «The woman bent down, and kissed the hem of my mother’s dress. “You saved us,” she said.» And yet... «My mother looked at me with a terrible sadness that I will always remember. If she had really believed the man, she said, she could have sold her wedding ring, to save others.» I think the most telling line must be this all too frequent view: «Everyone was shocked. Surely, this man was exaggerating. Maybe even crazy. Germany — the most cultured of countries — How could this be?» So, at least, it could never happen here....

Entire crew blown to smithereens in an instant. Body parts of two (identified by finger prints) that blew onto other ships were the only human remains recovered for burial from the USS Paul Hamilton.

The USS Paul Hamilton
April 20, 1944
Mediterranean

"One Torpedo, 580 men and 7000 tons of explosives"

The sixty two ships of convoy UGS 38 were off the coast of Algiers on the fateful evening. The SS Paul Hamilton was headed for the Anzio bridge head which was surrounded by strong German forces.

Our troops were so hard pressed that many of the 504 Army Air Corp men aboard had been retrained in mine demolition work for the planned break out.

For more efficient shipping logistics the brass had decided to keep the men and their 7000 tons of explosives together in the same unarmored ship, where one hot tracer round could blow them all to smithereens.

The flash stunned everyone. When combat cameraman Al Green’s eyes reopened he watched the mushroom cloud rise up from what had been the SS Paul Hamilton, and snapped his famous shot. Green recounted that the Hamilton explosion lasted six to seven seconds and then everything went dark again. More explosions were heard as four more ships were struck.

The destroyer Lansdale was sunk, and the damaged Royal Star sank the next day. Both the damaged Samite M/V and Stephen F. Austen M/V were successfully towed to Algiers. Green saw one plane go down.

The brass knew there were no survivors on the Hamilton. They had the photo of what can happen with their hybrid troop and ammo ships.

No apologies or explanations were ever forthcoming as to why the whole 50 year classification period was allowed to run. Many of the parents of these KIAs passed away never knowing exactly how their sons died.

"They died together: the vagaries of war can defeat us in a matter of days."

95 Torrance is going to take a BIG hit from losing Toyota. IIRC, Honda's nearby HQ is bigger, but Toyota employs a shit-ton of people and covers a lot of acreage.

It made sense for the Japanese to locate in the LA area back in the 60s and 70s, but not now. Nissan went away first, then Subaru, and now Toyota. Honda won't be far behind. Lots of empty buildings and houses/apartments to come.

Another victory for Moonbeam Brown and the Democrats!

129 WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to destroy more than $1 billion worth of ammunition although some of those bullets and missiles could still be used by troops, according to the Pentagon and congressional sources. It's impossible to know what portion of the arsenal slated for destruction — valued at $1.2 billion by the Pentagon — remains viable because the Defense Department's inventory systems can't share data effectively, according to a Government Accountability Office report obtained by USA TODAY. The result: potential waste of unknown value. "There is a huge opportunity to save millions, if not billions of dollars if the (Pentagon) can make some common-sense improvements to how it manages ammunition," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., and chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. "Despite years of effort, the Army, Navy and Air Force still don't have an efficient process for doing something as basic as sharing excess bullets. This Government Accountability Office (GAO) report clearly shows that our military's antiquated systems lead to millions of dollars in wasteful ammunition purchases." Instead of wasting millions on worthless GMTs and other Taskers, get this straightened out. NOW

132 A pre D-Day tragedy. In the early hours of April 28, 1944 at Slapton Sands (SW coast of England) during Exercise Tiger, a dress rehersal for the 4th Infantry Division's Utah Beach landing, nine German torpedo boats (E Boats) attacked the formation. Two LSTs were sunk and a third was damaged. 749 sailors and soldiers died. Later that day 200-300 soldiers were killed on the beach from "friendly fire." http://tinyurl.com/km6vzxy Kept secret until after the D-Day landings, Exercise Tiger's casualties were reported in August, 1944. But due to all the other news from France it was ignored and forgotten by most. Many lessons were learned and applied to the D-Day landings which no doubt saved many lives.

Toyota will build a headquarters in Plano about 1m to 1.5m square feet. Approximately the same size as the massive State Farm insurance complex in Richardson. Of course, they will seek incentives from Plano and Texas, which will be negotiated and then granted. No mention of how many of the 4,000 employees will move to Texas, but the ones that do are going to be stupefied to discover the size house they can buy for the same money as the one they lived in while residing in Mexifornia. Not to mention the cost of living, period. Oh, did I forget to mention NO STATE INCOME TAX.

We have room (actually, a ton of room) for anyone else who might want to escape to the Republic.
