Time Magazine, Concern-Trolling for Holy Thursday: "Can Your Child Be Too Religious?"
— Ace

I assure you the timing is purely coincidental.

I had wanted to link this when it posted, but I didn't want to give Time the concern-trolling hit-whoring traffic. So here's Newsbusters.

[I]f your child is immersed in scripture after school and prays regularly throughout the day, you may breathe a sigh of relief. She’s such a good girl. My boy is okay.

Or maybe not. Your child’s devotion may be a great thing, but there are some kids whose religious observances require a deeper look. For these children, an overzealous practice of their family faith — or even another faith — may be a sign of an underlying mental health issue or a coping mechanism for dealing with unaddressed trauma or stress.

Therapists in private practice report that they are seeing children and teens across a range of faiths whose religious practice can be problematic. The amount of time they spend praying, or in other acts of spiritual practice, is not as important, they say, as the quality of this devotion, and whether it helps the children or instead isolates them and undermines their schoolwork and relationships. Children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), for example, may rigidly repeat holy verses, say Hail Mary’s or focus on other rituals less out of a deeper sense of faith but more as an expression of their disorder. “It looks positive but could be negative,” says Stephanie Mihalas, a UCLA professor and licensed clinical psychologist.

Obviously this is a story that could have been published at any time. They chose to publish it right before Easter just to garner some hits. Interest in Christian-related stories spikes twice a year, Easter and Christmas.

But the publicization of these stories, and these books, and these plays based on books, during Holy Week is purely coincidental.

One of the interesting historic trends we see in America... is that Americans tend to bend over backwards NOT to get angry.... but when they do, they over react.

The Civil War, and Aftermath, destroyed the South for generations...

In WWII.... we not only did the 1000 plane raid and firebombed Dresden, but dropped the bomb.... TWICE.

After 9/11, our Govenment and media activly tried to stop our anger... going so far as to not play the tapes of the Planes hitting the towers...

The question now becomes.... how long will the Christians of America take people attacking them.... without loosing their Temper... and what will be the aftermath.

The media, and Washington... is poking a stick at a sleeping bear.... because see??? its still asleep....

The amount of time they spend praying, or in other acts of spiritual practice, is not as important, they say, as the quality of this devotion, and whether it helps the children or instead isolates them and undermines their schoolwork and relationships.

So   in other words,   they aren't talking about the children being religious.  They're talking about the children    exhibiting pathological behavior, which may or may not be religious in nature.   So in other words, religion has absolutely nothing to do with it,   but it's a "hot button" issue, so we'll make it the lede.

Fuck I hate these people.

Hey, here's an idea.   Replace all references to "religion"    in this piece with    "video games,"    "exercise,"       "overeating,"    or    "hanging upside down from the monkey bars."      Does it change the meaning of the story one g-ddamn bit?

No.  It doesn't.      You might as well just talk about cutting,    or anorexia, or bulimia, or   autoerotic asphyxiation,    because it's    all    the same thing:   self harm through abnormal behavior.

But none of those would make soccer moms raise their eyebrows in surprise and go, "Maybe letting little    Suzy go to Bible Study three times a week is a bad thing!"

Next up    from TIME magazine:   "Is your son or daughter doing something     repetetive     that may be    harming his or her relationships?    He or she may have a problem!"

FUCK.  I HATE THESE PEOPLE.

68 46 My son prays to the President five times daily....too religious Al-Time? Actually, this is said by some of the older generation of Muslims. I remember hearing a story about some young jihadi. Do you remember the one who was turned in by his own father and the US authorities ignored the warnings? One of the things he'd said is that his kid was getting too religious. When a Jewish or Christian kid gets "too religious" they might get a bit withdrawn or awkward or they might pull away from their friends and family too much. When a Muslim or Marxist kid gets "too religious", time to install metal detectors.

What I learned from that was that Jesus was gay.

Not bad-gay, with the brutal giant-dicked ass-fucking and meth-sweat and super-manliness, but good-gay, sitting with his legs crossed in a pistachio-walled conservatory with worn-leather sofas and ethnic touches that could have been conjured by Ralph Lauren.

In After Virtue Alasdair MacIntyre describes Therapists as mere "efficiency experts" whose job it is not to get you to being a well functioning person but what you the patient think is a well functioning person (he notes these are two distinctly different things.)

I think he was half wrong on that.  In current society the job of a therapist is to push what progressives think is a well functioning person onto other people.  Which is just sad.

90 Children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), for example, may rigidly repeat sura from the Koran, repeat hadith's or focus on other rituals less out of a deeper sense of faith but more as an expression of their disorder. “It looks positive but could be extremely super dooper positive” says Stephanie Mihalas, a UCLA professor and licensed clinical psychologist.

108 And I'm betting that the people who push this train of thought view themselves as being non-judgemental. I grew up as a Catholic around a lot of people who were strict, bible thumping, fundamentalist Protestants. These were people who wouldn't work on Sunday, wouldn't allow their children to ride their bikes on Sunday, wouldn't go to movies, didn't drink alcohol, didn't play cards, didn't dance. They did spend a lot of time praying and reading the Bible, and many of them went to church twice on Sunday. I have a lot of respect for them. They had the backbone to stand up for what they believed in, and went against the popular culture, which is a very difficult thing to do.

170 Imagine an America
Where strip mines are fun and free
Where gays can be fixed
And sick people just die
And oil fills the sea

We don’t have to pay for freeways!
Our schools are good enough
Give us endless wars
On foreign shores
And lots of Chinese stuff

We’re the children of the future
American through and through
But something happened to our country
And we’re kinda blaming you

We haven’t killed all the polar bears
But it’s not for lack of trying
The Earth is cracked
Big Bird is sacked
And the atmosphere is frying

Congress went home early
They did their best we know
You can’t cut spending
With elections pending
Unless it’s welfare dough

We’re the children of the future
American through and through
But something happened to our country
And we’re kinda blaming you

Find a park that is still open
And take a breath of poison air
They foreclosed your place
To build a weapon in space
But you can write off your au pair

It’s a little awkward to tell you
But you left us holding the bag
When we look around
The place is all dumbed down
And the long term’s kind of a drag

We’re the children of the future
American through and through
But something happened to our country
And yeah, we’re blaming you

You did your best
You failed the test

Mom and Dad
We’re blaming you!

And we all know liberalism is their religion.

Calling out other people h8ters and racists is their way of praying and expressing devotion.  I bet in their eyes you can never be too liberal.

189 Yeah, my child is too religious. He knows the 10 Commandments, he says the Rosary with his family, and he goes to Mass at least twice a week. That's just, well, too religious.

Except it ain't.

He's Catholic, and proud of it.

Time Magazine can bite my Catholic ass.

In a few years, Christianity will be considered a mental disorder. Schools will medicate any children who express Christian ideas, and CPS will remove them from their parents. It will be considered child abuse to teach religion to children.

192 Well, my lib ("proud socialist") sister finally got a nice job in an ad agency, after some freelance writing she'd done in an ATL publication garnered some attention.  In particular, an "edgy" piece she did mocking the new Pope.

She's a talented writer, but it nauseates me that she finally got a well-paying job because fellow travelers loved her "work" on the Pope.

Raised as I was in the Buckle of the Bible belt, we had  our share of zealots  who went a tad overboard on religion. We called them "Jesus freaks."  Most of them looked like hippies, but talked about nothing but their  church.  In retrospect, I guess you could say they were a tad OCD, but no one thought about it that way back then.  We just let them do their thing   and we did ours. Never was it implied by anyone that there was anything   wrong with them, as this article does.

Now, don't get me wrong, I went to Young Life as a high-schooler. We mainly had low-key studies of Biblical verse, but we also sang a lot and generally just hung  out together without  any sexual pressure, since we met in a church basement on Tuesdays. Knowing that  The Big Guy was   right upstairs tends to do that.

Anyway, this Time article really smells like bullshit, especially the timing and the noticeable lack of any mention of any other religion, specifically one that encourages its practicioners  to pray in a certain direction towards some rock five times a day,  separates boys from girls (so's as not to hear their screams when they get  their genitals mutilated, I guess) and don't teach them anything else about modern life, like how to use toilet paper.

I  had thought there would be open rebellion before even the present time.  Now I'm not so sure.  My fear is that even the patriots have  been cowed into  non-action.  The relentless slobering by the MFM and even the people on our side about solving this non-violently has pretty much taken any ambition away from  doing what will eventually  need  to be done.

This is one  of the things about Beck's philosophy that I totally disagree with.  Act like Ghandi?  Fuck you.

Folks, the zero administration went to the Supreme Court and argued that a religious institution could not choose who it did, and did not, want to lead its congregation.

You read that right, zero argued that a gay muslim should have a chance to be a United States Cardinal in the Catholic Church.

They were rebuked 9-0.

But still, they made that fucked up argument in the first place.  Scary enough.

215 I see a series of ... "If your kid hasn't tried gay sex with a teacher by 6th grade, he may be too religious" ... 'you may be a redneck' type responses.

Christian kids should be very well adjusted and accept others, while having standards.  How can anyone be "too well adjusted?"

The the leftist religion is ... no standards.  Anything goes ... anything except Christians that have standards, or a country that has laws that uphold any traditional values, based on thousands of years of western civilization.

War first? I heard the same thing about gay marriage back circa 1990. The cultural devolution of this country is becomming so accelerated I can't believe it. If you're old enough (I'm 46, and that's but a babe in the woods), just think about how far we've gone in the sewer in the last 20 years, what would've been unthinkable now is the norm.

In 20 years, poly-"marriage" will be perfectly normal and you'll be an intolerant bigot if you oppose it. Hell throw Fido and Fluffy the cat in there to. And pedophilia will be well on its way to being mainstreamed. We were born this way, you're a bigot to discrimate against us. You're already seeing the foundation being laid in various academic haunts.

It's the schools and the media pop culture. Those have got to be destroyed. But I fear it's too late anyway.

I'm feeling right now like our forebears thought several hundred years ago when they decided to leave Europe and head over here. I wish there was some new New World I could flee to and leave this rotting wreck of a once great country behind.

218 “It looks positive but could be negative,” says Stephanie Mihalas, a UCLA professor and licensed clinical psychologist. I'll bet it's a big fat negative. A negative to your bank account, that is. A religious person is much more likely to visit their spiritual guide and not their shrink.
