"The Tyranny of Choice" and the Loki-ite Left
— Ace

A left that is unashamed to speak pretty openly about simply removing decision-making from people, on the theory that thought, decisions, choice, and accountability cause anxiety and mental unwellness and that people should be told what to do, because they will be happier as children or pets.

And if you think that sounded better in the original Norse, I agree.

13 Actually, I agree with her statement that capitalism has a pacifying effect. When everybody is rich (or busy getting rich) fewer of them have the desire (or the time) to go killing their fellow man. Especially on any massive scale. The reason the US has been the most passive "Empire" in the history of the world is that we're too busy making money to bother with waging war (most of the time).

21 Just because individuals may be overloaded by choice doesn't mean that they can avoid the situation to own up to it. Further, society is benefitted by the general ability as what may fluster one will incrementally inform through many. And I get the same thing over and over because I like it. Just because you can be overloaded in the choice of similar things doesn't mean you can't be happy. Tyranny opposes choice... Freedom may raise it to a cacophony but we adapt. If anything the stressor to be more correct than others a stressor that will not go away even a society of limitations. Otherwise why ever take an examination.

It's only the revolting Left and their consumate desire to turn everything into a collective (with the Vanguards of the Left leading, of course) that are perpetually miserable and want to make everyone else miserable. And now, everyone is wanting to march in the streets and jam their opinion down everyone else's throat because freedom as we knew it is rapidly evaporating, and everything is up for grabs.

Add in that bad choices you make get a gubmint intervention to save you from yourself  -- you bought an overpriced house, you built in a flood zone, you didn't take care of your health so now they have to sell you insurance anyhow, you didn't think it was important to acquire any useful skills so now the gubmint will provide you with unending food and shelter, also on and on.

These are the kind of things you do for your children. The difference is, you expect your children to learn how to protect and provide for themselves and learn from their mistakes or the help eventually ends.

Posted by: chaz at June 27, 2013 05:05 PM (sSNkG)

That isn't technically true since Marx didn't believe free will exists in the first place (it's a specifically Christian concept implicitly recognizing the existence of God); hence, capacity for a nonexistent anything would be superfluous.  Marx was a materialist, not a determinist. Your statement about Marx's view of individual choices is also conceptually incorrect since he believed that, yes, human beings can change circumstances and situations. Since we (humanity) have influence over events, we are not (exactly) slaves to blind forces of history although we were/are subject to the thesis/antithesis/synthesis of his dialectic.

176 "I try to avoid places like Subway, and if I end up there I always order the same thing."

The argument is about freedom to choose, and she always chooses the same thing and that's bad because...

Had an eye-twitch moment when reading an article about mothers who couldn't get an abortion.

In the comments, a man raised by a single mother argued that his mother would have been better off aborting him - then she wouldn't have struggled with the bills, and could "have him later" when her life was more stable.

I really wanted to point out the fatal flaw in his thinking ...

I know that many of these Marxists operate from the assumption that because our society is shaped and controlled by the upper class, that we feel free, but our choices are constrained to that which keeps the bourgeois in power. Thus, we don't really have a choice that matters, right?

But wherever these lying sacks of Marxist shit go, they institute a system that does EXACTLY what they claim we do, and twin it with brutal repression. Meanwhile, the West is drowning in choices, but somehow we're less free than the poor peasant in North Korea who has to choose between a dirt salad and eating grandma.

A shitload of truth there. Junk yards used to actually dismantle cars and and tag and shelve the useful stuff, ( radiators, starters, alternators, doors, fenders, etc). Then it morphed into, "yeah I got one somewhere in the back, take it off yourself", and half the times it was the wrong car. Then it became well if it can't be fixed and sold we'll just crush the whole thing..

Working on new cars isn't too bad mechanically, but electrically they are nightmare. (Thank you EPA for cars having more sensors than the fucking star ship enterprise )

Forget the FSA, 99% of them couldn't start a frigging lawnmower anyway, never mind knowing which end of the tool to hold.

But the flip side are increased feelings of anxiety, guilt and inadequacy at facing the possibility of not “making it” — that is, not reaching the ideal...Ultimately this has made us unable to move toward social change; our abundance of choices has made us politically passive." I don't think anybody could look at the history of the United States and honestly say that we've been unable to move toward social change. She's either deluded herself or she's lying to her listeners. If she really thinks having to make choices in life reduces mental health, she should try evaluating the mental health of people raised in an environment were they are not allowed any choices. I'll chip in twenty bucks towards a 1-way flight to North Korea so she can get started on that right away.

306 It is paralyzing to have to make choices that you are unequipped to make. This is true, inasmuch as you are aware that or care that you could have made a better choice (example: get your young child to make lots of choices. They don't seem to get stressed about it at all!)

But isn't this simply a problem of mass capitalism and democracy? In other words, our system was not designed for everyone to vote, but rather, that stakeholders from everywhere who had skin in the game (so not just the political class) would make the choices. In the same way most guys let their wife choose the drapes, people who had some means of understanding their choices and were equipped to make them, made them. The same goes for buying stuff. If you're not equipped to figure out what condiments to get at Subway, have your boyfriend decide for you. The whole idea is to just pick what you like, not to try to maximize your benefit...!

It's like because Marxists couldn't show that the proles were so bad under capitalism that they would automatically form socialism, they had to (in our case) twist capitalism into such a perverted knot so that the people would finally reject it?

The irony is, they will reject it for real capitalism.

(AP) — A man's decision to fly a Nazi flag outside his Connecticut home has prompted a visit from police. WVIT reports that Joseph Sincavage put up the flag Sunday next to a U.S. flag, a Marine Corps flag and a Vatican flag. Police came to his door Wednesday to investigate a complaint from neighbors. Jeff Jones, who also lives on Connors Lane, said he believes the flag is racist and pure evil, and those living on the road should not be forced to look at it. Sincavage, who flew a Confederate flag in the same spot several months ago, said flying the flag is his way of protesting the policies of President Obama. He said he has no plans to take it down. ________________________________ Hate to break it to you, leftards, but you can't use state action, i.e., the police or courts, to prevent his guy from exercising his free speech, i.e., flying flag.

336 Back around Christmas I stood in Walmart with my sister looking at TVs. 'There are too many choices," she said, 'but I can get a lot of TV for my money no matter what I decide to buy."

Why do I never hear about giving up some of those sorts of choices? It's always another little bit of my freedom being taken away because the likes of St. Trayvon's girlfriend might suffer angst if she ever had to make a real decision.

337 Is that the (Inconvenient) truth? I just got a 'bye' on Pa state emission testing because of low mileage. I've had a steady 'check engine' light for the past 12 months on a car I hardly use. O2 (carbon dioxide) is a by-product of good combustion. O (carbon monoxide) a product of bad combustion. I think I need some more edumacation. Posted by: Name Withheld Upon Request at June 27, 2013 05:54 PM (U2UQk) There are actually some cars that have the computer set to automatically kick the engine light on at 75,000 miles just so you change a few sensors, but yes. The O2 sensors are usually the first that need changing.

Well, in our brave new world, we now have the freedom to choose not to be hungry, so I guess I'll be OK. Isn't real choice great!?!?

Posted by: WolfinNC at June 27, 2013 12:57 PM (HVOxM)

344 To be fair, it's not the trauma of the choices of life which The Left wishes to avoid for folks, and by proxy, themselves, or even the consequences. They're never wrong and always ready with an excuse. It's that others will show them up. What was the point of going to grad school and swinging that public salary and lifetime security if no one can appreciate how smart you are because your hustling, hash-slinging next door neighbor with the nicer house keeps driving around, wowing the block with a snazzier, newer car every six months? Trickle-up misery. It's not trauma, it's resentment.

347 Pursuit of happiness is a stress trap. Free will is the path to misery. Consequences are for suckers. Free stuff for the herd; but not much beyond a cell phone, rent assistance, medical care lotteries, and an EMT card. And stop your sniveling you morons... free MLB and netflix is too expensive. And turn off your damn computers and take the time to imagine how happy you'll be in a sex marriage.

You're in the forest, again. Look at the trees.

-They overwhelmed The People with choices from religion to sexual orientation to useless college degrees to types of government to health insurance to cars to food to lifestyles to television.

-Now guess who comes to the rescue to free you from all this stressful burden -- the ones who dumped it upon in the first place.

352 When did politics become the avenue to handle your personal neuroses and general insanity? From Obama's Mom-hating, lack-o-Daddy issues to this broad's inability to feel happy with the frikkin' sandwich she chooses to eat, when did forcing other people into your weird little box of crazy become the self-treatment of choice? All these people deserve is a hearty point and laugh or a "Go fuck yourself, crazy lady".

1. Introduce and push the 'progressive' agenda.
2. Confuse The People until they believe in nothing, stand for nothing, and know nothing.
3. Take over The People's lives.

355 1. Freedom gives people choice.

2. Some totalitarian comes along and convinces enough idiots that choice is evil and that a chosen few must make the decisions for all because they are the wise ones.

3. Totalitarian wins and enforces his choices on people.

4. People hate the lack of choice and revolt.

5. People take over and institute freedom and choice a similar set of totalitarian rules.  America was different in that they actually did try for freedom.

6. Repeat from 1.

356 312 I haven't watched many TED videos recently. Does this mean they've gone downhill? Anything that people start watching and gets popular will be taken over by leftists. 99% of their idea of fulfilling their civic duty is to make commercials to convince more people to turn into leftists.

361 Strangely enough, Christianity is in partial agreement with this... creature: much freedom is illusive and burdensome, and choices are not the same thing as free will, and, in fact, we do have a Master. And I'm a fan of Christianity, but I'll be damned if I let any mere mortal tell me to relinquish my freedoms because she knows what's better for me.
