Is The Politico Just Making Stuff Up Now?
— DrewM

It's about Sarah Palin, so that makes it cool I guess.

Consider this headline: "Iowa Republicans wince at Sarah Palin's $100K speaking fee"

The Politico story starts...

A conservative Iowa group’s effort to lure Sarah Palin to its banquet next month has had an unintended effect: Rather than exciting conservatives about the prospect of a visit from the former Alaska governor, the group’s plan to raise a six-figure sum to bring her to the state has GOP activists recoiling at the thought of paying to land a politician's speaking appearance.

The Iowa Family Policy Center’s effort to cobble together $100,000 for Palin would represent a striking departure from customary practice in the first-in-the-nation state, these Republicans say, noting that a generation of White House hopefuls has paid their own way to boost their party and presidential ambitions.

Then way down on page 2, in the 24th paragraph of the article we find this little nugget.

There is no indication that the former governor has requested a fee or that her decision whether to attend is being influenced by whether she’ll be paid.

Hello? What's that again? You spend 23 paragraphs telling us how odd it is for a candidate or prospective candidate to charge for an appearance, how some people are put off by this highway robbery and then you get around to mentioning, Palin never asked for the money and there's no reason to believe it will impact her decision to show up?

Jayson Blair emails to say, "Dude, have some integrity".

Can we start doing posts about how writers for certain online publications might be engaged in illicit behavior? Maybe we could fill up the post with quotes from people about how disappointed they are that some political reporters are having, say, intimate relations with, oh I don't know, farm animals. Then after a few hundred words of this I'll drop in something like, "Of course, there's no evidence any of this happening".

Hey Politico, would that make it ok?

Here's a hint...no it wouldn't.

But I'm not talking about making up stories about Sarah Palin so a whole different set of rules apply. You know, the rules that require you don't make stuff up and hit 'publish'.

Let me admit something...I'm agnostic at best on Palin but if the leftists keep acting like she's Holy Water and they are vampires, I'm gonna have to rethink my position.

See what I did there with the "gonna" and not "going to"...I can fit in.

To be clear...she did not ask for the fee according to her people.

It seems some folks wanted to bring her to their event and have heard her fee is 100K. Well, that's apparently for her speaking gigs, like the one in China. He political efforts are separate and funded by her PAC.

But then "Palin Speaks For Free To Conservatives" isn't exactly an earth shattering scoop.

I don't know how much Jonathan Martin makes but if I were his boss I'd wince every time I signed his check. Unless they want to pay for fiction.

They saw how well it worked with Rush and so now they're going to continue doing it with Palin. I really don't know why people are surprised about this. The media is going to keep doing this shit -- to EVERY high profile conservative and Republican -- until the American people aren't dumb enough to believe their lies anymore. Considering our nation is made up of people like the "Obama money" idiot here in the Detroit area, I don't see the media changing their strategy anytime soon. They have won the last 2 election cycles with their lies, smear, libel, slander and vitriol. Most of the nation believes Sarah Palin is an idiot, based on lies and smears of the media. Most of the nation believes our current economic situation is due to "the failed policies of the last 8 years!!!" When most of the nation gets their heads out of their orifices, only then will the enemedia stop this successful tactic of smears, lies, libels, slanders and vitriol against Conservatives and Republicans.

I've been a cynic of the media for as long as I can remember. Watching the cover for the Clinton years and the knee-jerk hostility towards Reagan during his tenure were really the formative years. I knew then that the media was poisonously Left. It has only gotten worse.

So, I'd have to rephrase the question to, "At what point did you begin to require alternate sourcing to anything everything heard on the MSM?" To which I'd say two weeks in to the war in Operation Iraqi Freedom where it was proclaimed to be a quagmire!!eleventy! It was the Vietnam template redux.

My first source now? Blogs. Some radio but mostly blogs. Infinitely more honest and scrutinizable as a group. The instant access of source data via hyperlink and search engine makes MSM obsolete. The unalterable bias of the MSM makes them ignorable.

79 "Let me admit something...I'm agnostic at best on Palin but if the leftists keep acting like she's Holy Water and they are vampires, I'm gonna have to rethink my position."

That is such a great line.  Essentially, Sarah Palin has managed to keep everyone off balance, no one knows what she is going to do next.  No one knows if she is even going to run.  She is a mystery wrapped in an enigma and managing to keep her privacy and her name in the news, constantly.  Friend of mine, a lib, is all excited because ole Levi is making the rounds of the talk shows and apparently "threatening Sarah Palin with divulging some things that she would not like divulged".  My lib friend is literally chomping at the bit.  Can't wait for "the stuff" to come out and assumes that this will dispense with Palin's presidential aspirations once and for all.   My response wasn't what they expected I was like "whatever, she will still make oodels of money with her book after the controversial appearance on oprah and people like you, who barely gave her a second look are now chomping at the bit, you will buy her book, you'll see".   They said "no, no, levi is finally going to reveal her for who and what she is and then gave me a litany of stuff that "the libs" think he is "holding over Sarah's head" (disgusting thing, btw).  My response, "whatever, Sarah Palin can take care of herself, don't underestimate her."

94 OT, but that sidebar article re: individual tax receipts drastically lower because of the "going Galt" effect is a pretty good read.  Interesting comments.

Certainly the unemployment rate has had a significant impact in 2nd/3rdQ '09 receipts.

But one underlying theory-  the business owners and high producers taking Obama/Reid Pelosi at their word leading up to  the election and thus retooling and downsizing in advance of their wealth being stolen redistributed, thus tossing their employees out in the process, is kinda fascinating. Well, to me, at least.

Beck and O'Really disagree with you.  Tonight they said her resigning was "a brilliant move".  I think so too.  she left the state in the capable hands of her lieutenant governor who will have a chance to show how capable he is.  He stopped the lawsuits which were ridiculous and costing the state money and she was able to go out on her own and not be encumbered by being a governor.  So it's all good

136 #130 Here is her explanation.

Katie: So why do you think you can run this country when you bailed on Alaska in a time of economic crisis?

Palin: First off, I left Alaska with a reserve fund to get through hard economic times unlike almost every other state in the union.  Second, I come from a family of modest means unlike some in Congress that have gotten rich by suing hardworking small business owners.  In Alaska you can sue the governor for any reason and that cost comes out of your own pocket.  Since I could not use third party funds, I either had to feed my family  or go bankrupt.

Posted by: Just Another Poster at October 29, 2009 03:40 PM (NgoAe)

137 Sarah's stepping down from the Governorship was a brillant bit of anti-Alinsky judo.  Sitting in Juneau they were free to paint her into a corner, define her, and marginalize her.  Now she has the freedom of movement; she can strike with a twitter, a book, an Oprah appearance, etc. - on her own initiative.  Plus it is going to make her rich, which is another freedom.

Posted by: Jean at October 29, 2009 03:42 PM (xCBQ4)

138 Most of the nation believes Sarah Palin is an idiot, based on lies and smears of the media.

She knows that, and the only way out will be through her own efforts to rehabilitate herself. She's working on it, step by step. Facebook policy posts that actually get Presidential attention; Hong Kong speech; The Book; Oprah; Then the book tour, signings, TV appearances, and later campaign appearances for conservative candidates - especially if ones she endorsed win next month. One step at a time, learning and recalibrating as she goes. I think and hope she succeeds, but in any event it will be fascinating to watch it unfold.

I'm not sure she is presidential material, and if she runs and loses it could have a devastating effect.  I think she works best as a rattler of the monkey cage; it keeps them busy while we actually get something done.

It took Reagan 2+ election cycles to break the stranglehold the Beltway bunch had on the nomination process.  Sarah's young enough and tough enough to take longer than that.

If the country survives, if conservatism as we know it survives, it will be because of her and people like her.

120 I like Romney.I believe he genuinely has become a conservative.I think with the healthcare plan he gave his very liberal public what they wanted to the best of his ability. The fact that it failed just proves what we already knew about socialized medicine.Even a smart guy like Romney couldn't come up with a plan that works.I think that helps our cause.

Let's see if he stops trying to tell people it was a good idea.  If he can bring himself to have that moment of clarity and start telling the truth about socialist medicine, then we've got a candidate on our hands. Definite vice-presidential material here.  Should be a lot easier now that everyone knows that socialist medicine is the kiss of death in more ways than one.

That would be fine if he would admit that it is a colossal failure. Unfortunately he has gone the opposite way; he was happy to take full ownership the last time I heard him talk about it. He still talked it up as a great idea.

What he should have done is said that he was wrong to listen to the "experts" who advised him on the benefits of the plan, admitted that it has been a disaster, and then taken ownership of the issue by saying that he's now a first hand witness of the failure of a government mandated and run healthcare system. He could have inoculated himself from this; unfortunately for him, the voters are really PO'd about this government-run health care scam. If there is a bloodletting next year, Romney's opponents are going to hammer him with Romneycare. He really should have disavowed himself from it the first chance he had.

Re: smearing ja-whore-nalists who smear us:

there is a fundamental problem with that line of attack: There are people in this country who are absolutely incapable of understanding logical arguments; there are other people who can understand the arguments, but will never admit to it; and there are other people who use those first two groups as election-fodder.

We're a center-right country. We've been gulled by the fraudulent leftist inner-city vote-stealing machine for years into giving up power, and the vast majority of Americans (who don't pay attention to politics) get lied to by the MSM that it's all above-board.

We are nearing the tipping point, past which we will never regain the liberty that was the promise of our forerbears, should we only fight for it.

For years, the Republicans have been playing at Debate Society, and the Democrats have been playing Mafia Wars. Mere debate isn't going to un-steal any more elections. We need lawyers to beat the crap out of them. We need thugs to contend with SEIU. We need armies of patriots to nullify their armies of douchebag college students and unemployables.

It's nearly over. Talking won't get us there.

180 In the 90s Bill Maher was making the rounds of college campuses for $12,500 a pop. I'd be willing to bet he charges 3X that by now. But you won't see the current administration or their media (like former prostitute and drug addict Val J ) complaining about that. I'm also sure these stories don't always "just happen". Sure most reporters have the same hate for Palin they had/have for Bush but there is a lot of evidence that the DNC is actually organizing a lot of the demonization; At leastit has been that way in Alaska.

At what point did you begin to require alternate sourcing to anything heard on the MSM?  For me, it was the Rathergate stuff.

For me, it was the early 80s and the media's treatment of Reagan.

When Yuri Androprov became head of the USSR, journalist after journalist wrote columns about how he spoke fluent English and was fond of American culture, and was the sort of guy with whom we could cut a deal. And, of course, flogging Reagan for being so obtuse as to think that the head of the KGB was not necessarily to be trusted.

Then The New Republic, which still actually published journalism in those days, traced the story of the "pro-American" Androprov back to an article in an obscure Polish journal, that somehow was picked up by the wires here. All the wise, informed, fact-checking pundits were saying the same thing because they were reading each other!

Then TNR listed the things we didn't know about Androprov:

- When and where he was born.
- Where he went to college.
- What languages he spoke, besides Russian.
- The name of his wife, or if he was married.

In fact, we knew squat about the guy: the western press published this rubbish over and over again because it made Reagan look bad. No other reason.

Ever since then, I assume that was I read or see in the MSM is a lie, unless I can prove otherwise.

The media can't do that because RomneyCare *IS* ObamaCare, only on a state level (complete with the hefty fines for people who don't want to play the game).

Bashing RomneyCare is the same thing as bashing ObamaCare.  The only ones who can use it against him without dissing Obama are other Republicans in the Primary.

I reached that point already. Vampires actually don't mind Holy Water so much  when compared to the poisonous, life-consuming hate the left holds for Palin.

So I asked myself a few of questions about the sheer volume of hate they have regurgitated on her and her family since she came on the scene.

Is it deserved? No. Is it accurate? No. Is it acceptable? No.

So, I'm a Palin defender now. And proud of it.

214 How can Moderate-Independent voters be reached when everything they know is stuck on stupid?

Obviously baby-steps and sweet-talking have failed; perhaps it is true, pain and misery are the only way to get the obtuse off the fence.

Moderates, if you are willing to burn, loot, pillage your own house just to get abortion and same-sex union between opposite sex then you  might as well learn to love wallowing in your own self-made misery.

Tax-payers are leaving NYC in droves for a reason; we are no longer interested in supporting Moderate's brain-dead stuck-on-stupid serfdom.

Moderates, so much for being part of the cool crowd who will cannibalize you after they take your money.
