The One True Overnight Thread

Groovy Tuesday - LSD, Psychedelics, the ONT and You

Here's a totally groovy anti-drug film from the 70's that tries to be 'with it' with the kids. It's narrated by Tommy Roe who's best known for his 60's hits "Sheila" and "Dizzy". The music and bongo transitions are a nice touch. And is it me or do most of the kids in this film have an odd drawling accent? Maybe it's bad acting, just a regionalism or maybe teenspeak really has changed over the last 40 years.

So don't do drugs kids. Or else you'll up like the people in this video wearing bad fashion, saying goofy things and having to chat with a ginger psychologist with a pornstache.

Stand By For A New Anti-American WikiLeaks Video
While I applaud the idea of WikiLeaks in principle, so far their leaks all seem targeted against the US government and military and the usual bugbears of the left. Which makes them just a another lefty group. Oh and the founder and operator of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, is no saint.

US Military Gets New 'Green' 5.56mm Ammo
It's 'green' because it uses less lead in its manufacture. But it also seems to be a better round in general:

The M855A1 resulted in a number of significant enhancements not found in the current round, officials said. They explained these include improved hard-target capability, more dependable, consistent performance at all distances, improved accuracy, reduced muzzle flash and a higher velocity.
During testing, the M855A1 performed better than current 7.62mm ball ammunition against certain types of targets, blurring the performance differences that previously separated the two rounds.

So apparently NASA bans sex among the astronauts on the International Space Station. Which makes those six months visits feel even longer. Of course on the ground is a different story.
And in more diapernaut news Lisa Nowak was convicted earlier this year in civilian court of burglary and misdemeanor assault charges and sentenced to two days in jail, a year's probation, and has to write letter of apology to her victim. Next she faces military justice and odds are she'll be demoted and allowed to retire with her pension.

Of course in Lego tradition there are funny bits mixed in, much the same as in the Indiana Jones version once Indy retrieves C3PO's head as an artifact.

I thought it was just Spokane that had the phosphate free detergent.  I just checked my Cascade under the sink.  It says it has 5.5% phosphate.  I don't know if that's reduced from the Total or not.  It's called Cascade Advance.  Kind of ironic that a detergent that has the same name as one of most prominent mountain ranges has been emasculated.

63 The lack of phosphates in laundry detergent is why people are starting to get stinky washing machines.

And dirty clothes, although that's also because "water saving" machines don't use enough water to wash away dirt once it's been loosened.

Wisconsin banned effective detergents (I bought the "eco" stuff for the dishwasher once because it was on sale for less than real detergent...didn't work for crap), but they haven't sealed off the US151 bridge between WI and Iowa....

I hate to break it to all of you, but they are predicting by early next year that all dishwashing detergents sold in the US will be mostly phosphate free because something like 20 states have bans on them so it will be cheaper for the manufacturers to conform that way. So, those of you thinking you are lucking out in non stupid states will not be.

Interesting aside, laundry detergent has actually been phosphate free for a long time, I think since the early 90s. I believe the water saving machines is what is causing a lot of the current problems because phosphate free laundry detergent works fine to get clothes clean--I assume because of the different basis for the dirt vs. food particles etc.

87 Ah, my old No. 4 Mk. I was a jungle carbine. Not great to fire, but deadly accurate. My No. 1 Mk. III* was almost as accurate, and really felt a lot better in the hands.

Posted by: Dr. Raykon, DDS at June 29, 2010 09:51 PM (wOtDN)

Couldn't fire the carbine without getting a sore shoulder after about a dozen rounds. Loved the standard version though. Knew a girl who fired the carbine with no problem though. Little embarrassing that!

Have to say that my favourite weapon is my Norinco SKS with a 30-round clip. Hardly any kick and very reliable. I never understood people who talk about full auto weapons. You could empty that thing in seconds.

Let's face reality, liberals are not going to be satisfied until we are using rocks to wash our clothes and line drying them and doing our dishes by hand with eco friendly soap and a water cut-off timer that only allots a certain number of hours a week to the running of water. 100 89 Why have phosphates been banned? What's so evil about them?

Because hippies-liberals-econuts hate things that actually work?

Well, that too, hence we get the reduced water loos that take several flushes to get crap all the way down and waste even more water than the older toilets that only need on flush.

Phosphates are a limiting growth agent in my environments, so people don't want excess phosphates getting into the rivers and streams (and even in the Gulf of Mexico) causing algae blooms that deprive oxygen to higher organisms such as fish.  However, this banning of phosphates in dishwashing detergent is again government over-reach and probably won't affect the amount of extra phosphates getting into the water one bit.  PGiS is right - have the dishwashing machines use more water to get the dishes clean the first time.

Well the Lmg's and GPMG's tend to do a better job of that at most ranges. A rifleman who uses full auto isn't going to have any ammo left after a minute or two of firing. You can go through ten clips pretty fast and there is no way you can carry enough ammo to keep up with it.

Star Blazers started my love affair with anime.  Every day, without fail, at 3:30 on Channel 56.  I had no idea cartoons could express mature themes or a wide array of emotional content.

Rum, well I discovered today that one of my suits is more for sunbathing then for swimming, so I decided to take a suit I can swim in, and then I wanted to take this other suit that is cute with swim shorts for maybe beach wear. I don’t know, I wanted options.

I’m going to have a skirt with me, maybe a summer dress, but it is up to you if you want to go dressy or casual. One of my friends told me today she stayed there when she was 8 months pregnant and there are restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and I figure that if an 8 month pregnant woman can waddle there I probably can too…

Heels, I'm probably not doing this trip because I have fun summer sandals.

176 Outrage in the House:

A minister was involved in an extraordinary public spat yesterday after branding Commons speaker John Bercow a 'stupid, sanctimonious dwarf'.

Mr Burns's comments came after Mr Bercow twice asked him to address the despatch box rather than Government backbenchers.

The Speaker pointed out that other ministers had been similarly warned and had managed to fully 'understand' the instruction.

Apparently enraged by the reprimand, Mr Burns shook his head and mouthed the words 'stupid, sanctimonious dwarf' at the Speaker, who claims to be 5ft 6in.

At the same time, the minister ostentatiously lowered his hand to indicate Mr Bercow's short stature.

177 No, liberals want everyone else to use crappy detergent and dishwashers that don't work. They get to use the good stuff and salve their withered consciences by purchasing "offsets."

And ultimately they want us all to die.  I'm not kidding -- they fantasize constantly about reducing the human population to only a few million.  And needless to say they expect to be in that surviving population.

Except that they won't, because they don't breed.

I'm looking up pricing, the cheapest way to get me and some boxable items there. Other things would be cheaper to replace than ship I can toss, or ask someone to store for me until I can get them. Even if I had gotten the 4th extension, it would only be 6 more weeks and at this rate, I'd still be sucking wind.

192 buzzion is right.  The purpose of full auto on a personal weapon is to control a space, via denial and suppression of enemy fire, thus allowing maneuver, deployment of heavy weapons. and deliberate fire to kill the enemy.  Outside of squad tactics, full auto on a personal weapon is of limited situational utility - trench clearing, ad hoc engagement of fast moving targets, ambush breaking, crowd "control", etc.

On heavier weapons, full auto has a different role where the rate of fire can be sustained and controlled.

I still want a full auto Thompson, just for nostalgia.

I may be wrong, but I believe M855 has always been known as "green" ammo because of the green tip which designated it as a "penetrator" round. That designation was rather a misnomer in that black tipped ammo is tungsten cored and is "supposed" to be an armor piercing round. I don't think the "green" really has anything to do with eco-friendliness.

Posted by: Soap MacTavish at June 29, 2010 06:02 PM (554T5)

238 Many of the problems with the M16/M4 weapon can be addressed by using better ammo and barrels that match mission and condition. No amount of tweaking with the powder, round, and barrel twist is going to fix the armor problem.

Ideally, we need more deliberate fire 7.62 weapons and trained operators for the engagement ranges in AStan,  the RoE favor deliberate fire, and the body armor and "shoot to stop" issues everywhere.

I would like to see a lightweight 7.62 case.

316 Can i ask for some help from you moron/moronettes? I put a cd onto iTunes and for some reason one song keeps showing up by itself instead as part of the cd. I tried burning it to my drive and importing it, but still the same song gets singled out for some reason. I've checked to make sure the artist and album are correct and the track numbers are correct in iTunes. So, any ideas what might be causing this one song to go rogue?

320 I believe in the alternate reality in Stargate Continuum, the Navy was the military branch in control of the Stargate program.  Of course they never got to use it before having it destroyed by Ba'al.

Continuum almost had me creaming my pants, it was so damned cool.  Best SG-1 adventure by far since O'Neill left the series and they started that Ori crap.

Prospects for another movie look pretty grim what with the impending end of MGM.

It is, but after the game's done, it's great to go back and to things such as kill everything being invincible, having unlimited ammo, or whatnot.

Only games I really "cheated" at are RTS PC games (Starcraft, Warcraft) where I would put in codes to give me unlimited resources.

Yes he is liking the game so far. And these aren’t “cheats” as in codes you type in to get the stuff without completing the level, rather it is directions in areas where you are stuck and can’t seem to get out, stuff like “stack the lego bricks on the platform.” Usually within a week there is a game walkthrough on gamefaqs.

I don’t mind him using the walkthrough stuff since it isn’t “cheat codes” because you still have to do the work in the game, but after a while it gets mind numbingly repetitive to run around a room trying to figure out what to do. Especially a problem in the Lego games, most tasks are fairly easy, but sometimes they make no sense, also you don’t lose lives as much in the Lego games so you can be stuck in the same place forever. The worst was in Lego Star Wars when you had to hit a series of Lego bricks in a certain order and keep them lit, but you needed another brick to set down in one specific place to make it all work.

I don’t mind shooting a bunch of shit in video games, what I hate is when you have to shoot exactly the center of a certain target and each time you fail you die and you have to re-start someplace farther back, run through the stuff again, only to shoot the target, die, and get booted back again. Some games have realistically spaced save points, other games are enough to make me want to pull out my hair and scream.

And I hate having to hit obscure button combinations in a certain order so I can fly fast and puff smoke and shoot grenades out my butt all at the same time.

The Percy Jackson books were great, the movie was horrible. Man, you should’ve heard the kids complain about it, I’ve never heard a bunch of 8-14 year olds so disillusioned as after that movie came out. We saw it with about 6 kids, all of them hated it, and then every single kid I talked to at school complained bitterly about how much they changed the story.

There's plenty of them around, if you just google "(game of interest) walkthrough".  If the video game's famous enough, you'll even find some YouTube personality that'll walk you through the game as they played it and give you varying degrees of humorous commentary.

402 The best cheats to use in are (1) the eternal ATM machine & (2) move & delete objects. #1 is great, especially when decorating houses or playing characters created by the game. As for #2, they sometimes have dead Sims pops out of their urns & haunt the houses, which sometimes leads to more character deaths.

Rather strange game, all told.

You would think so, but apparently that was actually done in their 3D movie.  Kind of like NAMBLA.  You think its so outrageous that Matt and Trey needed to make it up but then you find out that it exists in reality.

The scenes with the Jonas Brothers using hoses to shoot foam into the faces of their female fans were inspired by actual scenes in Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. Matt Stone said some viewers found it so unusual they believed the writers made it up themselves

Barefoot bandit is a teenage boy from Camano Island who is infamous for eluding police, robbing houses, stealing planes and boats, and generally being a pain in the ass here in the NW. That's more of the Alan Alda pretty boy thing, or something. It's about eye candy, & a man who does the following on-screen:

525 Empathy & sympathy factor. You get a guy who understands the female psyche, & you can talk to him just like you do your girl_friends. So, he'll give you guy advice whilst pegging your emotions.

I don't buy into it, but I know many girls who do. From my perspective, it occurs more often in those who have bad relationships with their fathers.

Being he was in his first year of Jr. High and still finding his Manhood, I tried giving him several breaks before beating his Man Card outta him.  But with every answer, he just dug himself in deeper.

Were you with a girl and working on gaining points??  No, he was with his Mom.

Did you like it??  Oh, yeah, it was pretty good.  Then he started to tell me all the "Cool" parts, and how he was looking toward the sequel...

I told him, "Dude, you've forgotten the First Rule of Holes".  He's like, "What's that??"  "When you find yourself in a hole... STOP DIGGING.  Not only did you NOT stop digging, you brought in blasting materials and bulldozers and backhoes..."

He let me know that I was just an Old Fart and didn't understand what's cool these days.  I told him OK, we'll check w/ Jake, one of the older cool kids he looks up to, and see what he says...

Next day, Jake gets on and it's almost an exact replay, verbatim, of our first conversation...  He looked at me with the biggest WHATTHEFUCK!?! looks I've ever seen...

It usually takes a little moments between two characters & insinuates there is a bromance OR a female relationship of that nature. For example, NCIS focuses on Gibbs/Tony, & House on House/Wilson. My understanding is that they try to keep from insisting on full-blown romance, so it's all about the little smiles, magic moments, etc.

509 M80=Stubborn by nature is my guess..

To understand how to relieve an earache it helps if you understand what is happening in the tissues when they become inflamed. Inflammation occurs whenever there is some kind of irritation or damage to tissues, which may or may not involve infection. When inflammation sets in, it causes swelling, redness, heat and pain.

Typically, what happens with an earache is that something causes the eustachian tube to become inflamed. The eustachian tube runs from the inner ear into the back of the throat. This allows the airpressure to equalize on both sides of the eardrum. You've probably experienced your ears "popping" when there was a sudden change in air pressure. That "pop" was air traveling through the eustachian tubes to normalize the air pressure. These tubes also allow fluid to drain from the inner ear into the throat.

When the eustachian tube becomes inflamed it swells, just like any other tissue in the body. This swelling causes the eustachian tube to close, which prevents normalization of pressure on both sides of the eardrum. The inner ear, ear canal and eardrum may also become inflamed and swollen, creating more pressure, which intensifies the pain. Just as with any other type of inflammation, the key to rapidly resolving an earache is to get the lymphatic system to drain the excess fluid away from the tissues so the swelling will diminish and the cells will stop sending pain signals to the brain.

This can be achieved by using two simple therapies. First, you can use some type of natural remedy that reduces inflammation and swelling, while promoting lymphatic flow, either as eardrops or as a compress over the ear. Second, you can do lymphatic drainage massage to reduce the swelling. Once you have reduced the swelling and "cooled down" the inflammation, the pain will subside and the irritated tissues will start to heal.

M80..
Here are a couple of the herbal remedies I have found most effective for earaches. You probably have at least one of these remedies in your home right now.

Garlic is very effective for relieving earaches and can be employed in a number of ways. Garlic oil (which is simply garlic infused into olive oil) can be warmed and used in the ear as ear drops. Even better is a combination of garlic with mullein flowers and/or St. John's wort flowers. The garlic oil can also be rubbed around the ear itself and used along the side of the neck for the lymphatic drainage massage.

Garlic contains powerful aromatic compounds that have an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory action. But you knew that. My own experience, and that of many of my friends, suggests that garlic is actually quicker and more powerful at fighting ear infections than pharmaceutical antibiotics. The antiseptic compounds will be absorbed through the skin and the eardrum into the inner ear and surrounding tissues, fighting infection and reducing inflammation at the same time.

Another way to use garlic is to take a clove of fresh garlic and cut a piece to the size that will fit comfortably in the outer ear. Do not put the garlic clove into the ear canal; you only want it to rest on the outer ear (kind of like an old-fashioned hearing aid). The raw garlic may cause a burning sensation, which can be lessened by coating the side that will come in contact with the ear with olive oil. This may not be the most socially acceptable way to fight an ear infection, however this technique is very effective.

One of the remedies I've found that usually relieves earache pain very rapidly is onions. As with the garlic, there are a number of ways the onion can be used. Start by steaming or baking an onion with the skin on until it is soft. Keeping the skin on helps to hold the onion juices inside. Crush some of the cooked onion in a bowl to press out some of the juice of the onion. (If necessary, add a small amount of water to extract some of the juice.) Using an eyedropper, place some of the warm juice in the ear. Usually, this relieves the pain in a matter of minutes.
Win-Win.

An alternative method is to cut the cooked onion in half and place the cut surface against the outside of the ear and hold it there for 5-20 minutes. This has also proven highly effective in easing the pain. Make certain the onion has cooled enough that it is warm, but not hot enough to burn the skin.

I have heard of some who have used raw onion juice, but I find this burns even more than the raw garlic. My suggestion, if you want to use raw onion, would be to dilute the juice with a little olive oil or glycerin before putting any in the ear.

A midwife friend taught me this one. If you don't have onions or garlic handy, then you probably have some cinnamon in your spice cabinet. Sprinkle a little cinnamon into some olive oil (or another vegetable oil if you don't have any olive oil, but olive oil is best). Heat the oil over the stove at a low temperature. My midwife friend simply puts the olive oil and cinnamon in a tablespoon, holds it with a hot pad and heats the spoon over the stove. When the oil is hot, remove it from the stove and let it cool to body temperature. Strain it through a fine cloth and use the oil as ear drops.

A final earache remedy I've found very helpful is colloidal silver. If you can obtain it, a 500 parts per million colloidal silver is best. If not, look for a brand that is at least 100 parts per million. Colloidal silver can be warmed and dropped directly in the ear, but it is even more effective mixed with some essential oils. Lavender, cajeput, tea tree and thyme are all very effective for earaches. Use 1 drop of essential oils per 10-20 drops of colloidal silver. Essential oils can also be diluted in olive oil (when colloidal silver isn't available) for a similar effect. Like the garlic and onions, these mixtures will fight infection and reduce inflammation.

While this isn't a remedy you're likely to have lying around the house, it is a remedy I recommend for your herbal home medicine chest. You can thank my kids and Teh Mrs. for the above

524 579 There may be something that is OTC that you can get.  Maybe ask the pharmacist?  Mine were doctor prescribed to help with cleaning out the ear of the infection.

I'll try that, then. Sounds much better than steroid shots, or some of the other cure-alls.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at June 29, 2010 10:06 PM (Yq+qN)

525 Ear drops won't help if the infucktion is in the inner ear, unless you have a perforation and it can get thru the ear drum.

I'd say an analgesic to take the edge off the discomfort, and working your jaw, chewing motions, fellatio/sucking a Mickey D's milk shake* to work the tissues around and relieve the pressure differential between inner/outer ear.

( *Don't laugh, both have caused/cured ear discomfort in The Ol' Lady... )

528 M80.. lay on your side with the aching ear facing upward. Next put the ear drops (garlic oil, onion juice, colloidal silver, etc.) in the ear. Grasp the lower part of the ear and begin stretching and massaging it. This helps the remedy reach the eardrum and begins the process of lymphatic drainage.

After a few minutes of massaging the ear, begin using a "milking" technique to increase lymphatic drainage in the neck and throat. Place your finger in the indentation just under the ear and behind the jawbone. Gently stroke the neck downward from this point. Gently massage the lymph nodes in the throat area, too. You'll know what they are because you'll feel hardened, lumpy areas in the neck and throat. These movements will dramatically increase the flow of lymph moving away from the ear.

If the first round of this procedure doesn't completely relieve the pain, be patient. Just keep repeating the same process once every hour or so.

541 So.... this is how it happened..

God went to the Arabs and said,
'I have Commandments for you that will make your lives better.'
The Arabs asked, 'What are Commandments?'
And the Lord said, 'They are rules for living.'
'Can you give us an example?'
'Thou shall not kill.'
'Not kill? We're not interested..'

So He went to the Blacks and said, 'I have Commandments.'
The Blacks wanted an example, and the Lord said,
'Honor thy Father and Mother.'
'Father? We don't know who our fathers are.
We're not interested.'

Then He went to the Mexicans and said,
'I have Commandments.'
The Mexicans also wanted an example, and the Lord said 'Thou shall not steal.'
'Not steal? We're not interested.'

Then He went to the French and said, 'I have Commandments.'
The French too wanted an example and the Lord said, 'Thou shall not commit adultery.'
'Sacre blue!!! Not commit adultery? We're not interested.'

Finally, He went to the Jews and said, 'I have Commandments.'
'Commandments?' They said, 'How much are they?'
'They're free.'
'I'll take 10.'

@609: "All the way back to the first video in the post - it puts into practice the joke "if you want to keep kids off durgs just show them how people dressed in the 60s and 70s"

According to Denis Leary, it was the bad clothes of the 60s and 70s that got all the guys laid.  Women would do anything to get them out of the lime green open necked shirt and orange bellbottoms.  But really, how can you hate on a decade where you could get a suit made by DuPont?

Infidel beast! A jihad on you!  I would have gone by my nom de guerre, Hassan bin Working, but given the state of the world economy, that seemed unnecessarily cruel.

Ain't cruel to me...  I drive a public school bus...  so my raghead name would be - I's bin on Summer Vacation...

Be sure to stop by my crib during Ramalamadingdong for lunch...  all the pulled pork sammiches you can eat and free beer...

I can do that NOW!

Regression to little-kid-dom, here I come! (after a drink or 4 I'm guessing.  play doh's nasty)

I don't have the Neil Diamond 8-tracks that the folks used to play, though.

565 I frankly don't see a whole helluva lotta difference between now and the 70s...same bad economy, same fugly clothes, same stupid vampire shit...do any of y'all remember Dark Shadows?

572 During the 2008 campaign I had fun trolling at the San Fran Chronicle site, sfgate. My little contribution to Operation Chaos. I posed as a Hillary supporter who then quit the Democrat Party over the undemocratic selection of Obama. They didn't like me. It was great sport stirring them up.
