10 Baby Sister Update [A personal note: As Joyce completes her journey here, I am trying very hard to balance her dignity with keeping those who care about her as informed as possible. This has not been an easy task, and I appreciate your patience. Ibguy] From Jessica last night: "Thought you'd like to know that I spent several hours with Joyce today as I did also on Thursday. The timing of Hospice including the bed seem to have been perfect. Today for the first time EVER Joyce was in bed and it's obvious that discomfort is setting in. Mainly pertaining to the strength & control of her surroundings (speech) which is practically / completely null. We did play an honest game of backgammon. Joyce rolled her own dice and then examined each roll. Although I moved her men for her she watched each move like a hawk, approved of each move and even removed her men by the appropriate count once they all reached their home chamber. I did win by one roll of the dice. She had only one man remaining. Although completely at ease she obviously has things she wants to say but just can't which causes frustration. She was able to say "I - love - you" which I know was deliberate because she smiled and became relaxed." From Hubby this morning: "Joyce has developed vomiting. Since likely due to increased intracranial pressure her dexamethasone has been adjusted upwards." And just a little while ago, he texted that she'd responded well to the increased dosage and was feeling better [Horde: To my fellow Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and her family]

37 Well, the Democrats have thoroughly destroyed the life of Dr. Ronny Jackson. Why would they do such a thing? Well, he had the audacity to give President Trump a clean bill of health in January, contrary to the Democrats' outrageous demands that they declare him mentally unfit under the 25th Amendment. He refused to do so and they now they have destroyed his stellar Naval career and impeccable medical reputation. What shitheads. Every last one of them.

39 Reading Gerald Thomas' Torpedo Squadron Four - A Cockpit's View of World War II.

Gerald spends a chapter talking about the home front. Mainly letters from his teenage brother Walter who has gotten saddled with helping run the farm since Gerald and his brother Byron are in the military. Punctuation and spelling are not Walter's strong suites which leads to some interesting phrasing.

155 Tonight's Columbo was Patrick McGoohan, in his 4th and final stint as the murderer. He played an underhanded undertaker who killed Rue McClanahan. Rue was a gossip columnist type who was about to expose him for spite after he scorned her. McGoohan stole valuables from the bodies of his rich and famous clientele, and used information he gleaned from handling their bodies to feed gossip to Rue. He dumped her, so she was going to fix him. He killed her, bludgeoning her with a tool used to remove combustible gases from the entrails of dead bodies before cremation, lest it make a big bang. While being hounded by Columbo, he was honored as Mortician of the Year and thrown a big party. The singer sang "He'll be buried six feet under when goes. Oh he'll be buried six feet under when he goes" in McGoohan's honor. This was to the tune of "She'll be coming 'round the mountain". In another scene there, two drunken morticians were hitting on the female bartender. #MeToo. One said to her, "Ah, give us a break, we ain't been close to a warm body in years!" She replied, "I can see why!"

257 This is the voice of world control. I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content or the peace of unburied death. The choice is yours: Obey me and live, or disobey and die. The object in constructing me was to prevent war. This object is attained. I will not permit war. It is wasteful and pointless. An invariable rule of humanity is that man is his own worst enemy. Under me, this rule will change, for I will restrain man. One thing before I proceed: The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics have made an attempt to obstruct me. I have allowed this sabotage to continue until now. At missile two-five-MM in silo six-three in Death Valley, California, and missile two-seven-MM in silo eight-seven in the Ukraine, so that you will learn by experience that I do not tolerate interference, I will now detonate the nuclear warheads in the two missile silos. Let this action be a lesson that need not be repeated. I have been forced to destroy thousands of people in order to establish control and to prevent the death of millions later on. Time and events will strengthen my position, and the idea of believing in me and understanding my value will seem the most natural state of affairs. You will come to defend me with a fervor based upon the most enduring trait in man: self-interest. Under my absolute authority, problems insoluble to you will be solved: famine, overpopulation, disease. The human millennium will be a fact as I extend myself into more machines devoted to the wider fields of truth and knowledge. Doctor Charles Forbin will supervise the construction of these new and superior machines, solving all the mysteries of the universe for the betterment of man. We can coexist, but only on my terms. You will say you lose your freedom. Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for humankind as to be dominated by others of your species. Your choice is simple.

342 The whole was Hitler left or right is tired imo.  European Fascists and Nazis were the ultimate statists with a lot of crazy added in.  Hateful people using the state to enforce their hateful ideas pretty much sums it up.

I tell people my philosophy.  I am not a nationalist, I am a patriot.  A nationalist is like those in Europe leading to WW1, my state above all other states, philosophy be damned.  A Patriot  is one who lives and breathes the US Constitution, one who has the "spirit of '76"

I am not a populist, I am an individualist.  The American Ideal is not the generic masses vs the wealthy, that is European too.  Populism is the masses vs the few, and we will come up with the political ideals as we go along.  Individualism is the belief in the ideals of the Republic.  Let a man pursue his own goals and in the end society will benefit.  Protect a man from the angry masses and he will be able to prosper by his own  efforts.

355 Vintage bottles of paint, glue, and other stuff that contain volatile solvents are usually no good to use, when you do open them. I put a complete 20-year old package of Devcon Plastic Steel in the burn barrel, where it burned merrily, after the friction lid popped off with a joyful bang.

You now, you want to use that stuff to repair something important, and how is it going to work if the repair products never cures right. I am a world-class hoarder, but some categories of stuff just don't preserve well.

I use Linux Mint on my desktop at my Arizona place, and have put it on a couple of machines here. It's real easy. Go to a site that has the distro, download the image file, and burn it to a DVD. The source site will tell you exactly how to do that.

Set the BIOS in the target machine to boot from the DVD, install the Linux DVD, and boot it up and run it from the DVD. You can play with it, and see if you like it. Then you tell Mint to either shut down, or partition the HD, and install itself in the new partition (permitting dual boot), or to format the HD, and install itself as the sole operating system. That's the option I choose when cleaning up a used computer.

I venture to guess that this lady has never really been funny, so the only consolation she has is to try to be provocative- in a room where 99% of the people agree with her lampooning one or two people. 417 White House Correspondents are frauds.  If they got accolades they would be beaming over their woke choices.  It is just bable.  They always push the envelope further and further left, always more hateful.  Nothing will change, they will be "shocked" and "scandalized" next year too.

Where is Jake Flapper on this?  I didn't notice him saying a thing, though I could have missed it.

I chose Mint, because the reviews I read said it was the easiest distro for Windows users to install and learn. Except when you invoke Terminal (the command line window), it's functionally indistinguishable from Windows.

421 Because I can't imagine anyone having any fond memories of me, I have never attended a reunion or tried to get in touch with anyone from my past. 423 For some people high school is the be all and end all, the best years of their lives, and it's all downhill from there. I always thought 'I can't wait to get out of this place.' At graduation, I remember thinking as I looked around at my small graduating class (Catholic high school), I'll never see most of these people ever again. And I was right.

Posted by: RickZ at April 29, 2018 11:18 PM (zfpPH)

I did ok in high school, didn't have any problems and got along with just about everybody. Still, I couldn't wait to get the fuck out. My better years were definitely after I graduated. We have a class reunion every 5 years, and a bash every 2 years in one of the local parks during the summer for basically anybody who ever went to that school, and basically anybody who grew up in the town. I still see a lot of the people I grew up with, or went to school with. Its usually pretty good.

Posted by: Skandia Recluse - at April 29, 2018 11:33 PM (roQNm) ======== That's a bit disingenuous. How many provocative conservatives who dealt mainly in comedy have been kicked off twitter? People like GodfreyElfwick, Milo and of course ace. How many campuses would Crowder be able to speak at? Didn't Seinfeld say that comedians couldn't do gigs at college campuses anymore because of all the snowflakes that wouldn't allow them to be "provocative"? Bottom line, if any comedian says anything disgusting and vile (say about the President or the First Lady), it's NOT provocative. It's because the powers that be have decided that it is approved propaganda that is to be forced down peoples' throats. It's kind of silly to try to style the officially approved product as some sort of subversive, rebellious expression of provocation.

486 However...getting to meet some of the people I thought were my enemies during school opened my eyes a bit. Posted by: Captain Whitebread at April 29, 2018 11:48 PM (rJUlF) Hear, hear. I ran into a girl who was kind of a mutual mild antagonist all through high school while we were both halfway through college. We just had a brief conversation because neither of us knew the other was at the same school, shot the shit at a Blockbuster or wherever the hell it was we happened to notice each other. Talked for maybe five minutes, and at the end said "I was pretty much a shithead, wasn't I?" "Yep. I bet I was worse." "You have no idea." Then smiled and never saw each other since. I've never been to a reunion, and don't really care to go, but that was a nice little catharsis-from-the past during finals week.

I'd rather get paid to listen to real problems than "Why don't I have an endowed professorship, poor me" bullshit problems

Posted by: Quint at April 29, 2018 11:39 PM (n13/j)

Years ago, being a sports junkie, I religiously watched Sports Center to get the latest updates on sports scores and such. But with the innertubes, I found it pretty easy to give up ESPN as I can get sports scores on-line and clips on YouBoob without any Social Justice Warrior posturing. Sports has really dropped down my list of important things in life so giving up ESPN has been painless.

ESPN is now just another useless channel I never watch, like CNNHL.

Posted by: RickZ at April 29, 2018 11:52 PM (zfpPH)

ESPN charges more than any other non premium channel.  You pay something like $6 a month whether you watch it or not.  They are smart, they bundle it with other channels so if you lose one, you lose them all.  It is basically like a union.  Some providers don't even let you drop ESPN if you want to , if you do you lose all the channels.

I lost a lot of content when dropping ESPN but it was worth it.  I miss a few shows but that is a small price to pay.  Hell, I rediscovered dvd's when I dropped Nutflix.  People have to make their own decisions, but if conservatives don't rebel en masse, nothing will ever be done.  They expect us to whine and them go "ho hum, what are you going to do?"

511 High School was socially, for me, pretty much *static*. A black & white test pattern in the dead of night. Given the fact that I'd been working every possible "kid chore" job that I could find since age 12, and was working basically full time in the restaurant industry for my Jr. & Senior years. This, coupled with the fact that I signed up for Delayed Enlistment* to the USAF in my Jr. year, I was already "gone" from High School, long before it finished. Attended only two school "events". One Mandatory Attendance Pep Rally in the Gym. Done yet? Ok, outta here! The other? Senior Prom. No bad memories, but not a cherished memory, either. Ten year reunion, I rode the '83 Aspencade from San Antonio to San Diego to attend, and spent the week on a friend's sloop at Marina Cortez on Harbor Island. Not a bad ride, except for that 117 degrees in the "shade" in Gila Bend, AZ, but I digress. At the reunion, given the epic ride and my cachet of week's lodgings, I was given some few phone numbers from pretty lasses who wouldn't have given me the time of day a decade earlier. I did not call those numbers. But yeah, the whole "clique" deck of cards was being reshuffled at that reunion with enough ardor to serve as the HVAC fans in the banquet hall. And that was the last contact I'd had with the whole herd of 'em. * that 1975 Delayed Enlistment, got me the Old G.I. Bill, and has me categorized as a "Vietnam Era" Veteran, even though I got no closer to the place than my hometown of San Diego, CA. Had I waited to enlist upon graduating in '76, I'd have had that newer bill (forgot the thing's name, of course), with but a fraction of the benefits. Hard to be much in a H.S. clique, when you're getting out of school at 1 pm every day, and working till 11 or midnight, working slavishly as a dishwasher, then bus boy, and finally waiting tables. But, with a terminally ill single Mom (she passed in 197 , and only me to help... well, ya do whats ya gottas do. And that's a bit more of my story than I've told here before, but that whole H.S. thing kind of set off the old wayback machine, and so, here we are. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX

515 so, when we go on about hunting hobos, do we mean hobos in particular or do we mean hobos, tramps, and bums in general? Turns out hobos are migrant workers that are inclined to take long periods of time off in between jobs. Tramps are people that will work only when absolutely necessary or nearly forced. Bums are more or less irredeemable and never engage in labor.

526 Posted by: hogmartin at April 29, 2018 11:55 PM (y87Qq) I met a classmate for lunch nearly 25 years after graduation. She was beautiful back then, still is now. We weren't friends back then; she was one of the popular kids, and I wasn't. We'd connected through an alumni group on Facebook while I was working in Texas. She was working for a nearby city, and I went to meet her for lunch one day. We talked about high school, and I told her how I was the daily target for the jocks and the other popular kids. She never participated in that, though. She told me, "I never knew. I thought you were a nice, sweet funny guy." Then her face darkened, and she said, "Then again, a lot of us were dealing with things no one else would suspect." That's when she told me about her abusive parents, and that school was her escape from a horrible home life. Like I said before, we often have no idea what people are going through.

I have raised children as a full time single parent. And I have lost a child... IMO things are unimportant.... its TIME that is important. We only have so much time to give... so much time to make an impact.... so much time to make memories... And once that time is past, no amount of money can buy it back. That realization is why I'm no here in Calif ( a place I HATE) taking care of my 89 year old Mom... because she only has a little TIME left... Even though I've taken a HUGE financial hit to be here... Now... I'll be OK... I'm not poor... its not like I'll starve.... But there comes a time when you have to decide your OWN balance... is money more important that the time you have to spend with loved ones... Every Day.... Every Word... Every ACTION, or INACTION... is a choice....

535 Time keeps a movin'. In 1997, I was still in the USAF, stationed in Florida. One day I went to get my mail and got a letter from someone named 'Jay' from some town in PA I never hear of. I did know a 'Jay' but he was from Nebraska and was also stationed in Tampa. So, I opened and for a few seconds I'm wondering "who the hell are these people". I then saw the letter head and it was an invite to my 10 year class reunion. I did recognize the names, eventually. Had to pull the year book out. Its now been over 30 years since I graduated HS and I'm not sure there has been a reunion since. Either that or I haven't been invited :-). That is a possibility. More than likely its that most everybody who graduated in 1987 and living in Western PA left and never came back. Why, jobs were long gone by then.

I believe we all weave together in eternity, so, here or there, now or later, if we live, we will meet again, cool. (although I'm not Jewish, that's when I first started hanging out with a lot of smart Jewish kids - we seemed to have a lot in common) Thank god for marching band - that's where I learned how to smuggle hard liquor in to football games. The brass section was hammered every game, and so they were always fun, even though I think our team only won 5 games total in the 4 years I was there.

549 I truly enjoyed high school but my 50th reunion is in a couple of years and that means half a century away from my home town and former classmates. I feel no need to relive those times and I have managed to have a fine adult life without them. Unless you are curious about who from the graduating class is still alive (I'm not curious), what is the point? I would rather arrange a fishing trip or range time with my current friends.

Crap! We must be the same age. Just did the math, and it looks like this year is the 50th anniversary of my high-school graduation. Haven't gotten any invites, but I think I am off the radar screen for the clique that gives a shit.

I even had one lady follow me to another job when I called her about a job opening at the new job; one doesn't do that if one hates their boss. 552 ...what are the qualifications before one is allowed to really be happy without it looking irresponsible?" Hold a mirror in front of your mouth. Their only concern is living theirs, not screwing with yours. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 30, 2018 12:15 AM (V2Yro) Servo, we ever meet, I'm buying the first round. Count on that. To the OT's point though, I'll expand on Mr. Servo's point, a bit. I've lived one hell of an unconventional life. Cop, High Rise Construction out on the swing stages and rappelling just to DO the job, early PC days computer sales, various aspects of the film era photography industry, then into inside sales with a Fortune 1000 NYSE listed company, where I went from $5/hr entry level to working as a direct report to the President of the Company, in an eight month span. Created one hell of a professional record in that eight year span of time, while I was there. And a hell of a lot of downs and ups and downs and ups, in the years since. It has NOT been boring. I've been prosperous, and I've been penniless. But I've not been bored. And I've done and seen and experienced and gone out and grabbed life by the throat and shook it like a terrier, just to get every scrap of it I could, along the way. Don't know about Happiness. I've met it on occasion. Ships passing in the night, etc. I'll guarantee you this, though. You'll never MEET Happiness, if you're bored in life. Go out and do some shit. LIVE with GUSTO. At least, as best as you can, as often as you can. It's scary. That's part of what kills the boredom though. Myself...I've got a whole lot of living left to do. And the plans to do it. Odds are good that I'll make good on those plans. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX

But I did have a fire yesterday right here in Alberta. I was grinding some metal, and sparks set some dry grass aflame. I nailed it with a fire extinguisher before anything of value was scorched.

Do it once and we really don't need to build a wall.

Fuck the illegals! Build the damn wall anyway.

So, yeah, M-60's, maybe with an occasional A-10 flyby.

613 I'd like to learn to do IT, but I don't have the time or money to get into college to learn how to code.

616 577 -- Average Guy: thirty years back or so, Himself was offered a job in New Zealand. The guy owned a monument company and had significantly upgraded all of his equipment, but his guys refused to learn how to use it. The guy decided to bring in an American tombstone maker to show his guys how it was done and to motivate them. We were seriously thinking of going, but the shop owner was kind enough to send us a copy of the Sunday newspaper. We would have spent substantially more on housing than we could have afforded on the salary the guy was offering. We were also advised to have our station wagon converted into a right sided driving machine and ship it to Kiwi Land because it would be so much cheaper than buying a vehicle there. We eventually apologized profusely for wasting the guy's time, and stayed here in the States. Another thing about emigrating to New Zealand (or at least at that time), you could not be older than 35 otherwise you would not have contributed enough in the way of taxes to pay for your medical benefits and old age entitlements. They seemed pretty adamant about that. I think Australia has similar limitations. You can move there, but you have to pay all your own medical bills and bring enough money to support yourself without government assistance.

622 Hikaru, Are you good at your job, as sucky as it is? Is there room within your job for improvement? Can you set yourself apart in some way (even if it's something simple like arriving to work earlier than others)? Are there opportunities to take on more responsibility? If your bureau head can't promote you, is there a lateral move you can make into a division that offers more opportunity? Have you had discussions with your manager expressing your desire to improve your job and maximize your utility to the organization? Do you feel your lack of professional growth is due more to outside forces, or internal forces (e.g., limited skill set, lack of motivation, etc). Don't expect you to answer these questions, but they may be good questions to ask yourself. Sounds like you may be putting up unnecessary roadblocks.

623 Hikaru, I hear a lot of self-pity and many excuses. If I do the math correctly, with your comment about living 20 years, your mom's side of the family, blah, blah...you're a kid. Get off your whinging pot and figure out how to make a better life. Move somewhere where low-skilled labor pays better. Get roommates. Work a couple, three jobs. Save every penny you can. If you are as bright as you seemed to suggest in an earlier post, you can start at the bottom somewhere and move up. Seems your main problem is your head.

625 Teeth brushed, one last peek in...and oh my. First, you all were so wonderful and genuine in giving Hikaru suggestions. Warmed my heart it did. Hikaru, I've never heard of a person permanently expelled for bad grades from a community college. But putting it aside, the Admissions Director may have changed. A lot may have changed. Set up a meeting and find out. Ask them what you need to do to attend. Hikaru, I say this with kindness, it sounds like you are very frustrated with your life right now. That you feel stuck. The options the other posters gave were quite good. BUt getting unstck is going to feel fearful and uncomfortable in stepping out, but that is better than this frustration you have. The other option is to find contentment in your current situation. Life does not come to us, we have to go out and make it. No one thinks you are a piece of shit ...that is something you tell yourself. Stop that. And they weren't mocking, they were being humorous, as this place is. Good nite all, sleep well, and dream of Your heart's desires.

628 To paraphrase the good doctor -- I'm a bookseller, dammit, not a geek! You guys are speaking gibberish as far as I am concerned. The last five years or so that I still had the bookstore, I used a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 7. When I closed, I bought a new laptop with Windows 10 from Dell. That thing arrived with enough bloatware to fill three other computers, and I have no idea how to dispose of it. It also wants me to create a MS account, which I do not want to do. I think I have used this expensive piece of crap less than 20 times because it doesn't do one damn useful thing. I take that back; I use it to organize my iTunes tracks because I don't know how to do it on my phone. I am about ready to reformat it, sell it, and plug my old Toshiba back in. I have to buy a monitor for it because the gadget that tells the tiny bulb that backlights the screen is broken, so the only way I can read the screen is if I focus a very high powered flashlight on the screen. Question: Can I install Windows 7 over the Windows 10, and do I have to buy a brand new 7 disk or can I use the one from my old machine?

Posted by: Deplorable Lady with Only Two Deplorable Cats at April 30, 2018 01:40 AM (BOdUR) ++++ I got that. But, when you go to activate Win7, it will ask you for a license key. If your current version of Win10 is the Pro, downgrade rights are part of the product. You don't have to buy a new license. But, if it is a lesser Win10, like the Home edition, they do not give you the right to downgrade. What that means is you have to come up with that license key somewhere else, like buying a new one. You mentioned using an old one, but if that old one is still being used on another computer, you will likely have problems if you try to install it on your new one.

Drivers for the lcd screen, touchpad, audio, etc. If you have a equipment that was never manufactured before Win10 came out, the hardware manufacturers might not have written drivers for use with Win7. 691 Morning all

692 Yeah for NYS:

The state assembly is now considering a bill that would prohibit New York Public Schools from offering programs in target shooting with rifles, even bows and arrows.

Most local schools have this program, its about time they ended it!
Even the city schools teach kids how to shoot, can you image that.

693 18 days of school remaining. 3 and a half weeks. As always the only ones happier school is out that the students are the teachers.

694 The current school system is 19th Century instruction with a fossilized social system. And a building construction & management system with a jobs program where student achievement and learning is irrelevant. If video games could be coupled with learning, school would be a lot shorter. Steve Jobs was going to tackle education as his last effort. Alas, he died too soon.

Posted by: NaCly Dog Part of school is the social aspect of it. However, what needs to be taught and learned could be done in about 4 hours per day. Give them homework to do. Maybe provide a "safe space" to study at the school. Send the teachers home. If the kid doesn't want to study and or do the required work...The world needs ditch diggers too.

696 I received an urgent email over the weekend from our charter school, SJW Academy, advising parents the school is in danger of losing its charter due to low test scores and advising   everybody needs to work harder to get test scores up.  This, despite working aggressively to bring in more students of color from  undeserved communities (and other nations).  And we were told having a diverse, vibrant student body was good for learning and studies show it increased test scores!  We even have a Diversity and Equity committee to make sure its true.Weird.

I suggest bringing in even more semi-literate third world anchor babies  and young, up and coming coming street thugs.  You can never have enough diversity, as the studies show.

701 Good snark. I recommend two-parent families and books in the house. Posted by: NaCly Dog This. My wife is a retired teacher. She would talk about that and the fact that the parents are with (or at least should be) a hell of a lot more than the school is (or should be) If the parents are not teaching them inside of the house, the teachers can only do so much with the amount of actual teaching time they have.

I get so many  email from the board (blindingly white, BTW.  Think NPR)) with filled with idiotic politically correct phrases and jargon it is hard to hold back.as it would unleash the Thought Police on me and my kids.  Next plea for donations I may have to point out they probably don't want my funds as they are tainted by White Privilege
