Stephen Chu Confesses: No, It's Not A Goal of Mine To Get Gas Prices Down
— Ace

He's previously stated that the ideal price of gas would be $8-$9.

He doesn't back down when queried by Congressmen.

“But is the overall goal to get our price” of gasoline down, asked Nunnelee.

“No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, to build and strengthen our economy,” Chu replied. “We think that if you consider all these energy policies, including energy efficiency, we think that we can go a long way to becoming less dependent on oil and [diversifying] our supply and we’ll help the American economy and the American consumers.”

Democrats' response is, as ever, to put a quick political band-aid on the problem: As usual, they want to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Ah, this old chestnut.  I say don't stop them, don't even argue and don't let them get away with holding it as a sword of Damocles.  Tapping the SPR isn't enough to change prices.

Posted by: Jimmah at February 29, 2012 10:05 AM (845uI)

5 And that's the whole problem with the Energy Dept. They need to read the declaration of their mission as it was created. They are, and have been, in direct violation of it for a long time. As there is no constitutional provision that designates the Fed to be responsible for Energy, this whole dept needs to be cut. Remember, this Dept did not exist prior to the Carter Administration. No surprise there huh?

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." W.H. Murray (a mountaineer, mostly). We could learn a lot from Mr. Chu's frank and forthright boldness. His idea of why and how to proceed may be debatable, but I find it very refreshing really to find a guy giving testimony who isn't lying or beating around the bush in his answers. The mistake that the pukes on the sidelines are making, I mean his Demo/Socialist masters, is that they are not backing him to the hilt ... but they are eaters of poo, who see boldness only as a thing to fear, so what else should we expect.

97 Drill, drill, drill is a stupid idea advanced by uneducated rubes that think supply is somehow linked to price. Tapping the SPR, on the other hand, is a good solution to the rising price of oil because of something completely different and way more sophisticated.

Cause, ya know, they aren't going to be able to run out and buy a Chevy Volt. Oh, well, maybe they can give them free gas. Oh, and people who buy used cars are already paying the price for "Cash for Clunkers", in the higher prices for the used cars that weren't crushed.Talk to anyone who has bought a used car recently, they've gone up by thousands of dollars.

I'm not sure whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing.

If people were actually paying attention last year (they weren't) they'd correctly lay such a problem at the feet of the President.  If they weren't (they weren't), it may be the first time in modern history that the news networks made sure people understood that the House is (traditionally) in charge of spending.

They make decisions about which news items to focus on, and those decisions are motivated by getting leftwing people elected.

134 This is a little off topic but suggested by one of the videos.

Some years ago a black teenager was driving from LA to Chicago and ran out of gas outside of town.  My town is more lily white than the MSNBC lineup.  So, stranded on the side of the road, the kid decided that the only reasonable thing to do was to snort a line.   He was just getting all set up when there was a rap at the window.  He freaked and the coke went all over.  It was a trooper making a welfare check.

So he got charged and here he is incarcerated in Wonderbread land not knowing a soul.  He got some kind of a deal worked out and he was trying to enter a plea and be sentenced before one of our more eccentric judges who plays a harmonica and considers himself to be something of an an authority on music.  The prosecutor, a real mean young woman with a wicked sense of humor (and my friend) gave the factual basis consisting of his unscheduled stop outside our fair city and the attendant circumstances of his arrest.  Having heard the story, the judge, given to unorthodox questioning, asked the defendant if he knew what song his situation reminded the judge of.  The kid got a look of pure terror on his face and I could just see the wheels spinning, "This cracker judge is going to sentence me to cracker prison because I don't know some cracker song!"  His public defender, seeing the panic on the kids face, leaned over to him and whispered, "It's Running On Empty."  The kid leaped to his feet and shouted, 'It's Running On Empty, your honor!"  At this point the prosecutor leaped to her feet and said,  "I object!  His attorney told him!"

The kid about had a heart attack but then everybody started laughing and they proceeded with the sentencing.
